Rico was picked up wandering loose in the cold around New Year's, and no one came forward to claim him, so he has been safe with us with a wardrobe of sweaters. The vets estimate his age around six years old, so he's a perfect balance of activity and chill. In a foster home, he has perfect manners and is an absolute delight. However, this sweet old man came in with a pile of medical issues, which we are treating. The most obvious external issue was his total lack of hair, which exposed a massive skin infection. Dr. Pimple Popper fans will appreciate what his foster mom did daily to chip away at his hundreds of blackheads and pimples. He had three medicated baths a week, a month's worth of antibiotics, and daily applications of ResqOrganics cream. It has all made a huge difference, but there will need to be some maintenance to keep his skin clear. Also contributing to his hairlessness is a classic low thyroid and blue coat. He has been on thyroid meds and sensitive skin food, which are also helping. Rico also had a teeth cleaning with 6 extractions, and he will be neutered before adoption. We were worried about Rico having surgery because of his heart. Doberman lovers are no strangers to heart issues, and Rico has a grade 4 murmur, the beginning stages of cardio (DCM), and mitral valve regurgitation. After a month of meds, he handled sedation well. Rico is on medical hold in his foster home until then, but we are accepting donations toward his extensive care. Thanks to our Guardian Angel program, his adoption fee will be waived for the person who understands his health needs, and IDR+ will cover his heart testing and medication, so we are accepting donations to cover what we have already spent and his ongoing care. In the foster home, Rico is friendly toward the resident dogs, but he has no history with cats. He takes treats a little too enthusiastically to be a good match with kids, but he sits nicely when asked. He is enjoying a fenced yard, but he can go on leash.

My first dobey had hypothyroidism, he lost lots of hair on the top of his neck and shoulder blades. Lost weight also and generally a more nervous demeanor.
Thanks for all helping this beautiful babe, his little dongle is shaking nonstop! He deeply loves you.

I'm so happy you all found this lovely dog and saved him. I've always loved Dobermen. I would love to have him as part of my family, but financially I wouldn't be able to afford all his medical maintenance needs. I have a rescue Shih TZU and 2 cats now. My dog loves playing with other dogs and could use a playmate. He tolerates the cats, but doesn't like it when they want to nuzzle him. Which they(The cats) don't understand because they were always so close to my older Shih TZU that passed away. Funny how all animals have such unique personalities.
But I sure hope Rico continues to improve and finds a loving home if you don't keep him for yourself. You can tell he is a sweetie.
