Watch Marcel Witte. He does the most incredible paintings of animals and, whilst I don't think he does tutorials, in his time-lapse videos you can see the fur painting process up close. Even if it doesn't help you, the paintings are genuinely breathtaking.
I really appreciate that you don't just use white models when you make tutorials on human features, I've seen so many videos on how to do skin/hair/eyes/noses/etc that don't include any kind of diversity on tones/textures/shapes aside from white features.
jj conr it's literally just a question of preference though. I'm from the south meaning we're all pretty damn white. I just tend to prefer the facial features of darker people.
Yes!!!!! As a curly/frizzy haired artist, I am so glad you were so diverse and comprehensive. Your videos are always so great and I don't think I have ever seen a hair tutorial that wasn't just smooth straight hair. Thank you!!!
These are also kinda really good tips for digital art as well...Love your vids, both these kinda more serious tutorial ones and the "sillier" ones with your Hoodie character! Super helpful while still entertaining. :)
I totally agree! Even if you're just masking things and putting them in front of a different background, too often people don't repair the hair edges afterwards. So the emphasis on the edge was great! Also, when I started, I felt like there was no way of getting the edges better instead of freely painting over myself. The details will be too small to look artificial, but without them it does not look real. So just try it and get better. ^-^
After this series, could u do a introduction to oils. Like sorta a beginner tutorial on what we ABSOLUTELY need. also, my hair attempt actually looks like hair now :D TYTYTY
I’m so glad you taught how to do curly hair like mine and other types as well bc most painters got for straight or wavy but as a very much so beginner that can’t draw a stick figure I would like to learn how to paint a variety of everything so thank youuu👏💗👌🙏
What the fruck?! When my friend said you were good, I didn't think she meant this freaking amazing!!! Jeez I was not expecting this kind of awesome art...
You are one of the very few artists i know of who shows different skin tones, hair types, and facial features. Thank you so much it is so refreshing to see and so helpful!
I just want to say thank you sooo much for this video because whatever medium I am using, hair always stresses me out, and I don't have the patience to every little strand like some artists do. In this video, you helped me realize that you don't need to make every little strand, i can't really explain it but the final turnout was so close to the original on all the paintings that it gave me hope :D
Same here, some years ago a friend (a very good artist called Richard Rennie) gave me some of his old acrylics and water paints and that is what i started on. But i do believe that the time has come for me to move on to oils. One of the main reasons is that oil seems to have a much longer work-time than acrylic, even after adding retarder fluid.
I've heard that you can also use a airbrush filled with water to lightly mist areas of acrylic paint that you want to stay wet for a wet on wet technique. for individual strokes a small amount of water mixed with the paint will help with viscosity.
My skills are some where in the middle. I never thought to start with a dark base. I usually curve the colors, leaving space to curve in the next color.
This was the fourth, and by far the best, video on painting hair I watched on UA-cam. I love the contrast of the "Do's and Don'ts", it makes the "Do's" look even better. Very well done, thank you!
I love how with the wavy one you showed how to quickly recover. That is super important for me as someone who is wanting to paint a self portrait but is really nervous about getting my curly hair wrong.
ITS LIKE YOU READ MY MIND! Im gonna paint my mom an abstract picture. and add a lil bit of her head into it but i didnt know how to draw her hair. AND HERE YOU COME WITH THIS TUTORIAL THAT SHOWS EXACTLY HOW TO DO HER HAIR. BLESS
I really appreciate this series, it is more helpful than any tutorial I've ever seen, so thank you a lot for sharing your knowledge and skills with us.💕
I am using your tutorials to get the info into my brain twenty minutes before falling asleep, and I am L♥vin it!! I have used this technique for learning my entire life. Thank you for being so precise with your wording. I can leave the video running while I work on my own art but not the same type. This has helped my aging mind to wrap around key points without getting my Nana Brain strained.
Thank you for including multiple hair types. I struggle so much with curly and kinky hair, and it sucks because it's so pretty but I never quite knew where to start with painting it
I used to paint a lot when I was younger, but stopped when I didn't find the time and thought I wasn't good enough. Now I wanna start again and this video really really helps. Thanks a lot! I'm gonna check out more of your videos for sure! ♡
I'm really glad you said you can do hair however you want. Many artists forget that some may have different styles or may not be at the same level as them. When I saw this video I was kinda worried you'd get hate for that, but the fact you said that really made me happy :)
Yay! Now I know how to draw my own hair! Thank you!. But seriously, in hair tutorials you never see the fluffy, messy, yarn hair type (my friends call it the wire type), you usually just get the straight, wavy or curly hair.
i really enjoy your vids like these, becsuse i can watch you draw AND get tips from it. Also, did hoodie do the dont side? because im starting to see a little progression;)
You always calm me, Robin. I was on the verge of a panic attack and couldn't sleep but your voice is so soothing and motherly that within seconds my breathing was calmed.
Oh my goodness gosh, thank you SO much!! It is SO hard to find hair tutorials (Or at least for me) where it shows and explains in a way that's easily understood and this is so incredibly useful already. I literally just got more painting supplies today and yesterday to practice more and this is seriously going to be so very helpful. THANK YOU
Sometimes when using acrylics, I will keep a small spritzer bottle (think a cosmetic bottle) and I might very lightly wet the canvas periodically to keep the paint usable to blend
I painted for the first time with acrylics to do my art portfolio and I had no clue how to paint skin, hair, clothes and how to put depth and shadows into the painting. But it turned out amazing for my first time. And I saw this video AFTER I handed in my portfolio and I did exactly what you told on the do's. And it was all self taught too
All these tutorials are coming at the perfect time! I'm going to get properly into oil painting this summer and these are golden nuggets of info and skill!!!!
Wow. Just, wow. I feel like my eyes have just opened for the first time. I'm a budding artist and I haven't really found my art style yet and I've been thinking about trying painting but wasn't really quite sure because no matter how many videos I watched about how to properly paint I just couldn't but this video really helped me and kinda gave an extra boost of motivation. This was so helpful love your videos ❤️
Oh my god this was so helpful! Today I had an art assignment and it included curly hair, so this video was perfect! Thank you for uploading videos like this, I love your DOs & DONTs. Amazing as always ♥
Oh, my Gosh! I'm so lucky I've found your channel, there are many tips I've learned from you. I'm working on my first portrait (not exactly using a printed reference but a mirror) and I'm somehow self-taught in painting. I love you channel and your vibes!
i would so appreciate a kind of series thing where you do the very very basics of oils where you explain it like you're talking to a 2 year old and a basics and an intermediates and an experts etc. adore these type of vids, and any other vids from robin tbh
Wow!! This tutorial was super helpful. I've always thought that really good painters like you would spend hours on hours painting their hair (and of course, some do), but I never knew it was this easy! I've actually always been too scared to try and paint hair because it looks so difficult and I was scared I would mess up, but you taught me a lot and I appreciate it! Thanks Robin! (And hoodie lol)

I notice you did all acrylic for the don’t side. Are you not able to use all acrylic and paint realistic hair? Would I need to add another medium to it?

Cool! Peoples of the internet, let me know if this is something a lot of you would like to see, or if there's anything else I can help with!
I think you could also use the frizzy hair tutorial in this video to paint pretty realistic fur or what do you think?
fur is basically the same as straight hair, just shorter and in chunks
I really appreciate that you don't just use white models when you make tutorials on human features, I've seen so many videos on how to do skin/hair/eyes/noses/etc that don't include any kind of diversity on tones/textures/shapes aside from white features.
Thanks Ziggi :)
Ziggi Willpower especially that so many things that are interesting enough to paint are super non-white
