Definitely the Icon Of The Seas because of its big forehead and it’s straight bow that looks like early 1900’s ship and I think that it should have that Normandie style bow
Ocean Majesty. She's quite an old cruise ship, but her overall side structure looks like a whale coming out of the water. And the MSC Seaview is missing. She looks like a shoe cardboard box.
I actually like the carnival princes, but on another note I rather like the new parabolic bow design, when it’s done right, though I agree with the number one

I think you'd need a time machine and go back to the halcyon days of cruising to see Queen Mary, Normadie, SS United States, SS France etc for beautiful ships. Today's offerings are tacky theme parks on water.
Agreed I've recently started doing 3d models of cruise ships and all 4 of my ocean cruise ships are on your top 10 worst list (via their identical sisters) - P&O Iona, Arvia, Ventura and Azura, Am hoping my next ship - P&O Arcadia isn't in the bottom 20!
@dexterous123 There's an EXTREMELY loud minority on the internet who worships everything that's "vintage" and hates everything that's "modern". People also believed ocean liners and Eiffel Tower were ugly af back in the day, for example.
It is hard being a cruise ship enjoyer when literally your favorite ship you've ever been on was put 9th place on this list But also I want to set a "challenge" you could call it. I want you to now make a list of, in your opinion, the best looking cruise ships. But here's the catch: You cannot use Cunard (more specifically the QM2), or any cruise ships that were once ocean liners but got converted.
So I took a look at some of the cruise ships we have around to figure out what I'd consider the best looking ones and holy crap that was a dire situation. Disney Dream class ships are the first one I found which I actually liked. Also liked MV Balmoral and MS Queen Victoria but after that I gave up because some of these were monstrously ugly. Last one belongs to Cunard, but there's no way that was ever an ocean liner and there are other units of that type in operation too under different banners (Vista-class)
Some of the Disney ships are quite nice, smaller cruise ships like the Silver ships are quite nice. P&O and Holland America line also have some nice ships. If I had to pick three I'd say the former Oceana, the Artania and the Aurora are the best looking cruise ships in my opinion.
The metal tubes were confirmed to be useless BMT (Big Metalic Things) by one of the crew member in one of the on-board presentation. I was on Sapphire Princess last week for an Alaska cruise; the bow extension to the Promenade Deck was a unique location for wild life sighting as it is not to high nor too low. Prefect ship for such type of cruises.
I have cruised on the Caribbean Princess and I love the Skywalker Lounge. It's a great reading room during the day with a nice view. It definitely looks ugly from the outside though. The bridge wing supports are also unattractive, but the concept is what drew me to the Grand Princess for my first cruise (Alaska). I saw a photo of the platform with people on it and thought "I want to be there". Sadly, some Princess ships no longer allow passengers to access that space.
We went on this ship over a year ago, and, although not that attractive from the rear, the shade it offers for the aft pool is wonderful. The Skywalker lounge is also pretty cool, like being in a totally separate place, not on a ship.
We enjoyed our recent cruise on the Caribbean Princess! The crew is top notch and we loved how the staff is from all over the world! We had a great stateroom steward and onboard activity supervisor! Her name was Silviya!
The other ships in the same class still have a Skywalker's; it's just not propped up on stilts at the very stern, it's tucked in behind the funnel. While that alone doesn't give those ships an elegant finish, it's certainly an improvement. And there's no real loss in terms of the views from inside the room. As to the viewing platform atop the bridge, yes, that has been lost on Princess' newer ships. What's really regrettable, though, is that the wrap-around promenade on the Grand Class of vessels is gone on the Royal Class ships. Why, I don't know. I was just on _Ruby Princess_ and people were out walking and/or sitting on the promemade every day and evening. On _Discovery Princess_ , passengers seemed to go out on the kind of... platforms on "Promenade" Deck just to smoke.
But there is one ship that is kind of conflicting. It’s that the Cunard Queen Elizabeth has all of those features to be considered ‘Ugly’, like the superstructure blocks and the flat stern. It’s just that Cunard has a unique charm to it that you don’t get with other cruise lines!
I would personally disagree with you on scarlet lady, I would say she’s one of the more graceful of the floating hotel variants, she has this modern and sleek look which mixed with her color pallet complements the whole aesthetic. Which other ships such as those from royal Caribbean (particularly the oasis class) don’t do as well, as they very much look blocky with their size and not to mention their color pallet doesn’t help much differentiate from a boring blocky hotel. Also I feel like scarlet lady does the whole bow superstructure thing better than other ships who have attempted it. But that’s just my opinion.
I traveled on the Caribbean princes and I loved the sky lounge it looks like a spoiler on the back of a sports car very unique but each to their own haha
I must say Carnival Destiny and her sisters were done a very big favour by Carnival's trademark funnel, which does a lot for them and distracts from the arguably stubby bow and the apartment block look of all the balconies. A good funnel can do wonders
When I worked at Holland America Line, the Princess ships with the Skywalker lounge were nicknamed "shopping trolleys" by my colleagues due to that feature resembling the handle of a shopping trolley.
