My white gear was not broken but it would not stay in place on the motor so I used some super glue to keep it in place and now it works perfectly. Thank you so much for your help on this repair video, My talking fur tree lives again after being in storage for the last 20 years.
Dude, this will come in handy for me! Thanks once again for the quick replies with guiding me to this! As I said there, looks like the original owner of the Douglas Fir I got yesterday must have done this at least one time or another during the time they owned him, since while I peeked underneath those little covers hiding both motors, I saw some metal ties on there along with the piece that screws them in. I think with that in mind, this should take little to no effort at all and it would be just amazing if I didn't have to work as hard as you did to pull each of the motors out on mine and then replace the 10-tooth gears.
@@_SkylarStudios good to know. Also does this same trick work with a dancing doug with a split gear but the mouth and eyes still move (thats my current one). Also on my original 2014 doug the speed dial came off and thats why it stopped dancing, is that fixable
@@Cecnorthernohio what do you mean? And yes, The speed dial is fixable, if you don't have the speed dial I'd just wire the wires together and it'll move. Without it the dancing doesn't work.
@@_SkylarStudios good to know about the speed dial. As for the split gear in my current doug, the eyes and mouth still move together but the gear is split so they dont open fully. My other dancing tree has it where the eyes split from the mouth
Those ones actually have two different motors, they are located on the left side of the mechanism. There should be a branch glued to a plastic cover, remove that and it's basically the same thing.
@@_SkylarStudios ok, found it. My tree kit will move its mouth only a little. Eyes don't move, but they do light up. Could it be the 10 tooth sprocket?
How do I fix the sound? My tree turns on but there’s no sound. The eyes and mouth open when turned on but just dances and doesn’t open again. I opened the bottom and there’s so many wires. Not sure I can fix it. Thanks!
Hi. I bought a dancing Douglas fur I found at a thrift store. It had never been taken out of the box. I tried hooking it up to an adapter and I saw it smoke a little. I immediately unplugged it. I then put batteries in it. It moves back and forth fine and the eyes light up, but the mouth or eyes don’t move and also it doesn’t play any music. At first I heard faint music but it doesn’t play any music at all. The sensor works great. Any idea what could be wrong with it or how I could fix it?
@@_SkylarStudios I’ve got the same model. I assume it’s only the ten tooth gear that’s busted. The others inside seemed fine. He was working fine ironically before I opened him up, and then he stopped working when I put him back together. I guess I was just inserting the gear too in? Sometimes I would get the eyes flying open and no mouth or eyes and very little mouth.. 🙄
@@_SkylarStudios It’s the gear that came with it. I tested it again at the mark and it still won’t run properly. Eyes open but mouth won’t move at all. The motor works. I’m assuming it is a split gear but I hope it’s just that.
Hi. I am new to these “I may be an ordinary____… But I’m not!” gag items, as I really like the concept of them. I plan to eventually get the 1996-97 3-song deep voice Douglas Fir with white eyeballs as well as the 16-inch wreath version for this Christmas. The only thing I’m worried about is that most of the deep voice versions and 16-inch wreaths I find on eBay appear to mostly be split as their eyes and mouths are exposed in the many of the pictures when not activated. I’m not asking for a how-to-fix video on both of them, but rather if you have experienced fixing these items before, can you explain to me how to fix both of them if the gears in the eyes or mouth split? I know they work better with 10 tooth gears. The only problem I have with this is I’m afraid if I took one of them apart with no experience, I’ll just accidentally break something important due to me not being the greatest at electronics. A few months ago, we ordered a Christmas Billy Bass from eBay, and seller didn’t tell us that there was a split gear in the body motion cue. We tried to fix it, but was unsuccessful. And it was thrown out. Long story short. What I’m saying is, if one of the gears in the eyes or mouth of a Douglas Fir-type item splits, how do I open them up without permanently damaging something important? Thank you.
@@_SkylarStudios okay, thank you. So when they’re differently built, what exactly is different? Are they just like dancing Douglas Fir but more firmly built?
The mechs are different. The bigger ones use 2 motors and have 2 mechs, one for the eyes and one for the mouth. But don't let it confuse you, you just do the same thing. Unscrew the two screws and take the motor out, just as I did here. I have had many Douglas firs over the years, I'm happy to help out. The wreaths also have 2 motors and 2 mechs, like the other trees do. Most of the ones that have this either have mouth and eye program at different times, there were smaller ones like this. All wreath's are like that, though, I think that would be obvious The Douglas fir in this video has one motor in one big long mech that controls both mouth and eyes, they used this later on
@@_SkylarStudios thank you so much! Where are the motors located in the eyes and mouth and how to I access unscrewing them without accidentally ripping off a branch?
Of course! The motors are located on the side of the mech, check for a dark green and/or black plastic cover with a branch on it. Gently remove it and no branches should fall off unless it's getting old. If so, a quick hot glue or super glue dap will do the trick.
Alright, so I've done part one of 2 of fixing my Douglas Fir with fixing the gear for his mouth. Unfortunately, I must have been a little clumsy as I inadvertently pulled off this one black wire (see image here: imgur.com/a/Br9oyB3) and now the mouth motor no longer works. :( I even tested it outside of the place it's supposed to be, and alas, I didn't hear any movement from it, so it looks like that black wire is going to have to be resoldered on (of which I can't do myself as I don't have that kind of knowledge). After that, I just left it at that for the night as I didn't want to do any other little bits of damage like I just inadvertently did with his mouth motor.
