I've been a little dissapointed with the response in this video. Please, take the points I've raised with 'a pinch of salt' instead of, in some cases, being quite rude. At the end of the day, these are points which have become known to me whilst living with the car, and the primary reason for making the video was to inform anyone who is considering buying one.
hampshirephoto the accelerator pedal has a kick down feature (mimics changing down in a manual If say you need to overtake), as do all dual clutch or auto cars, it’s only like that in D or S, if you put it in manual mode it doesn’t do it, the brake being all or nothing as you describe is adjustable via coding with VCDS, the assist can be set at strong normal or weak, this doesn’t effect the brake performance but will allow a more linear input on the brake pedal that will make it feel less abrupt! Orange peel effect on car paint (new paint in particular and not just VW) is normal/common, as you say, take the car to a good detailer and they will turn it into a glass like finish for you, a good compound polish will get most of it out but the only real way is to wet sand and that can be risky if not done by someone experienced!.
hampshirephoto hi I am looking
No to buy one can you give me some info on costs deals etc thanks
The accelerator pedal thing isn't exclusive to the golf R, it's on all of the other golfs aswell. You need to understand it's purpose dude.
The idea is that you get about max 80% throttle during normal driving, in fuel saving modes etc but at anytime if you want the full power you can press the pedal harder to get full power of the engine at anytime no matter what mode you are in, sports, eco whatever... The obvious benefit is power without messing about changing modes, I think it's a rather good idea, once you know it's purpose you will figure out how to best use it... That is why it down shifted for you to give you max power
Regarding the holes in the bumper... Your dealership did that. When you buy one, and they need to bring it into the dealer, just tell them not to drill the bumper during the pdi.
All the local dealers here in Vancouver Canada don't even mount the front plate without the buyer saying to do so. Everyone here uses either tow hook mounts or other brackets that side mount. I took the bumper off and put a bunch of neo magnets on the inside, allows me to be legal and take it off for shows.
@@cfbm125 It does it manual mode too
I wish I had a golf R to hate things about
This video was made to give potential buyers an idea of the disadvantages..
I wish I had the money to buy a Golf R to which I would use to buy a Hyundai,,, maybe 2 Hyundais :D
@@mannyechaluce3814 300 Euro per month isn't that hard 2 afford

Manny Echaluce one day you will be able too buy Porsche brother 😇😇
wow!... this video just made me more convinced about getting a Golf R... its so damn good that you have to come up with silly things not to like about it...
I would. I got a 2016 mk7 and love it. Going to Revo for stage 2 in November
@@garywhitehouse4299 i got the exact model. Did you stage 2 yet? If so how does it feel? Thanks
Golf 7.5 R owner from South Africa here. Just wanted to touch on the comment you made about the rear being bland. VW is trying to separate the Golf R from your typical boyracer type of look. I personally feel that VW's vision for the R is for it to be more of a premium hot hatchback. That is why the GTi and the GTi Clubsport exist if you want some crazy styling, especially the Clubsport.
Interesting point, thank you for raising.
It is very boring though.
Have you been car jacked yet in SA?
@@fireblade8905 lol nope. The thing is mine is Tumeric Yellow and there aren't many of them in this colour so it stands out very easily. The white and Lapiz Blue ones tend to get stolen a lot here.
@@ItzD3fW1sH I wouldn't call it boring but it's not on edge like its rivals. It's the type of car that's great when it comes to every day use and that's where it blows its rivals out of the water. Around a track, the rivals are better but you don't drive around a track every day so....
3:50 The car's stopping you from lugging the engine, it's engineered to take care of itself because owners don't know how to.
Im sorry but the cut down plates annoy me more than the holes you uncovered.
Do true
So true
I think they're illegal aren't they?
Man buys automatic car, doesn't know what kickdown is 🤦🏼♂️. Oh dear
God sometimes drops almond for those without teeth
DSG is a different kind of automatic. Here in America most our automatics are smooth. No one thinks about it.