HAL still has some decent looking ships. I went to Alaska on the Volendam couple months back. Class act. The Sapphire Princess was birthed next to us in Vancouver. Still a fugly ship without the shopping cart handle. That well deck that runs around the bow is really strange. Makes it look like a fat bird.
The early 2000s SS Norway, she was just getting too old and they renovated the hell out her. The SS France and the Norway are still my favorite ship/cruise ship, but by that time she had just been milked dry almost. Still a shame she had to leave us in the way she did.
I agree with all of the ten except for the Caribbean Princess, i’ve sailed on many of those princess class ships with the Emerald Princess being my favorite. I also sailed on the Caribbean Princess twice, I really really like the bow of the vessel, which allows passengers to walk around and look out, something that is very unique and I haven’t seen on any other ship. this was a great video and I never really thought about the tiny small bows like you mention, but they are very unattractive. Look forward to seeing other videos you produce.
I 100% agree with you and Caribbean Princess was the 1st cruise ship i had ever sailed on and i wont lie, that bow is one of the most unique things about the ship which makes it beutiful.
Something that I have noticed is that ships with these designs tend to look less imposing if the hull is not painted the same color as the superstructure. Case in point, the ships of Fred. Olsen Cruise Lines, which not only seem to be more visually dignified, but also lack a corporate naming convention, and I am thus able to take them more seriously. That's not to say that putting the company's name in that of its ships can't work, because the Union-Castle Line did just that. But the reason it worked for them was that the majority of them were named after actual castles, and their names would still sound really nice even without the "Castle" suffix, as opposed to, say, Princess Cruise Lines, where their names fall apart without the corporate part of their names. Not to mention that the similar names cause them to blur together for me. It may help with brand recognition, but almost no one is going to remember the names of the ships themselves.
Absolutely. Those Carnival ships have counterparts that sail for Holland America and Cunard and a black or dark blue hull makes those ships look about a hundred times better!
They're all terrible, but I actually kind of like Carnival Destiny. What I hate most about modern passenger ships is how tall the superstructure is. But the design of this ship makes it look substantially sleeker. With a longer bow it'd look really rather nice.
I like the Scarlet Lady I think she represents where modern cruise ship design is going in the future. I understand that she is nothing compared to Ocean Liners however i think she is a bold ship and stands out from other coppy and pasted ship designs
P & O Australia have 2 Grand Class ships that still have their shopping trolley handles attached, Pacific Adventure and Pacific Encounter. They look OK to me but the nightclub shades the pool area below it too much.
Not a bad listing! I’d be hard-pressed to disagree with most of your selections. Going in the opposite direction, IMHO to this day nothing has ever topped the graceful lines, beautiful interiors and elegance of the ill-fated SS Normandie. If you agree (with the premise), I think viewers and followers of your excellent channel might find interest in a video discussing the relative safety of these floating behemoths. Because in my opinion (after listening to many experts, none of whom were employed by any cruise line, and were thus much freer to give their true thoughts and opinions. This includes well-known maritime architects, retired USCG officers, and former mariners, including former captains of the world’s largest cruise ships.) - all of these massive vessels share one thing in common: They are all catastrophes at sea waiting to happen. ALL cruise lines will make endless pronouncements that safety of passengers and crew is and always will be their No. 1 priority. Rubbish. As these ships grow ever larger, capable of accommodating 5,000+ passengers and 1,500 or more crew (on some of the largest), the risks of an incident or accident (especially one occurring during a scheduled “at sea” day) continue to escalate. I don’t believe for one second that a ship, out at sea and possibly sinking, will successfully launch all its lifeboats and rafts without enormous loss of life. These vessels are loaded with elderly passengers and children, who will be slower and more difficult to put in lifeboats, life rafts or transfer to another vessel. Look at the Costa Concordia disaster, which tragically took 32 souls. The main reason the horrific death toll wasn’t MUCH higher was because it capsized right next to land. These ginormous modern cruisers are nowhere near as safe as the public has been led to believe. Those experts I’ve read and listened to? Just some of the entirely possible and predictable disasters which will unfortunately occur to one of these vessels: 1. Fire on ship. With crews frequently speaking multiple languages, even with regular training and drills a fire could easily overwhelm a ship. And depending upon its location, rendering some or all lifeboats useless. 2. Ice. Still a potential ship killer even 121 years after Titanic and with the International Ice Patrol, modern radars and excellent meteorological data. 3. Storms. I have heard expert after expert explain that these modern cruisers are extremely top heavy and could easily be capsized or severely damaged in extreme weather. In fact, that’s already happened many times, most recently with a major line. Loss of all main power and propulsion. 4. Terrorism. The dirty little secret the industry doesn’t want to talk about, but every one of these modern cruise ships, loaded with Westerners, is a target for terrorists. It’s not just the cargo ships. A major accident at sea, with the vessel in risk of foundering would probably result in thousands of lives lost. All the lines also claim they abide by or obey all SOLAS Regulations or suggestions. Don’t believe it. Mixing a profit motive with millions of lives annually is a recipe for disaster. Fortunately, in the past ~20 years most incidents have been relatively minor. I think your viewers might appreciate a look at the real risks taken when booking a cruise and sailing on these fun, but potentially dangerous ships. (And I haven’t even touched on the subject of crime on board the cruisers, another dirty secret, but crime is rampant on so many of these vessels, with jurisdiction hazy. Everything from cabin rading to assault.). TY for today’s video.
