Speaking of Ninet Tayeb, when Steven was on tour for Hand. Cannot. Erase., he lost his voice to the point when he needed Ninet to come up and sing for the entire concert. The thing is, the only song she only knew Routine, but the band was playing the entire album. So what happened? The theatre crew brought in a music book stand with the lyrics and the notes, and she killed it. She didn't recite the songs either. One of the craziest concerts I've been to.
I was front row at the Beacon with my nephew. When I learned that Steven was unable to sing, I was initially bummed. At the end of the show, I realized that I had just witnessed something extraordinarily special and unique. It’s a memory that I treasure.
I was at that show too. Given the circumstances, that might be one of the most incredible shows I’ve seen ever. Though his most recent show in NYC (I attended the 2nd night at PlayStation Theater) was pretty incredible too! ;)
A sincere apology for all those who don't recognize your brilliance, Steven Wilson. Fear puts people back to sleep, and your thought provoking music is a standalone awakening which, for those who don't want to see, is unwelcome. But music saves lives, and your music saved mine. For me, you can do no wrong. I appreciate every venture intro the abstract as much as every progression back to the middle. Thank you. I'm grateful you exist, because if you didn't, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't either. I'm a musician too, tho I could never be as good.. You're my hero, Steven Wilson.
I agree totally with you Andi, he is so underappreciated. My daughter likes Steven Wilson but I haven't got my wife to like him yet. I am not giving up. However, my biggest disappointment was going to Nashville and see the what I thought was a small turnout for the "music city". Most of the fans I talked to were from out of state including myself. What is wrong with you Tennesseans??
I fell in love with SW at the first time I heard. It didn't take while to start to research about his projects and start to think about produce music. Good music. Because of him I started to study and hear a lot of other stuff. I started to know music from another perspective. I would like to thank him for all of those things.
The same with me, and I remember how my mind just blows. And even today, when I stop everything to hear, I got those same feelings and others, new feelings, new sensations. It makes me think how to really pass on a track all of this touching thing.
Sorry, It was confusing. I was talking about how he transfer this to music. Those feelings, meanings, philosophy.. not just by lyrics, but with the whole instrumental part too. How he directs it. That is the point.
It's crazy how good of a songwriter he is. I was able to accurately guess what he meant in each song during one listen. Also I clearly remember each song, none felt like filler tracks.
All the critics of the album ...... silenced or maybe your journey on this train is over. Really nice exploration into depths of society, viewed from multiple perspectives.
You know... SW music always had a stunning MUSICAL depth. Music, that is very interesting for musicians, too. Lyrics have least to do with music. And the new album bores me to death. Musically. No lyrics on this planet could be able to rescue boring, uninspired standard 4/4 pop music. I'm not disappointed. I'm ANGRY!!! :-(
No, I'm rock fan and hoped for a rock album with high class intrumental goodness. What we got: radio music. Don't get me wrong! I'm a huge SW fan. But that doesn't mean, that I love everything he comes up with on principle. Like obviously maaaaaaany others do. Stay objective, people! This is what Hand.Cannot.Erase would shit out.
M D well I am a big Steven Wilson fan at the same time I'm a big fan of doing things different and he did try. Most songs did grow on me although as an I Dian the video for permanating is cheesy on every level. But the production on the album is really good. And yes nowhere now is preaching in some aspects but art is meant to observed from certain perspectives you may like or not like it.
HEs SMILING WHEN HE TALK ABOUT PERMANATING END IS NEAR FOLKS!!!! Hahahaha Steven You are such an inspiration for me ...You are one of a kind! Greetings from Mar del Plata
Ahh, it brings a smiling tear to my eye when I see SW work in the studio. Being a studio engineer has brought so much to me and I am eternally grateful to SW for inspiring me to follow my dreams wherever they lead. It has been a long hard road but in my down times I can listen and watch SW's projects and feel ... better. Thanks SW for everything. meeting you in ST Pete Florida all those years ago is still a very fond memory. live long and prosper. also, drink beer. CHEERS!
This album is growing on me with every listen. Methodically written and produced, it demands the listener to give it the time it deserves for the layers to reveal themselves. The joy of finding a new sound you might have missed earlier is sublime! This video is sweet and helps to appreciate the record even more by giving the listener more clarity on the intent behind composing each track.
The near 50 year old Steven Wilson is bringing such profound vision to his lyrics. Most of us feel we "get it" out there but listening to him and his lyrics gave me even more focus on the planet we live on. As this man matures into an old man it will be interesting to hear what he has to say.
I came aboard after hearing Blackest Eyes on Radio Paradise. Since then I've devoured every PT and Steve Wilson album I could find. I'm also a bit of a songwriter and if I could actually adjust my melodies, they would sound a lot like Steve's stuff. Over time, I've found that if I get into the groove of creating music, it becomes obvious that I'm the channel and the music comes from elsewhere. I can only try to direct it, like pointing a flashlight towards a previously dark area. This may or may not be the case with Steve but I can say that I've never in my life found someone who can bring forth so many great musical creations. Art and music are physical expressions of the soul. And he's found a way to channel it all into our minds. I'm with him for the long haul.
