I’ve always admired the zealous. Even a song written in mockery sounds better than what we have in most churches these days. It actually acknowledges him.
I don't think it's mocking anyone. It really goes out of its way to make everyone in the story relatable and not black-and-white. Judas is the obvious example, but even King Herod can be characterized as a skeptic who is genuinely interested in whether Jesus can really do miracles or not. Simon Zealotes is totally justified in wanting to end the Roman occupation, and he only thinks that it's on Jesus' to-do list because of how insufferably vague Jesus is being about everything.
@@billvolk4236 also because at the time they believed the Messiah would be like a warlord type figure. Jesus’ 99% pacifistic ways (rip fig tree or whatever fruit it was) were not at all what they were anticipating, expecting, or wanting. There’s a bit hinting towards this in Pilate’s song when he mentions that they send him Messiah’s by the sackful.
This remains one of the greratest pieces of cinematography I have ever seen. Ted Neeley's subtle expression change after Simon asks him to go up against Rome is power, and it is acting at its finest. The camera work is stunning.
Later in life I’ve come to appreciate the dance numbers. Kate Capshaw / Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Knowing that the goal was to out-do the first movie, when I saw the elaborate setup… and her singing “Anything Goes” with that gleam in her eye, I just knew it would be awesome. And it was… and then some. JCS though, what memories it brings. It’s not “canon” but what is? I believe Judas was part of the plan all along. He thought he was protecting them from the Romans by handing Jesus over. However motivated, it was what was fated to happen. And thank you Larry Marshall, for putting a forever face on the word “zealot”. I can’t hear the word without picturing those screaming teeth.

There are a couple that are a bit weak, but overall it’s definitely the best version. (Herod is the main one I mean but I don’t think there’s ever been a good Herod tbh)
The man who plays Simon was on the waitress musical tour a couple of years ago I was so happy when I realized it was him when I read the playbill .he sang” take it from an old man and was great.”
All the people calling this song disrespectful to Jesus are probably the exact same kind of "notice me senpai"-type Christians this song is criticizing. It's (rightfully) disrespecting them, not Jesus.
Simon's singer is one of the best in a cast of standouts. That last note is great, especially considered he'd been inevitably dancing for hours at this point for footage...

I like that, like the Bible, this musical does not attempt to be anything more than actors on a big stage. Like the Bible stories the characters are larger than their roles and their performances choreographed and written and rewritten to suit the audience. This is my favorite musical, the best story telling of Jesus without the pretentiousness of being nothing but a good story, as the Roman’s intended.
Both my brother and I were very much into JCS the concept album. Knew all the songs. Our church even hosted a local presentation - from a Unitarian church, with a full cast, rock band, minimal costumes and props. When we first saw the movie trailer on TV with Simon/Larry up close we said oh yeah he’s insane we gotta see this. Also… as manic is this is, they slowed down the music in order to be able to choreograph it - the original concept album is faster but just can’t do it justice the same way.
TO CLEAR UP THE POINT OF THIS SONG: it is poking fun at people who worship jesus looking for what jesus can do for them, when they should be thinking about what the should do for jesus. It is NOT however, making fun of jesus or christians.
It's actually fundamentally breaking down multiple different common "gospel," messages. "Christ you know I love you, did you see our way, I believe in you and God so tell me that I'm saved," is about the fundamental flaw of those who seek their own individual salvation through Christ, when it isn't about individuality at all. We are nothing more than mustard seeds, dropped by the road side. (Mark 4) He who does not hate himself can not be a follower of Christ. (Luke 35) These are both about the necessary dissolution of the ego in order to attain the path. Therefore you get nothing from following Christ, and that is the point. It isn't about YOU. Going further however, they then make it about Jesus, and that is ALSO a mistake. "You get the power, you get the glory." The whole point of the gospel is that NO ONE gets the power or the glory. We are to see no similitude. We have to recognize that since we are all mustard seeds, it is in fact about no one. It is about US. It is about us being equal parts of a greater whole. We must see no similitude between material and God, as we did on the day the tablets were delivered on Mt. Sania. We must therefore realize that since we are created in this image we possess no similitude to these earthly vessels ourselves. It's about all of us, and OUR salvation so that WE can escape.
If you say you are Christian and be mean others, that is not being a Christian. Be kind is being Christian and Being nice and kind and humble that is being a Christian.
NO it really isn't about what should they do for Jesus lol.. *You really think Jesus wants them to only think about what they can do for Him?* Doesn't this sound absurd to you? I wonder how can you try to correct someone about the meaning of this song and proceed to understand it just as incorrect. It's about what you can do for others and first of all for yourself, spiritualy. That's what Jesus wants us to do. Certainly not to worship Him like a God...
Ah, the precursors to the American Shakers. Oh Bretheren ain't you happy? That's an understatement with this dance scene. Great choreography! Great acting! You can tell Judas is jealous... You'll get the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Simon the Zealot is a revolutionary here - everyone mistakes Christ's purpose, nobody gets the metaphysical nature of his identity and purpose - they all fall away, finally, in the Could We Start Again scene - he went alone to his death - and within the Easter weekend holiday, today Saturday April 8, is the day Christ was dead - so feel a little bit sad for somebody today, and then throw it off tomorrow and be happy

