Punk Inuit throat singer | Tanya Tagaq | TEDxMet
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- Tanya Tagaq accesses deep emotions and connections in her unusual and powerful performance.
Inuk punk Tanya Tagaq has given her visceral, elemental performances from Canada’s Northwest Territories to Carnegie Hall. Her unique vocal expression is rooted in Inuit throat singing, but expands well beyond traditional culture to incorporate electronica, industrial, and metal influences. Tagaq has collaborated with artists ranging from opera singers to experimental DJs, and been honored with a string of Juno nominations. Her latest CD, Animism, features Michael Red, a live programmer whose wild northern field recordings often serve as her de facto backing band.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

RuthlessGriz lol same I was watching meditation videos and I came on this
Me trying to sleep
My brain at 3am:
Ahah
LMAO!!!
I want to like this but it’s at 420.
It’s also funnier to me because I’m also Inuit.
yuó argey Lol
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
The amount of effort to produce those sounds at that rate is extraordinary. Her voice didn't crack at all, nor was she out of breath. I think people are confused because they're unaware of this demonstration of ability, and because it's not singing in the traditional sense.
You need to breathe in as much as you breathe out, and her mother or grandmother probably taught her therefore she’s had years of practice that has made her invincible to voice cracks
Croaking
I want to know what on earth it all meant. Because it’s obvious that woman was telling us a GREAT story in which she played all the parts!
no
Its pretty bad
I wanna crank this in my car with the windows down this summer..
lmao

Lol....
This comment made my day
I actually have. Its pretty incredible. The ranges her voice goes you can't hear on a phone. I truly recommend blasting this on a stereo.
@@redwillowcreations6919 What was peoples reaction?
I can’t believe some of these comments. Im indigenous, but I’m of a different tribe. I wholeheartedly embrace what she has to offer the indigenous music scene. She supports victims of abuse through her music. It’s her message. As someone who survived it, I love her.
Whatever she's expressing, it's beautiful and at times haunting. I had a feeling it was a wide range of emotions.
For the uneducated, this is actually Tagaq's own style of throat singing. No, traditional Inuit throat singing does not sound like Tuvan throat singing, but it's typically done as a duet because it was originally more of a game or competition. Tagaq's style is a solo version. Anyway, you don't have to put it on your iTunes playlist, but be respectful. Things aren't weird or bad just because they don't sound like what Westerners are used to. Even if it's not to your personal taste, I would think you could appreciate the fact that she's not ashamed of her culture instead of turning up your noses...
Nicolas Goldring YES! Mesmerizing, Bug Eyed Mesmerizing, But SCARY! The Inuit punk Vocal Version of Horror Night on Netflix 0.0 NOOOOOBody sleepin Tonight! Nope...0.0
ROFLMFAO, OMG... you DEFENDED this???? BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA... Just because it's on TEDX, doesn't make it legitimate or worthy of listening without a snort of derision at its stupidity.
^Thanks for your opinion that nobody wanted white lady.
Thanks for letting me know.
She is amazing, awesome, I loved it...
Anybody have lyrics?
Ok, i actually laughed at this. Good job.
Best comment on here.
Yikes! It’s difficult enough to catch the lyrics in Inuit drumming song! Let alone a hip-hop throat singer!
Lily Blackwell wooooosh
It’s ok Willi, Inuit is a rather diverse language that tends to change its ways from village to village
But the wooosh very much appreciated

😂😂😂😂😂😂
I think we just witnessed this woman channel two demons intently arguing and making love at the same time.