Don’t mean to sound morbid but Pariah is made the ‘play at my funeral’ list (along with comfortably numb & the spirit carries on). Wish I could be there to see the reactions 😢
I can't decide which I like better: Song of Unborn or Nowhere Now...but really I love the whole cd!!! So amazing...love Ninet on Pariah too !!! Wondrous expression!!!
Thanks for your music Steven and your intelligent explanation of your carefully crafted songs which will enable me to enjoy them even more. I came in at Deadwing, was blown away to find great satisfying prog rock still thriving (well after my last foray, Moving Pictures) and stayed for the ride. A most fulfilling journey indeed, and one of my lifetimes greatest pleasures for sure.
One thing I'll add is that as far as myself I am so scared of dying from listening to the actual cd, from a heart attack most likely. I think my feelings are so intense that I won't survive before long. Truthfully I am afraid of him, his biting remarks, his incredibly. Amazing music. I could go on...
I just want to say a big THANKS, I highly appreciate you and your music, Steven. I think you've developed a stage where you have the freedom to release the music that´s exactly in the style you want it to be, with many people supporting and trusting in you. And this is an extraordinary achievement in todays music industry.
Obviously this album is poppier and more accessible than his previous offerings, but .... just, wow. It's so personal. It's less creative and more repetitive musically, but those personal touches just blow me away. I quickly fell in love with this album, and if it's not quite his best work, it's definitely very good.
You never seize to amaze Mr.Wilson .. ordered from HDtracks and these albums although a different take still you can here your signature allover the album and your musicians
Ordered mine some time ago! It's on it's way now!! I've been tracking it....cannot.wait. Thank you, Steven, for being born!!!! Seen you in concert 4 times now...looking forward to future ones!!! YOU.ARE.MY.HERO.!!!! KEEP ON KEEP'N ON MY FRIEND!!!! :D
Since the "Raven..." on each album Steven bestows us with a song that has very emotional lyric theme and a very powerful solo, that just makes me so emotional, vulnerable and brings me to tears in a very beautiful and compassive way. 'Drive Home', 'Routine' and now 'Refuge. 'To The Bone' is such a masterpiece and Steven is definitely one of the greatest artists among all of the musicians in the world across various genres. Thank You, sir!
To the Bone is my favourite Steven Wilson solo album to date noting that I love them all and that includes the shorter EPs. Question: Did Wilson meet his wife in the period when he was writing material for To the Bone? Hard to pick a favourite.... Detonation with guest Slovak guitarist David Kollar would be it.
This album is every bit amazing and tears for fears Elemental album. It's has this epic grand sound and great diversity of music and songwriting. If your a music lover, this is a go to album
Do we, really? I think Wilson's solo material is way better than The Incident. And also, Porcupine Tree never came to play live in my country, but I've seen Steven twice now, so. Can't say I really miss PT in any sense.
Deathshuck porcupine tree was amazing in the genere it existed in. Now Steven really works outside the box. Although the incident is one of the most supreme pieces of music created. But yes indeed porcupine tree was getting stale, but a small break is sufficient and he doesn't debunk getting back together. Although in conclusion HCE is his best production so far, I like insurgentes as well.
I don't really as some of the music he released under his name has sounded like Porcupine Tree. It is interesting how this is more poppy than his other albums and he did not release it with Blackflield because that band has released a lot of indie-ish and poppy stuff.
just received my Vinyl edition today... I'm a big fan of Porcupine Tree since 2000, so albums like Lightbulb Sun or Stupid Dream are my favourite....and so far I'm very impressed by Steven's new output.
Some of Steven's comments call to mind Queensryche's Operation:Mindcrime and Pink Floyd's The Wall. And perhaps even Peter Gabriel / Kate Bush (Don't Give Up). I"m surprised no one actually followed through with the Mindcrime plot in real life, like the movie Taxi Driver. THANK YOU Steven for putting the in-the-studio / making-of albums out on youtube. I could watch them all day, chin-in-hands. And thank you for being at the fore of putting out your music on 5.1 Blue-Ray and for being honest in your music. I wish more would follow suit. Floyd's Animals is to come out later this year in 5.1 .
Thank you SW for this video. I have always wanted to compare my interpretations of songs with the composer's and this video offered a great exercise in that regard. Please keep doing this in the future :)
Album is amazing. I have so many repeatable moments on it and I don't think it's should be flagged as "pop" album. Btw. Nice opening lyrics in "people who eateat dakness" ^^
excellent interview, thank you for it! 8-) the new album is growing on me... perhaps even a bit more after hearing this interview. ;-) of all the SW solo albums, i believe "Hand. Cannot. Erase." is my favorite, although i'm not certain i can explain why. then again, i heard a statement in a movie once that i absolutely LOVE which seems appropriate: talking about music is like dancing about architecture. ;-) KEEP ROCKIN' STEVE! 8-)
Steven if you are board, because of social isolation I have two song beginnings that need a treatment, first is Monkey Man- Rolling Stones, second is Sheep-Pink Floyd. What I mean by treatment is where just the opening instrumentals need to be made into separate songs in themselves
Thank You for the explanations to your songs . We as listeners tend to try to interpret what is meant through our perception . Some of your thoughts are a bit funny . Some things just cannot be explained . Wrong is wrong some twisted thoughts are just that there is no justice to terror !