Not Judas, but one of his followers!
Simon?
These kids are all in their seventies now.😏
@@cherylwaclawczyk9098 and may God bless them still!
@@ohiyoresident yes Simon
I just watched Ted Neeley singing his song Gesethemane song in 2023, and the man still has it.
Ted Neely was here in Italy and I was fortunate to see him perform. He even met the pope at the Vatican!
Still the best performance ever since.
I just watched Jesus Christ Superstar yesterday for the first time on Easter with my guitar and piano teacher and his wife. The whole movie was great, but this song was a standout for me. Everyone really put 100% into this performance, and it shows. It's truly incredible.
2:47 Look at how Jesus changes his face when Simon tells him "But add a touch of hate at Rome" :o
Great acting in that little bit there.
Because Jesus didn't come to destroy Rome or the lives of men.
Up until that moment he just seemed bemused.
Look at 2:28 when the actor of Jesus breaks characters and cracks up in laughter because of Simons' smile
jesus be like: hehe what a fun musica- wait what
I was crying a little because I saw this movie just after my 12th bday… and I remember it like it was yesterday. Especially seeing so many Black people that look like me and lead roles in the dancing I later became a dancer and now I’m an old Director Theatre person and I was just listening to the original album of JCS. It’s always been a huge part of my mind and heart.
I'm so happy that you got to live through it. I think I remember the commercial for it, hahah. But I was a little younger than you. All I see now is the youth, and health and strength and those jumps and kicks. Haha, but almost once a year a remember this album and movie and then watch all the clips all over again. And I think, man, these guys were doing Benetton ads before Benetton. But back then I guess I figured by 2000 everybody would be cool with everybody...ah well.
BEST Simon…Mr Marshall….the expression and body language..the crazy fire in his eyes…truly the Biblical Simon…..change my mind
People forget the zealots were basically t3rror!sts. This play captures all of the different perspectives the disciples had perfectly.
he scares me he's giving it 1 million %
Why change your mind. That's your opinion. I wish they had done a movie with the original singers. They are the best.
@@danroberts9050 I kinda like some of the original album songs more than the movie version, but the actors in this movie did a phenomenal job.
That's why we can't really compare the two versions, they are both perfect and I love to listen to both of them.
I play the Murray Head Heaven on their minds most of the time, but is he actually better than Carl Anderson?
Hell Nah!
I’ve always admired the zealous.
Even a song written in mockery sounds better than what we have in most churches these days. It actually acknowledges him.
This song wasn't "written in mockery"; but instead, it serves to demonstrate worldly reaction to a Divine phenomenon.
Others at the time also claimed to be the Messiah and were much more rebellious and violent. There’s a bit hinting towards this in Pilate’s song when he mentions that they send him Messiah’s by the sackful.
all of them are amazingly trained dancers, its a pleasure to watch.
This must be how it really happened.
lol
lol
Good lord. I hope so.
🤣🤣🤣
This made me laugh harder than is appropriate. Thanks!
I can’t hear the word without picturing those screaming teeth.
the greatest musical "amen" of all time at the end
The Choreography is Off the Chart 📈 executed by Beautiful Performers.
Neither you Simon, nor the 50,000
Nor Judas, or the Jews
Nor the twelve, or Rome, or the priests or the scribes
Nor Jerusalem itself
Understand what glory is
Understand what power is
Understand at all
Tremendous lyrics. I can hear the song as I read it
Jesus: (nodding and smiling just hoping this day ends quick)
So amazingly good I've probably watched this a thousand times the way that it is crafted the dust the dirt the heat the sweat the lythe bodies crazy hair Simon's herky jerky dancing is absolutely insane along with the vocals and jewisons perfect sweeping and setting up of these scenes it's just absolutely off the scale.. Christ's otherworldly power has energized every cell in every body in this scene. Christ is like an oracle doing to these people what he did to the world
Lythe bodies is a good way to put it. These people were bursting with youth and talent!
The greatest musical of all time, and a true icon of the 1970s. The recent re-do fell significantly short of this landmark film.
The entire film blows away every broadway performance. Obviously Carl Anderson is incredible, and Neely is great, but this scene stands out as probably the best.
There are a couple that are a bit weak, but overall it’s definitely the best version.
(Herod is the main one I mean but I don’t think there’s ever been a good Herod tbh)
@@DreadBirateHave you ever heard Angry Anderson's version from the 1992 Australian cast? I don't know if it's better but it's at least different.
@@DreadBirate
Yeah right🙄
The man who plays Simon was on the waitress musical tour a couple of years ago I was so happy when I realized it was him when I read the playbill .he sang” take it from an old man and was great.”
ADR!
Larry Marshall 💯🎶✨️
love the choreography in this classic
Same here!
It is magnificent!
I still get chills watching this…the performance is so passionate
Amen. Fifty years later and this musical still moves me.
!!! 50 YEARS !!! I remember watching this movie in the cinema when I was a kid back in 1979. I didn't like the movie. It was simply to soon to love all that show, all those wonderful actors and singers and dancers. I wish I had been there with all of them!
Love how they are portrayed as frantic, manical.
Them talking about adding a drop of hate to multiply his power.
Its the perfect definition of a zealot. Jesus looking at Judas who looks away in distaste at the rabble.
Poor poor Judas.
exactly
This choreography really captured the essence of the scene. Probably one of the best of all time.
I love the way this was filmed, and the dancing seems so strong.
Simon is one of my favorite disciples, but the female dancers just broke 💔 my heart.
Love you girl, where have you been.
Thanks for the like. I don't get many, so I remember them all.

