Reading the Wind | Headwind, Tailwind, AND Crosswind | Disc Golf

  • Several of you have asked, and I have delivered! Playing in the wind is a part of disc golf. However, it can be incredibly challenging and frustrating if you don't know how to read the wind and how to select the proper disc. Headwinds make discs more understable, tailwinds make discs more overstable, and crosswinds impact a disc's ability to hyzer or flex out. It is critical that you understand what the wind is doing in order to throw the best shot possible!

I haven’t seen any videos focusing on disc weight and how that affects flight. Is that something you could do a video on?

I can definitely work on that! Thanks for the idea!

I'm skeptical that it makes a huge difference: you're basically looking at a 10% difference - how much can that be in terms of effect? There is a guy (JustDisc) who made a video on how it affects distance (not headwind or anything) and they all reach about the same distance. The reason for that is long to explain - but long story short, a lighter disc will slow down faster in the first half of it's flight and have less energy left over in the 2nd half. So it evens out.

Hi ,first off I love your videos. I don’t know if it’d be worth a video but I have trouble with gripage, I’ve been playing just a couple months,I carry a towel, but even then sometimes the grass is really wet, or it’s hot out here in California you sweat, and so on, my fingers get really dry and the disc just releases all wrong. Maybe could even do product review or suggestions,I just have innova beginners disc ( what about sand paper, is there anything I can condition my discs with,is there to much grip, different plastics, disc care etc ,etc.)thank you for the great vides👍

Great question! I actually address some of those things in my In The Bag video. I talk about the chalk I have and the sandpaper I use. It might address some of your questions. Texas gets super hot too during the summer and this chalk bag I use is AMAZING!

This shouldn't be "Reading the Wind"...I haven't heard anything about reading the wind. It should be titled "How Wind Affects Your Disc"

I considered it, but reading the wind is another way of saying how the wind affects your disc. If you don’t know what the wind is doing, then you can’t determine the best disc to throw in the wind. All in all, it’s “6 to one, half a dozen to the other!” Hope you found the video helpful nonetheless!
