This is the most 80s music video to ever music video in the 80s ever. It does all the things. At all the times. And makes no apologies for itself. I remain obsessed with this video and have been since I first saw it as a kid during its original release. I love it with my whole heart.
this song is my generation this video taliking about dark and bright side of relationship while Bonnie sing the darkside the man tells there's hope just turn around the last part of video see Bonnie surround by 2 groups the black dress and the other is white dress in black groups Bonnie falling down and in white group bonnie is hug by angel
10:05 Bonnie's hairstyle , a very popular one in the 80s and up to the early 90s, was called either the "lion hair" or "cobra hair". Yeah, sturdy is the word! Lots and lots up hairspray was used to achieve such a massive hairdo!!
I'm so glad you put it here for everyone to enjoy! Oh my god, Joe, I love watching your face when you are watching this video! My favorite is when the little choir boy is lifted and moved towards her. It makes me laugh every time!😂😂😂😂 Her voice is amazing! It's all amazing! You boys are amazing!😊
I love the brothers, I’m Impressed by their knowledge given their age/generation, and their interest in 80s music. But I watch to stare at Mike who is just dreamy. 🤷🏽
Joe?!? Mike?!? I’m so glad you guys watched this video! Yes; Bonnie Tyler is from the UK. And this video is meant to be a dream like state from her point of view. She is haunted and tormented by her overwhelming desire for her all-male students which if you think about it, is very taboo! It’s funny how people get lost in the imagery of this video. It’s iconic in every way. In spite of the risqué meaning, this is an incredible song that is accompanied by a fantastic music video.
A little background to the song helps in understanding the video's imagery. According to Jim, the song was originally going to be titled "Vampires In Love" and was intended as part of a musical version of _Noferatu._
I've always loved this song, and only a few years ago I saw the video... I think it will be 1000 years from now and no one will understand it, it's so random, I love it!
"Total Eclipse" is one of my all-time favorite songs and video. For me, it speaks of the dark night of the soul. And the video, through its mesmerizing dream imagery, captures the struggle between corporeal seductions and spiritual tranquility. I would encourage you to watch Meat Loaf's just as lavish and charged "It's All Coming Back to Me Now." Jim Steinman wrote both.
You HAVE to see the literal video version as well! Meatloaf 'I would do anything for love', Eurythmics 'Sweet Dreams' and 'Total eclipse of the heart' are arguably the best literal videos I have seen, but Total eclipse of the heart is hands down my fave literal video of all time!
Now we're talking. Phenomenal song and an iconic video. Great to see the boys having so much fun reviewing this all time classic. I need to get me a pigeon!
I keep thinking it must have been inspired by the movie Gothic, but that wasn't until 3 years later. 😂 A bunch of people take drugs and run around a gothic mansion freaking out all night - the movie.
I’m a little late here, but this song was written by the great Jim Steinman who wrote Bat Out Of Hell with Meatloaf!! It was actually written for a musical ( of course! ) called Vampires In Love. It’s still produced in Europe, but never made it here in the States. If you listen to the lyrics- vampires make all kinds of sense. Tyler absolutely killed this song. An 80’s favorite!!
Very interesting and astute of them to compare it to Meatloaf. I've known and loved listening to this for decades now and never even made that connection lol
Jim Steinman later reused this song for the originally German-language musical Tanz der Vampire (Dance of the Vampires). The song is from the 80s, and was reused for the musical in the 90s. From Wikipedia: "Dance of the Vampires is a musical remake of the 1967 Roman Polanski film (known as The Fearless Vampire Killers in the United States). Polanski also directed the musical’s original German-language production (titled Tanz der Vampire). The music was composed by Jim Steinman, orchestrated by Steve Margoshes, and Michael Kunze wrote the original German book and lyrics." "Tanz der Vampire originally played from October 4, 1997, to January 15, 2000, at the Raimund Theater in Vienna, Austria." and "The musical score written by Steinman leans heavily on material from his earlier projects, mainly from his less-known shows like The Dream Engine and The Confidence Man (co-written with Ray Errol Fox), although it also features music from his widely known records like "Total Eclipse of the Heart" (remade as "Totale Finsternis") [...]" A link to watch the German version from the musical: ua-cam.com/video/QJURjF51LFE/v-deo.htmlsi=xDTQPeb16LpkdWqD Even if you don't understand the language, costumes and make-up are definitely worthwhile.