@@Prometheus_xyz in an automatic car if your cruising at a decent speed the gearbox will go into the high gear to make up the speed and low revs. If you put your foot down the gearbox will go down a gear 'kickdown' so it's in a lower gear for more go at the speed.
These German cars r automatically controlled but Japanese cars have a manual button known as overdrive
I see Harry Potter has moved on from his broomstick.
😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Simply fix the holes in the front bumper by fitting a standard UK number plate 🤪
The "pedal limiter" is called kickdown. Its a feature for it you need to accelerate quickly, ie overtake so the car will drop gears and accelerate. If you dont want it to drop gears don't push the pedal past the kickdown
Since making the video I’ve been told what it is, but thanks for letting me know. I hope you enjoyed the video nonetheless
@@hampshirephoto fair enough bud, normally a pretty standard feature on VAG automatics, although was surprised when i found my Audi s1 had it (is manual) and is used when driving in eco mode and throttle response is limited to save fuel
Most automatic cars have it not been in any that don’t
Revo do a DSG software flash which can disable kickdown, FYI.
@@hampshirephoto i'll trade a Renault Modus with the R, same feauture & automatic ^^
1. Buys a golf.. complains it looks like a golf.
2. Complains there’s a golf on his virtual display. When he buys a golf.
3. Complains about the throttle. Goes into a high gear and then expects it to shift. Na Guy.
4. Brake pedal and pressure in traffic. Maybe buy a manual and not a DSG next time yeah?
5. Complains his common golf r has an orange peel paint job..
Bore off.
He didn't complain that there is a golf on his VD, he complained that the image isn't a Golf R, and he's right it should be - not saying it should be the exact spec with the right wheels etc but would be a nice touch.
11 months ago he complained about all the complaints.
He didn't buy a Golf,
1. He bought a Golf "R" and complained it looked like a standard Golf.
2. The vehicle is a Golf "R" and he complained a standard Golf is on his display.
3. Gearbox shouldn't be changing down for the driver automatically. Clearly the golf has no top end power and has to use some ingenuity by changing into lower gears to accelerate fast. Get in a BMW M140i and you'll notice that kickdown is not required to accelerate fast in any gear. And that is what this car competes against.
4. Brakes are very touchy in a Golf R. They are either off or on and not much between when you're going slow. It's not modulated well according to speed.
5. Orange peel on a car of this price is not acceptable from factory. Could have been a bad batch, but he is right in expecting more.
You seem to have not understood anything he said, which means you either have a comprehension problem, or you're being an absolute douche on purpose but in actuality you just made yourself look like a fool!
sAmiZZle82 you made yourself look like a fools for typing a whole ass paragraph that no one cares about 🤦♂️
@@sAmiZZle82 1. Maybe he shouldn't buy the car blindfolded next time.
I have a manual Skoda Citigo and have the same problem with the brake at low speeds. Nothing happens then all of a sudden it brakes quite sharply
Do you find the seat adjustment changes from time to time. Mine used to go higher but now does not move as high up. Your thought please. Do you know how to turn off Adaptive Cruise Control back to standard cruise without the Golf R 7.5 braking for you?
i have a golf highline and noticed the same thing with the breaking in traffic and thought it was just me - glad i’m not going crazy!! great video 👌🏽
Haha thanks Bailey!
Really nitpicking here
There's nowt wrong with the rear as it's a Golf R, not a civic Type R, not a focus RS, not a AMG 45 - if it came with a massive spoiler, i would have to rip it off. If there was carbon fibre all over it, i'd have to vinyl wrap it to gloss black........i think the real problem is that your trainers don't match the car :D
quality
Well said. This guy looks about 17 years old, just got his licence...and Daddy went out and bought the ungrateful wee shite a new motor.
blower dang that roast
if you want a factory "riced" golf, the GTI Clubsport exists.
I think you raised very good points and most of them would reflect on my GTI ownership aswell. Thanks for making it. Through test driving I found the brake a bit annoying aswell and I don't want to mess anything with the coding...
