Hey Mentour. I’ve watched your videos now and again and recently subscribed to you. Love your videos and I take all of your advice seriously. I’m going through CPLEMIR training at the moment and thinking a lot about my employability, so please indulge me a little. Here’s my problem with the personality tests used for interview processes: they’re not reliable enough to analyse individuals. The research shows that, CLEARLY. These tests were originally designed for research purposes and can in no way accurately map someone’s personality. I say this because I studied this both in psychology and sports psychology at university. Yet of course, these personality tests are highly attractive to airlines. A company changes around a little bit the 4, 16, or 32 trait tests and then claim it as their own, saying that they’ve specifically tailored it to accurately tell you what a candidate is really like. Therefore, despite all the research that shows that this is a rather unjust and inaccurate practice, its use has been on a steady increase not just by airlines, but also by flight schools and industries outside aviation. Oxford Aviation for instance, do regularly fail potential students purely because of their personality test results, even though they excel in all other areas of the psychometric tests, sim ride, group exercises, and interview. With that in mind, why should we not try to tailor our answers to what we think the airline wants, assuming that we thoroughly research the airline, the type of people employed there, and the personality tests used? What’s your personal opinion on the matter? Either way, I do consider very carefully EVERYTHING you and other people more experienced than myself have to say. You all know way more than I do after all. Thanks very much for the videos

Thank you very much for you insight into the industry. I am a new private pilot from Canada about to start the CPL soon. Here we need over 3000 hours to get anywhere close to a jet so I am far away from a jet cockpit. I am interested in learning more about hand flying the 737. More specifically how often do you get to disconnect the autopilot and flight director and fly raw data. I have heard that many airlines turn on the autopilot shortly after rotation and disconnect it during short final. If that is the case then how do you keep your hands and feet sharp?
I fly an E175 in the US, but I’d say most handfly up to 10-15,000 ft and disconnect anywhere from minimums to around 1500 ft. You wouldn’t turn off the FD unless you were on a visual approach and were using it for guidance. We leave the auto throttle on all the time unless it’s gusty and it can’t keep up.
I would like to learn what you are thinking about psychology test. I am an ab initio now and in the process of DLR-2. As I observed, the questions such as 38*38 or 2/17 are asked by psychologs in the interviews. What do you think about this question type and what may be the best answer for such kind of questions?
First of all a great very informative channel you have! Secondly, I've been wondering about personality types suited for pilots. Would you consider yourself and your collagues in the business extroverts? Being strongly introverted myself I am a bit terrified by these group exercises or social interaction tests. I feel like my personality is the biggest reason to fail while the love and interest into aviation is there I just feel that most companies always want very extroverted people instead of the "lonewolfs". Anyone else have experience or tips on this? Cannot really lie to them about your own personality...
+antimonni Hi! I have done a video about "Pilot personalities" as well. Check that out as well as my "motivational" videos. They should all help. Good luck and believe in yourself!

First of all, Thanks for the great videos :) Second, What is the best time of the year to send job applications? Fall, just before summer perhaps? Thanks in advance
Hi Mentour, Before you can go to the airline interview you need to be selected. But how do they select someone? Do they look to the results of your ATPL theory exams? Or something completely different?
Incredible video ! I wish it was out before I did mine haha Thank you. I have one technical question for you. Could you explain how exactly you plan your descents on the B737 if you want to do them without using VNAV ? Also what mode would you use ? LVL CHG / VS ? Keep up the good work !
Fre4Kz The way I was taught during my MCC/JOC was to use LVL CHG mot of the time. Of course descending with LVL CHG will cause a quite rapid descent with A/T engaged as thrust will be reduced to idle. So if we wanted a slower descent we would use V/S combined with MCP SPD. Could be that I am not totally right, but Petter can correct me :)
Fre4Kz VNAV is the preffered method for descends and descend planning on the 737, V/S is mostly used to comply with vertical speed restriction by ATC or at the final inbound turn for the ILS, to achieve perfect CDA on to the glideslope. LVL CHG is good for all the other situations (lets say you get a direct or a heading which ruins your vnav profile or for profile corrections) I'm not a real 737 pilot so Petter can correct me I guess.

