@@zachattack4982 your coach cares about you .... could be worse.. its high school get all you guys a chance .... he knows if your that nasty 5 innings in plunty off tape on you.. id thank him
@@zachattack4982 when I pitch I only pitch for 50 to 75, that last about 5 or if I get a lot of k’s I’ll make it to 7th inning. There just worried about your arm
Would like to see a video showing what these pitches look like when thrown. For the youth players they seem to be more visual learners. Keep up the awesome work!
Just an FYI, firmer grip pressures promote high elbow ligament strain due to the engagement of the extensor muscles that attach to the UCL while throwing. The harder you grip, the more strain on those connections with higher muscle engagement through the throwing motion
I think a lot of it is more personal and has to do with arm slot. My curveball is really nasty but I need to leave some room in my palm to release the ball. I do put lots of pressure with my middle finger. My slider is also dirty but the thing about the way I throw it is that I don’t put lots of pressure on it because I’m trying to get behind that ball instead of on top and around.
fork ball used to be my favorite and i would play with finger pressure between the middle and pointer to get the sideways movement without changing my release angle. worked great for me personally
The hook was my closer when I played Babe Ruth Baseball in Arkansas. The hook requires a very tight grip on the laces, flip of the wrist without a lot of torque. It comes right at the batter then hooks in now depending on where the batter is standing, most of the time the batter will jump out the batter's box when the ball is coming at them then it hooks in. This depends on the amount of spin from the wrist to determine how much hook a pitcher wants. It's all in the grip and wrist.
Great video coach, loyal watcher for last 4-5 years and my own son and the teams I coach have benefited greatly from the knowledge you share. Thank you from all the little league coaches who have really learned alot from your channel.
Great vid as always - do you have any opinions on front foot toe pointing? I've heard you should have your toes pointing down on your leg lift instead of flexed up so the front foot is loose and relaxed instead of tensed up. Another possibility would be change-up grips for small hands. Only questions I can think of at the moment.
Thanks for this i think it will help me a little bit but do you think you could make either a video about pitch control or a video about the knuckle curve that would be awesome thanks
NOTE: the tighter and deeper you hold the ball the more resistance is applied. More resistance = slower pitches. His grip tension is perfectly fine for changes and breaking pitches, but not a good idea for fastballs. Also note, what you just watched was HIS style of throwing the ball and it may not work well for you. The most important lesson to learn is when he describes what the ball is supposed to do. Try it like he suggests. If it works for you, great. If not, try rotating the ball slightly or try a slightly different grip. The goal is to get the ball to do what you want. Many years ago, I was talking to Tommy John (That Tommy John, the man the surgical procedure was named after). I asked him how he threw his famous curveball. He showed me. I spent a week trying to copy him and not only were my curves pathetic, I couldn't get them anywhere near the plate. His hands were bigger than mine and he held the ball high, almost like a snow-cone. But, taking what he said about spin, I lowered the ball considerably and used my thumb to help add more spin when I snapped my wrist. A couple weeks later, I ran into him again at Pete Rose's place (a sports bar in Boca Raton, FL) and showed him how I altered his curve. His reply, "Son of a b****! You've got more break than I ever did!" To top it off, I could hit the strike zone consistently. So, take what this video has taught you and make it your own. Make it what works for you. The only real criticism I have is his deep grip advise, if applied to fastballs. Hold the ball as loose as possible and as far out from your palm as possible, but not so loose or so far as it causes you to lose control. NOTE: a fastball held tight, and deep in the palm of the hand, is not a fastball. It's a straight change (aka: two-finger change-up)
Coach John - the difference between the 2-seam and the sinker comes down to rotational axis, correct? The 2-seam has roughly 1-7 backspin, whereas the sinker has more like 2-8 backspin? Why is it that by definition the sinker has arm-side movement. Would it be possible to throw a glove-side movement sinker by throwing A cutter with 10-5 backspin?
Pronate your hand slightly. My changeup was the same way. Then my pitching coach told me to pronate a little when throwing and I got sinking action w/ sideways movement
hi coach i watch all your videos i am from turkey i currently coach and play baseball but baseball just start in turkey couple years ago before everything we are short on equipment do you know anyone could send it to me free maybe used equipment? should i get i touch with clubs or maybe mlb? any ideas could help thank you so much
Tamer Demir it is funny to hear you talk about equipment. When I was a kid and the seams came apart we would tape the ball back together with electric tspe
The fork ball can be a give away pitch. So what I would do when I used to pitch was for every pitch I would fiddle with the ball in my glove to make it look like I was throwing a fork ball change up only to throw either a fastball or a different off-speed pitch.
1:38 lol he still looked around before licking his fingers. Can he tell us why a good amount of mlb pitchers touch the brim of thier hat after getting the ball back!
rjclark730 LOL gotta make sure “Blue” isn’t watching 🤣 I think touching the hat is just a habit. Too hard to hide a substance on the hat (if that’s what you’re implying). Not saying it isn’t done but most guys I’ve seen have “it” on their glove side wrist.
The dead fish i call a “gravity sinker”. Basically u don’t throw it hard enuf to make it to home plate and it drops due to gravity 😀 Different grip but same idea
I did not agree with how you explained how to throw a change up. Every pitch is done with the wrist think fast you want to pop the wrist. However with a change up which I threw the force style change up or football grip change up. So when you throw the change up you want to lock your wrist while trying to create as much back spin as possible. Best change there is if you throw it right.
@@themonkey5918 the change up and "fork ball" my split finger (not a split finger fastball) worked well with good wrist action. Even the knuckle ball worked well with good wrist action. I think back spin vs locked wrist Back spin wins to get more movement and difference in interrupting batters timing because he sees or thinks fastball from so much spin. Sinker, Tom House and Nolan Ryan taught to throw an overhand curve for a sinker with alot of back spin that fooled hitters. It saved his arm for a long career. The sinker he teaches is what Fernando Valenzuela throws as a screw ball, which is amazing but hard on arms.
It is great for pitchers but when I played first base I hated it because on someone plays when the pitcher throws to first the ball moves making it harder to catch.
I've thrown that forkball before and got it to work a few time and it dropped absolutely disgusting. It was at practice and my catcher was batting and he said "wtf was that why don't you ever throw that" 😂😂

Thanks for the video coach⚾⚾⚾⚓⚓💪. Always had doubts about this. Now that it's cleared ,I'm gonna rock in my games now.😁
Super super super sweet advice as usual!

Finally pitching instructions from a pitcher lol, just missing with U., what age should u start throwing pitches
13+... only with good mechanics though because you will screw you arm up without good mechanics
I would say whenever they can start lifting weights, working out steady. As well as super solid technique and mechanics.
Ean Hernandez no, not true. any age can throw a 2 seam, changeup, and cutter

I’ve been using the forkball and I’ve gotten a lot of pop ups to the shortstop
Nice video this is very useful

Do you have any tips to block the groundballs ?
Can u do a more in depth shuuto guide I am struggling to get it to move properly would appreciate it greatly
I'd like to see a video on what it means to lead with your hips but still have a simple motion in pitching.
Going to have my son try the "dead fish", I'll let you know how he does with it
I think the sinker will be my best pich
WDE! Final four. Nice video.
I have been told to hold my change up very loose for maximum velo loss is this right
Do all the same grips n pressures still apply the same for lefties?

spark spams l2 yeah, sinker is my favorite pitch, the batter usually hits a lot of groundballs
