  • Honda BMXA Transmission.
This is a transmission of a Honda civic BMXA. Here we see the most common issues I see with these units. The most common being a restricted filter.
Had some camera issues, hope you don't mind. A clip came out black and white.

Hiram--thanks for taking the time to do this video in such a professional manner. I pulled a junkyard unit to rebuild for my daughter's Civic that had no motion in any gear. Between this and the factory manual, this was very doable! We'll rebuild her unit now that I've swapped it out with the one I rebuilt and it works perfectly! Your efforts are appreciated!

Hey man, just wanted to let you know, this video you did was awesome and I wanted to say thanks for putting this up. my transmission took a dump and I have never done a transmission before but this video saved me so much money and saved my civic. I had a few glitches but I finally got it back together after rebuilding it and I could have never been able to do it had it not been for this walk through. Thanks again, man!

I'd like to share what I've learned from this transmission. The first clutch pack you remove has thinner Steve plates then the other clutchpacks always remove the shaft end o-rings on the first clutchpack before splitting the case. And lastly I didn't have a puller like in your video so I tapped the whole assembly against a hard surface upside down and the pulleys came off. I used a section of steel pipe to tap them back on.
Thank you so much for this great informative video. Without this video I wouldn't have had the guts to even take a closer look at this transmission much less do a full rebuild.
Thank you and I will click the subscribe button

When it comes to transmissions and automotive work there is so much to it now a days if you dont have a background in it, then its extreamly hard to get into, but if your driven and wanna do it, do it up!!! but for thes newer transmissions to work properly alot of other systems in a car or truck have to work properly, the amount this man knows about all the types of transmissions is amazing!

Sorry I left so many comments didn't mean to bug you. I already had the transmission in the car whe n I went to hook up the coolant lines and found the problem. I decided to take it all back apart and inspect. I didn't want a piece of coolant line wedged in between the bearing seat turns out it was threaded in too far without the coolant line on and the diferential just knocked it a bit. No biggie. Thank you for your video this is my first trans rebuild.

Nice video. I am an ASE certified auto mechanic with 22+ years of experience; I never rebuild automatic transmission myself neither any auto repair shop that I worked rebuild automatic transmission; we always sanded this cars to an automatic transmission shop. At only one exception at the dealer where I worked they had one mechanic specialized in automatic transmission and they use to give all the automatic transmission repair to that mechanic only; and it’s the same with all the dealers. Now days many dealers won’t even do that they have their national rebuilding center so they order a rebuild one from that center and sent the old transmission back to that center to be rebuilt and put it on the shelf, they’re doing the same thing with the engines, they figured it's better and quicker.

Very helpful video. If you watch this video AND his video Titled "Honda Trans Rebuild Video - Trans Repair" You should have no problem rebuilding your BMXA trans. Second video is of an Accord, But the same techniques goes into 4spd. Like how to install orings & clutch packs. My rebuild kit, filter, TC, honda fluid & a couple seals cost me about $250.

Excellent video. When I took mine apart, everything was exactly the same except for one tiny, pea sized, cup-shaped, fine meshed, screen filter. This isn't the 1/2 sized screened filter either. This one was lying on the main valve body and I have no idea where it goes. I have the service manual and it isn't in the exploded diagram either. Could you show me where it goes? I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

Hiram I am at a loss. I really need to get in touch with someone who knows what theyre doing with these things.
I purchased the car with a 4th gear slip issue once warmed up. Every other gear was fine. Including reverse.
Upon finishing the rebuild and installing the Trans, the car drove fine from first gear to fourth and into lockup. The only issue was reverse.
Reverse felt as though the parking pawl was still engaged. In fact in park, reverse, and in neutral I could not push the car backward or forward.
I dropped the motor a bit and pulled the side cover off expecting the pawl had lost its spring tension or was somehow sticking, but that was not the case.
So, I have removed the transmission again. I suspected I had the reverse shift fork actuator spun 180 degrees around. That was not the case. I then checked the orientation of the selector hub and it is on right also.
I AM AT A LOSS! The only thing I find that seems off is when I manually move the shift fork with the actuator still hooked up, I get a squirt up through a feed tube when the manual valve is in reverse. When it's in any other gear it seems to squirt out somewhere near the main valve body in the center of the transmission. Please if you see this and you have had the time to read it, leave a reply!