I agree completely. Trying to disembark 8,000 souls from a sinking ship could be disastrous. These ships are top heavy, and fire could be a major issue with so many people on board.
Yes I agree with all that you have said too. I was a cruise ambassador for many years and was lucky enough to sail on some of the greats from the 60's. I quit cruising in 2010 when politics and cruise companies like Carnival started to change previously independent companies identity and pressed their own marketing plans. The whole atmosphere of cruising changed for the worst with many nasty traits creeping in. Younger cruise guests, passengers whatever they are called now, only know the current concepts and are none the wiser of better times. 5000 passengers is far too many panicking individuals to deal with that almost always do crazy things in an emergency situation. I have seen many idiots over the years who would almost certainly die in an emergency or indeed cause somebody else to lose their lives due to their own selfish behaviour. Indeed some passengers these days seem to have great difficulty with actually staying on board when the ship is at sea!! 🙄
Yes, and terrorism is why there are no tours of engine rooms or the bridge. And I 100% agree that Normandie was the finest looking liner of all time. And the epitome of Art Deco.
@@johnnyhollis9977 : Thank you for your comments and your perspective. We would appear to agree on much. As a former employee of one of more lines, you have an insider’s perspective I lack. Although I am not a mariner or former employee of any cruise line, I am a lifelong amateur historian of just about everything shipping, ships and the industry. I think I would have very much enjoyed passage to or from America-Europe during the Golden Age(s) of transatlantic travel. Sailing on the Ile de France, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth, or any of those storied ships must have been a memorable series of days. Back when an ocean liner was the only method of passage from NYC to European destinations. I have only been on one cruise, a small, coastal ship with limited passengers but wonderful food. But there is one trip I can only hope to take whilst still young enough to enjoy: The fabled transatlantic crossing, NYC to Southampton or London aboard the Cunard QM2. And ONLY the QM2, although her Sisters are beautiful. Cunard, as you undoubtedly know, is owned by Carnival Cruise Lines (Which I think of as DisneyWorld on pontoons); a sad fact IMO. Cunard (and Carnival) claim that the Cunarders are sailed independently, without the heavy hand of the corporate parent. I have also read that with the QM2, the ship has a British milieu. An inside stateroom can be booked for a relatively low cost, and provided one doesn’t go overboard (figuratively 😂😂) with the booze, a $900 ticket does not become a $3,500 ticket. Perhaps with your background you might offer some suggestions or insight. There is literally no ship on Earth, including her Sisters, comparable to the QM2.
Hmm, interesting video. I would only disagree with your comment of AIDAnova’s livery that you consider outdated. The livery is more or less the same for *every* AIDAship ever since the first AIDA (the late AIDAcara). This is the brand‘s key image that sets every AIDAship apart from the (bland) competition. One of the best-known brands in its core market in Germany. Replacing the livery would be like changing MickeyD’s arches or Coke’s flowing lines because the look so roundish… A ship without the Kissing Mouth is no AIDAship. They’ve managed the trick that people don’t go on a cruise on ship X by cruise line Y. People go on an *AIDAcruise*. (“We’ll sail on AIDA”) The distinct ship is often less of a priority.
@@skovner perhaps the United States/Astoria before she was refitted renamed; look at photos of the original ms Stockholm all white; a beauty as well !! She is still a beauty !!
Just wanted to correct the Caribbean Princess - Only the Grand had the Skywalkers Lounge removed. The Star, Golden and Caribbean (when they still existed in the Princess Fleet) did not. We (those of us onboard) jokingly and lovingly called these ships the "Shopping Cart Model".
I don't know, I think MSC World Europa's design has alot of charm to it. I like the knife edge bow, I like the shaping on the top if the superstructure (even if it is only a facade) I like the superstructure going all the way to the tip of the bow, it makes it look modern and sleek like a fish. And even though the stern isn't the best, i like that they bothered with shaping it at all, compared to the gaping maw of the Oasis class' stern.