Total Eclipse Of The Heart is another James Richard Steinman Production (RIP), famous to be Meatloaf producer (Bat Out of Hell II: Back into Hell), Celine Dion (It´s All Coming Back To Me Now) and "Tonight Means To Be Young" by Fire Inc. ("Soundtrack Streets Of Fire"), this song reached the number 1 on Billboard Hot 100, nominated best female vocal at the Grammy's.The music video for "Total Eclipse of the Heart" was directed by Russell Mulcahy[26] and was filmed at the Holloway Sanatorium, a large Victorian Gothic hospital near Virginia Water, Surrey, England.[27] The surrealist video features Tyler clad in white, dreaming or fantasizing about students in a boys' boarding school. Young men are seen dancing and participating in various school activities and singing in a choir. The video received two nominations at the Billboard Video Music Awards in 1983 for Best Performance by a Female and Most Effective Use of Symbolism.[28] Bonnie Taylor born in Gales, and has two classic songs like "It´s A Heartache" and "I Need A Hero".
The video was directed by Russell Mulcahy, who directed so many 80's iconic videos for Duran Duran, Elton John, Spandau Ballet etc. He went on to direct films, Including Highlander.
Wales is part of the UK, therefore she is British! To me this is about a School teacher living out her fantasies over her boys in her dreams. At the end it appears one of her pupils in her dreams, appears in reality. Things were different in the 80's
I truly forgot how balls to the wall this video is! Epic song, amazing video. So many visuals and I've never really seen anyone take the time to really break down the video
I think she's having a weird dream the night before she begins a new job as a teacher at a posh boys school. The next day she is introduced to her class and realises it wasn't a dream... it was a premonition!
I'm so happy that you react to this song because I felt in love with it lately. In germany there is the theatrical musical called "Tanz der Vampire" (Dancing of the Vampires) that uses this song. The musical is very old and I was finally able to watch it a few weeks ago and I loved it so much. I knew this song already from Bonnie Tyler but the version from the musical (especially with the original cast) is stunning! Also because it's a duet there! I needed to point that out here even though you will probably never listen to it because it's german of course. but there is also the english version of it from the same cast here on youtube. Of course this song is amazing in every version but the german version is my favourite (and I usually don't like music in german)! EDIT: I need to add here that the english musical seems to be a little bit different compared to the german one
This song is epic. True Jim Steinman pearl. We should have a Jim Steinman top 5. PS: Jim Steinman also wrote and produced most of Meatloaf songs. Also "Nowhere Fast", "Holding Out For A Hero", "Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young" and Celine Dion's "All Coming Back To Me Now"
not only was this song used in a movie, it was an integral part of the plot, check out Frequently Asked Questions About Time Travel (2009) it's also just a fun movie to watch 😊👍
If you enjoyed this, you should react to the LITERAL version of 'Total Eclipse Of The Heart'. Its hilarious 😂😂😂 If you haven't seen it, please look it up. 😂
You need to watch Tonight Is What It Means To Be Young by Fire Inc. Featuring Diane Lane lip-synching to thew most epic song imaginable ( Written by this same guy )
I think it is about repressed sexuality. She is sexually attracted to the student(S) and knows she shouldn't be and the video is expressing that (insanely)
Now that I know this is about vampires I still don't get most of the imagery😂 Some parts of the lyrics and scenes do make sense but most don't think of vampires in a love sense when initially hearing this song. I guess you need to look at it more artistically. The song was originally suppose to be for a musical version of the 1922 vampire film "Nosferatu" and the song was initially called Vampires in love but the musical never happened
Such a gay opera ^^ but ICONIC :) Will you guys react to: Robyn Christine And The Queens Kate Bush Björk Neneh Cherry Tori Amos Garbage Annie Lennox Jessie Ware Goldfrapp Moloko FKA Twigs ?
The song was originally called Vampires in Love. Meatloaf's record company wasn't paying Jim Steinman, so he gave the song to Bonnie Tyler instead, much to Meatloaf's annoyance.

The smiles on your faces says it all!! This song is AMAZING!! 🤩
This. Yes.
Have seen this vid on multiple occasions but never quite remember how truly bonkers it is
I love how most of it almost seems like it makes sense in an extremely gothic boarding school, and then you get the stairs full of greasers 🤣
10:19 -- The lighting technique used for most of the shots (especially the way Bonnie's hair is "highlighted" by it) is called HALO LIGHTING.
I'm so glad you put it here for everyone to enjoy! Oh my god, Joe, I love watching your face when you are watching this video! My favorite is when the little choir boy is lifted and moved towards her. It makes me laugh every time!😂😂😂😂

the Australian bank, Westpac, used the song and had a Bonnie cameo in a commercial about a decade ago.

I've read its about vampire love
That is largely how I've read it too. It's a gothic romantic premonition, yeah.
The one who made this music video concept was the late songwriter Jim Steinman, one of the best american songwriters.
Actually, it's glitter that came out of the fencing guys mask. I just noticed that the other day.

It's the Soundtrack to the Musical Dance of the Vampires 😍
I'm telling my kids this was the original Umbrella Academy musical
The video is meant to have something to do with vampires but all I see is Bonnie trying to hook up with the students.
