  • Fender’s bright switch…. Some use it, some dont. There is a great tone dynamic there, if the amp is cooking just right, it can give you more!
    Just try it…?!?
    Peace

Sounding tasty as usual, I got my first Fender amp with bright switch recently, a 1967 Bassman head, which is black-panel with drip-edge (transition?). We saw your friend JD Simo here in Portland recently at a clinic he did. Seeing his telecaster up close I couldn't believe how low the strings are - almost touching the frets, yet he plays brilliant slide guitar - amazingly sensitive touch!

Yep kids, Nik's right, the bright switch is very useful, as you can hear by his examples. I've been using a 1963 Super Reverb amp since 1972 (I've had a few others that were made in '65 and '67 but I kept the '63, it's my favorite). So, for those of you that would like to use the bright switch but are finding it a bit too bright, try swapping out the 120pf bright cap for a 50pf or 47pf cap, I did that decades ago and found it's even more useful, especially with a Strat or Tele, a Gibson might be different (I don't know, I don't have one). But that would depend on what speakers you use, I still use the original Jensen C10R's, they have low Wattage output, about 15 or 20 Watts each, and they're already kind of bright (they're on their 4th re-cone now, ha ha). High Watt speakers (a better choice, if you can lift the amp into the car) have more low end, so results will vary, you'd probably like the 120pf cap with EV's. Also most of those bright caps usually have drifted off spec to around 100pf (that difference would probably be hard to tell). Nice video as always, Nik, your playin's great. You've got it goin' on.

I think this is why you, and a lot of people "get" Kingtone pedals. The "Edge" or "Glass" setting on the Blues Power or Duelist can kinda get you the same vibe with the bright switch. Thanks for introducing me to the Blues Power Nik!

The bright switch on my Super reverb is definitely my secret weapon. You’re 100% right that switch is a hidden gem 💎 🎸

Yeah man. My ‘65 Super Reverb has been my main amp for literally my entire life…it belonged to my uncle before I was born and I got it when I started playing at 8 years old. The Bright switch has never been turned off since 1979!😂

Great to see you back Nik throwing those kickass SRV riffs!! I highly agree that there is so much tonal diversity in the flick of this bright switch, I have fiddled a lot with it on my 75 Twin Reverb EQing all the while trying to find that sweet spot. Hope you showcase some Robin Trower tones too someday ;)

Love your videos - I'm always inspired to plug in my Strat right after watching. What string gauges are you using? I've been doing standard 46-10 in E-flat but feel like I need a bigger low E.

Hey, it’s my 1959 Strat and the amplifier is modified for more treble and tighter low end. I don’t know exactly the specifics because I dont do the mods.

If you find that you're amp doesn't function well as a pedal platform, turn off the bright cap. You might find it functions a lot better without it
