You know, I was going to say some suggestions, but I literally could not think of a single pretty cruise ship off the top of my head. Kind of concerning.
I don't like the aesthetics of cruise ships. Having said that, Disney Wish, Disney Wonder, and Disney Magic are pretty easy on the eyes. Probably because they were at least partly inspired by ocean liners of yore. And nothing beats an ocean liner in aesthetics Hmm.. 🤔 No, that's it.
So thrilled to see you back!! Agree on the list entirely. The late 1980s and early 1990s had the best looking ships, IMO. The sub-100k GT purpose built ones. They are all being scrapped right now, it seems. These 10 are the best looking ones left. Cheers!
That number one for Icon definitely gave me shock and a chuckle. I didn’t think cruise lines could come up with anything more hideous than Norwegian Epic for example. But Lego of the Seas takes the cake.
I find that painting a cruise ship's hull a color other than white really helps with the aesthetics of her, as it breaks up the monotony of her superstructure and makes her look less comically tall, and having a non-corporate name helps me take her more seriously. I pretty much always point to the ships of Fred Olsen Cruises as examples of this: They share a naming convention, but one that is more subtle and helps her be defined as more than just "a ship owned by the company."
I completely agree with your point about the naming conventions. I think it's great for a fleet to have a theme to its names, but it should be creative.
@@TheGreatBigMove If you want a fleet with a corporate naming convention done right, look at the Union-Castle Line. Not only did they name their ships after physical locations rather than abstract concepts, but the names would still hold up even without the "Castle" suffix.
The SS Norway 1980-1990 (before they changed the funnel color to all dark blue.) To me, its a beautifully unique ship, and especially with her 2 tenders added on her bow. Even with the added cabins above the bridge, it just adds a unique look. And these re-purposed ocean liners to cruise ships add a lot of unique features that wouldnt normally be on a modern cruise ship, like an enclosed promenade. Shes just such a unique and beautiful ship and thats why the SS France and Norway are my favorite. And another ship that I thought was really beautifully was the 2005 SS Poseidon, although obviously fictional, reminds me of the sovereign class of Royal Carribean
SS FRANCE!! THE MOST BEAUTIFUL OCEAN LINER!!! 🇫🇷 She was perfectly fine as Norway, but I prefer her as she was. I have a model of SS France sitting on my bedside nightstand, right next to my RMS Queen Mary model. My two favorite ocean liners.
The older ocean liner conversions, even though by that time 100% cruise ships, are a class of their own, since they were built as liners and carry the same features. SS Rembrant (former and latterly SS Rotterdam) would definitely have to be on that list too.
Wife and I have sailed on both the Freedom & Explorer of the Seas... and very much appreciated them both. Freedom in fact is my favorite ship of any I've sailed, including the much larger Oasis & Anthem, as well as the Emerald & Ruby Princess.
Artania, in service for Phoenix Reisen, was originally Royal Princess (1984). She and the 1995 Sun Princess are my two favorite ships in terms of exteriors.
Your list is pretty valid and has some ships i didn't know of and are truly quite unique. However, i would personally have added at least on of MSC's older classes to the list. If not for the beautiful Fantasia class that looks like a yaght , I would definitely add the Musica class which is very minimalist and sleek looking!
As the Magic and the Wonder approach 30 years in service, I'm scared to death they will eventually be decommissioned and not replaced with ships that will match their cozy size and classic ocean liner vibe.
The top of my list is/are the Royal Caribbean Radiance Class ships, Brilliance, Radiance, Jewel, and Serenade. Those ships look, to me, like oversized yachts. They have great lines. I like the Millennium ships also, but I am surprised that you did not mention the Celebrity Solstice Class ships. They are pretty in my mind because they have a LOT of glass.
Very good list, but to be honest cruise ships can't match the Golden Adge of ocean liners. I know they are two different type of ships but it's hard to beat the RMS Queen Mary or Queen Elezabeth and the SS Normandie -- "Mostly for her interior," the Normandie's funnels were a tad bit large. Thanks to The Great Big Move for their time, work and posting........