Thank you very much! I appreciate the kind comment
The 'down shift' thing you're talking about is called the 'kick down', basically you have a 'button' under the accelerator pedal and when you press into it forces the DSG to change to the lowest possible gear, it's a feature most VW group cars have, you can kinda avoid it by not fully planting it.
Thanks for the explanation buddy
I quite like the ‘blandness’ I think it’s what makes the Golf classy and understated. When most people think it’s a standard Golf to the fellow people that know it’s a Golf R with 300 plus bhp and 4 motion. I agree with the downshifting with DSG autos, I think the manual is for a more engaging drive and easy to drive smoother. DSGs seem to be suited more to fast/ motorway driving.
Lovely car & really well put together video, well done!! Not sure of the spec of your car but would like feedback on merits of DCC with/without & Performance Pack upgrade if this is something you have or considering?
Thanks Andy!!
I can’t decide between this and a focus rs! Any options?
I've just come from a manual to an automatic and I agree with you. The auto is harder to drive smoothly around town. The brakes are grabby and you can't coast to a smooth stop. But apart from that it does make driving more relaxed.
You're the only person who seems to agree with me here! Thanks hahaha
@@hampshirephoto me too
I want my time back. Was looking for real issues, apparently there are none here....
Great Video Luke. Agree with the frustrations, the Golf R is under stated and very similar to “ordinary” Golf’s. However I quite like that as I have a new Mk7.5 Estate and the look of surprise as you leave “better / faster cars” for dead is priceless!
Thanks Alan!
Hey i just wanna say that this car is one of my dream cars i own an mk5 R32 and i have the same problem in the color. I would like to add that you are right it would be amazing with a carbon lip and of course a golf R displayed and not a normal golf. Nice video definitely gonna subscribe since i'm new to your channel.
Thanks so much man! Welcome to the channel!
All or most new cars have orange peel... my ford is a similar colour and it’s one of the things I first noticed about it .. very annoying!
*that stock golf virtual cockpit image would annoy me too lol. Great content with the car mate*
Thanks mate!
How much fuel (liter) takes your golf r at 100 km if you drive "normal" ?
Great video. As an Aussie Golf R owner I have to agree with your observations (except the rear). I delt with the number plate issue by fitting Euro style plates. I also dislike the stop/start feature. That may be something to be turned off in the future.
Thanks Paul!
hey do you have any modifications done to your golf? like resonator delete or straight pipe?
I actually completely agree with point 2 - the standard Golf picture on the dash etc. It’s those little details that would have added a touch of class to the car 100%.
Plenty of nice aftermarket spoilers our there
Get your gear box remapped so you can have downshifting removed
Get the car professionally machine polished and either ceramic coated or PPF-ed should help correct the paint work.
Hate is the wrong word for a title as all your complaints wouldn’t stop me buying one. But they are all genuine “pet peeves” with the exception of braking, it’s just an art you have to learn when starting and stopping.
👌
Very fair comment, Jak, thank you :)
Can the golf r be economical if you drive it sensibly.. I'm looking to buy a golf r soon
Yes! I get 40mpg on motorways
The pedal feature is definitely frustrating, I hear you there. Especially if you are up in 3rd gear (in manual mode), get on it, and it automatically downshifts to second almost redlining... So annoying. I understand why that feature is in place but every time it happens it makes me kick myself for not getting a manual.
It’s called kick down youth! All autos do it. Certainly annoying though!
Please don't tell me what he was describing was the kick down switch - surely he is aware of that!, that's been a standard on many auto's, DSG or otherwise, since the dawn of time.
blower yep kick down in race mode, my mates 14 plate does the same
Actually I was a little relieved when I watched your video, at least the points you made. The points you made are subjective, and nothing that has anything to do with the actual functionality of the car. I say I'm relieved because I am hoping to purchase a Golf R before the end of the year. I was worried that there was some sort of deal-breaker functionality issue, but that's not the case.
Thanks Mike, you'll love it
I thought long and hard for 6 months, did the research in golf R vs BMW M240i, and now I'm a proud owner of a M240i performance edition. The Golf R in blue was my second favourite. Nice video.