I legit predicted icon class In class one day I was at school I was thinking of cruise ships and wanted to draw some after I’m done with my homework when I was done I wanted to draw the largest cruise ship I was thinking a mix of the world Europas stern and The Oasis classes bow so I draw looks horrible I decided to add a BIG MASSIVE GLASS dome at the top I looked at it then knew it was bad when icon came out I legit saw the big glass dome at the front I was like WHAT THATS MY GLASS dome
I think the Sky lounge gives the Caribbean Princess a neat look and I wasn't a fan of the bridge support beams I have a lot of wonderful memories on that ship ❤
I sailed on Star Princess, currently known as the P&O Pacific Encounter, and spent alot of time in the bar that structure at the rear of the ship. Made me fall in love with Princess in general
aw, i love the norwegian encore, i was just on it for an alaska cruise. i thought it looked odd when i first looked it up, but over time, and especially when i finally arrived in person, i actually quite like it. the part above the bridge was the thing i didn’t like before, but i don’t think it looks too bad now, and especially after going on and realizing it was the (amazing) observation lounge and buffet, i just couldn’t complain. also, the hull art is simple, but i still quite like it. it was by a spanish artist, i forgot his name, but i like how flowy it is and it is 100% better than it just being plain. in fact that’s one reason why norwegian is my favorite line, i absolutely love the hull art and how they commission in different artists to design them, with the getaway artwork being my favorite, and giving it another reason to be my favorite cruise ship of all time, that i’ve been on anyway
@@Connor-pn4yb yeah, i like the way the breakaway ships look in general, so i don’t get why it’s on here lol, i loved being on the ship, and i think it looks great
I love Caribbean Princess even though your observations are undeniably true. Maybe it's its "ugly duck" appearance that I like. I'll be sailing on her until they tow her to the scrapyard, and then maybe sail on Scarlet Lady. ;)
I sailed on Ruby Princess and liked her too (despite being terribly ugly). Designing ships to look nice from the outside comes with its tradeoffs, no doubt.
Naval architect here. Tumblehome does not really improve stability. While the narrower deck and superstructure reduce weight and lower KG, as the ship rolls, the waterplane area decreases and so you end up with less righting moment at larger angles of heel.
Pride of America looks fine to me. Yeah, it has that short bow and stern all modern cruise ships have, but the whole ship seems to be adequately proportional. Nothing is too massive or too small, it doesn't look like an oversized hotel resort glued on top of a ship's hull, its bridge looks nice... I'd say, IMHO, it doesn't deserve a spot on this list, but I thank you for adding it because I didn't know about it and it's nice finding out about this ship.
Thank you for your honest reviews! I just watched one about the new Cunard Queen Anne a few minutes prior to watching your piece. The one on the Queen Anne was a puff piece flattering a completely unremarkable ship, no doubt not wanting to risk his access to Cunard cruises and any future perks.
I think perhaps making an actual hotel float would look better than many modern cruise ships. Also, I agree that the Norwegian Prima resembles the Airbus Beluga, but at least the Beluga has a purposeful reason for its looks 😂
This!! So glad you said it i totally agree with your list but i do like the Grand Class look ugly yes but i guess since I’ve seen them since 1998 I’ve gotten use to the look
I thought I’d disagree with some of these but after watching I definitely agree with most. I really only disagree with Caribbean Princess as it’s very nostalgic to me and the “shopping cart” adds character. The Prima deserved number one, it’s an abomination and looks like a hermit crab.
The shopping cart ships I don't think were ugly at all. I thought they were visually attractive and I loved them and I still enjoy enjoy working on them. The handle was removed from the Grand because it needed constant inspection and maintenance. Amazing views. It was deck 19. On our new Sun Princess, we have passenger decks on deck 17! Decks all the way up to 21!
I would add the hideous Icon of the Seas to this group. I’ve never really minded Oasis class. For being so huge, Royal managed to make them quite attractive. But with Icon class it seems like they went to designers asking for a slightly larger Oasis but make it as ugly as possible. I don’t like the new light blue hull in any of the ships but it seems especially offensive on Icon.
Man this video is so good I had to come back and watch it multiple times. I love when aesthetics (or lack thereof) and technology meet, be it in cars, ships or planes. I'd love a top 10 video of the most aesthetic cruise ships 😊. Your analysis of the grand class design was an eye opener to me, making me wonder "what the hell where the designers thinking" 😂.
Good list but I think you missed one . The newest Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas ship. My first impression after seeing the picture was “what an ugly ship!”. From the stubby bow to the huge glass dome that looks like an upside down colander and an arch at the stern that makes it look like a cheap plastic tote overloaded with knick knacks, IMO the design team really missed the mark with overall appearance on this one.
im here for most of it but... the prima?? it's pretty, and its blue livery stands out but also blends with the ocean nicely. it is modern, and sure, maybe at weird angles it might not look like a 10/10, but its still a great ship
Now I'd be curious what you think of AIDA's smaller ships, like the AIDAprima and AIDAperla. Imo they're among the nicest-looking ships from the 2010s.