Very good video. I agree 100% with the list. We ( my wife and me) have travel on most of the ships included on the list we have never made a cruise with Disney Cruise line. We have traveled through the Mediterranean in three of them: Brillance of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas and the Norwegian Spirit. Also we have traveled in some of the others mentioned ships but in the Caribbean and New England. We love cruising. Note: We just did the transatlantic cruise this year in the Explorer of the Seas. We love it.
The only nitpick I have with the Disney Wonder and Magic is that their front superstructure seems to be a bit bare and lacking in portholes. If they added some on the deck below the one with portholes, they could've looked like they took direct inspiration from the Lusitania and Mauretania but modernized gracefully.
Thank you for this video. I know you focused on the larger mainstream cruise lines which excluded the luxury and ultra luxury lines that have classy, smaller occupancy ships. Even if 4 of the Oceania and the 4 Azamara ships are identical and older, they're well maintained, classy, comfortable and look great in their white (Oceania) and black (Azamara) colors. Viking ships are elegant and then you have the high end Silversea, Seabourn and Regent ships that have their own good looks. Maybe you can do a mini feature about these some day.
Just cruised to Alaska on the beautiful Brilliance of the Seas. The interior is classy but still modern with a huge amount of glass for outward viewing (unlike the larger floating malls). Weve also sailed on its sister Jewel OTS. This is our favorite class of ship.
The Celebrity Edge Class is pretty if you ignore the "Magic Carpet". But I will say I love that bow on those ships just the same . I am not sure about your number one pick but you make good points
@@TheGreatBigMove it makes that hydrodynamic bow work in ways it doesn't on the Prima. I have a photo from the front at night and it looks very graceful and artistic almost . Celebrity has on the whole the prettiest ships
I was hoping to see the Cunard QM2 as #1 as I'm not a Disney fan but the thier ships fit the classic liner s heme. Your # 2 and 3 were right on. We have sailed Celebrity Infinity and Summit, and I love those girls. We will be on Brilliance next year, and I have high expectations after her refit in 2022.
Well done.. I think you hit the nail on the head on most. I might have switched out a couple... Like I love the Marella Discovery 1/2 (old Splendor and Legend of the Seas,) and the Volendam/Zaandam...And while I get your love for Millennium, (I have sailed on the Constellation, and I do love those ships, but their sterns, well, maybe a bit more detail on them would have been nice.. Great call on Aurora and Norwegian Spirit. RCI does make the nicest big ships, I can even find a spot in my heart for the Oasis Class, thought they aren't my favorite.. Freedom class is very nice, almost a bit nicer than Voyager, (the extra length gives them a slight better profile...I might have included some of the older ones: Amera, Artania, Balmoral, and maybe one of the old R ships... Oceania cruises/Azamara, (but these may fall out of your parameter of "major cruise lines.. Over all though very well chosen..And as I remember, you were pretty spot on on the ugly ones too...;-)
I did consider Legend of the Seas. But I think Voyager/Explorer are better looking. If Explorer had the length of Freedom, she would possibly be the most attractive large cruise ship.
@@TheGreatBigMove I’ve not been on any Voyager class, but I do love the Indy. And I can’t argue that up till the icon, RCI has made probably the nicest big ships. When you see a Voyager ship alone they still look massive. Maybe they’ll stretch them. It did wonders for Song Of Norway and Nordic Prince 😎👍🏻
I remember going aboard the explorer of the seas for an Alaska cruise and she was one of my favorite cruise ships I’ve ever been on (next to Carnival Panorama) she was a very pretty ship and I did enjoy her a lot
I think you should have included the oasis and icon class cruise ships of the royal Caribbean cruise fleet. But all of the ships you listed I do agree with
Love the whole Voyager class, but in my opinion, I would put Navigator and Mariner above the rest of the class. I think the glass balconies make them look a bit better.