I posted this earlier. Ted Neely married the dark haired dancer.😍
Those hippie dancers really are mesmerazing
The talent of the actors, the direction, and the sensitivity toward the Gospel is so awesome here........
You can see Ted’s wife Leyanne - in the brown outfit / brown bikini top - long brown hair. It’s where they met! Amazing he is still playing Jesus on stage!
The actor playing Simon was FANTASTIC in this scene. Exactly the spirit of meant to be dis[played. And I love how at the beginning, Jesus is simply amused at h is over-the-top musings.
what a clip, you can tell the passion of the dancer and the singer, theres nothing more to say that this is an stellar achivement of what a great dancers great singer and great musicians can achieve
The bass in this song is lit
When Simon goes into: "There must be fifty thousand . . ." It's not a complex bass part, but it is so on point and groovy/funky.
One of the most electrifying scenes in movie history.
have to agree
I’m 58 and saw the movie in the theater when it first came out. We had the soundtrack album and my sister and I would act the whole thing out all the time. We saw the play when Ted and Carl were on tour I believe in the 90’s- epic! It’s one of my favorite movies and I watched it with my kids every year from the time the were little. They are in their 20’s now and they still love and appreciate it! Love this scene and song!!
I love this movie. The use of locations in it is amazing.
He is very zealous. This is one of the best scenes and performances
Larry Marshall did that dance as fast as he did because he thought the faster I do this the quicker I can get out of the desert sun! He brought so much energy to this song it’s kind of unbelievable
I remember this was one of my Mother's favourite albums... Thanks the memories.
best directed sequence in any musical
Secondo me, una delle sequenze più belle e originali di questa Straordinaria Opera Rock.
Concordo, e' splendida, la mia preferita.
NOBODY IN THE DANCE WORLD HAS BEEN ABLE TO RECREATE THIS MASTERPIECE💞👍💯...Larry Marshall is still a great vocalist as well🎶💯 Ted Neeley is still married to the long haired brunette dancer with the purplish halter top.💞
Leeyan Granger is the lady’s name ;)

This part of the movie in 1974 wanted me to be a dancer in movies or musicals. But it never happend unfortunately, but when I watch it now, I get the same vibe with 60 as I got back then. Amazing!!! Choregraphy, so ever top!
Perfect vocals and choreography. Love it
I was fortunate to see the movie Easter Sunday. I saw it when I was a teenager. But this time Ted Neely and Yvonne and Larry (Simon) and Kurt (Annas) were there in person watching it with us.
Hallelujah!
How Rich musicaly we were once upon a time , so much talent .

1:20 my most fav moment!👍 Simon's just incredible in his devotion!😅
@@kwloy that's what i said: in essay format
If you say you are Christian and be mean others, that is not being a Christian. Be kind is being Christian and Being nice and kind and humble that is being a Christian.
NO it really isn't about what should they do for Jesus lol..
*You really think Jesus wants them to only think about what they can do for Him?*
Doesn't this sound absurd to you?
I wonder how can you try to correct someone about the meaning of this song and proceed to understand it just as incorrect.
It's about what you can do for others and first of all for yourself, spiritualy.
That's what Jesus wants us to do.
Certainly not to worship Him like a God...
This clip is better than 99% of the music videos on UA-cam.
Me encanta la cara de "jesucristo " cuando dice Simon " Add a touch of hate at Rome " Eso es la esencia de Cristianismo
This song reveals who the true athletic dancers are.
It was about 110 degrees in the desert the day they shot this.

Love the way this song undermines its theme and goes all kinds of wrong. A salutary lesson to many such, even today.
Ah, the precursors to the American Shakers. Oh Bretheren ain't you happy? That's an understatement with this dance scene. Great choreography! Great acting! You can tell Judas is jealous...

The acting in this film is impeccable
likewise the acting from the moon landing..oh wait
I was only 13 years old when i first heard this judas song way back in 1973. At boarding school from far away from Joburg.