Nope. People can make two different sounds with their voice at once. Have you heard of over tones? Please do not compare traditional throat singing with this :/
she is most definitely possessed watch how her eyes have changed from the beginning of the video till about 7:54 and she keeps moving as if a serpent or snake spirit took over her
@@kaynicole59 What do you mean by "possessed" ? What you hear is how mother nature sounds...
@@woohooo7634 yeah, throat singing actually exists
I went to NSCAD with Tanya.... she was a legit weird person, in that beautiful doesn’t give a damn what anyone thinks and is authentic to who she is type of way that most people wish they had the gumption to be. I bet she eats the pseudo negative comments up, and uses people’s discomfort to propel her performances to the level that has gotten her where she is today. Belt it out, girl!
She did make music with Bjork
You sound like the weirdo. If you have nothing nice to say, just shut up. Easy.
@@summeronio9751❤
I can’t imagine her strength to do this without passing out. Human emotion without words. At first i was like third is weird..but that was because it’s unlike anything I have ever heard...but then I realized how hard that would be to do and how many sounds she’s making at the same time.
Exactly pure emotion and awesomeness!
It's called possed
Meagan Hiller finally a decent comment
Originally not so much music, not that it is much music now but cool, It was more a breathing game for when the men went out hunting and the first to run out of breath or laugh or break the cycle would lose.
I know right? Then I remembered the cases of studies about demonic possession and how they explain that people can actually activate the vocal chords differently and also use each one for a different tone to sound like there's more than one voice. I had no idea how this could be done until I heard this. Is very impressive the different sounds we can actually produce. Some throat singers can separate really well two diferent tones, like the tibetan throat singing, and their polyphonic overtone. It's so incredible.
All jokes aside, she has such an amazing use of vocal range and crazy good breath support. Really amazing artistry.
Unquestionable. 👍
You trolling
Anybody who do this should move to where no one else wants to live.... wait, they already do..... keep to yourself because that is not talent. Cultural < talent
@@MarioFGarcia I dont understand you. So Mongolian throat singers are not talented? Anything that is a bit different from regular way of singing (so basically sounds that your ears are familiar with) is bad? Listen to "love song" by inuit throat singers, its beautiful. And it's done this way because it was traditionally sung by two women putting their kids to sleep, vibrations from this kind of singing help with that :)
@@JustyMe I'm gonna take a look at that. ❤️
she has stylised her way of throat singing, the traditional way has two women preforming
Extremely grateful to hear this - how she hits those low registers, I'll never know - can hear the traditions she draws from & hope people outside that tradition can appreciate how special this is.
FastusMusic ahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
plumberfiddle what’s so funny they're appreciating the culture
@@dereknguyen2812 🙄
You have to be trained to be able to sing like that. If a regular singer tried to throat sing they would destroy their voice.
She’s using her false chords to get the extreme low notes. It’s how she’s doing the screams too. Anatomically they sit above the true vocal folds.
Mad respect to the Inuit culture. Ancestors 💪
🤘🏾thank you.
I totally understand how strange Tanya's music can seem. It is so raw and primal. I saw her in concert at Davis. With a simultaneous slideshow of the atrocites that have been perpetrated upon her people and all Native Americans, she gave a very visceral lament, a well needed and respectable lament true to her tribes! Afterward, she herself seemed exorcised from the group trauma inflicted upon her people. I think if more of us were to get in touch with the sounds that our insane world makes us feel, we could free ourselves from a lot of trauma.

I use to do this when I was younger. Had no idea I was throat singing.
All music comes from tribal people just making random sounds then expanding on it to make it sound good. If humans can make the sound, some culture has most likely made it into music.
I also get the impression that the animal kingdom is an inspiration for these styles of singing 👍
Me too I was called crazy . I m not crazy after all. My sister would assist me till we broke laughing my mom hated it. My father laughed about it but made us stop enough he would say. Now you know where bjorn comes from.
My parents also thought it was bad for the throat and I use to scare my baby sister like that.

She takes root , touches the sky , then shares the vibes.
Nature's forces incarnate.
I am thankful to bear witness to such talent.
Not just an incredible range of pitch and sound quality, but she's created a whole new form of performance. Is it song? Is it theatre? Is it storytelling with sounds? Whatever it is, it's powerful and very impressive.
She is an Inuk throat singer. If you do not know First Nations are the Native Peoples of Canada. Nothing new she is just reclaiming her heritage that was taken from her people and adding modern elements.
I can't comment on the Inuit throat singing since I am not Inuit or familiar with it to speak about it. What I will say is coming from not knowing anything about a controversy over her style, when I saw "Punk" as part of the description I knew it would be far from traditional. I found it compelling and captivating. I saw that she was at that moment free of the weight of social expectations and released into the experience. To be able to channel all those emotions, those otherworldly beings and be that free is a gift most of us do not experience in our life. I am taking away from this inspiration to find my own freedom of expression to release myself.
I'm sure she said Instagram at 8:55, lol
An then taco bell
vanessa walterson then chicken nuggets
She talkin about some hubba bubba at 2:52 too lol
Yes I heard it too 😂
This is genius
The fuck is wrong with this comment section?! She's fucking awesome! She's like a living beatbox/SFX machine! I'd love to have her to do backdrop ambiance/rhythm in a recording. It doesn't match the western definition of "singing", but that doesn't mean it isn't singing. Can you not see the storytelling element going on here? She's also voice-acting! Playing more than one role at the same time! With NO backup so you can better focus on her performance, which is the topic! So sod off you uneducated tarts, I like it! I actually GET your cultural contribution ms. Tagaq, and thanks for assisting Bjork with the album that is currently in my car CD player! We're all from the same weird universe, and I like your corner of it fam!
8:58 "taco bell"
I truly love how uncomfortable this made me feel. Why do I feel so weird and awkward watching this beautiful expression of song and emotion?
This is zombie vocals
Because you've been brainwashed, I think that nature is something different when that is exactly what we are part of.
Same honestly, at first I felt bad for feeling awkward but that's just because it's not like anything most of us have heard. Though the comments are claiming this is not traditional Inuit singing but moreso her own interpretation it's still so unique to anything I've heard
So this is what the deep end of the internet sounds like.
Yep... I fell down the rabbit hole
8:53 for the raptor impression.
Extraordinary talent. Honestly I've never seen anything so guttural and raw and if you listen shes tells a story with her vocals. Unbelievable

