Hope they salvaged the projector, those things still produce an insane 70mm 18k image. I heard their building a new one close by and I hope they include the old projector with the new like they did in Vancouver. Thanks for the video, last time I was there was on an elementary school Feild trip!
Thanks for the vid... I was visiting a few years back and thought I'd ask if I could see the projection booth... and they were more than happy to show me while running an IMAX movie... very cool to see the 70mm film, lamp and platters in action. You can see the red pump truck that they used to move the film patters in the video. Sad to hear of it's demise.
I worked as a projectionist for 10 years, both film and later digital. I LOVED every second of it! It was a blast if you are good at it.. if you are not, well, i saw people have nervous breakdowns . Lol
No IMAX theatre should be abandoned. We need more of them. Cinema needs to be revived with the best technology to compete with modern TV's and home cinema audios...
I don't think that table was for rewinding the film, I think it was probably for constructing the film. IMAX film is 70mm and if memory serves, films were shipped in pieces and had to be cut back together on site. The final feature length film was so heavy and large, it required fork lifts or teams of people to move. The rewinding mechanism would be part of the platter the film was run off of into the projector (kinda sad none of that vintage equipment is still there).
70mm Imax film prints are shipped to the cinima on reels containing about 3 mins and 30 seconds of film a normal length film can easly arrive in boxes with 40 plus reels , yes the table is used for the process of building the film.. ua-cam.com/video/Rqb5oKhXif8/v-deo.html
@soundstructuremediamade perfect sense and comparing humans to animals and insects is illogical because we can literally repurpose things we have the ability to actually think logically and don’t compare us to wildlife as humans are the most wasteful without reasons only reason an animal “waste things” is due to threats of other animals or humans, we’re number 1 for destroying the environment!
It's sad to see this place abandoned. 70mm IMAX is so rare, and most IMAXes you find nowadays are just your standard premium large format screen competing with Cinemark XD etc, nothing really special. I guess it just got old and showed only one movie, but it would have been cool if they'd upgraded it and shown other things to keep it commercially competitive.
the problem with IMAX is the expense. Yup, it's crazy expensive even compared to regular 35 MM that's been in theaters for the last 75 years. Not only is the film expensive, but so is all the gear necessary to shoot in this format, and show it to an audience. Not everyone is willing to cough up the extra $$ for the experience.
It would have been cool to see all the old iMax equipment still left over up close. Sad that the speakers and sound system are all just left there to rot. Maybe they’re already no good. But 20 000 watts of sound must have been banging at one point. A shame it couldn’t be salvaged.
If I was a worker doing that job I would of taken all the speakers, amps, lighting, lighting amps, maybe even air conditioning units and sell or keep them, givin the owners didn't lay claim to them. That's like $20000 or more worth of usable used priced equipment from what I saw.
Yes, you should take your time and stop to film things properly. Your viewers can't really appreciate what you're filming if you don't take the time to film properly... that's the basic rule of filming.
I'm glad they're re-opening this Summer, but that pyramid building was so distinct and the Greg Frewin Theatre won't be the same. According to the website the screen was six stories high I guess the new building can accommodate that lol
I highly doubt it there isn’t a building being constructed in the tourist area for that big of a screen but I could be wrong or maybe it’s gonna be in an existing building
Note to the producer of this video: fix your sound! I understand, you whispered when you were recording, but there’s plenty of ways to boost the sound in post before you publish the video.
Agree- was very hard to make out dialogue. Best to record a voice track during editing.(keep the live track for reference but re-dub a good quality voice track)
I’m disturbed at the idea of such an amazing and expensive facility left in ruin. Even if another IMAX theater were being built, the concert/stage hall this could make…what an astonishingly unproductive waste.
This whole site looks like a sad waste. So much of that looks like it could have another life as is! But to bulldoze it then separate and salvage the 'waste' is painful for me to see. Best wishes from an Englishman making armour in a French forest. 👍⚒️🇬🇧🇨🇦
There should be some 50 or 60 speakers behind that screen, as well as more than that scattered around the building, for just the one theater. Including 8-ft High racks full of power amplifiers and a custom digital audio processor designed to decode the IMAX audio into thx.
Really sad to see the speakers left inside. I hope someone saved most of them, and the DMX stuff. BTW the video is unbearably shaky! I skipped through most of it but still got dizzy from it. Please do something about that in the future.
The screen is actually pretty valuable, depending on what type it is, some are like a diamond pattern to reflect the light correctly, others are just garbage canvas type stuff.
Thats such a bucket list thing i've always wanted to do Bring a projector to an abandoned theater and watch a movie in it.. Id have to pick a movie like Blade Runner or something else really dreamy and surreal to play in an abandoned theater to watch... One big question tho is, how would you get power to the projector?
@@colemorningstar Thanks for the information. It had to be something like that. The real estate value probably exceeded the income producing potential of the original Imax site.
How does a Imax theatre get abandoned. Did they build it far away from where people actually live, assuming people would go out of their way to get there?
Very nice! Wow, cognitive dissonance ... an IMAX being demolished, wtf? That volume of area up above, from the catwalk, is a functional space for acoustics. It's a bass trap. Those thick fiberglass tiles on the face of that mammoth volume of air, it's a textbook bass trap. LF trapping is for tighter, faster low frequency decay times. The product being bass clarity, impact, and overall delineation. Those loudspeakers should be salvaged. One would think the seating may be salvaged. Cool vid Much appreciated
Why did it get abandoned? Was it not enough profits so they have to move or is the building starting to decay & they don't have the money for maintenance? Looks alright to me, why would they need to expand at another building? They should have turned this one into a movie theater to make more profits that way. Or for special events. Move the Niagra film/exhibit to the other place as planned & then turn this original building into a movie theater because that giant screen would be a great attraction there.
its too bad those expensive DMX light controllers and lights were all left in there without being reclaimed for use in at least an amateur's interests :/
Probably went bankrupt and usually a total loss is not worth salvaging. Depends on what entity owns the real estate as to what would happen to the site.
To be fair it seems like the building was not really an engineering nor aesthetic masterpiece- more like a metal tent in the middle of a field of tar parking lot. I do hope the IMAX equipment lives on either installed elsewhere or as spares to keep others running. Wonder what speakers those were.
@@colemorningstar Just a tip - it was hard to make out dialogue. Best to keep your original audio for reference but re-dub your voice over the final edit file.
A little weird, not creepy though. Must have been constructed in the earlier days of IMAX, because compared to anything new, it would have had to have been highly inferior. The outside of this place just reeks of "not impressed".

This is so sad. It breaks my heart to see a theater just abandoned like this that too 70mm IMAX screen which is rare nowadays.

The projector was gone night one so they definitely saved it can’t wait to see the new location
projectors or at least the main components of it are the first to go when a theater closes.
Sometimes they don’t even own it and it goes back to the leasing company.
@@colemorningstar Now the parts in use in the 31 theaters left in the world showing Oppenheimer.

As soon as I saw the thumbnail, I realized I'd been there. And saw a movie there. Wow.
There's only 30 of these 70mm IMAX theaters left in the world, sad to see that massive and unique screen destroyed like that.

They could have filled every seat at every showing of Oppenheimer. Every seat virtually sold out every show of the 31 theaters left.
Oppenheimer should be shown here for 1week only. Ticket machines and food served outside.
614 seats to be exact.
Thanks for the number it was amazing
