- In this video we tackle the job of converting a Step Side truck to a Fleet Side. This turns out to be TWO projects in one because instead of just taking one bed off and installing another, we decided to build an entire Fleet Bed with a Wood Floor from SCRATCH! There's lots of great tips and tricks in this video whether you're doing a similar swap or just installing a new set of wood in your pickups bed. Dave Welch is a classic truck Specialist and he's got plenty of tricks for nearly every project on your classic!

usually i like stepsides but the lines are so nice on these trucks it just looks good to see them keep going down the bed

I'm looking to do a shortbed/woodfloor conversion on my c10, and this is just what the doctor ordered. So many helpful hints. I've had the bed off twice and never thought about taking the rear wheels off. Also, now I'm definitely building the bed off the truck, too. Thanks.

Dave, I do really like your bed mount “Short-Bolt” trick. Either 4 or 6, but if the bottom plate can move, drilling a slightly oversized hole, weld a nut on the inside will definitely make a cleaner look plus less places for water to pool.
Folks, don’t ever forget the end grain of wood when treating it with your favorite juice. It wicks water into the fibers of the wood simply as these are the bundles a straws threes they came from use to drink up the sap up the tree. Once cut and kiln dried, they don’t know it if is sap or water. Think of Maple syrup comes from, behind the bark & cambium layer, into the cellulose fibers.
Neat trick again Dave on the “Hidden” bed to frame bolt with welded nut. That will forever be my “Dave Fastener”!

Very nice, so on your site you sell the all in one bed kit, does that include the bolts and hardware or does that need to be purchased as well. My 72 short bed came with a 90 style bed and I want to pull it and put a short fleet side on.
Our complete bed kit comes with the necessary hardware.
Look better with stepside
Is the step side frame the same as the shortbed frame or will there still some cutting?

My bedsides stick out wider than the cab. Not sure why. I did re use the original bed supports.
How much wider? Sometimes it does look like they are 1/2" wider than the cab, but it's more of an illusion than a reality.
What size are those rims and tires? Looks great!
The wheels are 22" "Suave" by Billet Specialties. Not sure what the tires are.
So I’ve got a 1970 and it was converted to a dually, I’ve having a hard time finding wider wheel wells any suggestions? Or maybe a quick how to on how to do something like this?
You could pull wells off the stepside style truck and adapt them to work. That would look the most natural.

Yes it can. All the parts are available to do a complete conversion OR you can score a used bed and make the swap.

Why would anyone change a stepside bed for a fleetside. I guess to each their own
30 years ago everybody wanted stepsides, now the rage is fleetsides. Tastes change over time. Give it enough time and everybody is going to want flatbeds again.
