FILM DESCRIPTION:
Adapted from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Broadway rock opera, "Jesus Christ Superstar" recounts the last days of Jesus Christ (Ted Neeley) from the perspective of Judas Iscariot (Carl Anderson), his betrayer. As Jesus' following increases, Judas begins to worry that Jesus is falling for his own hype, forgetting the principles of his teachings and growing too close to the prostitute Mary Magdalene (Yvonne Elliman). After Jesus has an outburst in a temple, Judas turns on him.

The staging and costumes are perfect. This film is so freaking good!
I think it's the most underrated movie musical in history. Freakin brilliant!!!!
The best. I'm a fire breathing atheist but this movie is my bible. :)
Norman Jewison, the director, has talked about how when they were in the casting phase and were looking for the person to place Judas, they had auditioned 4 or 5 other men before Carl Anderson came along. He loved Carl's audition. He was worried though that if he cast Carl as Judas, it would be depicting white people as the Savior, and black people as the betrayers, since Ted Neely, who plays Jesus, is white. And Carl Anderson, who plays Judas, is black. So he was reluctant to cast Carl. But he ultimately came to the conclusion that he would not be able to live with himself if he did not cast Carl Anderson to play Judas because Carl gave the best audition out of everyone and was the best person to play Judas. So that it was he did. I am so glad he did, because Carl Anderson gave the best version of Judas in JCS history.
I can see that concern. The answer, truly, is just listen to the man sing. The role of Judas clearly had the best songs and the power and emotion in Carl's voice made him the right choice.
❤❤❤❤❤❤
I get his concern, but I’m glad he decided to do it. Carl did great.
Truly the correct decision
Stunning performance
Thanks!
Judas coming down hanging on the star (or cross?) Will forever be iconic (iconic voice too)
Absolutely!
It's the cross.
It’s the Star.
ABSOLUTELY
The camera at 1:50 is easily one of the best parts of this scene. It captures how Judas is angry at Jesus all while giving a killer performance. Props to Carl Anderson
Yup. He’s the OG
I'm just mesmerized by how high-quality that shot is! It looks like it could've been filmed today
I know, I love that part. the emotion
A great shot of Carl Douglas as the camera pans around his face. Notice he never looks at the camera the whole time. A great talented man. Miss you Carl❤🌹
His performance has been severely underrated. He has anger as Judas, but his eyes always project something else. Sadness, disillusionment, regret, love.
I had the privilege of meeting Carl Anderson on his last tour in this role (shortly before he died). Long live. We miss you, Mr Anderson.
I have always wished I'd seen this in the cinema. My Father did so in the early seventies. He said that when it came to this number, the atmosphere in the theatre was electric. Hairs on the back of your neck stuff - the spirit of Judas descending on a cross, suspended from a crane. Carl Anderson is magnificent here. Should have won the Oscar, in my opinion.
Thank you I said the same thing. The academy didn't bother to nominate him or any of the songs.
Yep. I saw it when it came out. I bought the 8-track. Knew every word. It was electric. Really brought it to present day at that time. Preachers had a problem with not showing the resurrection and Ascension
Antisemitic academy.@@gwenfluker3436
Carl was the best Judas... his voice is amazing. The original movie cast was the BEST. I have seen it on stage many times... the movie cast was still the best. 💝
As regards to audio recording - IMHO the best was the original 1970 album with Ian Gillan - Jesus Christ , Murray Head - Judas , Yvonne Elliman - Mary Magdalene , Victor Brox - Caiaphas, Barry Dennen - Pontius Pilate ,
John Gustafson - Simon Zealotes , Paul Davis - Peter and Mike d'Abo - King Herod . Still listening from time to time since it was released.

Totally. His voice and delivery are perfect. So many nuances you pick up when you watch it many times. He embodied the character like no one else since has. He owns this role. The OG 🙏🏼💕
God bless Carl and Ted for being two of the greatest vocalists ever. Their music lives on!
Every person has something to teach you. Or you are screwed?