Really? Nova is just a supersized version of prima and perla, I think. Personally I’m more of a Sphinx+ class guy like AIDAsol etc. like them both outside and inside. Feels like coming home, every time.
@@chubbywombat7402 Really? I've been on AIDAsol and AIDAnova and liked the latter one much more. Everything is just bigger and nicer. Of course it's newer, but I was quite impressed.
I guess the disappearing bow will be the new normal in the future. And I somehow like it. Of course this shape has nothing to do with traditional oceanliners but in my eyes it is a sincere design evolution which can get its very own elegant aesthetics.
The ship that ended life as Ocean Gala 1 (ex-Ocean Gala, Island Escape, Viking Serenade, Stardancer, and Scandanavia) did not win any beauty prizes. In her defense, the ship was originally a cruiseferry designed for function. Royal Caribbean converted her into a cruise ship by removing the car deck and converting them into passenger cabins. There were all sorts of odd angles that gave the ship a strange look.
Too funny. On our last cruise, we were docked by the Norwegian Epic. I commented that it was the ugliest ship I'd ever seen. But I forgot about Caribbean Princess....we sailed on that one, and it definitely deserves the list. There are several things I don't like about Valiant Lady from an "onboard features" standpoint, but not sure she deserved the ugly label. At least her light gray and red color scheme looks better than the big white hulks.
The Caribbean Princess and all of the Grand Princess successors grew on me over time. They're nowhere near as attractive as the old Sun Princess (1995) or the current Coral Princess, but I find them more interesting from the exterior than any of the newer Princess fleet. As others have said, the original Skywalker's lounge provides some of the best views I've ever had from a ship. It is my all time favorite venue on any cruise ship. I really miss it on the Royal class. I'm booking Alaska on Caribbean in 2025 for that reason alone. My God those Norwegian ships are ugly. I crossed paths with Norwegian Joy in Mexico last year, and it's as awkward in person as it is on film. Too tall above the bridge.
The Sea Princess (Sun Class) was the first cruise ship I sailed on, and it endeared me early on to Princess. We've sailed since on the Ruby & Emerald. I agree though, from the stern... not all that attractive, especially when you think of the Oasis or Freedom class by RC.
Well Said @timfross. I agree completely. :) Great views! And why are the some of the latest RCCL ships missing? Whatever class of RCCL ship that has that lame crane with the viewing "ball" at the end of it would is hideous. It makes Las Vegas look classy...and it's not.
Totally agree with your choice! Cruise ships have steadily become more and more ugly since the modern rash of floating bricks that have been developed since the 1990's. Elegance and shear grandeur has been lacking for sometime and I feel sure that when this lot go to the breakers not many people will miss them that much. Many are nothing more than floating fun fair amusement parks and cruising being a secondary factor. Sure they have some amazing idea's incorporated into their fabric but the overall design has gone a bit weird. They are too big too but that is the fault of the greedy cruise company's trying to cram as many wallets on board as possible with the minimum of staff. Gone are the great days of moderately sized elegant ships of the 50's to 80's that had clean lines and looked immaculate. Some of these new giant leviathans barely go anywhere these days. Some of the exterior paint jobs look a bit tasteless too! Sorry I just think that they are a joke rocking up. I certainly wouldn't be proud arriving somewhere on one of them!
Totally agree about the paint jobs! Many are starting to look like the graffiti-covered walls in the urban ghetto.... I have wonderful memories of working on the 47th floor of Rockefeller Center many years ago and looking down to see the Leonardo DaVinci berthed in the Hudson River right below ... what serene, tasteful glamour...
you can still fin smaller cruise ships, the reason bigger ships are more and more popular is because the bigger the ship the more events and attractions they can cram on board which will attract a wider range of people. That's especially true since they tend to mainly attract families so they'll go for bigger ships since it will give their kids more things to do and give the parents more variety as well; the bigger the ship the more types of people they can appease. Bigger ships also mean things like more shows, more famous entertainers, and a wider variety of foods thanks to more and larger kitchens.
@@arthas640I agree with a lot of what you say, indeed I have cruised on some 100,000 ton+ ships myself. Quite a lot of recent complaints that seems to be growing according to some cruise bloggers is that people are complaining more and more at having to queue for a lot of things these days. Possibly not helped by less crew in the hotel side of things being available, as cruise company's try to cut back on expenditure. The amount of things to do on board now especially on the bigger ships is definitely geared towards a family with children! Personally I don't like the huge leviathans now being operated for a few reasons but each to his or her own! 😉⚓👍
It is bad when ferry companies like Viking Line have better looking ships Also where is Icon of the Seas, that might be one of the ugliest ships currently in existence, at least when it comes to the bow
I remember the original design proposal for ‘America World City’ which was to be the largest passenger ship ever. Basically a low-freeboard supertanker hull with a selection of tower blocks on top.
