Why I Was Concerned About Solas In Dragon Age: The Veilguard But Now Not

  • I love the gameplay reveal that Bioware showed us for Dragon Age Veilguard. But while I loved it I had a concern with the direction they are taking with Solas. It felt like they killed him so that he can be "redeemed". But after thinking about it and talking with people in my comments I can see that the direction they chose for him makes total sense.
So, join me as I discuss why I was concerned about Solas.

I just want to see as many outcomes as possible so everyone would be satisfied. I personally want to tear down the Veil and open the path to a new world full of magic.
I'm also interested to see how Solas manipulates Rook into achieving his goals secretly... I want to see his brilliant mind in action😅

@@YurateYurate how I think about what choices should be like is that the choices are in line with the game's greater story or themes. So, I would love if Veilguard had choices like that. And I think having the option to tear the Veil down would be an excellent choice because it would make so much for us to make.
Also I would love to see how Solas will manipulate us. It will be very cool.

I love the direction they're taking Solas' storyline. He's such a complex character (hats off to the writers ... esp. Trick Weekes who has always written Solas). The devs have said that whether people love Solas or hate Solas, they'll get a satisfying ending to his storyline. Plus, the way they've worked the story in The Veilguard, players will get to know Solas better (maybe changing the players minds one way or the other along the way). Heck, we inhabit his hideout. I think this all makes the complexity of his character & our relationship to him deeper & the choices more meaningful.

I completely agree. I didn't think it was a great direction at first but I realize this is the best for the player and Solas' story. I look forward to how we can interact with him and see what interesting choices come about from it.

I think they'll do well with him. They've said they think it will be a satisfying conclusion to your Inquisitor's relationship with him either way. As someone who romanced him, I'm nervous, but I think they'll do it justice.

The way the developers talked about it in the interviews has me seeing Solas as a Jonny Silverhand type character and Rook as V. Given how manipulative Solas can be (having watch Lady Sulevin's analysis of Solas' character only reinforced my view of him) I think this could be a very interesting route to take with the story. I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out and how Solas and my Rook(s) get react to each other.

While I get the comparisons of Johnny Silverhand I don't think they are that similar beyond being ghosts in the protagonists. Silverhand is not in an antagonist role and additionally is just an AI. While Solas is in an antagonistic role and is a spirit. Also Solas, as you said, is very manipulative. So, will most likely try to hinder Rook in stopping his plans.

I think Solas remains Solas. He has the power to insta-kill anyone and doesn't use it. He talks instead. That says plenty.
I would say his ridiculous level of power is a good reason to remove him from the "enemy" role at the start of the game, until "team goodies" level up and find some mcguffins.
I hope and expect that he is the final boss, after the two elven gods have been dealt with.

At the end of Trespasser I was wondering how exactly are they gonna have us defeat Solas. And the way they did it is really clever but also adds this layer of uncertainty. His he actually finished? Or his he buying his time? And when the other elven gods are defeated he will then strike and finish tearing down the Veil. I hope something like that happens.

One plot point from Trespasser I'm wondering whether they are going to address or not is that fact that Solas wasn't acting alone, he had amassed quite a following of disillusioned elves who could act as spies and infiltrators, its one of the reasons why keeping the Inquisition around even as Divine Victoria's honor guard was considered a risk, because Solas's agents could potentially infiltrate them. I think that's probably one of the reason why Varic reaches out and works with the factions that Rook can be from, because there's less of a risk that Solas's agents have infiltrated them.

    • @Knight1029
      @Knight1029  Місяць тому +2

I wonder that to. I think its safe to say that Solas will try to advance his plans while he is still a ghost with his remaining agents. Solas doesn't strike me as the kind of guy who will let his network fall to shambles. Solas will obviously not tell Rook about this. You made a good point bring that up. Should have mentioned it in the video.

