  • I have had an interesting experience with my living situations over the past 5 years. My freshman year of college, I lived in New York City. What was supposed to be an amazing change in my life, turned into a very difficult few years of my life for multiple reasons.
p.s. i talk slow in this because I had to think about what I was saying LMAO speed up the playback

my first year at uni was AWFUL i hated my roommates, they very much othered me and were just so immature. instead of asking me to do smth, they'd slide really passive aggressive notes under my door while giggling and then run off. girl we are not 13 years old !
plus then i went away for 2 weeks to see family or smth, and when i came back NO ONE tidied the kitchen at all and there were MAGGOTS literally everywhere due to how much rubbish and filth was just left out. there was sauce and cake icing on the WALLS??? literally wtf

I'm not surprised that your princess roommate never did house cleaning. No doubt her family had always had people doing that for them. I've lived with people that weren't from privileged backgrounds who also never cleaned, and I had to do it. I once let their dirty dishes go until they completely covered the counter-space and they still wouldn't wash their dishes. I broke down and just washed them. Some people are just lazy pigs.

Lost a friend by making her my roommate it got so bad, she moved her boyfriend in, he payed for nothing, was jobless and ran up our bills, he invited his friend who would sneak in escorts into our apartment, they both also never cleaned the icing on the cake was when i invited my brother and 2 friends over to be in my room and her boyfriend threatened to hit me, keep in mind i was working and my name was on the lease, so i told my landlord what was up and she was super understanding, i broke my lease and left them with no living room furniture so yes never be roomates with friends

I’ve lived with my roommates for 3 years and they are now my sisters but we didn’t know each other at all when we moved in. It’s important to be able to express yourself fully with the people you live with without social implications. We all get along with each others friends but each have our own friendship groups with no overlap and I think this is essential for that sister bond with a roomate to work. Good roommates are just non blood siblings. Not best friends.

i lived with several roommates and honestly the worst kind (for me) were the ones that tiptoed. like i felt like they could hear me breathing in my room they were so quiet. hear me pee etc. i hated it. I couldn't breathe. also this same group is guilty of never contributing to household goods. even took my feminine products without replacing. also had roommates leave their vomit on the floor of the only bathroom in the house.

I am the type to tiptoe, but i give 70+ bucks a month to food, and pay my rent on the first of the month. I am very clean outside my room. My room is cluttered though, i have a lot of books and whatnot. I think when most people have extremely quiet roommates and hate it is because that roommate is also never there. It's so isolating to have a person there who isn't there.
I say as I am that exact person. But hey, atleast I'm clean.

Due to my ADHD, I often get too tired to clean up after myself sometimes and so it's not a habit... My roommates got mad at me for not cleaning up after myself and doing chores bc I in general never had the habit of cleaning up after myself unless I'm reminded at least once or twice (of which is not smth others are supposed nor are willing to do). But after receiving criticisms from them, I did slowly start to try to be considerate and to think about how they'd feel when I leave candy wrappers on the sofa. And to always think about how others would feel if I'm making noise at night. Then, they noticed my change in behavior, and now feel better about my presence. And then also for those who have ADHD, just think of the chores as a very simple thing like picking up one thing or as something really urgent to do. Bc you have to realize you are sharing a space with others, and there is a responsibility that comes with using and living in a shared space. If it's traumas or some habits, please get help. Remember that even if you're struggling to do chores or other required tasks, if you do not clean up, your roommates come into a room full of dust or a smelly room or a room full of bugs. Or if you make noise late at night, they get less quality sleep. You can ask some of your friends or family members to remind u or communicate with your roommates if there's something you have trouble doing.

Im going on 27 now and live with ny partner. I realized a few years before we got together that its hard enough to live with people that you love, let alone strangers and friends. People really just have different particularities and preferences, some things seem objectively wrong but then again, everyone can kind of do what they want. If it doesnt bother them then its only a problem for someone else.
Like I previously said, living with people you love is hard enough. I have ADHD and tend to have a sprawl effect when I get busy with work or projects, and my partner is the type of person who needs to be told to actually dust surfaces. Neither of us want to be alone and we *try* to accommodate each other. Doesnt always work.
I would say if youre young, dont be too hard on yourself for wanting your own space. Humbling yourself and finding someone else who can do the same, who you actually want to spend time with, is a task for older adults who have the mindset to do so. Small apartments are not built for privacy. It takes love and patience to live with anyone, which doesnt bode well for us all forming community in late stage capitalism, because super young people being thrust into artificial, crammed community spaces just makes them more prone to wanting to be isolated.