Cruise ship are pretty ugly big bricks on top but some times they are beautiful some are Oasis class, Quantum class (not that beautiful but in my opinion kinda pretty) My most favourite is the Sovereign of the seas it’s a classic cruise ship i like that got scrapped in 2020 she looks like a classic she doesn’t have balconies just on both sides of the ship she looks beautiful without those balconies her front is round like that of MV Georgic White star line . Her stern looks like that of a classic 1960s Ocean liner upon from the big windows at the back she also got some balconies at the top deck at a refit in the 2000s Built in 1986 and was the largest cruise ship at its time (my explanation is bad Ik )
Only a few cruise ships I consider to be sleek or good-looking Vista-class cruise ships by Holland American Line, P&O Cruises, Cunard, Costa Cruises, Millennium-class of Celebrity Cruises, the former Prisendam (Viking Sun), Sun-class cruise ship by Princess Cruises, P&O Cruises, P&O Australia, Century-class by Celebrity Cruises, Royal Caribbean Cruises Legend-class, particularly Legend of the Sea, and Splendour of the Sea. My favorites are P&0 Cruises Aurora (2000) and Oriana (1995).
I was shocked when i saw that your number 10 pick was a ship i worked on with Norwegian in Hawaii! As a matter of fact, i was on the ship when we sailed from Honolulu to San Francisco for a month to be drydocked and made over and painted in the livery shown in this video. Funny i never noticed how short the bow looked until you pointed it out. I was probably working too hard to notice. But i also have some of the fondest memories from that time, from seeing some of the coolest things and experiences of my life, and some of the best memories of friends and times i had on that ship, people i miss so very much, i hope they have wonderful lives and all their wishes come true.
I do agree with some of your choices, however in regards to the Shopping Trollies, I did happen to debut Grand Princess which was the first and also Caribbean Princess which was the 4th. Grand is the only one to have the lounge removed, as since she was the first of the class, was also the heaviest. The lounge itself was and is the best nightclub at sea without doubt! I happened to do the press tour in Istanbul before departing on her maiden voyage. All were amazed. The middle two sisters still have their lounges and are with P&O Australia. The one great thing about the nightclub up there, is no complaints from staterooms below!
Let's be honest , cruise ships just keep getting uglier as they come out . They are getting too large and look like a stiff wind would blow them over .

No shortage of ugly cruise ships to choose from.
Just like there's no shortage of ugly ocean liners.
@dexterous123 There's an EXTREMELY loud minority on the internet who worships everything that's "vintage" and hates everything that's "modern". People also believed ocean liners and Eiffel Tower were ugly af back in the day, for example.
@dexterous123 Yes, this is the case with architecture as well. They'll also throw around the term "souless" very often.
@dexterous123 facts. It's like comparing a fishing boat with a cargo ship.
@dexterous123some ocean liners are cool but a whole lot of them are ugly
It is hard being a cruise ship enjoyer when literally your favorite ship you've ever been on was put 9th place on this list
But also I want to set a "challenge" you could call it. I want you to now make a list of, in your opinion, the best looking cruise ships. But here's the catch: You cannot use Cunard (more specifically the QM2), or any cruise ships that were once ocean liners but got converted.
QM2 couldnt be on a list of cruise ships anyway as its an ocean liner
@@SwagCat852 ik but people list it as a cruise ship often because it does do cruises quite frequently
Yes, yes. Good.
Some of the Disney ships are quite nice, smaller cruise ships like the Silver ships are quite nice. P&O and Holland America line also have some nice ships. If I had to pick three I'd say the former Oceana, the Artania and the Aurora are the best looking cruise ships in my opinion.
the Shopping Cart handle ship I always thought it looked cool. I always thought it was more like a spoiler you see on supercars
That's one way to look at it!
I was never fond of spoilers on cars.
I've always thought the Sapphire Princess looked nice compared to other cruise ships.
What’s up with those weird metal tube things on the funnel? I was on it a week ago and they were plugged up and appeared to serve no purpose.
@@tylerlittle4436 They are completely cosmetic. Meant to look like air turbines.
Icon of the seas should top this list imo. That bulbous front end makes it look like a Barreleye fish.
I honestly don’t think anything can top Icon of the Seas lol
"Human lasagne" 😂
So true.
Gigantic boil/pimple over her bridge
Megamind looking ahh
My opinion too. 😨
Not only that, but it was also the coldest spot on the ship, perfect after you've burned up soaking in rays all day.
All I see is a soulless council buildings that float. Pretty much no more traditional ship characteristics.
This video is an unexpected surprise but a welcome one nonetheless.
