a buddy of mine bill.B from whirlybird videos gave me one of these. this was quick and easy build. this was my first wing. I put blue leds on one side and white on the other and it lights up like a lantern. I slapped a 3700 battery in the front went out to the field threw it in the air I must say this was probably my most uneventful maiden ever it tracked through the air like an arrow. before the first battery was out I was doing flybys less than two foot from me and a foot of the ground which is something I never do. this plane is confidence inspiring. guys thanks for all the work you put into designing and making build videos and everything you do. the ft wing is now my favorite plane
FliteTest has always been about exposing people to the hobby and bringing it to the masses and the swappable series does just that which is why it is such a focal point. If all you want is reviews then just hunt around youtube there are already plenty out there but FliteTest does still do them.
Your battery-story makes me remember sth that happened to my GF in the early 2000s. We were repairing wind turbines (32m hub height - they were already old). I was on one and she was on the one next to it. She dropped an allen key. So she had to climb to the ladder, climb the ladder down, search for the allen key, climb the ladder up and back to her working place. When she arrived about 20 minutes after she dropped the allen key at the screw she noticed the allen key had a different size than the one she dropped. So she had to go again for another 20 minutes.
i have found with a puffer battery like that if you cut a little of the covering from the batt. you can use a hobby knife to barely pierce the foil shell around each cell. then squish the battery back to the original shape and a tiny dot of hot glue to seal the battery cells. i works and as long as you get the glue into the tiny hole the battery is still safe... i actually found this idea on youtube... nice build.
The torque cause by the prop would give it an inclination to "barrel roll" if anything. Angling the prop would not compensate for this, and would actually be counter productive because it would translate the torque to not be in line with the standard roll axis, making compensation and control much more difficult. In a single prop craft, it is just accepted. In a dual prop though, it can be compensated for by having the props rotate in opposite directions, which is what quadcopters do.
Do like I did. Print it off in your computer. Cut it out and tape it together. I put my plane together for around 6 dollars. So if you think a kit is too expensive do like me. You also learn more.
ther can be difrend resons for that, check the esc's simeller programed , check the wireing the connetions between moter and esc , folowed up by a range check of the throtel , so the board knows the beginneng and the max , then check for the gyro is it good ore in rev , go a bit lower on the gains , so it doesend want to over compensait , make sure all moters ar runing in the good direction , and the airflow is the same ( no objects ther ) and the landing gear doesend hook in to the ground :)
first check motor layout, escs plugged into correct outputs and prop directions. if all ok you may need to reverse gyro on the axis it tries to flip. ie. if it wants to flip on pitch axis, go into mixer editor, ch2 for elevator, change elevator ch from 100 to -100 or vice versa. they usually come set up ok for a quad. good luck :)
Just flew my first one I built from the free online plans, very easy to fly for a Quadcopter pilot with very little fixed wing experience. Added a lot of weight to the nose ( I put 38 caliber lead bullets in play doh and stuffed that into the nose). I'm going to order the pre cut mini arrow to thank them.
Spongebhoy I used 2 sheets, but if you have to order foam board I would get more to save on shipping Im lucky I can buy that board right down the street.
The "selling" let's them bring the hobby to new people and help further the hobby. Besides, all the plans are free if you feel like just making it yourself.
love the videos keep them Coming! With versa wing would it be overkill to add more than 2 motors? Is there a power chart I can look at to find the max output?
Hej guys! Thank you very much for this nice model! I built it last month and would like to ask a question about the best anglr for the ailerons: What is the best angle the ailerons should be put for flying horizontaly? And what is the best mininum and maximum angle? My pusher wing seems to be vety pitchy and it is hard to control. Thanks, Bjoern
Three late thoughts: First, try to throw the thing by hand until it glides, most deltas need some up-elevator at neutral to glide. Second, centre of gravity sounds too far back, try adding nose-weight, taping-on one coin at a time. Third, add 30% exponential to elevators (and 'ailerons')
For this setup do you guys just power your video transmitter thorugh the same battery for the motor? If so maybe you guys could show a video of how you do that :) Great vids by the way ive learned so much!
After building the Versa Wing and installing my motor in the pusher format, I cant help but realize how difficult it was to get the CG right. The CG on the plans were too far back for me as well. With a 2200 sitting horizontally in the nose and my esc up front as well, I still had to add 30 grams to the nose to get it to fly right. All that weight has really cut down on speed though. With a 3000 kv motor drawing 550 watts, im only going about 75mph.... Id suggest setting up the tractor format!
