The thing is, all of these views are technically correct. Scorcese expertly executed this story to let the viewer decide what their takeaway is.

Dude, I would’ve loved to work for this guy. The fact that you didn’t even need to come up with your own sales pitch was pretty cool. He just wrote down everything for you to say and all you had to do is practice it. And I’m an actor on the side so I would’ve been able to work it perfectly.
The majority of all sales jobs, especially telemarketing, get employees to memorise a script. Some places even punish you for going off script even if it makes sense. You might dig telemarketing if this appeals to you, some good friends made over 100k a year when including commissions and got offered a lot of opportunities for better paying jobs in the same industry. You just gotta be fairly ruthless and willing to hit people with the upsell and be ok with selling to people who clearly misunderstand what's going on, including old people. Most of the time they were giving people a better deal than they already had though. This was telemarketing phones, prepaid plans and internet packages etc.
