My favorite reviewer. He reviews the car from the prospective of actually owning the car. Most reviewers are caught up in track performance , 0-60 etc that has little to do with everyday driving. Great job Matt
Bought this exact one in February. Went from a 2017 to the 2020 and it’s a night and day difference. My only 2 complaints is that rear visibility and that the tail lights aren’t LED like the 2017 I had
Agree 100%, great looking car. But I do find it amusing that the press seems to love the big C-pillars that block visibility and have no problem with the little plastic pieces on the exterior. A few years ago, the press dumped lots of criticism on Dodge because the Avenger had big C-pillars and plastic pieces outside, even though that thing had a 283 HP V-6! Oh well, times change.
As an eighth gen maxima owner I’m shocked at how good looking this is. I hope Nissan continues to build its brand back up because when they are focused they can make a truly great car
Dude I looooove the redesign on the Sentra! Great review couldn’t agree more with the styling. Probably best in class! Glad you enjoyed it just as much as me
3:40 I actually prefer what Nissan does with the blindspot monitoring system being in the pillar as in my eyes, it's better than the ones that are in the mirrors, as they can be covered with snow, ice and such, compared to the pillar one being right there in your line of sight all of the time
Nissan should be fighting back where it matters...fix their crappy transmissions and their worst in reliability reputation. All these reviewers get all enthusiastic when they drive a new car, but they never talk about their reliability and how crappy Nissan has treated their customers.
@@Ty-vq1jy my $20,000+ Versa's transmission took a crap just after the warranty expired (like millions of other Nissans) I ain't no rich guy, so do you think I'm going to take a chance on another Nissan? Nope, I'll let other poor folks buy Nissans for a few model years before I even think of contemplating buying another. After my Versa took a dump, I purchased a new 2015 Corolla...other than regular oil and filter changes , no other maintenance or repair costs.
I think it's a great thing that Nissan hasn't changed their key fob yet. Don't fix what ain't broken. It's nice and compact, nicely weighted. Much better than Mazda's new chunky ass keyfob that is mostly holllow, has tiny buttons on the side of the fob, and is way too bulky. On the other hand, Kia's badass detonator key fob is the correct way to do a new and classy key fob.
I have a 2018 Honda Accord Sport 2.0T, and I am very impressed with their key fob. Has a great weight to it, right size, and imo best key fob compared to the competitors. It has the remote start on my car too.
Totally agree with you. There's nothing wrong with the Nissan key fob, I actually like it a lot. For some, reason ALL reviewers complain about it though.
I just purchased this car yesterday, the basic model with 16,000 miles & I really like this car inside & out 😊 I enjoyed watching your review & hearing your thoughts about this car!
I can’t believe. I don’t know why I don’t wait for this. I am leasing the Sentra SR 2019. I got it on Black Friday. Big difference between this models.
If this has enough power for Matt Maran its enough for me. The best looking in the class for sure. Also thank you for not whining about HP and the CVT etc. Great objective review !
I have a 2012 Nissan Sentra S with over 196,000 miles on it. Never had an issue with the original CVT. I changed the fluid every 60,000 miles as required in the owner’s manual. Nissan is capable to be reliable as Toyota and Honda. You haters should learn how to read a manual and drive a car properly and you won’t have any problems long term.
chrisgraydon I have posted on multiple reviews when the CVT comments come. ill say the same as you.. i owned a 2014-2017 & now a 2020 Altima with CVT. i had over 100,000 miles on them when i traded. never any issues on them and i did the Maintenance as the dealer said for fluid changes to the CVT. I know people have issues with CVTs but id like to know if they least did the maintenance as it was called for. Yes some was garbage but i think nissan wasnt the only brand in the early 2010s that had cvt issues.
Literally my sisters 2016 Sentra just hit 100,000 and it’s still running like a champ with its original cvt. I personally also think it just depends if the people do the maintenance on time
I have been a Nissan owner for many years. You name it, from Muranos, Zs, Pathfinders, Altimas, Maximas, Sentra. I currently have a 2008 Sentra with 155K miles. Unfortunately, I may be saying bye bye to Nissan. Next compact will either be a 2020 Toyota Corolla SE (169HP) or a Mazda 3. Reliability A+ with Toyota. Mazda is the best looking car in its' class.
Those interiors are perfect. The NISMO theme and nomenclature need to be replaced by an SER; NISMO never felt appropriate for it. I still think Nissan can make a proper comeback if they make interiors this good and with more power. BUT, i still think the Civic is a better buy. It’s a 5 year old car and it’s still pretty much the best in class. Very decent interiors, with lots of clever use of space, nicely equipped, spacious, good power and great driving dynamics.
