Repotting a 300 Year Old Yamadori Juniper Bonsai | Bonsai-U
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 вер 2024
- In this week's UA-cam pre-release, the Eisei-en team repots a massive, well-established Itoigawa Shimpaku Juniper bonsai into a new, smaller container. These repotting steps are both applicable to older yamadori, as well as younger plant material with relatively established root systems.

I thought Im gonna hate the new pot, but it actually looks more balance with the weight of the foliage leaning to the left and the pot fuller on the right. hope we can see you cleaning that foliage soon.
When the tree was imported I potted it right out of the box,and all trees I pot from photographs to match the angle.i like the new angle too, really it's a unique tree any way. Kim u ra I think this is the tree he turned upside down. Looks good Bjorn pot and all
That pot looks so much better and the combo is way more in balance now! I do think that Mister Kimura carved a bit too much of the base, but I am sure that after thinning out the foliage when styling it will look much more balanced! Thanks for sharing it with us!🙏👍
Cheers,
Hans van Meer.
Geez imagine the pressure of repotting something that has taken 300 years to create....
The tree is older than America…
the United States...@@pastortroy4life
Hi Bjorn! Fantastic repotting! Thank you very much for sharing your very interesting video and for your very important advice. You are a great source of inspiration! Very compliments 👍👍👍👍😉
I love one of Kimura videos when he took a Shimpaku and flipped it upside down. Like you said Bjorn -Magician. You all are. Love it great work
Nice to see you at work again with this amazing juniper😍
I am in love with that pot
this tree
is so so so so beautiful...
Thanks for another super video 🇩🇰🇩🇰🇩🇰
Very sweet Repot Bjorn and Team on this Awesome Juniper bonsai Tree. You nail it on the Pot also . Will the Restyling video becoming out Soon? Thanks for all you have Done for the Bonsai World.
I’ve never heard someone work the word ‘rootage’ into sentence before. Well done.
Just in time for my lunch break!
Beautiful work lads
Magnificent
Amazing that bonzai predates the founding of the US
LOVE IT!!!!
Have you ever had any accidents with trees? Like cutting wrong limbs and too much comes off, or completely snapping the tree in half?
He is the last Samurai.
I like your bonsai
Hi, nice work, are you repoting the trees in waning moon?
Why put it into a smaller pot?
Probably to get finer leaves and slower growth
@@Boywithplants that makes sense. Its already at a great hight.
My guess is because it’s so old that the roots will grow so slowly. The older it is, the slower the entire tree grows
Just curious, what would a Bonsai like that sell for? Awesome video guys, great work
A tree like this would likely be very expensive. Very easily could be 5-figures in USD.
@@APR1Lmusic 30-50k easily. That's being conservative
@@adamharris5003 You'd wait 10-15 years to find a buyer at a price range like that
It's Great.
Wow cool brother
Sangat indah 🤩
Très beau bras
Wow
Don’t know crap about these trees, is it really 300 years old? Didn’t mention anything about the age in the video besides says it’s old and that there was work done on it like 30-40 years ago. I was kinda hoping there would be more talk about the history of this tree.
i expected the root ball to be like 100000 times denser lol
Menuda responsabilidad.....
such a handsome guy growing bonsais!!! i'm in love!
would it not be easier to break the pot?
Break a pot that is several hundred dollars worth just to avoid some work? Or with some even several thousands worth? No way!
How do you determine the age of a bonsai tree?
❤❤❤❤❤
Why repot?
wouldn't an air gun connected to a small compressor make aerating the root bowl easier? on a low pressure setting, of course.
Would also dry out the root ball, so absolutely not recommended!
"5th week here in march"
It looked way better in older pot. And older pot was way more stable due to longer base.
👌🌳⛩🌲👍
Not the screw tho...
All these wires and screws are not natural.
Neither is the computer youre writing that message on.
@@mistrants2745😂😂
Is it just me or he kinda sounds like john krasinski
👍👌👌👌🍎
I bet your killer at scrabble
this guy talks a lot.... but i listened to every word
I call bs.. it looks 200 years old..
割り箸使っている。
What in the world are you guys doing,,,your suppose to brake the pot,an you never cut any of the root system, crack the pot away ,
I’d rather just break the old pot off instead of cutting roots
That was amazing. I'm now ready for re-potting an ancient old tree. Anyone have a tree for me to test on?
🤣
🤣👍🏻
🤣👍🏻💦
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You can tree deez nuts
I am surprised that the rocks that you used weren't rinsed before putting them in the pot. They kicked up so much dust I thought that wouldn't be good for the plant.
I heard about it too, but I saw a video of a japanese bonsai master mentioning that you can grow bonsai in any normal soil and does not necessarily need a "bonsai soil".
How do I find the continuation video of this specific tree?
I think that the square pot and the color were spot on but it really fell short on size for my taste.
I have to admit it looks like its leaning just as much as it was in the old pot.
