The Golf R for performance, looks & drive is a unbelievable car for the price/value. Cheap tax and insurance too. Never heard any bad reviews on the Golf R either!!! I have also followed Luke for a while and watched all his UA-cam videos top bloke and always replies back like yourself. 👍
@ Petrol Ped I have as a die hard Abarth and Mini enthusiast before I bought my MK7 GTI. Once I got my GTI,I haven't looked back. Seriously a superior car
Had loads of hot hatches over the years, some faster, some better handling, some better sounding but nothing does everything, every day so well for the money as a Mk 7.5 Golf R. It’s fast, practical, looks goods, fun, cheap to tax, economical and completely classless and available as a manual. I have a 911 GTS and the Golf R has that same quality and evolution feel to me as a 911. Buy one you won’t regret it.
Good review, I loved the time I spent driving a Golf R but unfortunately it was a 20 week delivery so I ended up with a Touareg which was a great machine but the Golf R is seriously entertaining
I had a 2016 GTI Performance before my 7.5 R and I think the GTI was a bit quicker and more fun through the twisty bits than the R. The R is definitely quick in a straight line but always leaves me feeling like it could use a fair bit more power.
Golfs are properly sorted cars. I've just got a GTi performance pack and am blown away by how fun it is to throw down a road. The balance and feel from the chassis is incredible.
The Golf R is quite understated to look at.... Until you hear it !. Looks and sounds really nice. I guess it also has the seats in the back for Petrol Pooch & Pup. I think by the look on your face, you enjoyed driving it.
I'm 57, and have owned a Mk2 GTI (1.8L naturally aspirated) and a Mk4 GTI VR6 (24v motor). Yes, all these decades (since 1983), I have only owned 2 cars since I first got my driver's license. I cannot say enough good things about the Golf platform in terms of practicality and reliability (at least for me). My GTI VR6 was purchased new in late 2002, so i've had this car more than 16 years, and it has been unbelievably reliable. More reliable than Japanese cars my family has owned over the years. I just change the synthetic oil and filter once a year, and changed the spark plugs at 60,000 miles. Never had to change the timing chains yet. I wax it once a year, and keep it garaged so it looks 'like new'. Even though it has only 201 HP and about 195 ft/lbs of torque, it can do 0-60 in 6.2 seconds, which is not bad for a 2003 front heavy 'hot hatch'. It drives like a sports sedan in terms of refinement and acceleration. I cannot imagine how driving a current GTI (or R) would feel compared to my 'ancient' VR6 GTI! One thing is for sure, I love the platform and pedigree of the venerable GTI! I am looking forward to the day I can purchase a new GTI or R to replace my VR6 GTI, but my guess is that won't be anytime soon!
Well Peter I think I told you over 12 months ago to mod the Mini. Lohen are the People to do your mods and would highly recommend them , you could transform it and it would be a completely different car with mods to engine suspension without the extra expense of buying a new car 👍 I await the modifications to begin😀
I just picked up a 2019 with a bunch of APR tuning installed. It's with a mechanic friend getting sorted out. I pick it up next week. I can't wait! I had a Mk5 R32 and I miss it dearly. I hope to get that itch scratched.
I was smiling all through the video. I've been subbed to both of you a short while now and this was an excellent collab. Cheers, Robster. [With his lowly mildly modded derv Monte Carlo lol]
He’s gotta drive a well sorted M140i, If he cares about the ‘driving experience’.. which I see that he does. He’ll definitely love it. Great video, as always!! 🤩
I knew you'd like the Golf R it does represent better value for money and I recognize the dash cam which is the Thinkware F770. Brilliant bit of kit. I should know because I have one.
Idk why but I got a crazy crush on the golf isn't one of those cars I wished I could have it it's one of those cars that I will have in my garage ..just crazy about the car 😝❤💯💯

A 2.3 St sounds nice. Only issue I have with fords is their sync and interior. I'd let a fiesta st200 at get away with the poorer interior, less so the dearer focus st. Ford and Vx are way behind the curve.
Don't forget it's sooooo cheap putting a Stage 1 tune on the Golf R and end up with close to 400hp. The Golf R ticks every box, practical, fun to drive, great handling, carries 5 people, great seats, quick acceleration, large boot.
Golf R - well built, well equipped, very fast, perfectly livable, ruthlessly efficient, but the driving experience lacks something intangible, the driver engagement is just not quite there.
Went off the boil fun wise since the mk5 gti. I know it's not the same comparison but I took a mk7 gti for a test drive and the steering was all light and no feel. I asked the sales guy if there was a sports mode, at which point he informed me it was already engaged. My mk5 had a devilment to it that was severely missing in the mk7. I assume its the same problem with the R. Im not being funny, but the two in this video clearly don't like driving thrills, they drive automatics ffs! Refined and classy cars, yes, but no longer exciting to drive. They've become middle class white guy cars.