Hey. I know it's been 10 years but I'm busy finishing my versa wing and wow trying to balance it is a mission. I'm thinking of making a nose box to hold the battery in. Else I'll have to stuff a bunch of sinkers into the nose. Any advice you might have for me. Im a relative rookie, this is my 3rd plane in building.
Blast from the past here. If i remember correctly, I never really got this to fly all that well in comparison to some other builds. Really struggled with CG and weight. If you already have the wing built, Id suggest making a square tube with all the electronics that you can just rubber band to the bottom of the wing. I found much better success building armin wing desins from Experimental Airlines. If you're looking for a good swept wing design, I suggest the Synapse. Good luck! @@Michael-nu6fb
I just left a suggestion on making a motor mount without the plywood on the forum: Forum->RC Airplanes (Electric)->Delta and Flying Wings->Versa Wing Motor Mount Suggestions. Sorry It won't let me post a link.
I'm a newbie. So I'm really trying to follow your directions on video, but I don't see this part. My question is : Where do you put the radio receiver with no FPV? Does it (the entire receiver) go inside the wing? Does it kinda get buried behind the battery? Thanks Edythe
I really really hope you guys figure out a way to ship to europe fpr cheap!! I think you should setup shop in sweden when david returns, then he could import foamboard, cut and package the models and ship them to europian customers! I love your plans but having to pay 40 $ for shipping kinda ruins it for me
Dear Josh Bixler, I've always been wondering since the beginning of the swappable series what program you use to make the swappables (Sketch up? 123D? ETC?)
Hello, Thanks, Could you please give me a link, and at the start of the video, Josh said they give away the motor mount to the first 250 packs sold, I purchased it right when the video of the Versa Wing came out, so, I would probably get it? Thanks, -Peter
Hey guys. What about a flying De lorean. There is this channel ( native118) he build a de lorean just like the back to the future one. Very detail too. Check the cancel please & make a build out of this. It looks like a fun one. Big fan.
if I put the battery underneath the fuselage would it effect the CG much? I would still balance it obviously but I was wondering as the weight would be lower.
+Oliver Ward The difference on this particular plane wouldn't do much, however yes, the lower weight technically will give the plane so self stabilizing capabilities.
Avid Builder here, but never built a Flying Wing. I hear mention a number of times about the importance of proper CG on this Plane and I know You already have the CG marked for easy balancing, As a First Time Flying Wing Builder, I'm hoping someone knows of, or can direct Me to a link that shows how to calculate where the CG should be on say a Homebrewed Flying Wing, what would be the Formula for Calculating the CG? Anyone? :)
Cutting into the spar is not awkward. It is incorrect, not advisable, or just wrongo.O Walking through a crowded shopping mall and having your pants fall down would be awkward ;) Leave that kind of "English" to the pre pubescent. Love the video and build btw!
Guys, you never showed me where to place the receiver. I waited and waited, but you never touched on it. I'm a noob, I'm stuck. I've spent 6 hours of my Sunday building my wing. Where does it go?
Does not mater. Anyplace that all the servo wires and throttle wire from ESC can reach it. I would put it right inside that hole on the bottom. You some times have to switch servo wires while setting up delta mix on your radio so be sure its correct before you seal it up.
Also, if you are doing an fpv configuration, you would like to put video tx and radio rx as far as you can from each other. So in this video, at min. 11:30 you can see both anthenas, one on each wing. One wing for Video transmitter, and on the other side of the wing the Radio receiver.
see your radio manual for better instructions or see the DX5e manual online but one goes to aileron and one to elevator inputs. then make sure your radios delta mix function is on. then test and if the proper movements can not be achieved with reversing switches then switch the two servo leads and then the reversing switches will give you the movements you need!
hey guys i need some help, I bought the FT VERSA WING POWER/ELECTRONICS PACK "THE BEEF from lazertoyz and i have no idea how to mount the motor. it doesn't have any instructions. I have tried to put it on but i just cant figure it out.
It's too bad that you see it that way. Out of the last 15 videos, only 6 have been "selling" related. It's too bad you can't be supportive to the new people who need the information Flite Test provides, which they are able to provide for free only by selling the kits. They also publish the plans freely for the kits they sell, just so those that choose, can just build rather than buy.
i would like to by a plane but they are so expensive and i would like to start my first scatch build from precut foam because i would make less mistake so i think you guys at flitetest should go cheaper and stop telling me you saved money on your website because i hate when companies say "retail price and sale price" and the difference is some crazy 500 dollars its just stupid because i am not saving money when i spend 40 on a foam kit
incorrect you CAN use the same prop, just reverse it so the numbers face forward, and reverse the motor rotation. The ONLY reason props come in RH and LH rotation is for multi-rotors