I absolutely love top ten list like this. 🎉
I love the Caribbean Princess
The last one should have been named Norwegian Nightmare.
I must say Carnival Destiny and her sisters were done a very big favour by Carnival's trademark funnel, which does a lot for them and distracts from the arguably stubby bow and the apartment block look of all the balconies. A good funnel can do wonders
When I worked at Holland America Line, the Princess ships with the Skywalker lounge were nicknamed "shopping trolleys" by my colleagues due to that feature resembling the handle of a shopping trolley.
...and you mentioned it in the video.
MSC World Europa is the most beautiful ship i have ever cruised with
World Europa shouldn't even be in this list, she's a savage looking ship, I was only on it last week. She's a beast 🌎🚢🌎
I 100% agree with you and Caribbean Princess was the 1st cruise ship i had ever sailed on and i wont lie, that bow is one of the most unique things about the ship which makes it beutiful.
they gave the caribbean princess the titanic, oil tanker, shopping cart and space ship
Spot on! Union Castle had real ships that were visually beautiful. Arriving on one of those ships was a great experience. 😉👍
fred olsen's ships look pretty good
Norwegian Costa Carnival Princess of the Seas
Absolutely. Those Carnival ships have counterparts that sail for Holland America and Cunard and a black or dark blue hull makes those ships look about a hundred times better!
@@johnnyhollis9977The _Arundel Castle's_ name in particular always stood out to me for how pleasing it is to read and say.
Your description is professional yet in a humorous way. Very enjoyable video. Thank you.
I don't think we should even call the last one a cruise ship
Icon of the Seas should be number 1 in my opinion. I can't believe the designers looked at it and said it was okay...
Yep, I agree. That humongous glass forehead is UGLY!
what
Sail on her. You're basing your opinion on her exterior (as I did). No words can describe her amazing interior beauty.
@@user-lj1zs3wl5l The video is about exterior looks, not interior though
Princess cruise ships are the ugliest ships, but saying this isn't enough. I hate that bow and stern with a burning passion! It looks like a toy!
Just some of the entirely possible and predictable disasters which will unfortunately occur to one of these vessels:
@@skovner : Well stated. I completely agree.

Replacing the livery would be like changing MickeyD’s arches or Coke’s flowing lines because the look so roundish…
A ship without the Kissing Mouth is no AIDAship. They’ve managed the trick that people don’t go on a cruise on ship X by cruise line Y.
People go on an *AIDAcruise*. (“We’ll sail on AIDA”) The distinct ship is often less of a priority.
Why did this video remind me of a "Ugly Dog Contest?"
You nailed them all. Holy cow, those ships are all two-bag ugly (one bag for her head and one bag for your’s in case her’s falls off).

I don't know, I think MSC World Europa's design has alot of charm to it.
I like the knife edge bow, I like the shaping on the top if the superstructure (even if it is only a facade)
I like the superstructure going all the way to the tip of the bow, it makes it look modern and sleek like a fish.
And even though the stern isn't the best, i like that they bothered with shaping it at all, compared to the gaping maw of the Oasis class' stern.

I think the Sky lounge gives the Caribbean Princess a neat look and I wasn't a fan of the bridge support beams I have a lot of wonderful memories on that ship ❤
I still had a great time aboard Ruby Princess as well, even though the ship is ugly in my opinion. Thanks for watching
I sailed on Star Princess, currently known as the P&O Pacific Encounter, and spent alot of time in the bar that structure at the rear of the ship. Made me fall in love with Princess in general
aw, i love the norwegian encore, i was just on it for an alaska cruise. i thought it looked odd when i first looked it up, but over time, and especially when i finally arrived in person, i actually quite like it. the part above the bridge was the thing i didn’t like before, but i don’t think it looks too bad now, and especially after going on and realizing it was the (amazing) observation lounge and buffet, i just couldn’t complain. also, the hull art is simple, but i still quite like it. it was by a spanish artist, i forgot his name, but i like how flowy it is and it is 100% better than it just being plain. in fact that’s one reason why norwegian is my favorite line, i absolutely love the hull art and how they commission in different artists to design them, with the getaway artwork being my favorite, and giving it another reason to be my favorite cruise ship of all time, that i’ve been on anyway
i love encore too! I have never been on her, but I have been on NCL joy her sister ship. encore is the only ship that I disagree on
@@Connor-pn4yb yeah, i like the way the breakaway ships look in general,

I love Caribbean Princess even though your observations are undeniably true. Maybe it's its "ugly duck" appearance that I like. I'll be sailing on her until they tow her to the scrapyard, and then maybe sail on Scarlet Lady. ;)
I sailed on Ruby Princess and liked her too (despite being terribly ugly). Designing ships to look nice from the outside comes with its tradeoffs, no doubt.
aw i like the sunshine. im also going on her in 2024 and even if she's ugly ive herd she's still a fun time. plus she has history.
