- This is the nearest you’ll ever get to travelling back in time to the early 19th century and experience what life was like on board a Royal Navy fighting ship over 200 years ago
This is HMS Trincomalee. Britain’s oldest Anti-Slavery Warship…As well as Britain’s oldest anti-slaver, Britain's oldest floating warship and she’s the second oldest warship afloat in the world…second to the American warship USS Constitution
The Trincomalee’s ship-keeper Jayne Rix gave me exclusives access to all areas and a private tour of the wonderful and charismatic warship. You’ll see that Jayne truly adores the Trincomalee and by the end of the tour, I did too…I’m sure you will as well
From the top deck to below the waterline in the hold, we really get into all the nook and crannies of Trincomalee. Jayne tells of the ships wonderful life and career on the high seas. From exploration to being involved in Britain’s Anti-Slavery policing around the world throughout the 19th century
Named after the battle of Trincomalee in 1782. A battle fought between the British and the French. Trincomalee’s is a port town on the west coast of Sri Lanka
The National Museum of the Royal Navy who have very kindly given me access to this enchanting ship. She’s cared for and kept in tip top condition by a team of shipwrights, riggers, conservators, and ship keepers all work tirelessly to keep Britain’s oldest floating warship afloat.
Built in 1817 in Bombay (modern-day Mumbai), HMS Trincomalee is now over 200 years old.
Before being stationed at Hartlepool, HMS Trincomalee travelled over 100,000 miles around the globe. Despite never seeing combat, HMS Trincomalee has a fascinating history. During her active service, she undertook duties that included policing, protection, and exploration.
The environment you’ll see and feel in this video is one that would have been absolutely normal to Lord Nelson and his men who fought throughout the Napoleononic Wars…it’s the closet we’ll get to travelling back in time!
This is a Captivating Tour of Britain’s Oldest Anti-Slavery Warship. HMS Trincomalee. Built 1817

Something different, always great content on here,
Great video David. Fascinating history, a history of this ship I never knew. Thanks for this little gem
My pleasure Stuart, it was brilliant and so interesting to film
Such a beautiful ship been around so so menny times myself it's the pride of the area north east nostalgia I live in Bishop Auckland /Barnard castle not far away from hartlepool
Amazing bit of history about the original plans! ❤🎉
She’s fascinating. A must visit
It's a great experience when I was in jonior school we visited it on a day trip been back loads of times absolutely love it
E I think you should take the train over brunells bridge in newcastle and do a video on the history of bridges and go around all the antique shops and rate there stock we would all love that
Using teak makes sense bug-resistant and water-tolerant. She's a tough customer to still be around 200+ years later. I'd say the Indian builders knew their stuff. I've been aboard the Constitution! She's a grand old girl.
@@OriginalNethead I’d love to visit USS Constitution…what a fine brace of ships they are!
Being an anti slave ship she might have sailed the Atlantic following the southern trade winds to the Caribbean, following up the US coast and crossing back to England on the northern trade winds. As a patrol vessel she could have boarded any English flagged ship. I would think a slaver flying under another flag was off limits unless caught in Canadian waters or the English Caribbean islands.
Its great that we have this ship here in the north east. Anyone who loves the Richard O'Brian novels (Aubery-Maturin series) should enjoy going on board her!
A great video. Brought back a lot of memories. I had the joy of sail training on board her in the 80's. I always thought about where she was now. I feel a visit coming on😁
Fantastic to hear and what a fantastic experience you must have had. Thank you
Was there a couple of years ago and it is amazing .. Nice video David
@@sounds4580 Thank you, it really is an experience to visit
The adjacent museum complex is not to be missed and no problem parking 😊
Great video. The oldest I believe is the HMS Unicorn birthed in Dundee Scotland is the oldest be afloat.
A truly interesting, historical ship. She is berthed at the Royal Navy Museum, Hartlepool. The only drawback (or something you need to prepare yourself for) about visiting is that the water in which she floats is behind a lock gate and quite often smells to high heaven.
Thank you, it’s good to be prepared!
Great upload as always,
Very interesting,
What a beautiful ship,
A must visit David!
@@DavidHarperAntiques Definitely 👍
A very interesting video well presented lovely ship credit to the ship builders.
@@davidlong6173 Thank you David. She is quite magnificent
Stayed on there in 1974 as his Foudroyant
I went downstairs on this ship at Hartlepool marina. I’m still under the orthopaedic consultant for cervical spine issues. 😁
It’s a shocker isn’t it!
I'm writing a novel based on a ship similar to this.
How tall would you have to be to be able to stand up straight without bumping the top of your head? 😁
@@theexplodinggrape80095 foot
Stationed at hms St Vincent Gosport for 12 months in 65 i sailed past the Foudroyant (as she was named then) 5 days a week in my dingy.
Thats brilliant, what a connection…thanks for letting us know. Cheers, David
Excellent , thank you sir.
You are most welcome
The Captains cabin has to have a lot of light as he spends most of his day doing paperwork and studying charts. Best done by lots of daylight, not candlelight!
Makes sense
I'd love to visit this ship
Check out the history of HMS Black Joke (a real ship), a Royal Navy slave ship chaser with the West African Squadron.
I will, thank you
This named after Sri Lankan town and port name Trincomalee ❤
That is true
Awesome Thumbnail
I think they missed a trick not putting the heads on the poop deck.
Is she still in Commission? She is flying the union flag from the jackstaff and Ensign at the stern ,
I’m not sure, but the website will have lots of info…link in video description. Thanks for watching
I have some... in Naval Action... 8)
Its a fallacy that people were shorter in those days. They were about the same height as we are today.
No they weren’t! the average height of a Georgian woman was 5ft and a man 5ft 5. I write about this in one of my books, so it must be true!
I have a whales tooth depicting on one side hms amphitrite, the sister ship of hms trincommolee, and on the other side, the Josepha, a slave trader capture off Brazil
What a wonderful object

I went on board some25+ years ago and she smelt of teak and stockholm tar even then😊 should take her out in the sea sometimes 😮
Lovely smell!
Nice Hat David
Built in Bombay, India.
Previous .name Was the Fordroyant berthed in Portsmouth Harbour , used as a Navy training ship. I joined the Navy in 1966, Hms Ganges ,then based in Portsmouth.
Slept in Hammock on board the Duncansby Head and Girdleness when the 2 ships were based in Scotland.1968 ( Hms Cochrane )
Visited the Trinc when back up in my native North East with family and grandkids.
Recommendation to visit if you are in the area.
Great info, thank you
Great story. Where are the Arab and African anti-slavery ships?
There wasn’t any!
@@DavidHarperAntiques Yes. Zilch.
Surely hms victory built in 1765 is britains oldest warship
Apologies, oldest floating warship…I do mention this in the video though
Oldest warship? HMS Victory launched 1765 had fought six battles and won Trafalgar way before this was laid down still good video though 😊
It is as I’ve described in the video
@@DavidHarperAntiques But you should correct the title. Oldest ship Afloat. Detracts from the Video when the title is wrong. Shame to detract from a good video
Do u guys know how much the Malabar teak cost now
A fortune I’d guess!
@@DavidHarperAntiques yeah bro