@Christopher Mathison They do a before and after, and it's barely noticeable
@@aitotem it is hard to notice but I feel like it was probably the best outcome of the given situation
I went back and forth between 23:06 and 23:11 seems the angle is alittle bit better on the "after", but only by like 3 degree.
Just going on a bit above average power of mental guesstimation, there is less than a 5 degree difference in before and after.
I put some tape on my screen. Moved the video around, from various points, the tree barely moved.
The plant was lower (root ball) in the old pot.
The difference I had noticed is the smaller pot gives the illusion that the branches are further from the pot.
Hi Sir Bjorn That's really beautiful tree i hope some day i can visit your nursery and see you in person you really giving me a lot of inspiration thank you for your video's
Using the sidecutters to hammer in the stakes kinda killed it for me... comon... after all this effort? Either be quick and grimy or delicate and perfect. The motive of the video...
Thank you for the video, it is amazing in its entirety.
Definitely a level of delicacy below what I'd expect for such a piece
With the tree being 300 years old and pretty much priceless, why not just break the pot to remove it so that you don't damage the roots?
They were putting it into a smaller pot anyways.
You need research more about Bonsai. Bonsai is the art to keep the trees in a small pot but still look very mature, it like you try to zoom out an ancient big tree. It will have some dead woods, wide canopy compare to the trunk.
But to have all of that in a small pot will requires some cultivation techniques and tricks. Clean up and keep the roots at small size is one in many step, it will make the tree not grow too big.
Crazy how much bonsai costs. Pots probably $400? I have bought that soil Akadama I'm guessing and you used probably $100 but turned out great
You may want to look into lock wire pliers if you are often repotting and wiring into new pots. I use them at work for lock wiring stuff and they make twisting and snipping wire less of a nightmare. Just a thought.
What is happening in Japan now is a lot of old people .... When they die most of them have no children .... So the whole house items will be auctioned ..
Good selection of pot, i like this pot. And waiting the next video of styling. Thank fo sharing
Pot looks far to deep
why did i watch this
Beautiful I'm just speechless on seeing this bonsai....
The guy holding the tree is the unsung hero here.
Why not break the pot instead of cutting it out?
Those things cost serious money I guess
I like the way he mentioned not using the more common metal chopstick. 🤔
so how much does a 300 year old Bonsai cost?? should i say how much is it worth??
Is that a strong surface root that was left? Spectacular tree indeed.
I think it looks awesome with loads of foliage have no idea why you'd want to trim it
To give a new shape and promote growth. It will fill out again.
I would break the pot the tree s worth way more.. but I know nothing
when you need to nail something, everything looks like a hammer 😊
I have not thought about a bonsai trees a second in my life. Yet here I am.
Amazing stuff. Hope to stop by one day and wishing you successful full year without any restrictions.
Wonderful! Look forward to the updates!
How on earth do you find a 300yr old tree in immaculate condition.. longer than my record books for my family name that are attainable
because its not
Japan.
What is happening in Japan now is a lot of old people .... When they die most of them have no children .... So the whole house items will be auctioned ..
That's sad. I would want to make plans for those trees, pick certain people as caretakers. Sometimes kids aren't the best choice for Guardians.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience. 👍👍🇵🇷
There's less contrast now..
Such a beautiful tree. I love the piece of deadwood coming out of the leaves. It reminds me of a heron. The contrast of the deadwood and shadows is spectacular. I hope the owner knows what they have!
omg it does look like a heron!!!
@@genshinF2Play I am glad someone else can see it too!
Always happy to watch your vedio , and give me lots of inspiration from you.

hope to see you style this tree soon! way too much foliage~
where are they collecting these?
I thought the point of repotting was to use a bigger pot overall, i dont know why you're having a hard time trying to fit it
With normal plants yes, but with bonsai you dont want them to get any bigger so a smaller or same size pot is best.
Who planted bonsai over 300 years ago 🤐
We want more of u. Great stuff. Cheers from Ojai California
that surface root on the left is perfect in my opinion 👌
Looks stuning..👍👍👍
Great stuff Bjorn, looking forward to the next Update.
Hey Bjorn. Repotted a bunch of Japanese maple seedlings but a good number of them turned black or brown at the base. I’m guessing they’re not salvageable and should just give up on them?
Awesome video! Do you have any free book recommendations that I could read to get started with something like this?
Why not get a slightly larger pot? The pot looks a bit too small for the tree in terms tree to pot ratio .
because you don't want the tree to size up n get bigger.
KInd of the whole point of bonsai trees
The pot limits growth
Smaller pot == smaller tree
I bow before anyone with your username
I cant find anything on the process of changing the foliage. Do you have a video or links that explain that process?
interesting, there was so much care and time taken to work around to remove the tree from the pot only to aggressively cut and remove the roots later on ?
Great video. I genuinely thought Colin furze was part of it! You look so similar!
Looking forward to the next level.