I don’t even find her that ugly she looks relatively normal to me
I do not find her ugly at all.😀
Naval architect here.
I've been on one of the Grand Class ships too. Despite the look, I do have a soft spot for that particular ship.
Dude the Aida nova is the most beautiful ship on earth
i tought the norwegian's cruise ships werent that ugly exept the epic 1
Uh oh. I really like the appearance of the Virgin cruise ships. They work for my aesthetic. Though hotel stacked on a barge is frightfully accurate
I thought I’d disagree with some of these but after watching I definitely agree with most. I really only disagree with Caribbean Princess as it’s very nostalgic to me and the “shopping cart” adds character. The Prima deserved number one, it’s an abomination and looks like a hermit crab.
I know Icon of the Seas isn’t out yet but it definitely belongs on this list
Yeah idk what RCL was thinking, all of there ship classes have been elegant except icon. I still prefer Icon over Virgin ships and the new NCL and MSC
@dexterous123 they don’t have to but would be nice if they still looked like ships
Disagree, I love the icon for just how unapologetically huge it looks.
The Queen Mary 2 is very ugly from the bow, the protruding things from the front in my opinion are very ugly
I actually think Caribbean Princess looks cool its a ship with a spoiler! Also I like the Scarlet Lady too.
The Cunard ones are normally quite nice, but their new one Queen Anne looks terrible, it has way too much on top of the bridge
I thought this too. Too top leavy on top of the bridge.
Queen Mary two has a beautiful Design, being porportionate, and elegant
Good list but I think you missed one . The newest Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas ship. My first impression after seeing the picture was “what an ugly ship!”. From the stubby bow to the huge glass dome that looks like an upside down colander and an arch at the stern that makes it look like a cheap plastic tote overloaded with knick knacks, IMO the design team really missed the mark with overall appearance on this one.
Gosh so true! That bulb like look on top!
Nope.
She's certainly ugly!I can't believe I've seen some people who seriously think she looks good!
I thought the same but having seen the Icon up close firsthand I changed my mind. She is beautiful in person, at least from the front.
im here for most of it but... the prima?? it's pretty, and its blue livery stands out but also blends with the ocean nicely. it is modern, and sure, maybe at weird angles it might not look like a 10/10, but its still a great ship
Seems like a lot of people agree with you in the comments. I truly don't understand, but y'all are free to your opinions.
@@chubbywombat7402 yeah i was on all AIDA classes and the sphinx class is the best
No hate but i like some of these ships that were shown on the list * World Europa,AidaNova,Norwegian Prima* 😢
I originally hated Oasis class ships since they look too fat… but compare to these… the Oasis class looked relatively elegant…
I totally agree with all of your choices……and I worked for one of the cruise lines mentioned.
Thank you so much for mentioning the scarlet lady!!! I think she’s so ugly
You can update this video to include the new Icon of the Seas ....... a true floating petri dish.
Interesting video! Can you please make the opposite video? The top 10 most beautiful (in your opinion of course) cruise ships in the market? 🙏
Yes, I'm thinking of doing that. I'm glad you liked this one.
I had no idea cruise ships had gotten this bad. Thank you for opening my eyes and voiding my stomach.
@@anivee5863 😉👍
you can still fin smaller cruise ships, the reason bigger ships are more and more popular is because the bigger the ship the more events and attractions they can cram on board which will attract a wider range of people.
Norwegian Prima: "looks like the Airbus Beluga"
Icon of the Seas: exists
You are spot on with your choices, especially when it comes to Norwegian Cruise Lines and Virgin. The design of those vessels is grotesque.
It is bad when ferry companies like Viking Line have better looking ships
Also where is Icon of the Seas, that might be one of the ugliest ships currently in existence, at least when it comes to the bow
I audibly gagged at number one. Surprised even myself with that.

You should make a similar video, but instead of showing ugly cruise ships, you display some of the prettier ones.
I like modern ships like Valiant Lady and Scarlet Lady. They have their own nature. And it might be the future of cruise ships.
Aida nova was from the 2010s decade
I would add Icon of the Seas somewhere in this list, with its hideous dome and wierd looking funnel design
I haven't been paying much attention to the reception of Icon, so I'm surprised to see how many people find her particularly unattractive.
I love the Epic. I have sailed on it 3 times, twice transAtlantic. It has the BEST hot tub in its spa. The arrangement of the buffet is great.
the norwegian prima is kinda unique
Great video, and I agree with you 100, especially the NCL ships
Let's be honest , cruise ships just keep getting uglier as they come out . They are getting too large and look like a stiff wind would blow them over .
Or into another cruise ship… or the dock… 😱
I think the carnival ships look good
The Pacific Encounter and Pacific Adventure (both currently in Australia) still have the " shopping trolley " at the rear.
Yeah, I've since realized that.
I know you missed symphony of the seas
