It’s cool that they had a black drummer but make no mistake, D.H. Peligro is no diversity hire. Man had incredible chops and defined what The Dead Kennedys sounded like, he elevated every track he played on. He stands up in his own right and deserves recognition for his playing.
He was an incredible drummer. R.I.P.
Stage name was Klaus Flouride... says it all.
If you didn't expect a black man in a punk group, check out Bad Brains, especially I against I. If you want to back further, check out Death - an all black proto-punk group from the early 70's.
Nazis tried to infiltrate the punk scene, but real punk bands chased them off.
love that
Anti-racists include (imho) MDC, DK, Alice Bag, Minutemen, Bad Brains, Sepultura, DOA.. But open to interpretation. I also consider them anti- colonial. Along with Napalm Death, Brujeria, Los Crudos, Ratos De Porao, also rapper Immortal Technique is an expert on colonialism 💪🕊️✌️⚖️🏴☠️📣
Played in a Oi band. 2 skins 2 punks and a drummer
It's funny the media made antifa a bad word! That's how right wing US media and duopoly is. Other antifa punx include MDC, Alice Bag, Minutemen, Crass, DOA, Poison Girls, Conflict, Rudimentary Peni, Slits, Dils, Dicks, Napalm Death...
Even more irritating when you know they really mean Black Bloc.
The very first punk show that I saw was the Dead Kennedy's topping the bill. Very few concerts have topped that one. The guitarist, East Bay Ray, reminds of Link Wray on speed. A very distinctive sounding band for sure.
All Killer no Filler, every album
ill need to check it out
This single song humbles UK punk into the clothes faire it was always intended to be.
Crass would beg to differ mate. DK are freakin incredible but don't use them to Diss the whole Punk scene in the UK!
Serj from System of a Down was highly influenced by DK. When you hear both him and Jello's vocal quiver it all makes sense.
Dead Kennedys are badass. Every album. For another popular song check out Police Truck. It's sounds like you're more into heavy shit. Check out Nailbomb covering Police Truck live with D. H. Peligro (DK drummer) playing drums with them.
Dead Kennedy's "California Uber Alles "and then do the follow up "Bigger Problem"
The history of punk is very black. Bad Brains is a band to check out
"very black?" There were black folk involved with punk... let's leave it at that...
first punk band DEATH
oh fuck off you've just watched that race baiting youtube "documentary" about how all punk is founced by only black people as well havent you
@@mickeyrube6623 Black musicians were around for punk since day 1....
@@MarquisLeary34 What does that have to do with me?
Coming from the East Bay scene, there were no color barriers. You'd be surprised how inclusive punk was. Is?
It's not live, it's a montage video!!
I have been into punk for decades and American History X did an very good job of showing about how a sub group of punk exists. There are so may different groups. I "grew up" in the east bay and Gilman Street first years which were very against racism. They do not have a video...but check out ANYTHING by Crimpshrine off of "Sleep, What's That?" to get great punk without racism.
thanks
There is a great movie called AfroPunk. as others have mentioned the Bad Brains - if you put this into perspective DK was around in 1980 a mere 12 years after MLK was assassinated only 15 years after the Civil Rights Act the problem with understanding this music today is that after Obama and 9/11 and social media there was such a seismic shift there isnt a lot of connection to that era
"Stab your backs when you trash our halls
Trash a bank if you've got real balls"
PMSL
Now you should watch the Portlandia skit featuring Jello wearing that same nasty shirt decades later. BTW didn't DH also play drums for Red Hot Chili Peppers at some point?
I see someone else already mentioned them, but as for the comment about a black man in their band. Please check out Bad Brains! They're one of the best hardcore bands of all time and they're an all black band. Also check out Death if you haven't before. Specifically Politicians In My Eyes. Another amazing all black punk band.
yes i need to check out some bad brains big time and thanks for the suggestion
Punk has a huge Jamacian influence. The GOAT band of Hardcore punk, Bad Brains, are a Hardcore Punk -Reggae band and all black. In the 80s there was quite a few black punks. Public Enemy used to play at punk clubs in NJ. In NY they used to have punk-hiphop shows... To me Chuck D and KRS One are PUNK AF.
dude, you need to check out bad brains. one of the earliest punk bands and all black members. also check out afropunk. great doc, amazing how much punk culture sprung from african roots.
One band to check out is National Wake from South Africa, especially the video for "International News". Absolute killer track.
ill check it out thank you for the suggestion
Punk music at its best, is protest music.
Plenty of black people in punk. Its always been a good mixture of races....