So true
Fantastic performances. Maestros
I may be wrong but didn't Ian Gillan.of Deep Purple fill in here & there on the vocals for Christ?
Carl Anderson gives one of the all time great performance in a movie and/or play in his role as Judas Iscariot, and so did Mr. Neely as Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ Superstar is my favorite Easter movie. Comments from the beautiful, tranquil Islands of The Bahamas 🏝️🌅🏖️🇧🇸
Love it too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Carl is the best singer at all from the original recording and the movie! Absolute master of rhythm, accents, everything!
I totally agree from Wisconsin, USA
Carl Anderson is great
Just listen. That's all.....
He is the only Judas, played better than anyone before or after
Him and Tim Minchin are both my favorites
I agree
Yes!!!!!
100% Correct!
I saw this movie in the theaters with my parents. I was just a kid but it left a lasting impression on me. No other actor portraying Judas can match this performance. It still gives me chills.
We did this when I was in junior high in 1977 with an all blind cast. I played Judas. We also did "Grease". I was Danny in that.
AWESOME! You must have a wonderful voice to be given the part of Judas.
were you in a special needs school?
Carl Anderson reminds me of Philip Bailey of EWF for some reason..
@@pjsretrogamesmusicandwrass5795 oh hell no
😂😂😂😂... Just the look but definitely not the sound...
There’s a lot of ways to interpret this song. I’m fascinated by the ending in this version. The visual of Jesus, beaten and tired from carrying the cross, Mary crying at his impending death, cut with Judas jamming out asking if he really meant to do all this. Was it worth it? Is this really part of the plan? No good answers but it’s a hell of a great representation of this song
Gamer's get it. The various Deities and Pantheons of that age often tortured, murdered, and abused humans. The old testament is filled with the slaughter of those who displeased various deities... Christ put ALL his skill points in healing and resurrection. The very worst the Romans, The Sadducees, the Gods could toss at Christ was DEATH on a Cross... Welp, He took it like a real champ and popped right back up 3 days later.
No problem. Gates of Hades Broken. The ULTIMATE LOVE overcoming all violence and evil. Good Move. CHRIST: FLAWLESS VICTORY.
Dude really?

