    So glad to find your channel. I've been using the crumpled tissue base for watercolor for several years in a very similar manner to yours. I've used spray glue, pva, watercolor ground, and gesso to adhere the tissue usually to canvas panel, but without any coating on top. When the work is finished I use spray varnish to protect. I'm looking forward to trying this on watercolor paper and adding the gesso on top as well. It is such a fun technique that yields so many surprises.
    I'm also a great fan of Daniel Smith watercolors. Have you tried Quinacradone Burnt Scarlet? One of my favorite reds and I love using it with Quinacradone Gold. Looks like it would fit well in your palette. Thanks for sharing your work and technique.

    • @lindabrownartist

      Hi John, you will find the gesso on top is wonderful for strengthening the surface, watercolour loves it, but make sure the gesso is artists quality. Cheaper gesso is quite ‘plasticky’ and resists too much.
      Daniel Smith is my favourite watercolour paint, I’ll definitely look at the Quin burnt scarlet, thanks for the tip😊🙏

      It strengthens the tissue, and the gesso is lovely to work on.

    Hi thanks so much for this - intriguing! As you are effectively painting on the gesso surface can you use cheaper watercolour paper as long as it's thick enough/300? No need to use 100% cotton?

    • @lindabrownartist
      @lindabrownartist  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely use cheaper heavy paper, canvas or canvas board, any strong surface will work :)

  • @kanamichelle7404

    Linda would this work on canvas too? It seems the watercolor paper is covered by the tissue and gesso anyway,, so I wonder if the same process would work on another substrate. It is a beautiful process and I will definitely try it. Thank you for sharing the process.

    Well I thought I was ready to do this but I think I have the wrong gel medium. Mine is Matt and transparent and I have another one that's self-leveling clear gel. I guess I'll just go ahead and try it. But I think you're calling for white.

    • @lindabrownartist
      @lindabrownartist  2 роки тому

      Yes white gesso, put it on quite thickly, it strengthens the tissue paper, gives more texture and evens the surface colour to a nice white all over 😀
      Purchase artists quality gesso for the best results.

    • @suzanplatzer5416
      @suzanplatzer5416 2 роки тому +1

      @@lindabrownartist I went ahead and used clear because that's what I had. It's kind of warped but I don't think it's completely dried. How long does it usually take to dry? Thank you for your help on this. I will pick up some white gesso when I go out next time. I'll just give it a try on this clear.

    • @lindabrownartist
      @lindabrownartist  2 роки тому

      @@suzanplatzer5416 it's important that it dries completely, if it's not completely dry the watercolour will mix with the gesso and you will get pastel colours. Always tape the paper to a board to prevent buckling.

    • @lindabrownartist
      @lindabrownartist  3 роки тому +2

      Yes I’ve actually done that, you need to use a spray acrylic varnish, with possibly 6 coats to protect the work once completed

    Hi Linda,
    Just watched your video about creating the tissue surface with the gesso. I’ve recently discovered watercolour grounds, could this be used as an alternative final painting surface . Many thanks for advice and help. Regards Marion

    • @lindabrownartist
      @lindabrownartist  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Marion,
      Tissue paper easily disintegrates when water is applied, so I use gesso is that it’s thick and has body, it strengthens the tissue paper.
      I haven’t used the watercolour ground myself, why don’t you try it on a small work? Experiment and discover 😃
      I would love to hear your outcome.

    I would love to try out this style. Which other surface can we use instead of 300 lb watercolour paper? In my area it is too expensive at $23.00 CAD per sheet. Also I can only get either Liquitex or Golden white gesso but they sell a few varieties of each and not sure which one is the best to be thick enough to achieve the textures needed. I've never used gesso. Could you advise which gesso I should get in the Liquitex or the Golden please ? Many thanks.

    • @lindabrownartist
      @lindabrownartist  2 роки тому +2

      Hi Claire
      You could use any heavy paper, or canvas 😀
      Either of those gesso brands would work, they are both good artists quality!
      Just an all purpose gesso is required