Golfs in general are hard to fault as an overall car and golf r is the best golf you can buy. You can always remap it without any other mods should make about 370-380 bhp
I had the same issue with the build date for my S3 I ordered in July 2018 got an email in December to say the car hopefully was being built the following week and it arrived first week in January and the dealer never did receive a build date or delivery date from Audi uk
Looking for your opinion. Youve driven a Golf R, aS4 B8.5 and a 435d. Which would you say was the best all rounder in terms of general fun and as a daily. Looking for a car with a bit of a split personality. With kids and commuting during week and country lanes at the weekend.
For me the S4 every day of the week. A brilliant car. Hugely practical and when you want to go fast it delivers on every level ! The B9 is even better 👍
Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately my budget will not stretch to a B9. 20k to 22k stretching. Unfortunately the uncertainty of brexit is making me hold fire on any fianance/loan options, but i can still look.
@@PetrolPed they nickname it the "mini-RS6" I was with mine on a mostly Audi event and even the Audi owners were confused. It is the same chassis and engine/gearbox combination of the Golf R, but as an estate, in a much more appealing look than the dreadful Golf R estate.
I had a focus rs mk 3 which you mention has more power 345bhp, compared to the 306 golf r. But i have the r estate now, and trust me it's quicker accelerating than the rs. Even the estate weighs less than the rs, let alone the hatch r. But mainly its because of the dsg, can't underestamate the ability an auto has to hold boost inbetween changes
Well, Pete, interesting expressions on your faces. If I had to get rid of my S3 for a Golf R I would not be disappointed. Incidentally, Audi have just restarted selling the S3 again but it has lost 10 PS due to emissions. I wonder if VW will be doing the same.... Cheers as always👍🏼
Mini's are awesome little cars and very tuneable. I've had two myself (Cooper and Clubman JCW). A simple remap transforms them. However, RS3 is one of my favourite cars so s tough one.
Keep the Audi S4 as that's a great size and then mod the Mini with a LSD etc as it's a great B road car. Why have two cars that are "AWD"? If you are looking at used cars, BMW M135/140i + LSD from Birds etc.
It looked like you were having a lot of fun in the Golf. Might be more "practical" than the Mini...not that "practical" is what the Mini or Golf are made for. You might have to arrange for an extended test of a similar car in the future ... ;)
Having just been able to get my JCW Coupe back after selling it in 2015, I think you'll regret saying good bye to the Roadster. My other car is an M140 and its definitely the JCW that gives more smiles for miles, but the M140 us just a mental machine, that needs to be treated with respect. I say go for the modify he MINI option, as you said previously its 1 of 300(ish)!
Hey, maybe someday (a Mini) will hit 0-60 mph in under 6 seconds? But, I doubt it.. And if it does, it's going to mean putting an engine in it.. And, it's not going to be cheap...
I don’t know, with the greatest respect for these type of cars, I think they are quite soulless. Now Mr JWW has been getting great view figures with his modern classic series. I think a modern classic would generate lots of interest, something like a 996 Porsche or something even older. They don’t fall off a cliff so much with depreciation and generate lots of interest. Just a thought. 😁
Just noticed at 6:53. You don't drive a car, much less a 322 BHP car, with two fingers resting on the steering wheel and the other arm resting on the door top.
Hi Pete. Enjoyed the video as usual and fully understand why you wanted to try one but as others have said, the Golf R is far to similar to your Audi in the performance department. Maybe if you had tried the R before you purchased the Audi you could have saved yorself a little money and purchased the R instead. If you want a real performance car have your friends find you a nice mint Nissan GTR " Now your talking " These cars are very special with very few rivals in the performance department without spending an absolute fortune. I suspect though that this type of vehicle like the Civic Type R is too much in your face for your taste. Whilst on the other hand the Golf R might be very competent, it doesn't really stand out enough for many people even less so than the Golf GTI which seems to have a better image even though much lower performance .I actual think Volkswagen missed a trick with the Golf R and should be marketed it as "The" Golf GTI (tartan seats and all) Its nice to dream though lol!!!. Best of luck Pete.