I really like the new Sentra, but I am a little biased since my family has owned almost every generation of Sentra since 1982. My 08 SE-R was a fun car as well, and I will wait a little for a new SE-R or Nismo Sentra. If I can’t wait, I would get one in their blue color with the quilted leather seats. Also MPG is much better on the lower trims due to the smaller 16 inch wheels.
I have to say the new Sentra does look nice. Interior is a step up from previous generations. I hate CVTs. Hate is not a strong enough word, lol, but I understand most cars in this class only have CVTs or a manual option. Manual is a great option if possible, but I can't get behind a CVT and I really struggle to get behind any Nissan's right now. I had a 2005 Nissan Altima SE-R (6 speed manual) and that was a GREAT car! But Nissan has gone straight down since those days. I prefer Hondas now. But great review as always. Go Hokies!😀
Why spend $4,000 more for the Corolla or the Civic when you can get this with more features than those have,a nicer interior than those have? The answer is :Long term reliability, trade and resale value.
In Canada, base Sentra can be had with 6MT. Base 6MT Civic cost $4800 more, weights 280lb less, has android-auto and heated front seat and mirrors. Judging from review, Sentra probably feels more refined then Civic for regular driving, but driven to the max on the STREET, base Civic (with 6MT) has as much attitude as Si or Type-R. However, still not enough to justify the massive price premium...unless Civic ends up being tuned for the Track.
As long as Nissan doesn't do like the last NISMO Sentra and price it out of reach. The last NISMO Sentra I saw was priced at $35,000 when at the same show, there was a Focus ST with more power and $25,000.
Great review here as well as the separate interior review. I am pleased Nissan has stepped up their game here. I hope success from this and the Kicks might infuse enough money back into the brand to spice up their tired models and give us some tasty new ones!
TheTrucker Ed Show well you're one stupid idiot if you can't except the fact that Jatco CVTs are cheaply made, badly designed transmissions, it's almost like they're designed to break no matter how well you take care of your car
Eagerly waiting for a Sentra Nismo so that I don't have to deal with Nissan's garbage tier CVTs. Also, I don't hate CVTs, I just hate Nissan's unreliable garbage.
I have to agree with you regarding the rear view position, its a bit high. I have a 2019 Altima SV AWD and its higher then normal vs. my 2015 Accord. It just a matter of getting use to it I guess. I love my Altima though but this Sentra is looks as good too. If you take off the badge, you'll have a hard time telling which is which aside from the size of the car.
Great review. Although you said it was a quiet ride, it seemed pretty noisy on the highway (road noise). I have rented a lot of cars in the past six months and hope to rent this one too to check out road noise on the horrible freeway pavements we have around here. The most recent cars were the 2020 Corolla sedan and the hatchback (rented twice) and they have terrible road noise once you get over 45 miles per hour. Would you say that the Sentra is quieter on highways than the Kia Forte?
Totally agree. This new Sentra is just begging for a sportier version. Sr turbo or se-r or Nismo. Nissan you have to see this as a great opportunity to sell more sentras.
No way I’d go with a Sentra unless they give us a better engine/transmission combo. A 1.6t and 6MT would be good. Otherwise pass. Civic 1.5t, Forte 1.6t, Mazda 3 2.5L are all better options for me.
This looks nice, the interior is great. I'd choose the Jetta GLI over the SR premium. It's price is close to the GLI's, and I'd choose the performance of the GLI over the slightly better interior of the SR. The base model of this car beats a base model Jetta though.
Beautiful car and great bang for the buck....Unfortunately CVT is a major red flag for me. Every car with CVT that I've ever driven sounded like the engine was about to explode at any moment. If they had a manual version I'd spring for it.
Look is aggressive nice looking but power is underrated! What's up with the HIGH RPM? Nissan should have place a 2.3L/2.4L engine inside the new Sentra.
wow its 2 inches lower than the previous model? That just shows you how high it was in the first place, considering lowering my car 2 inches makes it touch curbs.
I have a question about the 2020 Sentra. I bought mine last week and found that when I start the car and drive, the alarm for the seatbelt goes off for a minute if nobody is in the passenger seat. Took it to Nissan and they said that the seatbelt in the passenger seat needs to be buckled if nobody is in it. I find it a bit annoying. Nissan said it was the way they built the car. It's a bit annoying to always having to buckle the seat when nobody is in it. Has anyone else had this problem? I find it very odd.....
That's not normal. This Sentra I drove never did that. It sounds like that dealer isn't very good and is lying to you, I'd try going to another one if you can.
Nissan's CEO is not that asshole who was embezzling money and was caught. Carlos was also making sure to produce as many cars with the least amount of money spent making them. Hopefully the new transition will help the brand and quality.
