Apologies for some muffled dialogue with some of my audio. It was extremely windy outside because of how large the open spaces are surrounding IMAX, and inside, those projectors are extremely loud! Some say that I'm somewhat on brand with Christopher Nolan movies experiencing slight audio issues... anyway, I hope you enjoy this behind the scenes look of IMAX!

Just watched Oppenheimer in dual laser 1.43 and again in 15/70. I highly, highly, highly recommend seeing it in film. The digital presentation was fantastic, but the 15/70 format just cannot be beat in terms of sharpness. It really is the gold standard.

I live near the IMAX theater they just built in Pooler, Georgia (it’s really really close to the size of this one, 23.2m by 30.7m), and it’s one of two GT auditoriums in our state. They don’t have a film projector (theater itself is a “small” family owned and they probably couldn’t justify the cost of the film projector on top of the dual 4K projectors like in this video with how few films are released on film now). They do an outstanding job of taking care of their facilities though, which unfortunately the other GT IMAX in our state can not say… That one is owned by the Regal Cinemas (theater chain) at the Mall of Georgia and it does have the 70mm IMAX but Regal cheaped out and only put one of the 4K digital projectors in it (apparently that’s something regal has done with most of if not all of their IMAX theaters). That makes it incapable of showing digital only movies in the full imax aspect ratio, on a screen that’s significantly smaller (18.1m by 24.8m), in an auditorium that isn’t in as good of a shape as pooler (and doesn’t have recliners). So would have been pick either one of the biggest screens in the world in a nicer auditorium but it’s digital (still 1.43:1 though) or see it in a worse auditorium but it’s on film (but on a smaller screen)… No clear choice for movies like Oppenheimer, definitely a clear choice for digital only films like Dune though, since Pooler is the only one of the two that can do digital 1.43:1)

We actually have a 1570mm IMAX screen here measuring 21x29 metres, so along with the one in Melbourne I believe this is the second one of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. The theatre called Keong Mas (Golden Snail) is located in a theme park owned by the Government of Indonesia, so the movies on show are documentaries and educational topics for students. Kind of reminds me of what happened with Animal Crossing and Doom Eternal. I have family up in Pennsylvania so it's definitely not my first time going to the state, but as soon as I saw that King of Prussia was getting a 1570 screening I felt like I had to try to go there because by the time I started going to the theater everything already switched over to digital projection so it's nice to be able to go see a movie protected from film. Plus Maryland got robbed when it comes to IMAX screens, we only have the smaller multiplex style IMAX screens outside of the state science center. I lived in London in the 1970s when all cinemas had only one screen except for the Academy 1,2 and 3 in Oxford St which introduced me to arthouse and European movies. I first worked at the Classic Cinema in Piccadilly Circus which had previously been a "Circlorama" cinema in the 1960s. When I worked there (as trainee manager) the auditorium was still in a circular layout and the projection room, (which had previously contained 11 projectors), still surrounded the circular auditorium. Easy Rider had it's British premiere here in 1969 and ran for over 9 months, running continuous sessions over 10 hours every day. I saw a 1570 3D presentation at the BFI IMAX way back in 2000 when my friend was technical manager for BFI. I was lucky to get a private behind the scenes look at the 1570 projection system. I lived in Melbourne 1987-1997 (no IMAX then but my local was the Astor which was always a special treat - and luckily still is today after facing demolition a few years back). I was in Melbourne again in Jan 2020 when I saw 1917 at Museum IMAX. The trailer for Tenet was in 1570 but 1917 was in digital IMAX, which was great but a little disappointing watching the picture shrink down from 1570 to digital IMAX. It's heartening to see Melbourne has kept the 1570 projector and disappointing that our new IMAX in Wellington (Lower Hutt, NZ) is not 1570 capable.

I thought that this might be a limitation of the 4K setup there. I hope that when I get to see Oppenheimer there in 15/70 (if I can ever get tickets) that the picture fills the screen entirely. Are there any comments on this from those in the know that have visited Melbourne? So this is where it gets a little bit confusing and technical with the "IMAX" terminology. Mission impsossible expands to at most 1.9:1 or 16:9, which is the full width of the sensor available filmed digitally. This would take up approximately 70% of the full IMAX Melbourne screen. Movies like Dune, filmed in Opengate on the Alexa 65, are digital films, that also do take up the full 4:3 screen, alongside IMAX film prints 1570MM like Interstellar, Dunkirk, Oppenheimer etc...
So what you experienced wasn't necessarily a limitation of the IMAX screen, but more so the camera the movie was shot on. Most movies can only display at 2.39:1, which is less than 16 by 9, the graphic I showed at 3:45 perfectly showcases this!

seems like you saw it in "Digital IMAX" - yes the original 70mm IMAX used film (Like Oppenheimer at the Melbourne IMAX) and the screen was bigger. "True IMAX" is called 1570mm IMAX because the film is 70mm wide (as opposed to conventional 35mm film) and it has 15 perforations per frame as opposed to 4 perforations per frame for 35mm film. I had a similar experience as you some years ago. I had seen original 1570 IMAX over 20 years ago and about 10 years ago went to an IMAX cinema again, thinking that digital IMAX would be so much better than 70mm film IMAX. I was so disappointed. And the thing is the exhibitors, while promoting "the all new Digital IMAX" didn't really tell people that the picture on the screen was actually smaller.

Something that almost anyone will notice is the aspect ratio. In smaller formats, you're literally going to be missing parts of the background details. Obviously, Nolan would be cognizant of people not being able to see the full frame, so the details that are cut out by smaller aspect ratios won't be totally necessary, but they'll still exist.