What’s your thoughts on the 7 speed dsg? Mine has days of being beautifully smooth and other days trying to give you whiplash.
I haven't had any issues with it (yet!)
Great video about your golf r, perfect spec, I understand all your 5 points, but I really don't understand your paint defect?
Thanks Richy! What I mean, is the paint quality isn't very good as it doesn't give a 'mirror image'
Orange peel is an issue that I've notice, particularly on the lapiz blue - but seems to be a common theme with so many manufacturers nowadays. Dark colours like this show it the worst, white and silver hide it the best. You will find this on pretty much all OEM paint now, BMW, Mercedes - they all suffer from orange peel right outta the factory.
Get mine next week. Keep it up, its helping with the wait!
Thanks Mark! Ahhh you'll love it!!
I have a manual 3dr golf r shortly to be a lapiz blue 3dr with dsg, they are a great drive especially in the winter when the roads can be bad. The video is a bit nit picking its a golf not a ferrari.
I own same colour car I seen that thing about the paint too today and I thought it was in an accident repair lol but I’m get the whole professionally washed waxed then ppf on front end I’ll let you know how it goes
Interesting what you say with the downshifting when accelerating, I hated that in my DSG and it made me not want another! No-one else seemed to get what I was saying!
It seems everyone in my comments section doesn’t seem to understand either..!!
I would assume the kickdown feature even in manual is to protect the engine from being lugged at a higher gear with so much fuel intake.
I too know what you mean by the brake. I notice that when you're almost stopped, you slowly release the brake almost releasing it and the car comes to a complete stop nicely. Takes a while to perfect but at least there's a solution.
Thanks for the advise Aaron :)
@@hampshirephoto No worries. Just a heads up, the brake release technique only works when the car is in "D". I find that when it's in Sport, coming close to a stop will have the gearbox re-engage and cause the car to kind of launch forward a little.
Every single one of your points are ridiculously silly. I don’t think anyone knows what you mean by your “pedal limiter” I have the same car
Ryan Link indeed, man buys golf, hates it’s a golf. They’re quite dull motors anyway, a silly body kit and splitter would probably move it away from it’s mainly business type guy demographic
That unwanted kick down sounds annoying, my BMW does the same if you have it in Sport manual mode, but if it's in Sport+ manual mode the car will not change down even if you do hit that 'kick down' spot on the pedal, and will hit the limiter if you don't change up.
I own a jetta and it does the same thing with the DSG transmission why include it if it does it for you?
1 the price
2 the running costs
3 the depreciation
4 the badge
5 feeling the need to make a video?
Lol these engines have little to no running costs ime. Change the oil on time and dont treat it like shit and youll have no issues
Brofist25 sounds great no insurance or tyres etc required?
Brofist25 If I had that sort of money to spend I would have the new Civic type R.
I used to be a VW fan boy too, I’ve had 4 golfs and an Octavia VRS mk1
The Skoda was the best of the lot.
1st world problems, personally think the GTI is the better looking Golf 👍🇬🇧

Can you please tell me the exact location at the beginning of this video? Thanks
By polishing did you manage to get the orange skin from the clear coat?
5 things I should be grateful for about my golf r.
There you go I fixed your title
Appreciate your honesty mate! It's still a stunner though! Roll on April for me!!
Thanks Gareth!
Yeah the smooth driving part I experience with my GLI too.
Great video buddy. Never quite understand why people can’t just accept other people’s opinions though 😂😂😂
Thanks mate! ...Tell me about it..!! :/
Brilliant vid, always interesting to hear other people's unique opinions
Thank you very much!
Don't own a Golf R but have you tried going to manual and sports mode and then hit the kickdown and see what happens?
My Car, if you put it in sport+ and manual, for example completely ignores a kickdown and let's you decide on the gear
when you put it in reverse the golf starts 2 beep and nothing is in the way, you slowly continue 2 drive back it still beeps and all of sudden it performce a emergency brake thats something i hate had this kind of shit 3 times....
