From Nigeria to Morocco - In search of a better life in Europe | DW Documentary

- When he was 18 years old, Ike Nnaebue left his home nation Nigeria for Europe. But the dangers forced him to give up in Mauretania. Now, he’s now back on the same migration route. This time, as a filmmaker.
These days, Ike Nnaebue is a famous "Nollywood” director, a prominent representative of Nigerian film. When he tried to emigrate to Europe in 1998, he couldn’t see a future for himself in Nigeria. Like so many young people in Africa, he dreamed of a better life in Europe - financially, at least. Now, camera in hand, he’s taking the same journey from Nigeria via Benin, Burkina Faso, Togo, Mali and Mauretania to Tangier in Morocco. Along the route he meets men and women who’ve turned their backs on their homes and who are intent on trying their luck in Europe - despite all the risks and obstacles.
Back in 1998, Ike Nnaebue gave up on his plans after meeting a stranger who warned him of the dangers. Ike ended his journey there and then - and never got as far as Europe. But returning to Nigeria without any money was out of the question. Ike Nnaebue spent two years in Gambia, where he was able to work on several theater and film productions. At the age of 21, he knew what he wanted to do with his life and went back to his family.
Nowadays, social media and TV reports show just how dangerous migration can be, with cases of enslavement, abuse and other crimes committed against those who undertake a journey of this kind. Stories that are impossible to ignore. That’s why Ike Nnaebue decided to retrace his footsteps and try to understand why so many young Africans are still prepared to risk everything for a better life.