Can you imagine the spit take?
growing up, Jesus Christ Superstar was pretty heavily joked about. until recently, I wasn't really into musicals either, so I never really looked into it.
I heard Ian Gillian sing Gethsemane and decided to look a bit into it; hearing Heaven on Their Minds, Gethsemane with Ted Neeley, and this, it's all truly something really special. Carl Anderson is such an insane talent. seeing him lowered from that chain with that insane bassline and funk backdrop to deliver this performance never fails to spark something in me.
the camp, the glitz, the nerve to pull this off while singing about Jesus Christ from the perspective of Judas and showing images of his crucifixtion... not enough words to describe how amazing I find this.
Yep, there is something very special about this musical AND about this movie.
The musical itself has amazing music and the lyrics are absolutely incredible.
It's a timeless philosophical reflection on the character of Jesus and Christianity itself, as it began and how it developed throughout ages to become what it is today.
The movie really is an incredible and unique piece of art.
The cinematography, costumes, actors, sets...
The psychedelic influence of the hippie era suits it just perfectly 😃
50 years watching and listening and always as emotional as the first time in theathre: music, lyrics, coreagraphy: a timeless masterpiece
Same here.
Totally
Carl Anderson was amazing. It may sound silly but JCS helped kid me understand the passion better than church and is part of the reason why I'm a Christian
Not silly at all. Same here. God bless you.
The scene begins with a shot of Jesus with his scourged back to the camera, then dissolves to a shot of him in his white garb, turning to the camera, and the instrumental overture is almost triumphant. I remember the first time I watched this movie as a kid (thanks, Mom) and interpreted the scene as Heaven getting ready for Christ to fulfill his destiny and come home...there's just one question left to be asked first.
He didn't get enough credit for this role. Hands down he's got the best voice for all the actors who've ever played Judas.
I met Carl in the late 90’s while he was touring the musical. A most wonderful Human being 💖
That’s sooo cool. He’d seems like he was such a sweetheart and a really cool guy
O quanto eu te invejo 😊
Some people are born for something. Carl Anderson was for this role. He was more than just this role but the role was not more than him. Incredible filming, lyrics and portrayal.
Yeah. Many people would manage to sing this just as well as him, but Anderson is not just a singer, but an actor also and he took over Judas' concern, pain, grief and love... transformed into Judas like nobody else.
50 years old 😮 still fresh
I totally agree. Even now I still never get tired watching this movie.
I wish they had this version on the soundtrack. The way he says “mass communication” for instance. Just so much attitude and passion behind it. He killed it.
I love this scene! ♥️ I played Judas in a church play version of Superstar years ago, so this scene has a special place in my heart.
How fun for you. What great memories that must be. I loved the Judas character the most! Good for you!
Oh wow! Me too! Well, I didn’t play Judas- I was Mary Magdalene in my 8th grade (at Catholic school) production of it. We had a cool old hippy teacher who let us do it as our annual Passion Play at Eastertime.
Judas was never the bad guy. He was rightfully concerned, and his worst fears were warranted.
@@christophercasey6775 agreed and he continuously warned jesus and he wouldn't listen... Jesus also however knew that he was supposed to die on the cross which is probably what caused him to continue to still act irrational.
... Elvis Presley is there...
“Did you mean to die like that?
Was that a mistake?
Or did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?”
No matter who you think Jesus was, he died for us all. Breaks my heart and fills it at once.
Love you Carl Anderson. You were so so so meant to play Judas Iscariot. R.I.P.
This isn't my go-to JCS, but I really love how clear-cut and sharp it is that Judas singing "Superstar" is a vision inside of Jesus' mind, both infinite and viscerally tied to the present moment.
True
Jesus was always a figure of paradoxes ("both man and God" and such), so that felt fitting
Not a Christian but this has got to be one of my favorite musicals. At least top five. And Carl Anderson, damn. He and Neeley were absolutely perfect ♥️
Absolutely brilliant. What a magnificent voice.I love the costumes too. Rest in Peace, Carl Anderson 🌹
An unbelievable voice and a criminally underrated and borderline forgotten performance
2:25 is such an amazing shot in my eyes. There’s so much imagery and representation. The sun is representing God and the hill top is death. Jesus is marching with the cross to God while facing certain death and God is there watching from afar. It’s kinda like a “call of light” or “light of life” or “follow the light” moment.
Nearly 50 years on and it's still freaking awesome.
been decades since i heard any of this . . . still catchy as hell.
Too bad hell doesn't exist
Even if Jesus wasn’t the son to god, this act of love and compassion, this sacrifice has touched people for generations, for two- *thousand* years. Regardless of the truth, his impact is undeniable
Yeshua never existed - he was probably a creation of Saul of Tarsus
I agree, and I'm an atheist. I also love his message of forgiveness and mercy. "Cast the first stone.." etc.
@@philsymesEven non Christian historians such as Josephus and Tacitus have recorded that there was a dude named Yeshua, living in Israel in the 1st century.
Unfortunately some of his followers still won't listen.
He was.
Carl Anderson was incredible in this film.
His version of 'Heaven on Their Minds' was the best ever version and had a profound effect on me when i first saw it as a child.
A few years before he tragically died, i sent him an email telling him this and he sent me back a wonderful reply.
Carl Anderson RIP
WHY is Jesus Christ Superstar NOT in theatres TODAY???
World TODAY ESSPECIALLY young NEEED see this movie. Jesus IS HOPE
We know why, the answer is right in front of us...... Man handed they keys to Satan and want “destruction” want “chaos” they KNOW the Bible, Jesus, only one God.... is REAL. They want to cancel all voices of reason, including Jesus Christ.

