  • Trying to stay busy and interested in these crazy times!
I figured i could pull out the Champ Lap Steel and give it some TLC.
I enjoy these little projects, and maybe some of you guys do as well!
    Thanks!

I like hearing GE Smiths take on them. He loves them. Definitely cool. I get a heat gun on newer pickups and melt out a ton of wax on mostly strat pickups. I think it gets rid of some of the muffled sound. I recently did it to a 59 set and I think it made all the difference. It also makes them microphonic in a good way.

    Esquires, Broadcasters and Telecasters 1950-1954
The serial numbering for these three models can be found on the bridge plate and lasted until the beginning of 1954.
Fender then switched to a serial numbering on the neck plate for all models in that year.
    SERIAL NUMBERS PRODUCTION YEAR
    0001 - 0999 1950 - 1952
    1000 - 5300 1952 - 1954

I just acquired serial number 4472. The tuning pegs are toast. What do you recommend for replacing?

I have the same model. On the chrome tail piece is 7261. In the cavity is a slip of paper and written with a pencil is “ Inspected by Gloria, (I don’t recall the month and day) 1954”. Someone on YT told me it was the legendary Gloria Fuentes.

Hi, I'm Laurajane and I'm from New Zealand. I repair guitars and build lap steel guitars. This was really interesting and I learned quite a bit from what you are doing and what you said. Thanks for sharing this. I collect vintage lap steel and pedal steel guitars. I currently have 18 of all different types and manufacturers, from Gibson, Fender, Gretsch rickenbacker and Duesenburg.

There might be penciled in under the tuning tray the initials of the carver. Mine (a 6 string double neck professional console) is a Tadeo Gomez finished April 3rd, '52 and I love it.

The whole tailpiece went into the dip tank and got chromed. The rear just didn’t get any metal polishing. That’s why it looks different than the top. Metal finishing and polishing, before chroming, Is the key to a good finish.

Are these finished in nitro or are they that pearloid type stuff? I heard you say mother of toilet seat but wasn’t sure which part you meanr

Would it be morally correct to take the pickup from a vintage lap steel and put it into a good telecaster instead? Assuming the lap steel would get a very good replacement pickup.

Well , let's just say He is a Guitarist , directly transposing his guitar techniques . You wouldn't expect a Steel or Dobro player to pick up an armpit guitar and play it conventionally either .