The motor he's using is a NTM Prop Drive Series 28-26A 1200k. You can juuust make out the markings at around 2:27.

Josh & David; Really Great Job on the pusher Wing & the review on how to build it ! Got me convinced on buying it & building it!
Aerotech Hobbies is in Canton Ohio.....I used to live there! Small world guys! I knew there was something I liked about you guys!

Dont do whatever that metod was since its really risky....btw the gas inside is toxic and may provide to suffocation
Same for Australia -- wish there was options for slower (cheaper) shipping, otherwise thanks guys - always enjoy the videos. cheers
Just in time I just started building my Versa Wing today and wanted to make it a Pusher
Me too

dwayne willis what motor did u use?
Turnigy D2826-6 2200kv with a Master air screw 8x4 prop.
dwayne willis how much foamboard did you need? i dont want to order some the not have enough.
Spongebhoy I used 2 sheets, but if you have to order foam board I would get more to save on shipping Im lucky I can buy that board right down the street.
dwayne willis what size were the sheets? were they a3?
I love your shows. It give me so many idea on making quadcopter. Can you come out a water proof quad design?
Check your gyros are in the right direction. Otherwise it will try to correct tipping to one side by thrusting more to that side and flipping over.
Can you allow them to support the show in order to keep it running and bring us the videos and inspiration that we want to see?!
id love to see one that you guys lit up with LED's... Josh said they glow like laterns... he must have built one :) can we see it please

Forum->RC Airplanes (Electric)->Delta and Flying Wings->Versa Wing Motor Mount Suggestions.
Sorry It won't let me post a link.
With those parts being laser cut, would it be an idea to sand/rub off the black charred bit so you'll get a stronger fit?
You guys should do some multi rotor builds, I. E. DJI F450 -F550.
:)

Yeah it can be inside the wing itself, depends on the reciever mainly...
hi guys, I think your videos are the best, I want to build that flying wing with pusher method where can I buy the kit im from canada , thanks
My wing keeps going up and down in flight and hard to keep control. Where do I need to place my battery?

And like he said if its turning the wrong way change one of the esc connectors
Dear Josh Bixler,
I've always been wondering since the beginning of the swappable series what program you use to make the swappables (Sketch up? 123D? ETC?)
will it rork with power pod turned around and pin it like the old fogy power pod .. or will it not work with motor on bottom side in back
I like the NTM's, but I'm more accustomed to the 50-60 370KV. Not for airplanes tough.
Almost done with my PDF plan build. Then zoom zoom!
Isn't it already up for download on the site?
set up a shop in Australia too.
Hello,
Could you please put up plans on the pusher firewall?
Thanks,
-Peter
Even on pavement, I have not gotten more than a small scratch on the tips. Just cut the motor a little before touch down!
Hello, Thanks,
Could you please give me a link, and at the start of the video, Josh said they give away the motor mount to the first 250 packs sold, I purchased it right when the video of the Versa Wing came out, so, I would probably get it?