Steven Wilson will go down as one of the greatest musicians of the modern era
Speaking of Ninet Tayeb, when Steven was on tour for Hand. Cannot. Erase., he lost his voice to the point when he needed Ninet to come up and sing for the entire concert. The thing is, the only song she only knew Routine, but the band was playing the entire album. So what happened? The theatre crew brought in a music book stand with the lyrics and the notes, and she killed it. She didn't recite the songs either. One of the craziest concerts I've been to.
that's amazing!
Though his most recent show in NYC (I attended the 2nd night at PlayStation Theater) was pretty incredible too! ;)
Wow!
I never, ever tire of hearing Steven talk about his music.
This man is pure genius plain and simple.
Steven Wilson is a GENIUS!! I will deport whoever disagrees!
Lmao!

Because of him I started to study and hear a lot of other stuff. I started to know music from another perspective.
I would like to thank him for all of those things.
My first introduction was In Absentia back in the 00s. Twelves years later I still love everything about his music and probably always will.
I have had the same experience as far as not only loving SW but also learning of other music I'd never heard before which enriched my life immensely.
The same with me, and I remember how my mind just blows. And even today, when I stop everything to hear, I got those same feelings and others, new feelings, new sensations. It makes me think how to really pass on a track all of this touching thing.
+Renata Salles how do you mean pass on a track, I recognize those lyrics they are from Glass Arm Shattering on Deadwing.
Refuge is the greatest song I've ever heard.
Christopher Blue Have you heard Raven that refused to sing? Tops for me.
Heck yeah man, I love that song, and that album. I listen to it all the time. Is that your favorite song/album?
Yep, that sound, that punch in the face, that tremendous earthquake that invades you, the tears you cannot keep inside...
I just love listening to him. One of the few artists who actually have something to say.
"I'm tired of Facebook" 10/10 AOTY
"Xbox is a god to me" 5/7 Album of the Century
i can totally relate! 8-)
All the critics of the album ...... silenced or maybe your journey on this train is over. Really nice exploration into depths of society, viewed from multiple perspectives.

Very interesting video, I love listening to Steven speaking
A true artist with incredible talent and a visionary on so many levels.
I like this album a lot more than I thought I would.
To the bone is an incredible album

A duo of Eddie and Steven will mark a major event of the human race! A real force of nature 🍭😇
A good song is a good song, no matter what kind of genre...

