I know it was a 1979 TV miniseries, but the creep factor of Salem's Lot still holds up.
And Let The Right One In (American version Let Me In, is also ok) should also be mentioned.

Fantastic. I am glad that you thought enough to have this recorded for all of us. For me, I have the following favorite vampire films:
    1. Nosferatu
    2. Horror of Dracula
    3. Dracula (1931)
    4. Dracula (Francis Ford Coppola)
    5. Fright Night

I love Herzog's revision of Nosferatu, a gothic vampire classic in its own right. The fact that Herzog actually filmed the movie twice, one in German and another in English, rather than use any sort of dubbing from one language to another is also an impressive feat. Also, Klaus Kinski perfectly embodies the title role, a bloodsucking creature of the night.

Surprised this wasn't mentioned. One of my top vamp flicks. I love how it captures the plague brought into town by Dracula's arrival. You really see it hit the community.
Such a grim film. Love it.

@@General_Ox Yes, I also appreciate how they actually set loose a swarm of over 10,000 real live rats on the town for that particular sequence, although I don't appreciate how those rats were treated by Herzog, having painted them gray for the scene. I'm sure that's an example of the kind of scene they wouldn't make today, especially with CGI and other effects that are available these days.

Many. many thanks to Jamie for stepping in with Pete and prepping an episode of The Monster's Den for us to enjoy while Pete is on a well--deserved vacation. Thanks, guys, for doing so and picking such an interesting topic. Had not watched Horror of Dracula until recently based on Pete's many times discussing the video. Excellent version and likely in the top five at this time. The original Bela Lugosi Dracula from 1931 has to be my top in spite of its flaws, That is the first vampire movie I saw as a kid and its impact never really left me. Have to watch it at least once or twice a year even almost 55 years or so after first seeing it. The Frank Langella Dracula also really good. Just missed seeing him play that role on the Broadway in the 1977 revival. Saw the play just after he left with Raul Julia in the title role and he was excellent (so good I had to see it every time I went to Manhattan until the play closed.) Though this is for films, the stage production is one of my favorite depictions of Dracula. Thanks again, Pete and Jamie, for stepping it up with an extra episode for this broadcast.

    3) Cpt Kronos Vampire Hunter
    4) Coppola's Bram Stoker's Dracula

I do prefer its more colorful version. Regarding the b&w vs. color controversy in general, I find it strange that some people won't watch old movies because they're in b&w, this was never a problem for us 'oldtimers' growing up thus wondering why that is so now. I suppose it's the lack of exposure today that's (literally) leaving many viewers in the dark, there's hardly anything shown in b&w on TV anymore although - and here's the kicker - many a current movie you could make a case for being almost monochrome anyway so drained of natural color these days, so the big deal about real b&w usually escapes me...

My all time favourite Dracula flick is the illegitimate original 'Nosferatu - A Symphony of Horror', a silent movie from 1922, directed by F.WMurnau, starring Max Schreck (his name translates to fright, terror) from Germany. Say what you will, guys, but this is THE ONE. Not only is the camera work absolutely stunning, the fact that it's only underlaid with 'horror music' makes it even more scary. And the remake from 1979, 'Nosferatu: Phantom of the Night', directed by Werner Herzog with Klaus Kinski & Isabel Adjani, is still great. Apart from that, I quite liked the version with Gary Oldman, Wynona Ryder, Anthony Hopkins & Keanu Reeves as 'Dragul'. The Hollywood original with Bela Lugosi is a fantastic classic, and, of course, you can never go wrong with Chris Lee.

Great to see your personal favorite vampire films...for me the best vampire film is and always has been Mario Bava's Black Sunday starring Barbara Steele. When I was a child my parents dropped me and my younger sister off at the local theater as they often did so they could spend an afternoon away from the kids. We watched the film through and then again. At one point we were so traumatized we ran screaming out of the theater. I've never been the same since. To this day I love to experience the absolute horror this amazing film inflicted on me so many years ago. Highly recommended.

