You gotta check if your aftermarket intake needs a tune to run properly. Probably why you had idle issues or maybe a leak. Some intakes require you to tune car or else ECU will have trouble measuring the incoming air.

So your running what we like.to call neither cold or.short it's like a.medium hot air intake

What year is your car, on the later years the ecu learns the mod and adjusts

Map.it further from.engine and outside of bonnet then you have cold.air

How did this affect your mpg? Better or worse. Ive heard the short ram systems get lesser mpg than cold air intake

It does but like by 1 or 2 mpg. Stock airboxes don't really protect from heatsoak like people say. Just better at keeping contaminants out then CAI or short ram. If you want better throttle response at the low end aftermarket intake is the way. I don't ever drive my car faster than 110. Low end throttle response is exactly what I wanted. I have a the mishimoto silicone intake for 04 G sedan.