Is this guy really almost 50 years old? He barely aged a single day!
He’s written so much in his life, his skin hasn’t seen much sun lol
Song of I. WWhhooaa, what a masterpiece. Video, message, lyric, Everything is just to good to be truth!
An absolute triumph!! My favourite track, Song of Unborn

Ok I just listened to him in A Conversation with Steven Wilson and it was so nice to see how happy he is nowadays compared to another time before.
heartbreaking.. in a good way, as he said.
+Renata Salles yes but damn is he hot

The album is fantastic. My favorite is Nowhere Now,but every song is amazing:)
An album of the generation. Thank you Mr. Wilson
Very strong stuff. Steven coming from several different angles, in terms of genres,

So excitied!
I actually started crying when he explained the meaning behind 'Song Of Unborn'.
Steven is Brilliant !! seeing 3 shows from this tour !!
This album is every bit amazing and tears for fears Elemental album. It's has this epic grand sound and great diversity of music and songwriting. If your a music lover, this is a go to album
Can we just enjoy the music?
Brilliant album and great interview.Steve as always very easy to listen to when discussing his music.
It's everything great of course but we do miss Porcupine Tree :(
Do we, really? I think Wilson's solo material is way better than The Incident. And also, Porcupine Tree never came to play live in my country, but I've seen Steven twice now, so. Can't say I really miss PT in any sense.

what about Fear of a blank planet and deadwing? both after In Absentia and probably their favourite albums imo
Vitalii Plagov I like that he doesnt stick to something and allows himself to evolve as a musician.
5:00 How I write my albums in studio :dd
just received my Vinyl edition today... I'm a big fan of Porcupine Tree since 2000, so albums like Lightbulb Sun or Stupid Dream are my favourite....and so far I'm very impressed by Steven's new output.
Thank you Mr. Wilson
To the bone is talk about Steven and his journey to take history through him his music and talented vioce and good spaker
Thank you Steven for another amazing journey!
Amazing video Steve! Your explanations give more depth to the songs than what is evident. Loved the album. :)
great record. nice to hear his thoughts on the different tracks.
another perfect record
LOVE IT
Incredible
O maior artista de todos os tempos!
Gracias por existir
Great álbum!

Great video! It really adds 'life' to the album. Thanks SW!
Thank you SW for this video. I have always wanted to compare my interpretations of songs with the composer's and this video offered a great exercise in that regard. Please keep doing this in the future :)
Seems like I need to watch High Fidelity.
thanks for this nice video. See you in Switzerland
Steven please come back to play in Milwaukee.
Album is amazing. I have so many repeatable moments on it and I don't think it's should be flagged as "pop" album.
Btw. Nice opening lyrics in "people who eateat dakness" ^^
demoon222 😂
😢💕
Detonation is classic Wilson and its very bold. Takes gumption to write a song about terrorists.
I only have one wish, I get to die before Steven.
One the people will do research on steven wilson's work. They will do their P.hd on steven's music. Mindblowing talent
All this time I though the song was called 'Permeating' (as in 'spread into').
excellent interview, thank you for it! 8-)
*To The Bone*
W I N N E R ! ! !
Best centrist dad album 2017
Whilst this is my least favourite SW album, hearing him talk about it makes me like it more. I'll get it on CD soon then.
Vamoooo esteban !
Steven if
you are board, because of social isolation I have two song beginnings that need a treatment, first is Monkey
Man- Rolling Stones, second is Sheep-Pink Floyd. What I mean by treatment is
where just the opening instrumentals need to be made into separate songs in
themselves
Your newest album is the best of 2017 so far.
who bit the moon is far beyond better...
woow
78/5000well it is a fantastic album I really liked the video and the disc
I like how you treat your shirts
Thank You for the explanations to your songs . We as listeners tend to try to interpret what is meant through our perception . Some of your thoughts are a bit funny . Some things just cannot be explained . Wrong is wrong some twisted thoughts are just that there is no justice to terror !
Wow, this guy is great, maybe he should collaborate with Opeth. Crazy thought, right?
And they should call themselves Black Parkwater!
If this time he could save them from that atrocious "trying badly to sound vintage" album production...
Indeed... But I think that's unlikely. Both Steven and Mikael have tried to bring back old school prog rock for many years now. Doubt they would come up with something like Storm Corrosion or Damnation again. However - Mikael + Devin Townsend..... thats another story.
Been there done that with blackwater park and deliverance/damnation
Starman Tumbleweed Drag Ropes - Storm Corrosion
Songs that has a melancholy touch makes me happier than "happy" songs that makes me miserable...
In addition to the descriptions "prolific" "genius" and "progressive" we need to add the adjective "eclectic."

Yes people do make playlists for each other these days LOL
How would Blank Tapes of sounded in the Genesis era, around the Nursery Cyrme era?
The video is blocked in Brazil :/
Led Lemos psé :(

sounds like "people who eat darkness" could be a lyrical sibling to Blackest Eyes by PT
Permanating - channeling his inner Elton John