If you find it weird that a black guy is in Dead Kennedys you should check out Bad Brains then
Do you only speak in plurals?
Hi greedings from Germany..
Try :"die toten Hosen - mehr davon, live, Hals und Beinbruch" (they are a succesful Punk band,, but See what the Singer did at this gig.. 😲).. /or.
"Null positiv - Independenz" (great female voice).. *black guys? Check out,, Bad Brains - live at CBGB.. 👍👍👍👍..
Do "I Am The Owl" by DK
Most of it wasn’t remotely white supremacy oriented
You need to check out Bad Brains they are one of the most influential / respected / original Hardcore Punk bands ever. Since you mentioned the drummer surprised you I'll let you know in advance they are 4 Black Americana Rastas (I only mention that to spark you curiosity, I see it as 4 dudes playing punk) They play Hardcore Punk and mix in some reggae songs too. They have incredible stage presence and energy. They started in the late 70s early 80s in Washington DC but relocated to NYC and became "pioneers" of NYC Hardcore. Well worth checking out. Maybe from this show it on UA-cam. "Bad Brains - Big Take Over (Live 1982)" the songs are short maybe you can di two short ones. Also Dead Kennedys and Bad Brains played together a few time. They also used to let the Beastie Boys open for them when the Beastie Boys were still a Hardcore band.
DK is the most anti government punk band. You need to get close and personal with Plastic Surgery Disasters album by Dead Kennedy's. Great reaction
The singer of DK, Jello Biafra had another band after DK called Lard. Basically it was Jello singing with Ministry. Great stuff. Jello Biafra also collaborated with a number of punk bands. Jello Biafra can also be found on two tracks off of IceT's album, Iceberg/ Freedom Of Speech...Just Watch What You Say. Fun side note, Jello Biafra also ran for Mayor of San Francisco. My name is Eric, I have played in a number of bands as well as had a punk/rockabilly radio show in the Bay area back in the early 90's. I grew up on punk rock and hip hop. I have pretty good knowledge of both. I enjoyed seeing your reaction. DK is an amazing band with amazing lyrics. Almost prophet like. If you ever have any questions about punk or such I'm happy to oblige.
@@EricSmith-fp4gqJello's birth name is Eric 🤓 I like his story of meeting Joey Ramone. First time ever meeting a touring artist. Blew his mind. In CO, along with his friend Joe who formed the band Angst ✊👽Joey was nice to them, he was the best Ramone🕊️
Dead Kennedys are my favorite band EVER. Not only their sound, but their lyrics are super politically aware and important.
Dude check of Death from Detroit and Bad Brains from Washington. Two extremely early black punk bands.
on the list cant wait to see it
There was a ton of black people in the punk scene back in the day, look at Bad Brains, they are legends.
"Silly right-wingers. Punk is about having GOOD opinions" - Andri from Pagefire
I think you might be a bit mistaken about a few things. First - there were more than a couple bands that had members who happened to be black. Heck, the band that created the genre of hardcore punk was 4 black guys from DC - almost all bands loved them. Also, black people in the late 70s & 80s were not as bad as you think. People knew if they used the N-word they would get their ass kicked so people didn't use it much. Keep in mind more than a few people in the black community were into punk - Ice - T for one. More than a few punks I hung out with in the mid-80s were also into hiphop, guys in CoC used to ride around blasting Run-DMC, LL Cool J, and Beastie Boys - like 1985. The whole nazi-punk thing were a tiny minority and often would not make an open face of being Nazis because there was a typical response @ a punk show to a Nazi - they kick their ass. People that would throw a Nazi salute - let alone where a swastika would have the crowd turn on them. Even bands would attack them - go see what the Dropkick Murphy's did to a nazi @ their show.
Plenty of black people in punk. Its always been a good mixture of races....
try CRASS, bloody revolution and Primus,To many pappies
I used to play NPFO at lease breaking levels to help me wake up in the morning
great way to start the mornings hahah
you can t see this from the video but JELLO BIAFRA is gay-the early punk scene was super inclusive-one of my fav fun facts is that BAD BRAINS were rastafarian and the CRO MAGS had (2?) hare krishna mambers
Thanks for the info!
Jello is jello. Not sure if he's pan, queer, heterosexual, or asexual. I'm pretty sure that it's his business. And he hasn't commented on it. Curious.
You should check out “Chicken Shit Conformist” so by Dead Kennedys. It’s a deep cut and a banger.
RIP DH Peligro
Bad Brains are black men in punk. They are iconic
Bad Brains, silly wabbit
Black drummer in the band FEAR as well