This line was so touching "begging in the streets of Morroco is a better option than being a stylist in Nigeria". African leaders need to really set greed aside and help develop our continent
It's heartbreaking...
😭😭
The leaders aren't aliens from different planet! They're from the people and the people are the ones who could make changes for the better if they want to, not run away or seek NATO forces to bring democracy!
There are skit makers in Nigeria making good money in Nigeria. So many people are use digital skills to make money in Nigeria.its just sad that the person has such a short sight
no contents creator in Africa are making better life than those ones in Nigeria
look, my father just returned from a 6 months stay in Morocco and he told me the number of west africans in Morocco has increased dramaticly from before the pandemic and that Moroccans are starting to be fed up and there are calls to the goverment to start send people back to their home country and better protect the borders. there are not enough jobs for Moroccans themselves let alone to support an influx of west africans. This situation is not sustainable. Expect a crackdown in the next 12 months. I wish everyone the best of luck in their journey to prosperity inshallah.
It's happening all over the world, West Africans invading others countries
We Moroccans understand the situation and we try to help our brothers with the little we have...may Allah make things better for our continent, Amen.
Technology and enlightment, not a fairy called Allah brings nations forward. Get rid off Religion and the living standarts will improve. Just have a look at us infidels... we have free healthcare, pensions, social security and a higher life expectation than any muslim nation.
Amen and Amen. God Bless You brother
Amen,
Mashallah
The worst of human kind are those moroccans in Europe.
This documentary is so touching. When life is good to you, you wouldn't know what others go through😢
Im telling you sis
Life is not an entity, this life is a test. Only Allah can help you
😮😮😮😮 very True ! I was negative am in Europe because am married to a European! Wishing you all the best !
The way I cried at the end of the documentary…seeing those two young women looking at the sea. I really wish the best for them. Africa, Africa…we deserve to stay in our countries to dream and prosper…but when?
Migrating to europe is NOT a solution to these problems. These people need to make their own country better, its totally unsustainable
When? It should be how because this is a collective effort from all of us.
I find we talk too much and allow the name calling bother us who cares if someone calls you black?you are black and it is not your problem if they want to be racist. we are not confident in ourselves so we let these things bother us.
About time we realise that these are all manipulating tactics to keep us perpetually down and act as victims
Nobody outside Africa means well for us so we need to Starr getting on with it.
we need strong backbone
get some great thinkers and decision markers not bad politicians and make serious decisions
For a start our foundation is built on sand
We need to fight for our continent, we've allowed a few people within the continent hijacked our wealth
Well, in Europe we also had dictatorships in several countries but the people in those countries united and brought down the evil regimes so we could have democracy and prosperity. Why don't Nigerians and other Africans do the same, instead of just giving up and migrating ? They have no strength to improve their countries? Apparently not! They think Europe should be their "nanny" and take dare of them like babies.
Africa has an abundance of potential.
More so than anywhere else.
To my African brothers and sisters, please think of a way to prosper in Africa. The dangers, perils, discrimination, abuse, and exploitation that awaits you in Europe or other countries that will hate you for your color and immigration status is a real factor in your journey. Please consider this factor before leaving your land because there is no place like home. Wishing you all the best, may God guide you and protect you.
I am not African, but my family has shares in companies with operations in a few dozen African countries. If Western, Chinese and Russian extraction companies left Africa tomorrow, there would be zero protection for Africa's corrupt politicians and you would see uprising after uprising with smart, benevolent African leaders replacing their puppet predecessors. I am sorry to say, but there is still a boot on the neck of Africa and it is not an African boot.
Absolutely True Afrika is the best continent to be, Europe it's ain't easy for foreigners particularly from Africa 😢😢
This month, +500 migrants per day come in Italy
tbh Canada is the only place friendly to brown and black ppl in my opinion
$hut up abeg, dey talk like mumu
I've made a conscious effort to live and thrive in Nigeria, I started as a Construction worker with ccecc then quit and started doing taxi, from there opened a shop where I sell phones and accessories in retail and after so many years of not getting what I want, I continued doing my taxi interstate to be precise, shuttling people from Southeast and southsouth to Lagos or Abuja on charter or what they call hire, 2022 I opened a luxury rental car company in Lagos online without owing a single luxury car but with the help of Google my business and some associates and companies who own these luxury vehicles like Landcruiser, Prado, Hilux, Coasters, Camrys etc. I only owned three Toyota Sienna but later sold two and retained one, people mostly connect with my company online and I can tell you that I've worked with people like Marvins record, So many high profile Emirs and Obas that I wouldn't want to mention their names but they don't know who they're dealing with as I'm mostly contacted online by their PA's who probably have not met me before, in 2023 Feb, I met some guys on twitter called Obidient tech space who offer online courses like front end, back end and full stack development course for a token and decided to enroll and it has been a bliss since, my phone business started paying off after 6 years courtesy of my wife, I dated her for four years before I married her on March 5th 2022, I also trained her on how to trade since she has never sold anything before, it took her time to learn but today she has mastered the craft, now I have time to do my transportation business and my online course too. I almost gave up but decided to stay put, if we put the effort we used in travelling overseas here in Africa, in few years time, we will succeed. Mind you I have a very little office space for my Lagos office because most of the transaction are done online and people trust and patronize me because Google verified my business page, address, home address etc
Good 👍
I see all these people risking their life as been greedy. They think when they get to Europe they will be picking money on the ground. Some of them had been lied to as to how much they can make in Europe.
Great story we need more success stories like this. Real wealth is organic takes time & dedication & that very same dedication those who travel if shown through the love of their country hard work & commitment success is imminent especially in Africa everything you need is there resources, opportunity, environment, language, family, friends, community, lineage etc all work in the favour of the Black African in Africa. Creating wealth is a process, trial & error, crawl before you start walking & running just like life. If more of our sisters & brothers put Africa in the centre of their vision a conscious effort as in your case like the hairdresser seeing her in action she’s a natural hustler with Africa on her sights this could had made a difference
It's people like you who I respect, not those that flee because they're too lazy to try.
Bro you have said it all let who have ear's listen, am currently in Germany I can confidently say risking your life coming here don't worth it. If you put same effort and resilience is put into proper perspective the sky is your limit.
As bad as some people think Nigeria is…some people are making it big….and as Gud as some people think abroad is some people are still suffering there…this life no balance…make God open way for us all anywhere we are
There are better opportunities abroad, African leaders should be told the truth, there should be no sugar coating, personally I've written proposals to bank severally to fund my startup but to no avail, Nigeria kills dreams
Yes they never say things cost 10 times more in Europe....... And you'll probably work in a farm 10 hours a day illegally.
Yes. Farming Is A Good Investment 👍🏾 Commercial Foods Farming In Nigeria 😮