I really want to see her do a collaboration with Björk?
Bob Brown already done. check out Medulla.
Bob Brown she worked on Medulla with Björk. Check out the song "Ancestors"
She has. and it's great
Exactly what I thought
Comes as no surprise that they collaborated. I kept thinking that the only other woman that I could name off the top of my head who frees herself and her voice like she did here onstage is Bjork.
Question is how is Simon Cowell going to react to this one?
E M S so is J-Lo, I don’t get how these people who can’t actually sing and have no musical talent, are judges on singing competitions
There's actually a throat singer Mongolian who auditioned and he's the only who understood the man.
she literally put every fiber of her being into that.
Strangely interesting but if you blasted this at a dark metal concert , I wonder of the reaction. Very unusual.
It's impressive how she can swing back and forth between the throaty and the type of vocal sounds we're more used to, keep the rhythm and breathe... and she kicks it into a whistle-type sound too. It's also impressive that she's sharing her personal take on her culture. I can barely share my pop songs... and they're just pop. Kudos to her!
Can't we just keep all our opinions back for a second to admire the courage it must take to present oneself like that on a stage?
i got the the bit where she was like hamaa *breath *hamma i was like fuck this im out :P
she was doing that as i read this comment
Although Inuit throat singing probably originates from the Tuva or other Mongolian peoples, it changed drastically over the millenium. One of those changes is that it is mostly done by the women and usually 2 women together. For those of you who think her music is "weird", etc. Might I remind you that it DOES say PUNK in the description. Punk in any musical form is not for everyone. Her art is unique.
Silverbirch1 like the performance "artists" who use body fluids in their "art". 🤢
It's not punk that's for sure. Do people think if they throw punk at the beginning of a performance it will explain random behaviour and sounds?
It’s one thing to hear it in some Bjork tracks, but seeing how she does it live is 😻

I don't know if I am impressed by some of the inhuman sounds she made, or just feel weird from listening to this. I Guess both. It was like a demonic mating call.
She hyperventilates and goes into trance-like space! Sacred performance...
"Sacred" isn't the word I would use to describe it.
This woman is fantastic - the brave freedom of expression is amazing. I listen and watch and think; here she is modern and ancient - and would have no worries being in the wild anywhere.

I have no idea what the story behind the song is, but it made me think of prey being hunted by predator. Caught off guard, just barely getting away, and eventually getting caught and consumed as a simple fact of natural life
I was blessed to see her live at the Lenape Powwow in NYC last weekend and she blew the venue out of the water. Her performances are like being taken down a rabbit hole. It is shadow work. It evokes what we are all destined for if we are to grow and expand.
So many people say 'demonic,' or possessed, or 'like The Exorcist.' These comments look like a consistent trend. It's embarrassing.
She has another level of human honesty. There's something people can learn, if they're brave enough. She's performing it here - she knows something we don't. Sure, you can hear it, and then run away... and make a cute comment to keep distance... or you can hear it and listen, and keep listening.
She's a very deep artist. She's giving us a gift.
She deserves SO much respect. She's barefoot, giving a solo performance of extremely emotional material, in a medium that's not recognised. She has an incredibly strong heart.
i just realized she is on Bjork's album, Medulla. She is amazing!!!

Herb Superb It’s the making fun of her culture for me
☝️🍆🤏
Hey look, this might not be your thing...but remember, she represents her tribe, her people, and they aren't interested in what 'your thing' is. They are interested in representing what their tribe and their history and their needs happen to be. If she represents an expression of that, no matter what I happen to think of her art, she shares a really important thing with us. Honor it for what it is, and then move on or adore it.
If they, like you say, do not care what "our thing" is, why should we care about theirs?
Isnt a lot of practitioner of inuit throat singing itself werent impressed by her version?
They wasted a good Ted talk for bullshit.
In Canada, the natives are happy that our government gives them tax exemption for having "one-drop" of native blood - I'm not fuckin kidding. If your ancestors a few generations back raped and impregnated a native and you can prove it, you can become a member of the First Nations.