difference putting the motor at the front or at the back of the plane ?
Hey guys. What about a flying De lorean. There is this channel ( native118) he build a de lorean just like the back to the future one. Very detail too. Check the cancel please & make a build out of this. It looks like a fun one. Big fan.
Id like to use my old drone hardware to make a wing, can I just use my drone props/motors? Or would that be too much torque?
the ft mini series use a 250 size quad motor i believe.
The foamboard is without paper?
I make this plane and is very heavy
thank you so much !!!! i love your videos :D sincerely from malaysia
with the hexTronik 24gram Brushless Outrunner 1300kv motor, what battery do you recomend?
if I put the battery underneath the fuselage would it effect the CG much? I would still balance it obviously but I was wondering as the weight would be lower.
+Oliver Ward The difference on this particular plane wouldn't do much, however yes, the lower weight technically will give the plane so self stabilizing capabilities.
+Zeptonite OK cheers good to know
Does anyone have any experience building this with 6mm depron. Thats all I have available. Also would it not make sense to insert a carbon spar.
will these fly with 2205 2300kv motors with 3x props or 4x?
hi. can anyone tell me the point of centre of gravity without the gopro? great vid, thanks a bunch.
It's the same, with our without a gopro, the CoG wont change.
the CG wont change its a set place but you move your components around to make it balance when u set it on cg
2712-12 24g "Blue Wonder"
With brushless do you use in this setup?
If running a gopro on this build is leaving the housing on going to be too much weight?
most likely
Should is use 6mm depron or 3mm depron?
Depron is a sort foam in the netherlands
+Jorrit Hil i got 6mm depron but you have to be carefull with the cuts of the bends
We're u guys get your kits laser cut? Or what machine you use?
Nearly every other build vid Bixler has a new hotglue gun xD
Hi guys, what flight time are you getting on this with the 2200mAh 3S?
? Is the centre of gravity/balance marked on the plans by the little circles ?
I really hope so, I just built mine had to make a little extended nose for the battery for CG reasons....
i love you guys, thanks for all your help (y)

all I keep hearing is keep it a little nose heavy, but I have two wing kits from FT and they both came with data sheets with the CG measurements.
I found this Flying Wing Calculator, Great for Us Scratch Builders, works for Me.. ;)

it doesnt need power pod so its can co faster right
How did the wing fly with the 3000 mAh?
so where should i place my controller resiever if i'm not gonna make it fpv?
is iy possable to make a rc plane with a weedeater engin and lawnmower
You guys rock! Thanks!!!
Wish I could subscribe twice to compensate for the ridiculous people that unsubscibe for absurd reasons !
Im new to fpv so can someone tell me what they use to transmit the video from the gopro and how they set it up.
what foam did you use and can I fly this with a trigger wheel transmitter
+MEGATRONBEZ117
I can't see how you're going to control pitch and roll with a wheel. Just buy an OrangeTX or a second hand DX6i to start with.
I wonder how difficult it would be to convert this to a top-mount EDF?
***** That's awesome LOL!
Lol, that'll be a while. I've never built anything like this.
Guys, you never showed me where to place the receiver. I waited and waited, but you never touched on it. I'm a noob, I'm stuck. I've spent 6 hours of my Sunday building my wing. Where does it go?

see your radio manual for better instructions or see the DX5e manual online but one goes to aileron and one to elevator inputs. then make sure your radios delta mix function is on. then test and if the proper movements can not be achieved with reversing switches then switch the two servo leads and then the reversing switches will give you the movements you need!
awesome! exactly what i needed.
what set up for the motor and esc is he using
How often do the props break on a belly landing? Seems like you will always be replacing props... Anyone?
I think one side of the motors aren't as fast, either that or it's out of balance.
Whats the motor and Prop used in this video?
hey guys i need some help, I bought the FT VERSA WING POWER/ELECTRONICS PACK "THE BEEF from lazertoyz and i have no idea how to mount the motor. it doesn't have any instructions. I have tried to put it on but i just cant figure it out.

Wts the thickness of the foam board
what is the motor you are using???
Can any motor be used as a pusher motor?
Does anyone know where to get 10x4.5 pusher props?
so what if I jumped the gun and bough 4 7x5's?
?which motor i need to the pusher conversion
what is the motor, and prop set up in there
what is the name of that motor he is using?
Sweet!
Sort out your shipping to the EU guys. Im dying to order morw planes.
i would like to by a plane but they are so expensive and i would like to start my first scatch build from precut foam because i would make less mistake so i think you guys at flitetest should go cheaper and stop telling me you saved money on your website because i hate when companies say "retail price and sale price" and the difference is some crazy 500 dollars its just stupid because i am not saving money when i spend 40 on a foam kit
what motor and props are in this video.
Looks like a NTM 28-26 1200kv, not sure what prop but I think its an 8''
i ended up getting the laser toys 'the beef' which is now on the FT-22.. then from what others mentioned in the forums i got a 2826-2200KV
how did that work, was it enough power?
Firewall link does not work ..
what's the board name?
Did your glue gun die?
incorrect you CAN use the same prop, just reverse it so the numbers face forward, and reverse the motor rotation. The ONLY reason props come in RH and LH rotation is for multi-rotors