Fun episode. Laszlo is always a great co host. No one puts more effort into bringing the fun and interesting, to the show, and i appreciate him. Thanks for giving us The Monsters Den even while on vacation, Pete. You are the man. Enjoy your down time! Cheers!
"What we do in the Shadows" is a very specific sense of humor . My brother loooves it (both the movie & tv show), and i think its total cringe. I went in thinking it was going to be hilarious, and i didnt laugh once. So youll either enjoy immensely or find it eyerolling.....im not sure there is an in between.
I really need to revisit "Dusk til Dawn" -- I havent seen it since it came out on video, when i was a kid. I hated it because it wasnt what i was expecting at all. I thought Tarantino....who i was a fan of as a director, was terrible in it. His acting was distractingly bad and i didnt like Clooneys character either.....
But like i said...i saw it once, 25 years ago, and i think i was too young to "get it". It seems to have aged well and deserves a second look.
I will note, the one visual that stuck with me to this day, that i thought was great -- I dont recall if its the end of the film, or just a poster -- its a camera pull out of the bar and you see that the back of the building is Mayan Temple, buried up to the top floor, in front....with all the trucks and former victims dumped into a pit around it. I loved that reveal, and still remember it.
My favorite modern vampire movies are Blade 1 & 2, and John Carpenters - Vampires. -- so that shows my lack of taste.
The classic films are all in their own league, and i dont compare them to the modern stuff -- Lugosi is king, and no one can touch him.
Thanks again guys. I had a blast watching.

Right on Pete, 30 Days of Night excellent vampire flick as is Fright Night, and of course Bram Stoker's Dracula. Gary Oldman in the castle, pretty freaky.

    Maybe an odd choice…
What We Do in the Shadows
is probably my favorite. It’s a comedy or mockumentary style, but I think it really borrows from those classic vampire films, and is just brilliant. The TV spin-off is excellent as well.

Kind of an oddball pick, but I really like "He Never Died" with Henry Rollins. Rollins is perfect in the roll and it`s got a sly sense of humor as well.

so many good ones...my list of 5 includes 2 that were mentioned in the comments already (well sort of for one of them). I'm listing them in chronological order:
    1. Blood & Roses (1960) my favorite film version of the 2nd most famous literary vampire, Carmilla
    2. Satanic Rites of Dracula (1973) just a fun Hammer movie where the adventure takes on a spy movie flavor
    3. Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires (1974) Hammer collaborates with a Hong Kong production company to make a martial arts vampire movie? sign me up...
    4. Rabid (1977) Cronenberg's take on vampirism is as an advanced form of rabies. really good movie!
    5. Bloodstone: Subspecies 2 (1993) I like the 1st 3 of the Subspecies series, but the 2nd one is my favorite one. Radu is a great vampire character.

Salem's Lot (1979) an absolute masterpiece! The 1977 BBC version of Dracula with Bosco Hogan and Louis Jordan is my vote for best adaptation.

Great picks. I would have had Bram Stoker's Dracula in my top 5 too.
Pete, Nosferatu I saw on TV as a very young kid in the 70's too and it scared the crap out of me.
I didn't sleep right for a week and still think the covers up to my neck will protect me from a nighttime vampire attack! Haha 😂

Five of my favourite vampire films in no particular order:
    - Dracula (1931). Love Horror of Dracula but to me personally, Lugosi embodies the character.
    - Nosferatu
    - Underworld (don't know if this counts, but it has vampires in it so whatever haha!)
    - What We Do In The Shadows
    - Interview With the Vampire
I'm watching Shadow of the Vampire next week and heard this film is very good. Looking forward to it!

  • @petrilampela

My favourites are "Let's Scare Jessica to Death" (easily one of the creepiest horror movies ever made), "The Last Man on Earth" (a movie that inspired Night of the Living Dead, the vampires on this one are more like zombies) and Hammer Film's "Dracula" as the third. I've never been into that classic style of romantic vampires and prefer movies where they do something new with the lore. Well except for Hammer's Dracula with Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee.

I recently an episode of Svenghoolie that had a new score inserted for Dracula (1931) and it made that otherwise creaky movie much more effective.
