That Drummer, Kenny, used to play with Jaco Pastorius's son, Felix.
He is also the drummer for Brand X ( who's original drummer was Phil Collins )
Also drums for Secret Chiefs 3, the band that IS Trey Spruance of MR. Bungle

That's some fantastic merits right there! (doesn't make this drumming jazzier though - but proves amazing versatility)

Kenny's truly one of the best drummers in the world right now. He has also played with John Zorn quite a lot, and in Sally Gates's band Titan to Tachyons, with Trevor Dunn of Mr. Bungle.

I think the blasting is kind of getting in the way of the lots of jazzy flourishes. It's the one thing bands who also use jazzy drumming, like ulcerate, have learned, some breathing room can do wonders.
That said, Bed Burns Ende are great fits for this theme. They're a lot less enamoured with bursts of speed, and the drumming is at once both jazzy and kind of understated. Most metal bands love jazz for it's intricate patterns and how proggy and technical it can get, Ves Buens Ende used jazz as a tool for some pretty off the wall unsettling patterns. they've already featured here and they did impress.

Also, another band that fits and very much linked to Ved Burns Ende, Dodheimsgard in their Umbra Omega album has a lot of jazzy patterns flowing through the sheer chaos. You reacted to one song from this album, and it kinda overwhelmed you with how crazy it is, but it does fit the jazzy drumming theme.

I'm loving what this dude is doing with the ride and cymbal work For a small kit it sounds huge and those double bass fills are so good This is reminding me of something Mario Duplantier would play and you can't go wrong with Mr Duplantier I'd like to hear the vocals to this bc vocals are what makes or breaks a song for me 95% of the time Thx for the vid Bryan 😎🤘✌️🧐

They should've had you do "Transmission to Mercury". They even have a live version that's an official video with good audio quality. I don't know who keeps recommending the worst songs from these bands but they need to stop 😅.

so loose and washed out. as if this song is mocking us. truly brutal

I know people has commented that this isn't jazz drumming. Since I picked this vid I can just say that it is just jazzy drumming. Surely there is jazz influences, not the least towards the end where it sounds like what a jazz drummer does during a drum solo.
And yes, the rest of the band is kept in the background in favor of the drums.

      Moaning companion reporting 😁
This is by all means a good song. And would fit very well for next week's theme (except not too "good" in Bryan's world maybe - due to the prevalent dissonance that both You and I hold much dearer than he....)
But, I found the music partly jazzier than the drumming style. That was my hurdle against fitting it into this week"s theme of jazzy drumming with non-jazz music.

    • @progperljungman8218

I do think there's more jazz influence in some drum work of the slower part, although the bass kicks sets a metal foundation.

@@progperljungman8218 It might also be useful to know that Kenny sometimes plays with the classical left hand grip, which is what is normally used by jazz drummers.

@@Cynips I think next week will be awesome since the picks are all exciting and mainly really, really great as well. Might even end up as one of Bryan's favourite weeks (sounds like a joke but I'm actually serious 😊)

Not too jazzy imo. Tons of ghosts on the snare. Very cool movement through the kit.
I quite like this band in a genre that isn't really my jam within metal. Although I'd say their better songs are great and their worst songs are very bleh.
You should definitely listen to the studio version. The clarity makes it more cohesive imo.

Kenny's drumming reminds me of Sean Reinert. Kenny is clearly TOP TIER skills, composition...

I think we could have had Thank You, Scientist - Rube Goldberg Variations for this theme, or Incubus - Summer Romance (Anti-Gravity Love Song), or if it's not considered jazz, Sting - Seven Days is 100% jazz drumming!!! Just a quick mention, if you've not heard Sting - I Was Brought To My Senses, it's also got some great jazz drumming and it's probably my favourite song by Sting. It's never getting reacted to, so feel free to listen for your own pleasure if you get chance. :) I got another one... I thought Dream Theatre - Hollow Years, but it's only got Jazzy drumming in the verses, but it's fairly rudimentary
Found a class example - Alien Ant Farm - Attitude (or is that a shuffle?)
And... Particularly since you enjoyed their other song so much, Cressida - Let Them Come when They Will, the last song from the Asylum album ( also, practically the whole Cressida album has Jazzy drumming imo, but it's 100% not defo not jazz) - This is another song that won't get selected and you will never hear unless for pleasure, so feel free to casually listen... its a blast, and the samba section is mental, as is the very end... Worth a listen for sure.

Jazz has Evolved since the 50’ ... Boxing in Genres...
This is Jazz/Metal Drumming (Metal has always been Jazzy since its birth)...
Ever Heard Black Sabbath’s Drummer, etc...
Ever heard Bitches Brew, better yet Mahavishnu Orchestra, Tony Williams Lifetime, etc...
Fusion is Jazz (not all Jazz Swings all the time)...
Those traditionalist rules are Old Hat just an element of a much larger Art Form than is usually acknowledged by purest...
If Jazz didn’t Evolve or Morph, it would have died out a long time ago...
Imperial Triumphant’ Drummer Kenny Grohowski was a Pure Jazz drummer before he was Metal drummer
(again Jazz has always been an element of Metal)...
He’s made albums with Avant Garde Jazz Artist... John Zorn, etc
In fact IT’ Bassist was also a Jazz Musician first & the Vocalist/Guitarist has a degree Classical Composition...
Blast Beats started with Jazz (Tony Williams)...
Of course Metal drummers have Evolved this technique
I like traditional, Avant Garde, Fusion & Modern Jazz...
What’s not Cool is Modern Jazz Musicians trying to phone in what’s already been done by more Creative people when it was fresh...
Art doesn't have to be pretty (beauty is not its only purpose)...
Aesthetic beauty is in the ear of the beholder
Thrive in the Beauty of Dissonance & it’s Bewitching Melodies...
    Nice Video, Great Band...
