Hildegard van Bingen was truly quintessential. Thanks for filming this, Julianne!

Oh another book to add to my collection. Since I don’t eat wheat I would try almond flour or like somebody else suggested oat flowered would work also. The wheat they had back then was probably much better. It hasn’t become so hybridized yet

It's an interesting book. Lots of remedies/recipes would have to modified anyways because of some ingredients, like bear fat! 🤣🧙🏼‍♀️🙏🏼💕🙏🏼

Indeed, and given that she was such an advocate for spelt which is older and less hybridized... I am curious her reason for suggesting wheat specifically in this recipe.

She seems to have been, to use modern English, a herbalist. This was not unusual for religious sisters at the time, many convents were the hospitals and pharmacies of the time, and the sisters would dispense herbal medicine to those who needed it. They knew which herbs would treat which conditions. To a lesser extent male religious orders, known as friars would also care for the sick.

Cool recipe! Do you think it would make sense to use oat flakes instead of wheat flour? 🤔

Thanks Joanna! I suppose you could, though Hildegard is very specific in her remedies, so she probably used whole wheat for a reason. But, in my herbalist opinion, oats would be better if actually making this for intestinal issues. 😊🙏🏼💕

I would just grind the oats to get a flour, she is also specific about the preparation of the grains used as I recall. Oats will absorb more water than wheat so use less. I am sensitive to wheat but can eat barley and rye, so I cannot make some these recipes the original way.

Fascinating - I would definitely try this with oats but it’s so interesting to see what the original version may have looked like. Thanks for sharing Julianne 😊 xx

This was so cool! I've been binge watching UA-cam cooking channels, and this came up in my feed. A dyi medieval medicine/spell/ show! Loved to hear Hildegards music in the background. Great production. Please do more! Did the porridge help your innards? I suppose one would need to eat it for at least a few days, I imagine.

Thank you and glad you found your way here! Well, I haven't been having intestinal issues really (one of the challenges with picking one of Hildegard's remedies was not having any of the ailments she treated a lot 🤣), but all is still good with my innards. You may want to check out my Grandma's Prosperity Cookies recipe video. 😊🙏🏼💕

I wasn't having any specific health issues. I chose this recipe because it helps a non-rare ailment (scabies, scrofula, for some rare examples) - general digestive health. So all I can say is that it digested just fine. 😉