This story brought me to tears. I think about my grandmother from Cape Verde who was terrified of the ocean. She came to the USA by boat in the 1940s. The ocean tells many stories 😢
Its just sad, the picture of those two ladies, however brave they speak, I can only imagine the anguish in their hearts. The one sister said it, this a journey of no return. The odds are stacked against them, you gotta admire their inner strength. Man how i wish I could transport myself at that moment and just offer them a hug as a fellow African brother. The damn leaders have failed our continent, endowed with so much riches but all privatized by thieves who forget about the common man and woman. Most societies make it a priority to protect women and children, it is really sad to see our sisters in this predicament.
The saddest thing no one talks about is that those of us who make it out are haunted by PTSD. So in a way we never made it out in our minds.
The price is too high either way. Those who don't leave feel we have it better.
But as in the video, the two women can still share with each other.
Here you face it alone. We have material comfort but the mental challenge is not a walk in the park.
If wishes were horses beggars would ride. At some point you just gather your broken pieces and carry on.
All this young military aged men from Africa/ middle east and Asia are economic migrants. They can work and fight in their countries to make things better and not salivate on European sweat welfare money
Let them come to USA to live a better life!!! Welcome❤❤❤
In 1940, You Can Only Go To America By Ship 🚢 In Those Day. Those Ships Are Better That Now That People Are Crossing With INFLATABLE Boats 🚢 To Cross The Borders
This documentary reminds me of a phrase I read today, it reads "talent is equally and globally distributed but opportunity is not". Many Africans and Nigerians particularly have dreams and ambitions to do great things but live in a continent that suffocates these dreams and ambitions. To every young African out there working hard to achieve something great through honest work, kudos to you. Thank you DW Documentary for this.
What this documentary tells me is. They should stop trying to go from country to country an focus on ONE PLACE. Their minds are all over the place. If they focus on one place an build it up. They would have less problems. Yes learning how to make money is a problem. News flash. There is such a thing as TRADE. They keep getting things from the West an trying to sell it. That is a waste of time. They should take what they have right in front of them an sell it to the west.

This struck a chord
The african situation is because of africans
Why does searching for a better life, look like freeloading?
I was magrating from Benincity to sokoto from sokoto to Yemen from Yemen to Agadiz from Agadize to duruku from duruku to Libya desert 🏜️ 8days in desert before getting to gadamis from gadamis to sabar from sabar to tripoli, then I spent 4 years in Libya I could not make it to enter Italy. Due to people that was dying in the sea at that time, so I have to magrit myself to another worst journey to Morocco, my journey to Morocco started from borders Illizi Province,to tamanrasset, from tamanrasset, to maghnia from maghnia to Errachidia in Morocco from Errachidia to final place Nador, let me cut the story short. Total years in all this journey was 5 years before I con finally see Europe? Nor be small suffer , but all glory be to God for being there for me throughout the journey, and for saving my life in the middle of life and death, God stood by me
Wow... I support you and wish you the best, crazy story can't believe you survived this journey.
This film serves as a poignant reminder of the risks and sacrifices these individuals make, urging us to empathize and understand their plight. Ike's commitment to telling these stories is commendable, and his work as a Nollywood director adds even more depth and impact to this important narrative.

❤ As an African, Nigerian, those are my thoughts as well. Colonisation made us Africans, from day one unpatriotic, and blind to the opportunities within. We rather risk our lifes crossing the Mediterranean, than stand up to our leaders.
The end of this documentary almost made me cry, the hope and heartbreak intertwined in those two girl's eyes omg. DW documentaries are always the best. Lovely music, beautiful narration. Bravo.