Disney magic was our very first cruise ship we were on . I think she set the bar for me. I said I was only doing one cruise. Well been on 5 ships since. I have a beautiful picture of her on the wall I took at castaway cay . I do think the princess ships look nice and I like the artwork on NCL
I was expecting Amadea and Queen Victoria to be included. Although now no longer serving and hence outside the scope of this video Fred Olsen's Boudicca and Black Watch were classics.
You may have forgot to include MSC Seaside. With its glass-bottomed catwalk, expansive outdoor spaces, and sleek design, the MSC Seaside is a beautiful ship that offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy the ocean views.
I worked on the Queen Mary 2 and think it is a gorgeous looking ship and should be on this list. It too was built as a true ocean liner as opposed to a cruise ship. Thought it is a huge ship, it doesnt have stupid water slides and all that other stuff. It looks elegant while also looking modern. It has a large powerful bow for cutting through the waves of oceans.
I was holding my breath wondering if you were going to mention Disney. Our first cruise in 2002 was on the Disney Wonder. Their exterior is by far the most beautiful of all.
Extremely dark midnight in a coal mine blue. :-) Believe the proper name for it is "Nieuw Amsterdam Blue." Having been on Eurodam, I was going to pop in and say the HAL ships are freakishly dark blue, not black. And so are the Disney ships. Official name for their color is Monica Blue, and it's described as 87% black and 13% blue. Black at a glance, but looks blue when the light is right.
I didn't consider QM2 for this list, since I included her in one of my ocean liner list videos. Maybe I should have called that out at the start of this video.
Surprised you didn't mention Royal Caribbean's Radiance class ships. They're older and I guess the Voyager and Freedom classes followed the same traditions but I think they really got it right with the Radiance class.
Personally i think the oasis class was worthy of a mention, ik that they are massive ships but i think royal caribbean has done an amazing job with making them look good especially against other ships that are near or larger (icon)
Had you picked any ship other than Disney Magic (or Wonder) as the #1 I would have taken a great issue with your video. Still not sure about a few of your choices, I would have picked the Disney Dream or Fantasy over the Carnival ship or Freedom of the Seas - but thats about the only nit pick I have with your choices.
No doubt. I've sailed on both, and when we've been in port next to any other cruise ship, I always look at them and go 'what a stunning ship' and it makes whatever ship we are next to look like a floating brick, or resort. It will be a sad day when those two ships are retired - though they are holding up well, I was on the Magic last year, and yeah - there was a few things that made you realize its a ship built in the late 90s, it certainly has been well maintained and the design has been timeless.
Im out, im still find pretty much of the moder cruisers designs, as a concept. They look good to me, specially those bows with that prism bend in the upper part. Maybe i lack sometimg about taste.
No, you don't. It's a matter of preference. For those who prefer traditional ships, such features might be a turnoff. For me, I prefer traditional but I try to keep an open mind.
You forgot the MS Europa and MS Europa 2, ranked as the best cruise ships in the world every year, they look like mega yachts, and they are now owned by TUI cruises , a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean.
Haha! Love your Icon of the Seas joke upon announcing #1. Says it all. SUMMARY: Oceanliners look better, more elegant than cruise ships because they don't have any (or hardly any) balconies that make many look like hotels on barges. End of story.

I didn't consider QM2 for this list. Maybe I should have mentioned that at the beginning.
QM2, best looking but not a "cruise ship," apparently the only "ocean liner" in the world. It's all about seaworthiness they tell me!
She's an liner not a cruise ship. BIG DIFFERENCE.

My list was Viking and Disney. Whenever I see an RCL ship they look warn out.
nailed it
U FORGOT NAVIGATOR OF THE SEAS
Haha! Love your Icon of the Seas joke upon announcing #1. Says it all.
SUMMARY: Oceanliners look better, more elegant than cruise ships because they don't have any (or hardly any) balconies that make many look like hotels on barges. End of story.