I commenting this not necessarily to Ryan’s video but more to this comment section and people thinking about roommates. I think it depends on alot of things -roommates are always a coin flip regardless if they’re strangers or your best friend. I lived with my best friend from High School, everyone said it wasn’t gonna work out but we ended up living together for the entirety of University and she’s still my best friend to this day. I’m not saying we never argued or had our ups and downs but we worked through it like adults and communicated.
After we graduated she moved with her boyfriend after that I live with a friend from work for 2 years which also a great experience became like sisters the only reason we don’t live together still is because I moved out of state for a new job.
Everyone’s different. And in retrospect some people just aren’t meant to be roommates. You have to compromise, you have to communicate, can’t be afraid of confrontation. And you have to want it to work out.
Some roommates are psychopaths- literally. But it had nothing to do with them being your friend before or not and has everything to do with them being shit people. Unfortunately you wont know until you live with them and that counts for strangers too.

it has a lot to do with parenting and upbringing. my cousins are extremely like EXTREMELY well off, in our home country they are the richest family. Despite their wealth, they are the most down to earth, humble and well-mannered people I have met considering their generational wealth. I can only imagine her parents have the same bad habits she does and didn’t instill any type of backbone into their daughter 😭

This story kinda reminds me of a friend I have 😭 It's not as bad and I still like him but his parents are obviously wealthier than mine and pay for his whole rent and stuff while mine can't afford to cover everything. We both work the same job at an event centre and it's very flexible and you can basically decide how much you want to work but last summer and in october I barely got any shifts because they hired so many new people and literally couldn't afford rent and had to take money from my few savings that I have so I started a second job at a local theatre and he's so weird about it 😭 He literally asked me yesterday why I even work the second job even though I've explained multiple times that I have to make several hundred € a month to get by and I can't do that if the job we work together only lets me work 3 shifts a month. He also seems to be working there just for fun as some months he just doesn't do any shifts at all because he has to focus more on uni while I'm here not having a choice 💀 I just really hate it when people don't have a grip at all

A year ago I got a job, worked two weeks with this girl my age, and moved in tg. A year later we’re moving out of this apartment to a rent house in Jan. We’ve fought before over dumb stuff but it’s a special friendship and it helped us learn communication

i am currently living with my longest friend. it's awful. she never cleans up after herself, doesn't flush her poop all of the way, allows her dogs to act out horribly and attack her cat, gets up every hour during the night for snack and blames it on her dogs needing to go out even though she will leave them in her room for ten hours without a potty break... i could go on and on and on. i know i should be grateful having a place to live. her parents bought her this house, so i am here rent free. my mental health has never been worse (which is really saying something) and i have lost all the respect i had for her. she was my best friend in the world. i can't even look at her now. i would move into my car if it wasn't winter right now. this has been one of the worst experiences of my life and it has only been a couple of months. i really wish i felt grateful for this, but it's really difficult when it's so fucking horrid.

YOOO the unecessary therapy speak is so real though. I understand its hard for some people to address their needs, especially if they grew up as people pleasers. However in my experience, communicating in therapy speak makes what could have been a simple & mature conversation that finds a solution to address the needs of both parties into one person over-empathizing the other person - which results in meeting the empathized's needs but not the empathizer's. Maybe this is just my experience, but in my opinion, if u wanna therapy speak with me u better be paying me like I'm your therapist bitch.

Rich people who are frugal and stubborn are so.... why would I pay $15 each time to do my damn laundry? Then when an option to conserve money was right in front of her she was almost disgusted at the idea of having to do it herself? The 1% are not like us at all. I would likely start to harbor feelings of resentment too. I knew she would pull that "After all my family did for you" card. She aint shit for that frankly.