Its good that all electronc controls are outside on honda transmissions.. but biggest negative is internal filters. I believe that cause all the problems in these transmissions. If they were easy to replace like many other manufactures, they would last longer than they do..

Hi Hiram. Great video. I'm rebuilding a b4ra on a 98 civic lx. It looks identical. At 22:38 you remove a snap ring. I'm having trouble putting that snap ring back in and because of this, the mainshaft does not freely rotate when the casing is torqued to spec. Does that clip need to fit into a groove on the shaft or does it nestle into the thrust bearing. Thanks for sharing your expertise. Because of your work I think my rebuild will be a complete success. (Once I figure out the snap ring issue). Thanks for sharing.

Do you know what causes these transmissions to go out when the wrong fluid is used?
My clutch pack closest to the torque converter the clutch pack without the spring spacer washer ring thing.
Thw steel plates were purple from overheating.
Is it thw seals that go in these clutchpacks? Maybe if the steel clutch disk got that hot in there it was enough to shrink the large oring I did the transmission job and the car is running great but when I peeked into the dipstick hole the fluid did not look very clean at all. All the o rings in the transmission looked great. So I didn't bother changing any. But now I am worried that the only one bad in the trans would be the one for that clutch pack that got hot. I think I may have to do this job again. Please let me know your thoughts on this.
And one question I would like to ask is. I'm sure you've done a lot of these transmissions. Which o-rings most commonly fail. Thank you

Are there any Sonnax upgrades recommend for the BMXA transmission, in the other Honda rebuild videos Hiram recommended O-Ringed end plug kit, TC Check Valve and Pressure regulator valve as upgrades. I can only see the end plugged Kit on the Sonnax site for the BMXA transmission. Also what rebuild kit are you guys using/recommend want something with everything in it the Raybestos GPX frictions look like a step up. I have 2 questions. The clutch that you opened up on 24:26 of this video. The clutch on the main shaft closest to the torque converter. Was missing an internal washer in my transmission. All the other clutches in my transmission after removing the final steel plate had what looks like a huge cut washer. When I assembled the clutch the plates had a lot of play. Not like the other clutches in my transmission that were nice and snug.
It looks in the video like the ring is missing on the trans you opened as well. Is this normal?
P.s. I could tell by wear marks this ring has been missing. It's this why this clutch burns first? Sane as in your video.
My second question are all the clutch disks and plates the same size? Because my kit came with a bunch in one package. It wasn't until I rebuilt the 1st clutch. That the steel plates were thicker

Hello, I have a question: When disassembling the secondary valve body to do the maintenance (polishing of housings and stems in a b4ra) I found that to remove one of the valves (cpc) you have to remove a closing screw that the manual says " watch out: don't move. " The valve does not move well, it locks, so it would be necessary to make a polish. The manual clearly shows that the other four valves must be removed and does not show this.

Can you remove the solenoids in place to clean the screen or would you need to drain the ATF first? Great videos. Learning a lot, thank you.

Hola Hiriam. Porfavor ayuda!

Dear colleague. Hello from Russia from your colleague.
    I watched your videos.
If possible, send the link manual for repair of this transmission SLXA ,BMXA.
So I completely understand how to repair it.
I understand that you probably have not enough time for me.
But still I do not lose faith that you will help me.
I would gladly have purchased this manual here in Russia
But it's just not on sale and on the Internet.
Thank you in advance. With greetings from Russia.

So I had my uncle rebuild my Honda Civic 2002 BXMA trans. Afterwards it has no reverse. It does not appear to have a linkage problem. So what can cause this?

Hiram, I'm getting ready to order a rebuild kit and torque converter. Do you have and suggestions for parts? I'm looking on Rock Auto at the PA CARGO Deluxe kit. and the DACCO torque converter. Also looking at a shift kit from Trans Lab. I would greatly Appreciate your feed back. Thanks