Good question. Is it possible to ask conspiracy questions? It asks some vital questions, like what is power? The Crosse

This film is a masterpiece. I love watching the clips.
Lets face it, the 1970's was when human coolness reached it's zenith. Such cool people created the best musicals ever. Jesus Christ Superstar, Hair, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, Godspell, and probably a few I'm forgetting.
So glad my childhood and teen years took place in the 1970's. I loved all the great weed, the hippies, the easy sexuality, and the hopefulness of the youth who thought they could change the world into a peaceful loving place. They were wrong, but it was cool while it lasted.
Good god! You named them all when it came to "rock operas" of the time of the 60's and 70's.
Over decades, I was lucky enough to see Neeley and Anderson preform together and the see Jesus Christ Superstar yeas later. One time with Ted Neeley and one time with Carl Anderson. As to everything else you mentioned, I have Hair, Tommy, Rocky Horror Picture Show, Grease, and Godspell either on musical disc or video.
You are right when rock was so cool and music and lyrics just flowed
Absolutely true, the 70s are the best.
Add to that list Fiddler on rhe Roof- also directed by the great Norman Jewison.
When I begin to doubt my faith, I rewatch this film. Carl Anderson and Ted Neely restore my faith every single time. God bless you, gentlemen!
I always thought the whole musical kinda pointed out that Jesus was just an ordinary man. This song literally asks, why would the son of God appear in a weird village in a place where there were messiahs and prophets dropping out of every corner, but avoid appearing in front of any video recording equipment
@@MyGrooThat’s why it is about faith. It either touches something in you or it doesn’t. It does in me.
@@MyGroo Except it's ambivalent, it also points out that Jesus predict Peter's denial and Judas' betrayal when otherwise it's unexplained how he could have known about it.
@MyGroo
Jesus is both Fully Human and Fully Divine
@MyGroo
The Song also contains many frustrations and confusions towards Jesus as a man but the final part touch christians to the core because Judas might be asking Jesus Questions why did he have to die and Why did Jesus sacrifice meant?.
To a Christian we have our own Answer, For Us
I like that Judas was apparently in his heaven with a harem of beautiful angels. He was part of God's plan after all and served well. I saw the play as a middle-schooler when it first came out and still have some of the songs playing in my head from time to time. It's a masterpiece and I love it.
Fitsnwellnwith thr Gosple of Judas where Jesus told Judas he isntivign him thr most important chores, to release his if "his clothing" to the plan could be completed. Obviously this was not written by Judas, and thr Gospel of Juadas was not found until long after this move was finished yet it fits. Judas was not the evil betrayer. He was given three chore to betray Jesus so he could be crucified. What woukd have happened if Jeus had escaped and lived a nice long life and married Mary Magdalene, had kids, and died line a regular person? Thr Last Temptation of Christ delved into that scenario.
Judas in this song isn't Judas but a Representation of the modern Agnostic and even those who is struggling with Faith with reference to mass Communations and Mohammed who was born centuries after Jesus died.
This scene is so hard. I love the first part with the questions, Why did you let things get so out of hand? and Why did you pick such a strange time in a strange land?...Do you think you are what they say you are? but as Jesus struggles to get up the hill with the cross... hurts my heart so much.
I think this entire play must have been very hard to play a character.
Let's hear it for Ted Neely and Carl Anderson! RIP gentlemen!
Isn't Ted still alive and still playing as Jesus?
@@Milliardo5 Yes, he is! Carl passed away, but Ted is still alive
Honestly, the shot at 1:53, where it pans across his face, feels very modern, and it's such a cool shot.
"Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker" is such a great line and Carl Anderson nails it perfectly
1:52 great shot and great expressions
This is one of the best song ever writem for a play, my father died last year and i tank him so much for showing me all this amazing melodies
