The buns you mentioned are actually pan-fried stuffed buns (水煎包Shui Jian Bao). They’re steamed first and then pan-fried, which makes them crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They’re one of the most famous street foods here.
We apologize for the language barrier at that stall, which unfortunately meant you couldn’t try these delicious buns. That stall is very popular in the neighborhood, so most people place reservations or call ahead to order hours in advance. Because of this, if you want to order in person at the stall, you might have to wait nearly an hour. They weren’t trying to avoid selling to you; they just couldn’t explain the situation clearly due to the language barrier. We hope you understand.
As a resident of Kaohsiung, I hope you enjoyed your time in Kaohsiung. It’s a pity you missed out on the buns, but if you visit Kaohsiung again in the future, let us know, and we can order them in advance for you.
By the way, we use Mandarin Chinese (Traditional) in Taiwan, instead of Simplified Chinese as used in China.
Thank you and looking forward to more videos.

The yellow rubber duck exhibition ends few months ago, the exhibition is limited time, only went for a month.
And Chase is right about the artwork, it's very industrial, that's because Kaohsiung used to be a heavy industrial city, and now transforming itself to a more artistic and touristy city, but keeping the artwork industrial, reminding what Kaohsiung used to be like, and had came a long way. The whole Pier 2 used to be old industrial warehouse.

豆花pronounces “Do Hua” or “To hua” also made from soy bean but more fluffy and light. 豆花is a popular traditional dessert in Taiwan, normally served in a bowel with lots of different toppings you can choose, for example, boiled peanuts, red/green beans, taro, boba etc.

Taiwanese do this to avoid litter flying everywhere. And if there are many drinks, we will use different knots to distinguish which drink belongs to whose.

The duck was a temporary exhibition. In fact, we had two ducks this time. Previous exhibition was over a decade ago. I wouldn’t recommend pier 2 on weekdays. Vendors and people crowd the place only on the weekends. Btw, regarding the driver. Yeah they can turn but pedestrians first. They will be fined when caught. Good job entering the most known beef noodle place in Kaohsiung.

In Taiwan, we use "Traditional" Chinese which is the original writing system of thousands of years based on 6 elements, which in China, after CCP took over and started the 10-year cultural revolution, they "simplified" the writing system based on 2 elements. The Taiwanese we speak is also traced back about thousands of years while the mandarin Chinese started in Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), mostly when Manchu people learned to speak the language with Manchu accent.

Bubble teas are meant to be shaken. Their other name is roughly translated to “hand-shaken drink”. Bubbles actually refer to the foam from mixing but in North America many people think it’s the pearls.
Also FYI, it’s Chinese (traditional) in Taiwan. :) China uses simplified.

    • @ChaseandShelbs

    • @atsaichu
      @atsaichu 3 місяці тому +1

@@ChaseandShelbs Bubble tea originated from tea shops that sells cold drinks shaken in those metal cocktail shakers. The bubbles come from the shaking. Boba or pearls weren't part of the concoction at the beginning. Two shops claim they invented pearl milk tea but no one really knows for sure. Also, originally the pearls added in the milk tea were the smaller kind of tapioca balls. Boba, a slang from Hong Kong that means certain female body parts, are the bigger kind that has become more common and popular today.
Single-use plastic cups for beverages have gradually been outlawed throughout Taiwan starting in 2022, as you correctly suspected, for environmental protection reasons. Those cool shots of brown sugar boba and milk mixing inside a clear cup are hard to reproduce these days.

I live in Vancouver lol and compared to other places, I like the weather , its mostly better than other provinces. The city is beautiful too surrounded by mountains instead of concrete jungle Toronto or snow filled Alberta. All these countries near the equator are interesting but the weather is crap.

There are few trash bins on the streets of Taiwan,
People will tie the plastic outside the straw to the straw.
This behavior will be very local! Hahaha