Hello, thank you for each video you post, are useful. I have a question I hope you will ask, what level of english is nedded to start ( to pass the selection) the ATPL course? Thanks
Dear Mentour Pilot, Great video. To be honest, the large "Airline Corporations" want someone who will follow government regulations perfectly. I think I would do well on certain parts of the test, and not as well on other parts of the tests you describe. I have good visual-spatial skills, but I am 33 years old, and the major "Airline Corporations" want to recruit very young people and retain them. I think I may be unemployable in this area due to my age. Nowadays, with new technology, the airplanes almost, pretty much, for the most part, fly themselves. Airline pilots nowadays have to act more like "Politicians", "Code-Enforcers", and "Attorneys At Law" in order to navigate the maze of massive government bureaucracy.
What if you don't have an engineering background or aren't really good in maths ? Will it hinder you from getting an airline interview? Really insightful video though!
great! thanks for the post. I'm wondering if you're a Capt. or FO ? and what type do you fly. and your age thanks for the great advice ! very easy to understand you
Hello - this video was very informative. However, I have a question; my abstract mathematic skills are slightly wonky for some reason, but I do pretty well at applied mathematics. I have looked at a few aptitude tests online, where some are applied mathematics and others just pure abstract. Based on your experience, what type of mathematics are usually recommended to become and airline pilot. Is there any high-level stuff like calculus? Cheers.
Adrien Rassat from what I’ve heard most is just basic operations (add, multiply, etc.) Also I don’t know where you are but in Canada many schools will accept you with good marks in college preparation classes. However I am no precessional.
I swear, i went to do one of these tests online and i got 2 answers wrong out of 20 😳 first shot, i'll keep practising, but i hope i'll have the same luck when the time comes hehe
Thanks a lot for replying, you really are helping a lot of people in many ways, thanks for the info although I would have thought the 737 NG. You learn something new every day.
Do women have the same chance at the interview as men? I mean, I read a lot of articles and most of them said this is a good job for MEN etc... so do they make a difference?
Hi Mentour, I have one question for you! I did my MCC/JOC and in the right hand seat I was PF and in the left hand seat I was PM. In an assessment if you are in the right hand seat you are PF only? Thank you very much
You are a captain right? Because I have an interest in becoming a commercial airline pilot for American Airlines (sorry) since I know that airline it would be easy. But my question is do pilots have bachelors degrees and how long does the training take?
What suggest to respond if being asked during a cadet pilot interview that how to solve it if run into problems or disagreements with captains, or how should fo react to captain who does not strictly follow sop during flight? thank you very much!
Hello, Firstly, I want to thank for your answers. I don't response to those answers because I don't want to buzz your phone all the time but you can be sure I appreciate your nice intentions and answers. There are second officers in long haul flight right? Or isn't there any? I checked wikipedia it says something like that but sometimes it can not be trusted. Thank you for your answer in advance.
Adrien Rassat so it's been 2 years, are you a pilot now?
Thanks for the video. i just got in a famous airline :)
Well done 👏
Do you think it's worth to buy for your piloteducation?
Which airline do you work for pls🙏🏻
I don't think you're seeing our comments in the live stream
I swear, i went to do one of these tests online and i got 2 answers wrong out of 20 😳 first shot, i'll keep practising, but i hope i'll have the same luck when the time comes hehe
Did it cost you? If it didnt can you send me the link please?
What do you think the best aircraft currently is to get a type rating in for good job opportunities in the UK and EUROPE
Thanks a lot for replying, you really are helping a lot of people in many ways, thanks for the info although I would have thought the 737 NG. You learn something new every day.
what airline do you work for?
Do women have the same chance at the interview as men? I mean, I read a lot of articles and most of them said this is a good job for MEN etc... so do they make a difference?
Thank you :)
I can also imagine that some airlines nowadays want to push their women quota. So you might have luck
Hi Mentour,
I have one question for you! I did my MCC/JOC and in the right hand seat I was PF and in the left hand seat I was PM. In an assessment if you are in the right hand seat you are PF only? Thank you very much
No
do u teach people to fly
do u know when u qualified pilot and u got all the buttons I'm the capin did u forget them
What's the most pressure come from during the whole process of flight and how to handle it?
You are a captain right? Because I have an interest in becoming a commercial airline pilot for American Airlines (sorry) since I know that airline it would be easy. But my question is do pilots have bachelors degrees and how long does the training take?
I want to become a captain actually
Pilots need to have a bachelors degree and it takes up to 1500hrs to fly commercially and you also need a drivers license to start
What suggest to respond if being asked during a cadet pilot interview that how to solve it if run into problems or disagreements with captains, or how should fo react to captain who does not strictly follow sop during flight? thank you very much!
For Which airline do you fly?
Hello,
Firstly, I want to thank for your answers.
Best regards
They aren’t called second officers they are relief pilots to help the main crew
Hi mentor pilot..
I have just failed in the crm interview. There were two main queations that ı couldnt answer confidently. First one was that when u are a captain in the cockpit if one of the cabin crew inform u that they saw 2 small green snakes in the cabin would u continue or divert and would u inform the passengers about the snakes or would not? what is the correct answer..? and if u are to inform what kind of question would u ask?
You wouldn't tell the passengers as it could cause panic and result in injuries
I would tell the flight attendants to say we are diverting to something that won’t cause panic like a sudden shutdown of the arrival runway
Would you recommend your job to me. Is it fun.