@@Knight1029 I'll admit I'm worried its something that might get overlooked and unaddressed by the writers. I'll also admit that I am both skeptical and worried for this game not so much for the story or its quality but because it feels like they are straying away from the aspects and mechanics that set Dragon Age apart from other series including mass effect such as them further limiting the magic system and reducing the number of companions both active in the party and in total. I personally believe that Inquisition struck the right balance in that regard although I will admit I still prefer the way origins handled the UI for character powers and abilities. I do also think Inquisition found the right balance for character and npc design and appearance especially for the enemies and monsters we fight but I will always prefer the design of the Darkspawn in Origins compared to the rest of the series. I know I'm pretty much rambling at this point but I do wish they had stuck with Inquisition's example of active party size, number of companions (3 of each class for 9 total), and character abilities and UI implementation (From what we've seen both in the showcase and from screen shots, it seems to be way to similar to Andromeda and just as limited especially for companion abilities and weapon loadout.) Those are just my thoughts though, I'm still wishing for the game to succeed I just wish that the devs didn't change these aspects. One thing I am happy to see returning is how it seems it will be handling locations similar to origins, lots of area rich in detail to explore but not truly open world and more sparse like Inquisition was. (My main gripes with Inquisition was the open world and war table assignments turning it into a slog especially when doing follow up playthroughs or simultaneous playthroughs). All and all I hope it does well to merit another game, I just hope they pivot back to the mechanical aspects that set DA apart and made it distinct.

@@sarjurastormblade953 I can get the concern. I felt the same way when I initial heard Solas was gonna die and be turned into a ghost advisor. But I do think they will take that into account.
I feel you there. Something that I have talked about in previous videos is that I value consistency. Bioware had DAI but they chose to stray away from its combat. Now we have a game that looks more similar to Mass Effect than Dragon Age. It does suck. Having a series be consistent adds a lot to its identity and allows the series to master a combat style. Each game changing the combat means they have to start from scratch.
Though as you said DAV is improving on the prior games. Its nice to have a more DAO style of handling locations.
I think DAV is missing a lot of opportunities by not reusing what game before, mechanically speaking. But I do think it will be fine in the end.
Also I don't mind the rambling. I quite enjoy the conversations. So, you can ramble all you like.

Had very smilar thoughts as your initial reactions too. Like Solas was set up to be this big bad villain, various tailers featured him and the game's orignal name was Dreadwolf. Then after 10 years of waiting, suddenly nope, ot a threat anymore, just a glorified EDI/Sam but also elven god. I do hope they are going to do something interesting with him like you said, but my hopes are not high.

I am wary about Veilguard. I want it to be a good game and for it to have an great story but we will see. Bioware has been releasing flop after flop lately and they will have to earn my trust in them back and my money. Anthem was meh and ME: Andromeda was average; which is shocking since the ME series has always been way above average in my opinion. DA: Inquisition was good but it had its' problems such as the open world being more of an hindrance than anything else since a lot of side content was looking for traveling all across the map in search of mosaic pieces, shards, places of interest, etc instead of more interesting quests with tough decisions and a good story.

I get it to. When Bioware's last game is Anthem (the least like a Bioware game) I get the concern. From what I have seen it looks good.
DAI's biggets issue is definitely how it uses its open world. The wandering just doesn't feel that compelling. Also the lack of cinematic dialogue in side quests feels bad.

So your argument is that this change is good because villains are usually... written poorly? 😂 Did Bioware send you 10 bucks to make this video?
This is the final nail to Bioware's coffin, the last proof of their creative bankruptcy. They clearly didn't know how to write a compelling villain like Solas, so they decided to pull Corypheus II - make Solas our advisor again, this time with two generic blighted bad guys with a god complex. We were promised to have a villain that we know, who isn't just comically evil, and who might actually make us feel bad fighting him. We were supposed to have our desire to save Solas challenged by every irredeemable atrocity he commits. And all of it is gone now.
So let's just say I respectfully disagree with you ☺This game will be dead on arrival 😄

@@4RedJohn no? I just said that with Solas being a traditional villain wouldn't work for him. He was a companion and if he was a more traditional villain we would lose that interaction with him. Having him as a ghost allows us to interact with him. But it also allows for him to manipulate us or not tell us the whole truth. He will help us kill the Elven gods but he certainly won't help us take him down. Because you have to ask what if Solas isn't actually dead and just playing dead. And at the last minute he comes back and tears down the Veil.
The issue with Corypheus was the fact he wasn't present. Not that he was a bad villain.
