@Ignacio Bentley I really appreciate your reply. I got to the site thru google and Im in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Awe thanks, so glad you think so!! I actually have a few more fur-related tutorials in the works right now, starting off with how to paint white and black fur 😊
I paint in acrylics and up until recently I had only done still life's and landscapes. My friends and family all found it strange that I don't do animals because I'm a life long animal lover even working hands on in the animal industry for many years. My sister finally got me to agree to paint her dog. After watching countless videos on painting fur, and feeling like giving up, I found yours. Your tutorial was very well explained and demonstrated, without being intimidating or overwhelming. I had the "lightbulb" moment, and I FINALLY, was able to produce a painting that I felt good about. Thank you so much!!
Beautiful, thank you! I can't imagine how much practice this will take to learn but it's a fun challenge to try for any animal lover. Grateful for such pro advice.
This is THE BEST fur painting tutorial on UA-cam! Very detailed step by step, amazing! I wish I could hit the like button a thousand times!! Thanks a lot for sharing.
I am fairly new to acrylics and tried painting a fox, which was so frustrating to do. So glad I found this tutorial! I sure will try it with more of a plan next time I paint fur! Thank you!!
Good morning, I have watched your videos which are incredibly helpful for someone like myself learning how to paint fur in its realistic tones and shapes, I was wondering because I use acrylic paint what glaze you would recommend, or if it is needed with acrylic? Thank you
You list your favorite brushes with an Amazon link but what is the rake brush brand and size that you use in this video? You say, "I'm using a large-ish brush" but that's all I got. Thank you very much! You are tremendously talented! I just want to paint my little Maltese dog. 😊
Great demo. Thanks for offering these demo's. I wish, however, that you would increase the volume on your speaker. I have to strain to hear what you say. It seems to be the same on all your demo's.
This is amazing I’m painting a sloth for my friends birthday and this is perfect and the perfect colors that I need for the sloth you need to keep this up your an amazing talented artist and you should have way more views and followers then you do
So realistic and amazing! I am struggling to paint hair in portraits, I am sure this will help me a lot! Please tell me know which Rigger brush you used for painting individual hairs at the end of the video ? I am waiting for your tutorial on Glazing, yours looks so beautiful. Thanks
Thank you so much 😀 My favorite rigger/liner brush is from the brand Princeton, specifically from the Aspen line. Holds a really beautiful and crisp line :)
wonderful tutorial. I only wish you'd provided shots of the particular brushes you used, as you did with the bottle of liquin. anyway, thank you very much. I'm doing a picture involving wild hyenas with long, flowing manes, and the procedure you demonstrated looks incredibly useful.
For a black and white border collie, would you use black or would you mix colors to get a deeper black? Also: do you treat the white areas as the darker areas, i.e., in three tones or just mid and light? Thanks a lot!
I have a tendency to avoid black paint entirely for the most part, even when painting actual black fur. In some cases when I do use black, it’s mixed in heavily with other colours (usually burnt umber, Prussian blue and manganese violet). If the fur is looking more brown than black in the later steps, I’ll go in with a glaze and black paint to darken it up. I typically use the “three tones” philosophy for all fur, you just have to adjust the ratio of each. White fur will have less of the darkest tone, and dark fur will have less of the lightest tone. Hope that helps!
When you glaze, are you going over wet oil paint or are you letting it sit some before glazing? I usually mix linseed oil into my paints so I was curious.
Aloha from Hawaii Danielle. First time that I have watched a video of yours, it was sooo informative, thank you. At the beginning of your videos could you possibly just show the brush(s) that you are using. I think that the type of brushes used are so important. I subscribed!
Glad you enjoyed it!! I was using what is called a “ridge brush” at the beginning, but to be honest any brush type works at this stage. I almost never use that particular brush anymore, in the early phases it doesn’t matter very much!
@@DanielleTrudeauStudios aloha Danielle, Thank you for responding to me so quickly. I do a lot of dog portraits, especially to help earn money for our Humane Society. I didn't know about a ridge brush, our local art store is not very well stocked. So, the early stages if the hair i can see you probably could use about any kind of brush, but it seems like the ridge brush would be invaluable for the later layers. I remember watching your video, that you relied heavily on Liquin, which i also like very much. I'm going to have to watch your video carefully several more times. Thank you, Carolyn
Very great technique, love your work, I would like to know what brushes are you using. Could we see the brushes before you start painting. I'm a beginner to paint fur. I subscribed.

I'm making an 8 foot tall Big Foot for a birthday present. I have three cans of spray paint ... Black, dark brown and Light brown. I'm thinking of using a Batik technique. Trying to layer colors. Just needs to look good from 30 feet away!!! Any ideas?
Thank you for this tutorial! I'm struggling to get back into doing artwork on a regular basis and your videos are inspiring to me :) I also appreciate the background music...Hey, I was wondering specifically which brushes you used in this tutorial. Thanks!
I use an assortment, I rarely stick to the same brushes! Some are incredibly cheap too, it’s much more important to pay attention to the techniques rather than the brushes 😊😊
You totally could! As long as you work with acrylics first and then oils, it should work just fine. Although there are mediums that work with acrylics that allow you to glaze as well
Hi Danielle. I have a question re glazing. If that dries faster than the layers underneath, will that not cause an issue? I’m thinking fat over lean or does the glazing medium act as the “fat?”
Good question! In this case, the glazing medium acts largely as the fat in the equation. I personally don’t have much experience with glazing over thick impasto layers, but if I did I would ensure that the layer is mostly dry to ensure that there aren’t any adverse effects.

Blending oils is easy, let me sub now and can you produce a vid on blending acrylics ?
Liquin is actually used to speed up drying time in paint. I’ve never seen it used as a glaze

This piece probably took a few hours, maybe 3 at max.
When you glaze, are you going over wet oil paint or are you letting it sit some before glazing? I usually mix linseed oil into my paints so I was curious.
You definitely want to let it dry completely first! If you don’t you’ll end up lifting up and muddying the paint
