YouGoPro was better in the prime years, but love teaching the kids I coach to tinker with it...they like when I throw it to them in bp...lots of laughs from them when they miss and look silly
Thank you for all the help with the fork! I play highschool ball, and this is my favorite and my best strike-out pitch. Your advice has really helped me out with it.
This is what Mike McCormick did in the late 1960s with the Giants. I learned how to throw this at a pitching camp where he appeared in SoCal and demonstrated it. Robert Coello of the Angels and Nathan Eovaldi both have thrown this in recent years.
I threw a forkball for 2 years in high school. My teammates couldn't bunt it and it wasn't hit once in a game. Should of threw it more. 15 ft from the plate it fell off the table and would break 2 or 3 feet. Depending on my wrist action, I could break it in as well. Took about a month just to able to throw catch with it but once you get it down, it's awesome. It don't hurt the arm or elbow, either.
Hey john when i start throwing a 2seam/sinker my elbow starts to bother me but i can throw a 4seam fine. Im a college pitcher and was wondering if it was something mechanical when throwing a 2seam thanks.
Mine has no rotation at all. I basically throw a 75mph knuckle ball. I accidentally figured the pitch out. My hand was crushed between a truck and boat a number of years back that cost me the feeling in my middle finger. I started playing ball again when I tried to throw a split finger I didn't realize how deep the ball was tucked in between my fingers because I couldn't feel it. It surprised the hell out of me and ended up being a pitch I used all the time. Happy accident. The only problem with it are passed balls. If I don't know where the pitch is going, the catcher sure as hell doesn't. When you get the occasion kamikaze dive at the plate, its guaranteed to result in a passed ball. Having the knuckling action means you can't ever duplicate the ball's movement from pitch to pitch. That makes it as much of a nightmare for catchers as it does hitters.
Their almost unhittable. I've made really good hitters bail out almost constantly. Lolol. When my catcher first started getting them, his glove was head high and he would drop it to his knees. When we threw catch he wore a mask and chest protector. I think mine was about 60mph but I never sad anything that moved like it.
What was the velocity on your forkball (just curious)? You know the vertical drop you would get on it? (Vertical looked any where between 12-15in but it’s hard to tell in the video)
Side arm gives it more of a sideways break to it usually. The arm higher up will give it more vertical movement most of the time but with this pitch it is no guarantee to know how it will break each time it's thrown
Coach could you get some pitchers you knew to talk maybe about some of their grips? I like the videos with your friend coming to talk about batting , could you get a pitcher ?
I don't doubt that pitch is hard to hit/catch. However, I don't believe this is the "traditional" forkball, albeit a more common version used nowadays. Traditionally, the fork would have a slow top spin, breaking downward - with an action somewhere between a split (slow back spin) and a curve (fast top spin). Jose Contreras comes to mind. Would love to see a video on the traditional version of the fork, popular in the mid-century as it has fallen out of popularity in modern day baseball.
Throw catch with him. It takes practice to just throw catch with a fork ball. Give it a couple months. It worked fantastic for me. I got the forkball idea from watching an opposing pitcher whose hand looked like his fingers were spread when he released it. His as a fastball not a fork but must of been a split seam one.
You don't use the thumb. Between the index and middle finger. I've had mine sink 4 or 5 feet when I had a good grip. It fell off the table about 15ft from the plate.
Not how I threw my forkball. I threw mine traditional and was even nastier. Index and middle finger behind the seams, push off when releasing. Apply more pressure to the finger you want the ball to break away from. Can make the ball go anywhere you want with nasty movement. If it's hit at all then it's gonna be an earthworm headache!!!

The forkball is such a fun pitch to throw
You go a nasty one?
YouGoPro was better in the prime years, but love teaching the kids I coach to tinker with it...they like when I throw it to them in bp...lots of laughs from them when they miss and look silly
haha i hear ya

Dirty! The catcher was having trouble catching it so hitting it must be a chore!
+Brandon Eaton 💪⚾️🔥
My catcher had to get used to it too.

Ey! You’re back! Love the vid! You should do one about a “ circle” or “ box” changeup
I'm alive! More vids coming tomorrow and thereafter! I will certainly make that for you!
Been missing your videos. Glad to have you back.
Glad to be back!
Are there any forkball pitchers in the majors? Shouldn't kids work on pitches that don't approach the plate like a drunken irishman.
Not sure about pitchers these days, but Roger Clemens used to throw a nasty forkball.
former MLB pitcher *Dave Stewart* #forkball
Homer Bailey KC Royals
They should cause it don't hurt the arm or elbow
Hey coach do you have any tips on how to throw my knuckleball without spin way easier make a vid please thanks.
I've got a couple vids on the knuckle. Search em up.
Throw the fork. Mine looked just like a knuckler and movement was wild crazy
Hey john when i start throwing a 2seam/sinker my elbow starts to bother me but i can throw a 4seam fine. Im a college pitcher and was wondering if it was something mechanical when throwing a 2seam thanks.
+Nick Hmmm that's weird. I'd say stick with the 4 seam til you figure it out.

Mines slower but the same action. It would sometimes sink 4-5 ft. It would also break a couple feet if I added some wrist.

Hey when you pitches younger players should wait to use in the future next time can you make sure to let us know the age span

i sweat a lot's from my hand i can use this instead of lick ?
I noticed that you threw the first forkballs overhand and then with the catcher it was side arm. It seems to break more side arm?
Side arm gives it more of a sideways break to it usually. The arm higher up will give it more vertical movement most of the time but with this pitch it is no guarantee to know how it will break each time it's thrown
That is a hard pitch to throw. Such a variety of pitches to throw as a pitcher. So many. It is an art from what I see.
Coach could you get some pitchers you knew to talk maybe about some of their grips? I like the videos with your friend coming to talk about batting , could you get a pitcher ?
Question do you have to side arm the pitch or can you go over the top
How do I properly throw a change up. A regular change up. I try to throw it but it is just as fast as my fastball
+Andrew Damsgard Cronin I'm posting a video about this in a couple days so be sure to watch it
YouGoPro of course thank you
you're welcome
Does it matter for what your arm angle is?
2:41 (what is this?)
_forkball_ *variant* ? #fun
Love you you are a great guy
Thanks buddy. You too
Watched this live and then checked it out again
My man!
Wouldn’t people be able to tell if it’s coming when you lick your hand?
How do I throw a vulcan with this slip action without losing velocity
The harder you try throwing these, the less movement I got. Mine was almost unhittable.

That looks like a pitch my son needs. Can an 11 year old with good size hands throw this? Thanks.
I wouldn't throw it til he gets older

@@YouGoPro I agree but I'd get him used to it when he is young. At 17, that boy will be hell on hitters.
Where do you place your thumb?
You don't use the thumb. Between the index and middle finger. I've had mine sink 4 or 5 feet when I had a good grip. It fell off the table about 15ft from the plate.
*seed sacking my seed sacks*
Fernando Cruz of the Reds throws a real Forkball, even though most announcers call it a split, it is not! It is damn nasty!
Do you play Madden
That’s sick
What a bad spot for a baseball diamond lol all those cars passing in the background

This pitch help me strike out my coach!
Pete Rose talking about Fork Balls brought me here lol