But they are not coming to stay ,they still have a long way to go so don't worry urself
When you are barefoot, someone wearing straw shoes will seem as rich and fortune.
To fix a country it's a collective pursuit, but pointless if no body can't even ensure their family sleep with full stomach as securing food will be the first priority.
That can be said about many places. For example: moroccans who try to enter The Netherlands/France. These countries are also crying out that they shouldnt come. But for moroccans its better to be poor in Europe than being poor in Morocco. The same can be said about these people
We can't all escape to Europe for a better life, build your own country and if there's no opportunities or it's wartorn then bare patience or try to change it collectively.... dying for a cause is better than living under oppression.
Finally a smart comment! African people abandoning their countries to go to Europe is not the solution. Restrictions against illegal migration are getting stronger and stronger in Europe every day. The solution for the people in African countries is to unite and rise up against dictators and corruption - that is the only solution that is viable for Africa and for the long term, to increase freedom and prosperity.
Exactly. A lot of us do have this mentality of trying to move to other countries and refuse to take accountability for the problems in our nations and develop them. We always conclude that running to other nations is somehow the best thing to do when we should be taking the right necessary approaches to come to a resolution of major problems impacting our quality of life. We refused to hold these incompetent sellout leaders in the government to a standard. Because of this, we have to deal with the consequences of their poor leadership.

Because they either work for them or get a handout from them.
being european and seeing people trying their hard to across it to europe breaks my heart but also makes me feel grateful for where i was born in.
Until you meet them in real life.
Just so sad to see how people perish needlessly for lack of knowledge!
Aside from the terrible hazards enroute, what skills do they have to live off in Europe?
Kudos to Ike Nnaebue for this eye opener! Hope potential migrants watch and learn!
They can pluck tomatoes under Spain's blazing sun
Most immigrants across the world are unskilled laborers. If they were skilled they could have lived a decent life in their homeland
@@walli6388 that does not sound good
They don't come to Europe to work so it doesn't matter
@@walli6388 I was traveling with a tour bus from Germany to Italy - Catolica - a few years ago, and as the bus was passing farmland in north Italy I saw them working in the blazing sun and picking tomatoes, they were also present at the beaches selling souvenirs to the tourists, I spoke to one of the young men, and asked him questions and he told me that it was an organized group, working for somebody and that I was the first person that day that spoke to him ( in french) like a human being,
Beautiful piece here I must say ❤️❤️ from the production to the conversations to the story telling, top notch ❤️ I hope our leaders watch this and see what they are doing to the youth . there is hope for Africa
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Thank you for your kind compliments. We appreciate it
Beautifully filmed and very moving. So many best wishes to Golden Gucci, Laura, Sandra and the two Ivorian women. It takes a lot to be so open and vulnerable about your dreams and aspirations despite the obvious barriers and hurdles.
Disagree: I fell asleep... and had to comeback to it. There is no "lead up" no suspense .. and the topic is worn out. This documentary need more in my opinion; the editing is chop-suey
@@cinnamonstar808 Cool make your own :)

I love this style of documentary film making. Kudos DW tv. Your documentaries are very informative and deeply inspiring albeit being truly sad sometimes 😢
Thanks for watching! We are happy to hear you are enjoying the docu :)
This can be a book 😢. This is by far the best detailed documentary I've ever seen.
This broke my heart, as an American living here in Africa and hearing so many stories of people trying to cross the open seas of a new life. I understand the desire as so many families depend on this opportunity while so many lose their lives. Africa is such a rich and resourceful continent we can have all the dreams and hopes of the west right here but how do we get from here to there? 😢😢😢😢
For starters...America and other countries that have & continue to prosper by dxploitomg Africa and her resources need to pay REPARTIONS along with STOPPING their interference in African Politics
Totally agree, See what is going on in Niger 🇳🇪 now. Obviously the rest of the world can not survive without Africa’s resources.
@@hat880 Instead of building wealth, you wait around for someone to give you what you're owed... yet no one actually owes you anything. Africa needs to GROW UP. It's apparent that surviving in the north is harder. Just look at all the extremely strong northern cultures across the world. Grow up. Being a perpetual victim is unjustified.
The guy who was telling the name of the food you guys where eating was my room mate 21 years ago, his name is call Dandy he lives in Casablanca
Sounds like a real dandy.
Well done Ike and DW.... We lived the journey through your lens.....Thank you