Have been struggling to decide what I want more, the I30N ir Golf R. If the I30N had the same BHP it might not be a contest but ug seems 4x4 and automatic gearbox is the way to go too
Golf R sounds Too Harsh, but boy when Luke floored your S4 the noise it made is so much nicer & smoother like he says. the only thing that beats them both is that RS3 5pot! & iam sure you will know that more than me... as for what to do with your Mini ive no idea....... Such a shame Audi cannot supply you with one..... how weird is that..... maybes there is a rep on its way sooner then we all think.... Great Video tho & Now i'll have to watch Luke's channel.... Thanks PP 10/10
Personally its so similar to your s4 in terms of both german, both flappy paddles etc. In my opinion isnt it better to have 2 cars that are different? So a proper manual box etc. Just my opinion.
Cannot see the point in getting anything less than something special unless it is going to be a daily considering you already have the S4. The Golf R is a good car but unless you want it as a second practical daily I not sure why as you already have a cracking 4wd with a decent boot for the dog :-) . Being me I'd consider boost the Mini a bit and have some fun.
I’m thinking you’re getting further away from your first choice Peter. No disputing Lohen would do an excellent job on Ruby, & the way both the Roadster & Coupe are dropping in value maybe that’s worth pondering over, but are you going to end up with a car that’s strictly going to be a weekend or track car ? I have a very nice GP2 for sale if you’re interested (lol !! ). Good luck whatever you decide on, I just don’t think the Golf R as good as it is would be a future collectible that is going to hold its price, it’s not exactly exclusive. See ya next time...... Geof
Petrol Ped Hmm, I’ll be keeping an eye out for upcoming news on that Peter. I haven’t seen any indications on pricing for the GP3 but I’m thinking it’s going to be expensive. I’m looking for around 20K for my GP2 with 25,000 miles on the clock , if I can’t sell privately I’m going to trade it in against a Cayman. Moral of the story - falling off a ladder takes the fun out of your life !!
Excellent video. Golf R is a lovely car but they don't do anything for me unfortunately but as you really love your Mini I think some mods would be a great idea and would be really interesting to see what you could add to it.
The Audi build configurator in Germany went live again this week for RS cars and I understand that the UK goes live next week and, surprisingly, the RS3 is still on it given the new A3 launches any day now. The Golf R is a great alternative though for lots less cash although the extra 100 ponies in the Audi does make a massive difference.
Hi Peter, Is the golf R a Full time 4 wheel drive or uses the heldex system like some Audi’s have but what a great little car. Great video Alan B 😀 P.S I don’t think a Golf R is the best car for you why not play with the mini then wait until they open the order books on the Audi RS3 let’s face what do you have to lose here plus you can save some pennies.
Hi Peter, as I said the is no hurry the is no point purchasing a car that would only be ever second best plus they are not cheap just take your time and wait it out mate and get the car that pulls at your heart strings yes that feeling you get when you now it’s for you. Best wishes Alan B 👍
Hi Ped Next car choice, are you still thinking sensible & practical ? If so it has to be the Golf R (and as you know I am an Audi man) However if you are straying from the brief surely the Cayman fits the bill. Interesting point raised which I do agree, for every day Road use I think 300/340bhp is ideal sweet spot. Enjoy the sunshine the other side of the pond even if you are working.
I recently drove the new 2019 Seat Leon Cupra 290. Essentially the same underpinnings as the Golf R. Minus the 4wd. Personally I think the Cupra is the better car. Interior is a bit nicer, and Budget wise, its certainly better value.
@@PetrolPedSurely that's just a bad suspension setup. I have a 96 Saab 9000 2.3T Aero tuned to 310bhp at the wheels, and that doesn't tramp. It just goes like stink.
If you already have some poshier representative car, like someone having bigger Audi S, or 911 etc, a golf R for everyday use is surely a serious choice. For myself, in the need for a single everyday car, I choose an S3. Same as R, little more refined. But little less practical (less places to hold objects). Shame on new A3s, really planning to keep my S3 for long time. Can't see some serious quality substitute (price wise). Cheers! Appreciated your video
You say you wanted the performance of the rs3 then that the Golf R was alot cheaper than the rs3. Then you mentioned modding a mini. Why not mod a Golf R. I think the Golf R is a good candidate for an engine tune as it changes the character to be more like a Rs3 or a "mini GTR" dsg. A stock R maybe too similar to a GTi in character. Just an opinion from a fellow shopper.
I've got an 11 plate a3 with the 2.0tfsi engine. Done a resonator delete and my god does it transform it. If you've already got an s4. Why would you want an rs3? I reckon you buy an out and out sports car. Either to modify or just enjoy stock

I like your thinking Graham 👍
Lol. So. What you done to it. Well Fred. I eBay upgraded it. Carbon clip on panels and a plastic spoiler.
I bet that added the extra 22 bhp.
Excellent car and video, but the the roof doesn't go down. Practicality with the S4, go the impractical route.
I like your thinking 👍
I'd love a GTR...awesome things !
