These locks are vendor trash. Worn keys don't work well with these locks. And when you have a failed key change attempt you need a special tool to reset the lock. And these locks wear out in a very fun way where they just randomly stop working.

This is not for breaking into someone's house people. It's when you want to change the pin configuration inside the lock. It requires that you have the original key, and a new key. This is useful when you have lost a set of keys and don't want your door broken into with the key that was lost. You can set it to a new set of keys, hopefully a new bunch that you have at least three of. It is a feature of the lock, it does not make it any easier to break into these locks.

Once construction is complete they switch the lock over to the owners key, they yellow one. It's a pretty genius way to ensure contractors don't make copies of your house key to use for nefarious reasons later on.

It’s the Kwikset smart key lock system. Meant for end user easy rekeying of your house. If you mess up the rekey, just return the lock or buy brand new. Unless you want to deal with itty bitty tiny wafers, you can reset the lock. But you’re better off just buying a new $20 lock. As a locksmith I recommend you stay away from smart key anything. Traditional pin tumblers are still the best way to go. These locks are prone to failure.

@@prestonbeaulieu4379 anyone can open practically any door lock, especially residential. Drill it, pick it, bypass it entirely. Hell take a breacher kit or make your own; and breach it.
It’s all about WHO is getting in, a common criminal likely won’t even bother with picking a lock. Drilling it at best, and at worst maybe prying a door open with a crowbar.
Police can breach doors, and so can anyone else. It just stops low effort crimes, and slows or delays a entry to prepared for a fight.

This video is just a practical demonstration. This information isn't a secret. That little tool with instructions on how to do it is included with literally every kwikset or schlage doorknob set. On top of that you need the correct key to do the re-keying. The system is designed securely. If you are breaking up with someone who is vindictive enough to do this, why did you give them your house key in the first place and why didn't you get it back before the breakup? It's kinda on you at that point.

It's very common for landlords to move a lock from one apartment to another when there is a move out, I've always asked the landlord if it's master keyed, and bought new locks myself (no wear and tear, and the kind I want) and personally handed him a key.
I used to be a shift lead in a franchise restaurant with many locations in a metro area, the district manager was always bringing a new safe "topper" from a store where a person who wasn't there anymore thus protecting two stores. I was the one to pick up the bank bags and get the days cash supply, we were cash only BTW. Many things you learn about cash handling, dimes are a pain, get nickels, two forms a dime BTW. I'd also ask customers if they had any pennies they'd like to get rid of. We had parking meters nearby and people always wanted proper change.