The cinematography is breathtaking. I sometimes struggled to keep up with the narrator as I admired the stunning shots.
Thanks for watching and sharing your positive feedback!
the two ladies at the end of the documentary, the way and manner they sat together by the seaside, brought tears to my eyes.. i really want to know if they were able to mke it to spain.
Yes this was very sad,I too would love to know that they did not even attempt to paddle there,if only I did not live so far on the other side of the world from them & they been able to obtain visa to my Country,I would have open my home to them & helped them to get a job
This documentary gives a really good impression how the people feel, that try to reach europe.
This is such heat wrenching documentary! Its hard to comprehend the pain these people go through to build a better life for themselves and their family.
I'm Moroccan and my heart aches so much for my brothers in Africa.
I wish you all the best, I'll continue to help you, to offer you a smile, the coins I have on me even if it's not much. May God accompany you and guide your steps ❤ 🙏🏼
Excellent documentary, thank you for sharing. May god be with them all throughout their journeys.
Brilliant, emotive, eye-opening. Great job nwannem..👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿
Thank you for telling our story Nna ! Africa will be great again .
I’m so emotional watching this film. I pray the two young ladies in the end had a safe a successful journey. I wonder if you will stay in contact with them? They are in my prayers. Thank you for capturing their journey.
Thank you for your kind words. Yes I stay in contact with Laura and Sandra. Sadly, they are still stuck in Morocco.
@@ikennaebue5031stuck? they could always go back to nigeria whenever they want. us north africans cannot get a visa even to nigeria.

My heart indeed bleeds from its innermost part. If only I could get these ladies' contact. I need to talk them into returning home and reintegrating them back into society with meaningful businesses.

Excellent documentary, one of the best that i have seen in a while.
Brilliant documentary. It evokes so many emotions. Thank you!
Damn! I had no idea this documentary was gonna hit this hard. God bless everyone struggling to make it in this life. Forever grateful!
What does it mean to dream in a continent of abundant resources without dreaming of departing it to make ends meet? A foundational question to those who pretend to lead the continent!!!😢
I hope the lady stuck in Mali
Could try the Gambia, hopefully without language barrier she could start her journey. Gambians are peaceful to travelers
Ike, you are doing so well. From BBC African eye to DW, you are definitely good with this. A traveller with stories of some nigerians.
Thank you for such a powerful documentary. I have cried and been moved by all these wonderful Africans. How can we make our dear Africa better for Africans? Cry my beloved Africa💔❤️🩹
Thanks for watching and for the feedback!
Anyone taking this route you are on your own. You will show up in Europe undocumented and will get very little preference. We must educate our population on this.
The main issue is that they burden other developing countries like Morocco and bring all of their issues with them. They refuse to assimilate and make their new home just as bad as the last.
How can they assimilate?
@@grmbyn1 By going home! haha

If i was West African i would go to Algeria and settle there. it's the best North African country. All West Africa is welcome in Algeria, please come to Algiers and Oran. Everything is free here, Housing, food and free money every month.
@@XChiefxBanditX That is only possible because France gives you money. See how this works? You're better off now because of France. And now China is moving in, so good luck. The Chinese are less forgiving.
This really broke my heart and have me in tears. I didn’t realise how harsh the reality of migration by road is. This made me really appreciate my situation and grateful. Seeing young people like me chasing their dream and taking big risk that could possibly even end in death or other things. Life is not fair.
Sending a warm hug and lots of love.
Thinking that Europe will solve your problems only creates problems at your destination country.
They are not giving up their country, it’s like us from East Europe who come to the West for work and send money back home to the loved ones, and dreaming one day they’ll go back in their country when it’s all settled at least eastern europeans do that.
Thing is: You got the same mindset as us. Even better: You still have that extremely hard working spirit our previous generations had.
You cannot put East European people on the same balance with Africans.
Men dey struggle both inside and outside the country. God bless
Thank you very much for this documentary! Well done!
Watching this hurts and it brings up a bit of anger in me. We can get things right in Africa. It can be done and it must be done.
Has to be done. Even 10% of Africa cannot move to European countries without there being a civil war in those countries. What happened in France recently is only going to get worse as more Africans think that crashing into a place that they are not wanted is a good idea.