Have been struggling to decide what I want more, the I30N ir Golf R. If the I30N had the same BHP it might not be a contest but ug seems 4x4 and automatic gearbox is the way to go too
I love the Audi RS3 but how under the radar an Golf R is,.. seals the deal for me.
The delay in Audi build slots is due to the engine not being compliant with the emissions regulations !
Personally its so similar to your s4 in terms of both german, both flappy paddles etc. In my opinion isnt it better to have 2 cars that are different? So a proper manual box etc. Just my opinion.
I agree. Watch this space !
Never before did you see a fuel gauge needle head south so quickly.
LOL !
I know that estate - some friends live there, and I rebuilt my Defender in a barn there.
Used Boxster S and roof down if Ruby has to go!
Summer is on it's way too:)
Good plan 👍
That's why a s4 beat me one day grrrrr it was a 2014 so not sure of the power but by 100 he was a car infront
I think that is what I'm going to do. 260bhp Stage 1 remap and coilovers !
Geof
I'd absolutely LOVE a GP2. Between you and me I am talking to Mini about getting my name down for a GP3 😜
Petrol Ped
Hmm, I’ll be keeping an eye out for upcoming news on that Peter.
Awesome vid🔥🙌🏽
Cheers 👍
Google maps on Virtual copkit? 16:30 is this true or trolling?
Excellent video. Golf R is a lovely car but they don't do anything for me unfortunately but as you really love your Mini I think some mods would be a great idea and would be really interesting to see what you could add to it.
I think that's the way I'm gonna go :-)👍
The Audi build configurator in Germany went live again this week for RS cars and I understand that the UK goes live next week and, surprisingly, the RS3 is still on it given the new A3 launches any day now. The Golf R is a great alternative though for lots less cash although the extra 100 ponies in the Audi does make a massive difference.
The TT RS will start taking orders by the End of April and the RS3 will come before that apparently 👍
I fancy waiting for the Mini GP3 😜
Hi Peter, as I said the is no hurry the is no point purchasing a car that would only be ever second best plus they are not cheap just take your time and wait it out mate and get the car that pulls at your heart strings yes that feeling you get when you now it’s for you. Best wishes Alan B 👍
Hi Ped
Next car choice, are you still thinking sensible & practical ? If so it has to be the Golf R (and as you know I am an Audi man)
However if you are straying from the brief surely the Cayman fits the bill.
Interesting point raised which I do agree, for every day Road use I think 300/340bhp is ideal sweet spot.
Enjoy the sunshine the other side of the pond even if you are working.
Cheers Philip 👍
M140i shadow edition car you should get.
Need to drive one of those 👍
I recently drove the new 2019 Seat Leon Cupra 290. Essentially the same underpinnings as the Golf R. Minus the 4wd. Personally I think the Cupra is the better car. Interior is a bit nicer, and Budget wise, its certainly better value.
I need to try one then !
Does it tramp then ? That is mu issue with the i30N too !
@@PetrolPedSurely that's just a bad suspension setup. I have a 96 Saab 9000 2.3T Aero tuned to 310bhp at the wheels, and that doesn't tramp. It just goes like stink.
Here is my scenario.. Cant decided between Audi S3, GolfR or a BMW 340xi used 17's???? Anyone with a opinion on this?
If you already have some poshier representative car, like someone having bigger Audi S, or 911 etc, a golf R for everyday use is surely a serious choice. For myself, in the need for a single everyday car, I choose an S3. Same as R, little more refined. But little less practical (less places to hold objects). Shame on new A3s, really planning to keep my S3 for long time. Can't see some serious quality substitute (price wise). Cheers! Appreciated your video
My pleasure 👍
You say you wanted the performance of the rs3 then that the Golf R was alot cheaper than the rs3. Then you mentioned modding a mini. Why not mod a Golf R. I think the Golf R is a good candidate for an engine tune as it changes the character to be more like a Rs3 or a "mini GTR" dsg. A stock R maybe too similar to a GTi in character. Just an opinion from a fellow shopper.
Yep, certainly an option worth considering 👍
Try golf r estate
Are you going to consider the Hyundai i30n? Maybe even the Fastback N
Hoping to get a Fastback from Hyundai UK in the next month of so 👍
You know what I'm going to say ... keep Ruby!
Don't worry 😜
Would you try out a honda civic type r?
Reviewed the current and previous Type R already. You should find them on my page ?!
I've got an 11 plate a3 with the 2.0tfsi engine. Done a resonator delete and my god does it transform it.
If you've already got an s4. Why would you want an rs3?
I reckon you buy an out and out sports car. Either to modify or just enjoy stock
That is kinda what I thinking 😜