Do you agree with the points I made in this video? If you're a fellow Golf R owner and have found anymore negatives, then please let me know below! Luke :)
hampshirephoto follow Danny.svr on Instagram and he will be able to sort those numberplate holes out
As i can tell from your young apperance, you have not drove alot of cars. meaning you have no clue how a (turbo)car works (manual or dsg)!
The Golf R starts to deliver its 400NM torque from 2000rpm on up to 5400rpm. under 2000rpm the turbo is not spooling up, meaning the full power(torque) is not being produced.
While crusing lets say at 90mph with the dsg in 7th gear, the revs are around 1500rpm. When you floor the car, your telling the car "i need to go fast, now!". The car knows the that the only way i am going to be able to speed up quickly, is i am going to need more power(torque). the only way to do so i am going to need at least 2000rpm, so ill need to shift down first!
Your braking issue with the golf R, also has to do with inexperience!
@@julientaylor If your in manual mode I don't think kickdown should be a thing
@@tomp1700 ??? meaning: just because your in manual, the physics of the car dont apply? WTF
it does not matter if you drive the car with a dsg in manual or a manual gearbox, with revs @1500rpm the car is not going to give you the full power(torque).
This phenomenon not only applies to the Golf R, it applies to all combustion cars!
Bugatti Chiron: 1600NM @2000-6000rpm, meaning: you are not getting the full power(torque) @0-1999rpm
3.000.000.- € spent, no difference!
I hate the stock Golf pic in the infotainment and cluster as well. Such a tiny thing. They managed to put an R logo in there, and a 320km/h speedometer, so why not some Golf R animations. The rest doesn’t bother me... But add to you list... when running typical highway speeds in DGS sport, then kick down to pass... 1-2 second pause for the DSG to do a 7-4 shift. That’s horrible.
Orange peel pretty much present on any cars produced in high numbers. And the whole point of an automatic is that you control the gearing with how much or little pressure you apply to the pedal. Video well shot though and car looks great!
Thanks! Appreciate the kind comment
VAG orange peel is very tight though.. more so than other German brands. Oh, and the panels are weak and thin. I speak from experience.
Just got a 2016 R 6 speed and love it. Going to Revo in November for stage 2
I’m 17 about to turn 18 in a couple of months and I’ve been debating between getting a golf r and gti and idk to me the r seems like the best spec that I want to get because of the acceleration and the all wheel drive plus it’s heavier so it handles corners like a champ. But at the same time the price is ridiculous for a 2015r, when Ik I can save that money for mods on a gti but yet I don’t want to get smoked by another golf that I could’ve easily saved up for. If I can get a solid opinion that would be great !!! Great video by the way it’s helping me pick and choose the pros and cons between the two specs
I have 2016 R manual which purchased used from a dealership. My biggest complaint is 1. No spare tire..but a speaker to make fake engine noise! Ridiculous.
No storage compartment under armrest like the GTI, and the outlet for charging is under the armrest so all charging wires have to be out over the shifter...smh?
Still love the car but if I could change those things I would.
I've turned that fake noise off completely in all modes, sounds alot better
nice video as always
Thanks as always buddy!

thanks for the reply
Honest question from a potential Golf R owner, if your Golf R has Adaptive Cruise Control and Brake Hold would that make commuting much more easier? if I get one it would be the 7 speed auto. Thanks.
Yes I would say so. As a whole, the car is very easy to drive, so using it daily shouldn’t be an issue at all
@@hampshirephoto thanks for the prompt reply.
I appreciate your honesty about your Golf R, we all notice small little things about our cars that we don’t really like but are what they are, also I just love that color 😍😍😍💙💙💙
Thank you!!
Uggghhh, bored after 1:48. Bin the car then instead of producing pointless waffle because you've now changed your mind on the look of the car. Seriously!
Tough crowd today..
People are sad, the guy has a point. When you are buying the top spec Golf you are paying more money so you expect something more than just a regular Golf mk 7.
John, THANK YOU! Hahaha
I noticed the same when I had the face lift S3 no matter what it always kicks down if you plant your foot the rs3 in manual will not auto change and will also hit the limited in manual if you don’t change
What are your thoughts on the GTI tcr?
