Brilliant bass playing supremo, not only on this album but also in most of the contemporary work of the era. Synth pop came along in the 80's and just about murdered bass players of this calibre. Creative, emotive and melodious bass players simply were no longer in demand. The 60's and 70's bass players were some of the finest in the history of rock music. Modern listeners may mistakenly think that these bass guitar geniuses were overplaying, but that's the last thing that they were actually doing. Creative and emotive bass melodies and embellishments made these players some of the best, just so glad we still have the recordings of their work. Some of these guys were right up there with Stanley Clark but applying their craft to rock and pop music of the time instead of jazz prog rock. Quite a lot of these guys could also play guitar and could have been great lead guitarists in their own right.
I love his small break with the rhythm and tone at "..Then leave her ALONE". He almost switches into speaking, and it's very effective in making it sound like he really means it.
We went to see Ted Neeley in one of his last performance playing Jesus Christ Superstar in Newark, NJ. Not one dry eye in the crowd he had us convinced, he will always be an amazing superstar of his craft.

When I saw this 50 years ago, and was blown away, Teds presence was so enormous, I had no idea he was a mere five foot six. When he performs Jesus, he is possessed by something greater than himself!!!
I’ve seen many Jesus movies made through history, & the greatest ones each emphasize something different about Jesus. The Greatest Story Ever Told emphasizes God in Jesus, while Jesus Christ Superstar emphasizes the man of Jesus, while still hinting at God in Jesus. It’s important to understand both, not ignore one for the other. That’s why we have several great Jesus movies. JCS succeeds in presenting Jesus in this rock opera format. I did my own videos on this if you’re curious to see more.
@@grim0882 Jesus was both completely man and completely God. Just because He became doesn’t mean that He was a sinner. Sure, He had human flaws like He had to sleep and drink at eat, but He didn’t sin.
"I can give you facts and figures. Even give you plans and forecasts, even tell you where I'm going." This tells us that Jesus Christ is, at the moment, a talented mathematician, strategist, astronomer and navigator.
My man Judas was actually spitting truth. "It doesn't help us if you're inconsistent. They only need a small excuse to put us all away." Christ was angry at him, but Judas wasn't wrong in this scene. He brings up an excellent and valid point.
Judas didn't see the bigger picture: Jesus knew from the start where it all ended, with him dying on the cross. None of the apostles understood that until it was too late. "If you knew the path we're riding/You'd understand it less than I."
Judas wanted Jesus and the movement to lay low... it was becoming dangerous. But that was not the destiny, and Jesus knew it. He was all knowing. He knew his grim future and he accepted it, as painful as it was.
I agree with some of Judas say but what he said about Mary Magdalene was needless and unkind. Like Jesus said" if your slate is clean then you throw stones. If your slate is not, then leave her alone". Judas may have brought up excellent points but he deserves to be chewed out and scolded in this instant. That shows that both Jesus and Judas are not wholely right or wrong about the other.
@@warriorking0723 I've been thinking about that line a lot. After analyzing it, Jesus was still being a tool. By saying if your slate is not clean, you shouldn't throw stones. But none of us are perfect. Jesus was judging him by an impossible standard; you must be perfect, otherwise, you don't have the right to criticize. I disagree. We can be flawed human beings, and still be allowed to criticize others, without being hypocrites.
@@sebastiannemeth-ramirez2160it may be true that we can criticize others without being hypocrites but we shouldn't be too eager to deal out criticism and/or judgement, or should we say we shouldn't have those as a primary comfort zone or source of personal empowerment because the road from valid criticism to self-righteous bigotry is shorter than what some of us would think. Just look at the high priests of Judea who prosecuted Jesus as good example.
I’m not a Christian , well not anymore , but Jesus is the man isn’t he , coolest deity ever in my opinion . The stories of Jesus have made me a more tolerant compassionate man, in hindsight I think this movie made me into a Jesus fan , not the awful religion
If you're a believer in Jesus Christ, and his being the son of God, that makes you a Christian regardless. You need not follow any organization to be a Christian. But, if you mean you don't believe in him like that, but simply believe the rest of what he had taught, why do you not believe? Why is the rest of what he said illuminating and true universally, but his declaration of Godhood untrue and worthless? Why would you trust someone's moral teachings so fully, while ignoring such a scam as his saying he is the incarnate son of God? If someone said to you one day: "I am literally God. Here's the way you should live your life," would you not find their moral teachings suspect? I would myself be looking to the fact his teachings are correct, and then seeing if his claim to Godhood held any water.

By far my favorite movie. Growing up in Hong Kong they used to play this every Christmas 70’s and 80’s. We always sat the whole family and watched it.
Proud to have attended the italian JCS show last year, casting Ted Neely himself!
I still can't believe that I saw him live!
Seriously, Neeley and Anderson were absolutely perfect and made for rhis musical ❤
The bass line on this music is sick..in a good way.
The “Judgey” Jesus gets when he sings “while you prattle thru your SUPPER”. He sounds like a dad who’s patience is really being tested.
I know every single line of this movie lol. Every Easter I watch it.
We watch it every Palm Sunday or the weekend of Palm Sunday