I like every new Nissan Sedan Versa through the Maxima. They have a great design. I like the Altima’s looks the best. I rented a 2019 and was impressed. Agree the rear view is limited though. I used the camera a lot for parking.
I'd say they're aimed at different buyers. The Corolla hatch has much less trunk space than the Sentra and the interior isn't as luxurious. Since I'm into sporty vehicles though, I'd definitely pick a manual Corolla hatch over the Sentra. For the average buyer, the Sentra is probably the better choice.
The CVT would be a deal breaker for me. For those who don’t mind it, sounds like this would be a good choice. I’d take a Veloster R-Spec or Corolla 6MT for the low 20 thousands, Mazda3 for the high 20’s.
I was wondering if anyone knew whether Nissan replaced or fixed the CVT’s on their cars. I don’t care much for the performance of the cvt but I know their older ones were very unreliable.
How do these compare to the original Curze ? I had a 2012 that I bought new. It thought it handled and rode great. The interior was oh so quiet and VERY comfortable. I could get 40mpg on long interstate jaunts.
I agree with everything in this review!! You seem like you have more energy with these recent reviews which makes them exciting to watch!! I don't know if you have thought of this but I think you and Beth should try "vlog" style reviews where you have more of a POV perspective on the interior, and I personally enjoy more interactive reviews like those, instead of having a fixed camera and some B-roll. Its less work too! I like the way you did a Bullitt update one time as well where you held the camera, and I think if you did that for these by walking around the vehicle with a camera in your hand they would seem more personalized. You could also try having new thumb nails where you are holding the camera so the buyers know you are in the video walking around the vehicle. I don't know maybe this is all confusing but hey doesn't hurt to give it a try! Thanks for all you do.
Thanks for the support Joe! I could try a vlog style, it just seems less polished and professional. I understand what you mean about it giving a more personal feel though and maybe it would switch things up more for those that are getting bored with the format. I'll give it some thought, thanks!
I really wish Nissan offered a turbo 4 in the Sentra along with a manual. it would let nissan take on some of the more performance oriented versions like the GLI Civic SI of the world.

It’s the best looking in the segment, tie with the Mazda 3.
The Mazda 3 is way quieter than the Sentra
That's right. It's the best looking car right now. But it would be better if they have the VC turbo engine as option for the SR trim.
Double that
Not bad actually. But I'll say that the new KIA Forte looks better in my opinion...
The 2020 Corolla LE sedan looks better IMO.
Dude I looooove the redesign on the Sentra! Great review couldn’t agree more with the styling. Probably best in class! Glad you enjoyed it just as much as me

How do these compare to the original Curze ? I had a 2012 that I bought new. It thought it handled and rode great. The interior was oh so quiet and VERY comfortable. I could get 40mpg on long interstate jaunts.
just wish it wasnt that underpowered.. maybe a bit more torque would make it more attractive.
Matt Maran Motoring Sure! I agree with less the professional aspect, and I actually prefer that.
Damn really good looking ever, it's nice than civic. I hope this will launch at Malaysia
reminds me of my Mazda 3 good job by Nissan
I really wish Nissan offered a turbo 4 in the Sentra along with a manual. it would let nissan take on some of the more performance oriented versions
like the GLI Civic SI of the world.
I had a 2016 sentra and the cvt was awful. Now im looking into getting a hatchback but I cant make up my mind on which one
I don't understand why people like you even bother watching nissan videos.
Great review Matt, does this Sentra have the dreaded start/stop system? And if so can you defeat it, cause that’s a deal breaker for me? Thanks
No start/stop. Nissan and Mazda are the few brands who are still holding out on that nonsense!
No start/stop at all! It was nice not to have it haha.
It doesn't feel like 9.2 to 60 mph?Do you mean it feels slower or quicker?
I hope the new Nissans got the JATCO Xtronic cvts right this time.
Interior is best
I would buy one of these instantly if it didn't have a CVT. Needs an auto and manual option.
I wanna know if this has rear independent suspension?
Yes it is
It looks pretty until it is sitting in the shop getting a new CVT, which will be around every 50,000 miles.
Is it a new cvt? Nissan cvts are notoriously bad on a 4 cylinder motor. Based on past performance I would never buy a nissan cvt.
Yes, this is the new 3rd generation CVT, different than the problematic one everyone talks about.
wow that is a great looking car
Looks good but they stuck with a CVT so that unfortunately hampers the redesign from being a great compact sedan...
Tell me that Nissan improved their CVT like Toyota and I’ll change my mind on how reliable their vehicles are
I mean he did say that it's one of the much better CVT's in this class.
Am I the only one that likes that key, the first thing that comes to mind when I see the key is the GTR
Looks? Love it.
Reliability?...what's that?
Power?...CVT.
Hotel? Trivago