I know exactly what he means with the break pedal 😂 most german cars are made like this.
It’s a small issue but very annoying!
5 Things i hate about youtube
1. Kids getting "performance" cars on PCP
2. Making never ending youtube videos about what they like and don't like

With the accelerator pedal, is that not just 'kick-down'??
Have you tried a pedal box ? Seems ideal for that massive dead spot laying into it
1. Its a VW
2. Its a golf
3. Its a VW
4. Its a VW
5. Its not an R32
M.H.K. number 5 is an excellent point
The R32 is shite in comparison to the R. Other than the exhaust note the 32 was nothing special.
James Barlow spend 7.5R or even 7R money on a Mk4 R32 and you’ll have a faster car. Depends on what the person wants really. Rather a fairly rare car made even rarer by a 500+ setup than a pretty common car. Its what i’d do any day.
The R is a better car to live with day to day. And 15 years between the models they’ve come along really far.
@@nomessininc. You could say that about any car though. I owned a Mk4 Anniversary years ago and my current 6R batters it in every way regardless of how fast i could make a Mk4. With an old engine, old tech on a tired and dated looking model that the avg person cant use daily because of the ridiculous fuel economy and high road tax (uk) Big turbo or charger on a 32 is a proper but pointless motor. My 2 penny's worth anyway. Each to their own.
James Barlow yeah my point exactly pal. Technology has moved on so comparing the mk4 r32 and mk7 r is a fairly un balanced one. As we said depends on what the person is wanting.
Personally love the emergency acceleration, comes in quite handy when you need surge of power! For standard motorway overtakes surely can use paddles to drop a gear or leave car in auto and slightly press on accelerator it drops a gear or two ?? Fun little feature when people tailgate you on motorway 😜
200 miles to a full tank? Is that mixed driving? Also what mode would you be in?
I have a mk7 golf r 2016.... do a stage 2, makes the car amazing
Thanks for the information. I am just about to buy one. Overall For me this is the best hot hatch and value for money. Mal
Overall I love it, but thanks for taking onboard my points :)
I found your comments valid and glad you made the video. Keep it up. I had a civic type R ep3 the ride was fidgety constantly bouncing. Radio was terrible. Sound was terrible. Headlights at night was terrible. It wheelspins far too easily. A people carrier could beat you in a race on a wet road. As soon as I accelerated wheelspin again.having to Struggle to reach the seatbelt that was miles away. There was more but you get the idea.
I'm considering getting the estate. The main worry I have are carpark cockwombles dinging it. I have a 1.2 clio town runaround that is covered in scratches and dents.
I have the same issue with the paint on mine! Thought it was a bad repair at first!
About your comment regarding pedal travel, I know it's a DSG but that's only a glorified automatic and all auto gearboxes have a kick down, ie when you put your foot to the floor it drops a gear lower or two, Maybe that's what you feel?
Rude comments?: A personable person showing off your new ride...hmmm...jealousy from lesser-heeled, unhappy viewers? I find you're alert, aware and discerning. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Bryan! Thanks for commenting
I've had the car for 2 years and I had the same issue at the beginning but toy just have to get used to the break pedal
I've had the Golf R Mk7.5 since May 2017. I like the subtle look of it. When in traffic, if you engage the cruise control, the car will manage the brakes using the radar. My own things that bug me are; when the heated mirrors are on, the mirror doesn't dip in reverse (needs to point to L to drop), the reversing camera has two coloured lines which don't move, unlike most other cars. can't have the heated front windscreen on without the fan running full speed. for the paint finish, I used a ceramic coating which improves the look of the finish.
I have a MK6 Golf R and i completely agree regarding the pedal feel and downshifting early. I do find that mine also downshifts too many gears as well. I just whack it in manual mode quickly and problem solved.
Glad to see somebody agrees with me! Thanks Anthony
@@hampshirephoto No worries! Keep up the good videos man!
I’ll do my best!!
