    The front motor mount was visibly broken and required replacement. I wondered if the other mounts were worthwhile replacing or if replacement was unnecessary. Since I work on both Honda and Toyota vehicles, I spoke with Anchor's technical support specialist to get more information about both engine and transmission mount technology. Before going to the Anchor Q&A, here are the torque specs from what I was able to find for the Civic: Rear mount bolts: 43 lbs, Side engine bracket nuts: 40 lbs, Trans mount bracket mount bolt/nuts: 40 lbs, Front mount bolt: 47 lbs
    Some highlights from my Q & A session with Anchor:
    Although front mounts appear to be the first mount to go bad, is there value for the car owner to replace all the mounts?
    Yes, we always recommend replacing mounts as a set. Only changing one mount can apply added stress to the newly installed mount causing premature failure. Keep in mind every stretch on one side's mount is also a compression on the opposite side. It would be comparable to a marathon runner running 10,000 miles in the same pair of shoes. If he started experiencing pain in one of his ankles and determined it was because of worn out sneakers; he would want to replace both sneakers, not just the one causing him discomfort. By replacing both you're ensuring each side has equal give/ cushion and the mounts are able to function the way they were designed to.
    Are "jack rabbit" acceleration from a dead stop the main cause of front motor mount stress?
    Rapid acceleration will cause mount failure however, any extreme operating conditions can cause a failure. Extreme conditions include; rough roads (bumps, potholes), heavy towing loads, extreme climate (rubber parts tend to fail at a higher rate in extreme heat), rapid acceleration or off-roading just to name a few.
    Is the rubber used in anchor mounts superior to OEM mounts? If so, are they expected to last longer?
    We match OE specs. We mirror the rubber's durometer (how stiff/ soft it is) so our mounts function the way the OE's were designed to. We don't claim superiority over OE; we aim to be unnoticeably similar. Our aftermarket peers however, aim to produce "good enough" at the lowest possible price. They often use fillers and recycled byproducts in their rubbers which inhibit mounts from performing their function (dampening engine vibrations).
    In some instances, we try to improve upon the OE design by observing where and how the OE fails. If we see patterns or are able to identify specific weak points in the design, we reinforce those weaknesses by adding material and making them thicker (not by reformulating rubber recipes).

      For the rear transmission mount, how long was your wrench extension? Seemed like you had several to try and get in there. Do you remember your torque specs? @@hardlymovingpro

      Update 2001 Honda Civic EX 1.7 AT: Torqued all 14mm/17mm bolts on the rear mount to 47ft-lbs (3 on transmission and 3 to subframe). Used three 10-13" extentions with a universal or "wobbly" adaptor/extension for the 17mm bolts (transmission bolts). This video helped me quite a bit. Reminded me that I needed to orientate the wheel to get the proper angles. Used power tools, but a breaker bar was the only thing that could get the 17mm off the transmission.

    Might me just me, but after using numerous different parts vendors over the years, I've settled on NAPA parts for my needs. Yes they are more expensive than others, but the quality and correct fit is worth it to me. Just saying.

    • @hardlymovingpro
      @hardlymovingpro  Рік тому +1

      NAPA, along with other retail vendors like AutoZone, will buy parts from vendors like Anchor, and rebox the part with their company name and logo. They have large repacking facilities to do this. In this way, you never know who is the manufacturer of the part. Car manufacturers do the same thing. But a lot of times the parts vendor will put their name on the part. In addition, to get large purchase discount deals, they must assume warranty liability. If a part goes bad and a warranty claim is made by the customer, they don't send the part back to the parts vendor.

      Place a hydraulic jack under the oil pan with a wide flat piece of wood in between as to not damage the pan. Pump the jack until the engine moves up slightly. Remove the side motor mount bracket. Now the engine will drop down after releasing the oil pan lift tension from the hydraulic jack.

    What brand of aftermarket engine mounts do you recommend for a 2003 Honda Civic Lx since my car vibrates a lot and I need to buy the engine and automatic transmission mounts but the original Honda mounts are worth more than the vehicle itself and from the aftermarket I have heard that later They don't fit well and come in different sizes than the originals. Please, could you provide me with a brand of supports that is good and that is not so expensive and the link to the website where I can buy them is not too much of a hassle. Thanks

      Most mechanics do not want to spend the time and effort researching for viable alternative parts that can be just as good or better than OEM. Easier and safer for the mechanic to buy from the dealer at your expense.
