      Well David Bell it is a nice dream. And it would be great if it became a reality! The question is.....does the Royal Navy have a Live Oaks forest in the UK to be able to have the wood they would need to overhaul the Victory? The Constitution has a Live Oaks forest in Indiana for the purpose that the US Navy owns.... And it would be EXPENSIVE! and Joe Torrance may have a very good point about wood being very rotten! And the other problem is that the skill sets needed to run one of those ships are mostly extinct. The Royal Navy would have to teach people how to do all of the skill sets such as carpentry and being able to run the rigging..... As an example, how many people are qualified as Sailing Masters???? Peace!

    I salute the UK's efforts to preserve this ship, heavily damaged at Trafalgar, yet the embodiment of the English Navy under Nelson at that precise period of time. Nelson, probably the greatest Admiral and Naval Tactician ever. He had the whole battle measured and set, then set his ships in for the massive victory that made England the master of the seas for over a Century!!! In the short run, following Trafalgar, Napoleon had no way to get his Armies across to England... Nelson not only established mastery of the Seas, but the peace of England... My how the English love him!!! One man, one nation, the British Naval Profession, and his skill and audacity... He crossed the "T" in several places, and the English sailors made good on that. Funny, there were also Americans on board pressed in to English service!!

      I hate to say it, but I doubt she would have survived.
      The bastards couldn't bring themselves to preserve WARSPITE, of all things. And Warspite was more deserving of preservation than any other ship in the world. I'd only compare USS Enterprise to her in terms of grand injustices of scrapping.

      Quite agree with the comment below. At the end of the war the country was skint. It needed every scrap of steel to make stuff for export. Also, the Brits in this era were never much on conserving or preserving stuff. In the late 40's there was no such thing as leisure time, people did not 'go out for the day" to see an exhibit like Warspite. However, I think it is widely thought that this is the one ship that should have been kept.

    • @deathbower
      @deathbower 4 роки тому +1

      Dreadnought was a huge mistake by the Royal Navy. In building that one ship, they made every other warship on earth utterly obsolete, which most strongly affected the British as they'd been building ships at a huge rate in the past 15-20 years so that they could be confident to beat the #2 and #3 navies combined. Wiping the slate clean was a disaster.
      Also, while it was (possibly) the most influential ship of all time from a design perspective, it became obsolete very quickly as the progenitor of a new paradigm of Battleship construction.

    • @benters3509

      ArrZarr uhh no Dreadnaught wasn’t a mistake, and she was not the first Dreadnaught style Battleship to be laid down, regardless of her construction the naval arms race would have begun and the Royal Navy would need to build Dreadnought style Battleships. Dreadnought was the first out because Fisher made sure to accelerate her construction as much as possible using triple shifts, stealing the guns and engines off of predreadnoughts that were still in construction and allocating every resource needed.

    Would be nice to see her on the water again.
    As I read the other comments below about USS Constitution and HMS Victory being the oldest. Yes, Constitution is the oldest floating commissioned ship. Victory is permanently drydocked. Constitution fought 42 engagements while Victory fought 5 major battles. If we were to pit both Constitution and Victory against each other there's no doubt Victory would defeat Constitution. But since Constitution is a frigate it's faster and manuverable. Both ships have one flaw, their stern. If shots made it into the stern it would cause massive damage. Shots would bounce from stern to stem. Given that I think it would be a stalemate.

    • @user-lv7ph7hs7l
      @user-lv7ph7hs7l Рік тому +1

      Yes sure but you need to be rich AF. The French frigate Hermione cost 30 million. Now granted she was built largely the same way as in the past as a historical research project save for drill and the like so you might be able to do it cheaper. But Victory is 3 times the tonnage of Hermione. So I think about 60-100 million would do it. There are companies who still build tall ships for movies and such like Bounty or HMS Surprise they would be the people to call. Also Hermione takes a crew of 70, which is a skeleton crew for her. You'd probably need 200-300 to sail her. But people do if for free on Hermione just for the experience. They also relearnt how to sail a square rigged ship so you'll need some sailing lessons. It's quite complex, the steering is mainly done by sail so you always need lots of hands moving the spars.

    • @user-lv7ph7hs7l
      @user-lv7ph7hs7l Рік тому +1

      Oh sorry I forgot the Bellona part, so a third rate would still be a huge ship. Probably still 60-80 million, it's still way more work. I do woodwork so if you need any hands let me know I would love to see HMS Bellona sail. But I need to be paid :P

    • @Praxics0815
      @Praxics0815 4 роки тому +7

      A new one won’t be the original.
      There is also a severe lack of properly experienced shipwrights.
      French based Le’Hermione is just a frigate and it took them 7 years and $22 million to build it.
      And it was build using some more modern methods than the original (modern adhesives, bracing etc.).
      HMS Victory is several times the size of Hermoine. The length is similar but Victory is about double the deckheight and has 50% more beam. Overall Victory is probably 3 times the size of Hermione.
      So you probably looking at least at a build time of 20+ years and costs between 100 and 200 million. By the end of it you do not have HMS Victory… you have a replica of HMS Victory.

    Put it in the water. It's absolutely ridiculous that you spent that money doing that. The 20% original wood on the USS Constitution is all below the waterline. The saltwater preserves the wood. Unlike the HMS Land Barge, the USS Constitution is entirely sea worthy. It could with 100% certainty, set sail and make the voyage across the Atlantic for Portsmouth this morning. The ship is taken into drydock every few decades for 3 years. There is no reason that HMS Victory should not be made sail ready. It is only 6 years older than the Constitution, yet they are in far different situations. The Constitution was in Boston harbor on Independence day and fired a 21 gun salute 2 months ago, July 4th, 2019. Sometimes when we look beyond our sphere of influence, there are better alternatives.

    • @LutzDerLurch
      @LutzDerLurch 4 роки тому

      Victory is noticeably older, about 1 average lifespan of a wooden war ship. Constitution was in bad shape, when it was decided to restore her to keep her afloat.
      That restoration meant a lot of original fabric of the ship had to be replaced and thus lost, so now constitution is about 20% original. With Victory, the decision was made to keep her in dry dock and preserve as much of her as possible, and there are somewhat 30-35% of her original 1765 timbers in her, mostly keel, lower frames and the orlop and lower gun deck.
      Her original timbers, though, are not in a conditions for active sailing etc., and would have to be replaced to make her seaworthy.
      So, the question if, if you'd rather preserve a 35% original ship in a dry dock, away from the onforgiving dangers of the sea, or do you replace most of what is left of her, so the remaining 5-10% can rot afloat?
      As much as it is unpopular to say this, victory would benefit from being kept sheltered from the elements, by, say building some sort of giand garage around and above her, to keep out storms, freezing water and burning sun.