I agree about the paint. I think the same about my Lapiz blue R. VW could've sorted the cockpit image, that would've been a nice touch to finish it off. I've put an oettinger rear spoiler on mine - looks the "mutts" now. Mine is a manual, so haven't experienced the pedal issues. Personally I don't like the pretorias in black. I've got silver ones. Also don't like the look of a 5 door (mine is a 3) - the 3 door looks more "sporty" (like a Clubsport S). Each to their own though mate. I enjoyed your video. Keep 'em coming. 😁
Enjoy your videos! Subscribed.
Definitely lots of “orange peel” in VW paint. Bummer. Such beautiful colors. I think as wonderful as the DSG is, it takes lightly living with its definite quirks. I dislike the off brake (stoplights, etc.) surge. At least mine is semi-aggressive coming off of a full stop. Kinda jumpy especially for the first several miles. Other quirky scenarios, but definitely easily livable...It’s still a wondrous feat of technology.
The only thing I agree with is the paintwork, but I had my fully detailed and Kenolon ceramic coated. It made a huge difference to the paintwork and much easier to keep looking great. As for the DSG use auto in traffic and if you don't like the stop and start deactivate auto hold. As for the pedals, for me the brake got better with time and the throttle pedal has a switch at full depression similar to other autos which cause it to drop a gear. But I do absolutely love the car as a daily driver.
Is your number plate size legal? Been thinking of getting one like that for my car...
As long as spacing is correct, its legal.
100% legal.
with it jolting slightly when you brake, my guess is that up until you are almost coming to a complete stop the engine is still pushing slightly against the braking effort via the clutch. then when you're down to the last mph or so it will disengage the clutch and so suddenly the applied braking effort is enough to bring the car to a sudden-ish stop. no idea if that's true or not but it would seem logical based on my experiences elsewhere. even with normal torque converter automatics I find them challenging sometimes to bring to a completely smooth stop at low speeds because of the car's wish to eternally creep forward.
Thanks for the review. The internet trolls can be quite mean I am finding out. I posted my review of the 5 things wrong with my 2019 Jetta. It's still "2019 Volkswagen Jetta all 5 issues " it's frustrating owning a car that has issues within two months of ownership.
My guess of the jerkiness at start and stopping is the clutch engaging and disengaging. Coming to a stop with brake on, dsg clutch disengages engine, same brake force but forward force gone= jerk. Reverse applies when starting off from stand still.
Had a Golf R and now a new GTi. Difference is massive as the front wheel drive vs 4 wheel drive impacts performance and handling massively. R was also much faster and it took me a while to get used to the GTi which felt flat with no torque. Getting used to it now but miss my R massively.
Anyone know any good insurers to insure one of these? I’m 19
19?..ouch 😁
I take it this is your first auto box?
Just about all auto’s regardless of manufacturer have the switch at the end of the throttle. It’s called “kick down” to get maximum performance as soon as possible. For example over taking within a short window etc.
I have a manual mk7 version with carbon roof spoiler which I’ve paint corrected myself: 0/5 of these apply to me.
But why do all golfs lack a light to remind you you’ve left the heated mirrors on? Er... that’s about it.
You didn’t happen to come down to Costco on Regent’s Park road by any chance? Almost positive I saw (and heard) your car come through, if it was you, you had all of our heads turning in the tyre bay, we do love a Golf R :)
Hey Conor, I think I may have done actually! Thanks for letting me know haha
i just got a 7.5 in the pearl white and dont see any orange peel or haziness in the paint. the brake pedal "issue" makes me feel like im driving a race car. the understated nature of the design is what drew me to it.... traded in a mk6 drivers edition (which was great) but now feel like i have 3 times the car. i love mine....
At the end of the day it's your car, it's your opinion. I drive a GTI PP love the car but there's things I would change about it. Keep the videos coming, good work.
EXACTLY! Thank you :)
My number 1 problem with the R is that I can't always tell if it's a R or a 1.4 tsi. LOOKS THE SAME. Never know if I'll beat it or get thrashed completely.