No apologies: this remains the best interpretation of Rice and Lloyd-Webber's material, in part because it was made at the time of the piece's creation and thus is firmly lodged aesthetically and thematically in the sensibilities of the time. This doesn't mean more recent 'concept' remounts are uninteresting, just more detached from the material; none seems as close as this, as subtle, as ideologically open ended and, in some cases, provocative [i.e.; the decision to shoot in Israel and Jordan utilizing local military hardware in the months before the Yom Kippur War] - and as sexually ambiguous [no contemporary self-conscious and self-interested gender bending, non-binary, draggy, rhetorical clap trap can come close to the lighthearted casual ease of the pansexuality in this version]. To call the scene 'cheesy' is to grossly misinterpret the time - this was the age of glam rock: chrome, lurex, mylar, fringe, sequins, beads, lycra, plunging v-necklines, backlighting and lens flare...the sheer glitter of this number - a riff on the stadium rock concerts of the time - beats the sullen '50 shades of khaki' paramiltarism of more recent versions in spades.
things could be today in tones of grey ( PC ) but You nail it!! Its represent his time and his place.
I agree 100% This is the time period when you can picture a group of people driving out into the desert to find answers to questions they're earnestly asking. Every modern production of this musical comes off as cynical.
You are correct...no other version is even close..
You should be a music journalist.
@@vanyadolly I find any telling of this story to be cynical. Humanity at our worst. Nobody brave enough to stand up against the injustice.
I imagine that’s the point: no earthly person can be our savior, nor can any earthly power save us from ourselves. Even most of those that recognize Jesus as someone important are only following him for their own worldly benefit (fame, coolness).
With this understanding of the story, I find every telling to be cynical. Humanizing Jesus and Judas only makes it more heartbreaking.
Saw this movie in the theatre was I was about 10 years old. I've seen it numerous times since then and have the albums and cds. Know every word of the entire movie by heart.
I bought the original vinyl album in 1970 ( I've still got it), and saw the film when it came out in 1973.
Best scene in the movie. It truly makes you think how special it is for all of us to be here.
That Bass line is on fire hope to learn/play it one day.
I was 20 years old when this came out. The broadway cast came to my community college and did some songs from it. It was one my favorite movies at the time and I liked it better than some of the other stage productions I saw.
Why can't we see and hear the piece til the end? The end is AMAZING! If you want people to buy let them hear it! I own the movie several times over! I have seen the production on Broadway, and Ted Neeley's touring company twice! I have seen Carl Anderson on stage and he got better as he aged. I can't play the disc on my computer. It won't work BUT I OWN IT! I have paid more times than you can count for this production. Why are you cutting the end off? Those who have not see this production have NO IDEA how great Carl Anderson, and the original cast really are - THANKS TO YOU - AND YOUR NEED FOR PROFIT! THEY NEVER WILL! God help you and Jesus Christ too!
AND I have been to Ted Neeley's screening of the movie. Neeley is a Gift from God! I paid for that too!

The production blended the aesthetics of Jesus's actual time and more modern days.
My friends and I used to have a theory that it was actually a post apocalyptic future and that this was all being performed by people who had discovered certain lost relics from before the End; a Bible, some 70’s music collections and imagery, and a broadway performance recording of some kind.😆🤣😆🤣

Excelente película musical ,sobre los últimos años de Jesucristo..grandes actores y música original de m calidad..muchas gracias por presentar y compartir.
This is a breathtaking scene without a doubt. I remember when JCS came out and how outraged the very religious were, but the musical helped to introduce so many to Christianity and suggested the idea that church music could be fun. It took a while but now so many churches involve contemporary acoustic rock and country music that attracts parishioners. I don't think A.L. Webber had any idea what he was accomplishing at the time.
I love this! The performance is amazing and the ambiance is so seventies it’s just awesome!

I will never forget the day in 5th grade when my music teacher played this movie without knowing as she left the classroom.
This entire piece moves me so much: the dancing, Anderson's singing, the awesome bass playing by Alan Spenner, and wonderful Baayork Lee (angel in front at 0:55, 1:20, and 1:28). Like many of you, I love the panning camera at 1:52, but my favorite shot is the righthand white-afroed dancer stopping and smiling into Judas's eyes at 0:37.
