  • We went to Temple Street night market to try some of the street food stalls but ended up at Wing Fat Seafood Restaurant (Dai Pai Dong), which is what they call a big license stall.
For dinner, I ordered several items to try: salt and pepper squid, garlic and chili mantis shrimp, roast pigeon, garlic stirfry gai lan, and a clay pot of rice with pork ribs.
The food came out really quickly. The first dish delivered to our table was the salt and pepper squid. The squid was overly seasoned, with so much MSG on top that I had to try to shake some off before trying it. It was also overly greasy. The pieces weren’t cut evenly, so it was difficult to eat and not tasty.
The garlic chili mantis shrimp came out next, but I was not sure how to eat them. The seasoning on the mantis shrimp was good, but it was a challenging and tedious task to peel the shells off to eat. The shells were practically sticking to the flesh of the mantis shrimp.
The next dish presented was the garlic stir-fry gai lan. The dish didn't look appealing, and upon first bite, I could tell the veggie was old, chewy, and fibrous. The seasoning on it was also off-putting.
Next was the roast pigeon. This might’ve been the best dish of the night, as well as my husband's favourite. The roast pigeon skin was crispy, and the meat was tender and juicy. It was so good that we ate everything on the plate. The pigeon was also seasoned well.
Our final dish, claypot rice with pork ribs, came out. I got the server to pour the soy sauce in and set aside the rice to finish cooking. I tried to open it after three minutes and was told by the owner that it wasn't ready yet and I needed to leave it longer, so I did. After a while, we tried the rice, and it was good, but I wouldn’t say spectacular or anything. Just ok.
Overall, I think it's a good experience to give it a try at least once so you can form your own judgment. But I wouldn't come back again.
