Just did a timing job on a 2006 F150. Removed the 15MM nuts and bolt on the body and radiator support mounts and jacked up the cab on the passenger side a few inches. The valve cover slipped right off. Also makes replacing a soon to be rusted out transmission dipstick tube easy at the same time.
I saw that floppy chain and thought...your top passenger side chain guide is GONE! 😂 That's what ai just found but I removed the front cover first, so.. Well thank you! This video gives me hope.
An epiphany occurred for me when i realized you can unbolt the ac accumulator from the firewall and fender and move it off those two bolts without draining or unhooking the ac system. Gave me that extra inch of clearance that let me get that valve cover off without hating life...too much.
Just did the complete timing job on my 2010 F-150 Lariat. Its no cake walk but is a job which is methodical. Worst part for me was the oil pump pickup bolts when having changed the oil pump. Power steering bolts are a little miserable. Why I did mine is I had a ticking on startup which almost went totally away after a few minutes. The passenger side chain tensioner had let go and the chain was loose. The cam followers had no wear. The cams were not worn. This is not a job for the faint of heart as it took me over 4 days to complete this job between other chores. I feel for you in the struggle of this job but it is not impossible. Just takes time and patience.
I'm doing my 2004 F150 4x4 Lariat. Just got the plugs done (all 8 - NO breaky!)... I didn't have to remove the fender well to get all the valve cover screws out. The rear two near the firewall were actually pretty easy to get to once you remove the PCM and get the wiring tucked out of the way. The two screws right behind the spring tower on the other hand... I really wish I wasn't cursed with such large hands! Good thing my Wife's hands are nice and tiny! She's the daughter of a pro-mechanic, and doesn't mind getting dirty, so that worked well. Now I'm in the middle of the valve cover battle. It's all loose, but that &$!^*&^$! A/C dryer is in the way. I have to do the timing crap too, so I may wait until I have everything else off. Kinda like to get that valve cover off first though... I think I have a few lifters doing the funky-chicken. If I need to order them, I'd like to get them on the way while I tackle the front cover. I can see pieces of at least one chain guide, so I'm probably going to have to pull the pan too. NOT looking forward to that. I guess that's my penance for not breaking any spark plugs! So far the job has been going pretty good. Thanks for the vid!
So I have been told that on a 2004 F150 you cannot remove the passenger side valve cover without discharging the AC and taking off the A/C dryer. Just wondering if you were able to get it off?
Almost glad you found the slack on the passenger side. Nothing is more painful than doing a job like this and the old parts look as good as the new ones.😰
Just did the timing job. Truck started smooth. I had to wrestle the passenger side valve cover three times gasket kept falling. Now finally got it on and it’s leaking in the rear. Torquing is a nightmare
Just finished up my 2007. The 20 minute VTC solenoid swap of the passenger side turned into a multi-day ordeal. Of course they made the seal hole smaller, because ~reasons~. Helpful hint for those who need to remove the valve covers to swap them over: lift the cover just enough to remove them BEFORE trying to take the valve cover off all the way. Tilted back you should be able to use a long torx to get to their screws, then pull it up and out from under the covers. Same in reverse: get the cover mostly in place THEN feed the solenoid up under the cover and into it's spot, and tighten down through the seal hole. Lastly I put the VTC seal on AFTER the valve cover was back in place. It is virtually impossible to remove and replace the valve covers otherwise, unless you take the AC components out. Was a miracle that I managed to get the passenger side cover back in solo, and not bugger up the new valve cover seal as I did it.
I’ve been watching your UA-cam videos, Iast year or so. I enjoy each and every single one of them. You do put a lot of effort with the different views we get on the cameras. Even the simplest of things you include it. Good job👍👍
You give more information than most. What I would say is to include year, and maybe explain differences between years. For example, my 07 f150 has a smaller hole for the vct solenoid than the 04-06 models, which I have to take the valve cover off to replace. You are the most helpful video I could find to do that.
I have a 2001 ford e250 van it was a pain in the ass doing valve covers. Expect to spend some hours doing job and i could go on about the other repairs on this van many times losing your patients on this you will never want to work on another ford van again.
Man, my situation is I was literally having a small tapping noise me being a dumbass. I thought it was an exhaust leak so I guess I ignored it for another two weeks. And then my truck started running funny. One of my roller followers came off on the passenger side literally just came off. My question is is it easy to buy a new one and slip it right back into place? Or do I need special tools?
Yhe driver side valve cover breather is clogged I tryed blowing air threw it. But nothing. Also noticed the friver side looks darker. Should the breatner be free flowing?
Dude, this was really helpful. Thanks for putting it together. That passenger side valve cover. Man, I will be glad when its done. In the middle of mine, almost done. Hoping putting it back in is EASIER, but probably not. Keep on keepin on!
I flipped out on mine last year and did a timing job and the kicker was I pinched the gasket when I installed it back in and a week later had to do it again 🤬

I'm doing this job right now and I feel your pain. My problem is 1. limited space on the passenger side to work on ( truck is on ramps in a 10x20x8 ShelterLogic garage) and the 3 bots you were accessing from the wheel well, yeah, ROTTED the fuck out, so an 8mm socket just turns. So, it looks like I have my work cut out for me lol
@@untamedfeast ... or just weld a 13mm nut onto them. I ended up doing that on six of the bolts (the three on each side just above the exhaust manifolds). Plus turbosockets on a few others.

I came here for the emotional support. My gaze kept drifting between my sledge hammer and the truck.... If the valve cover is this hard to remove..... FFS.... Thanks all, I'm feeling a little better now haha
Been there...I'm doing full timing and put a new oil pump in behind timing chains on crank...you will have fun with thoes bolts...but I am in the middle of the passenger side ..gonna say fuvk it and remove all AC stuff, fender well and tire, I have to pull the cams and the rollers under them so might as well have room. Well, without a lift and shop tools anyways, just a dude in his garage
So it seems like the driver's side valve cover is a lot easier to remove. I have to replace the PCV valve and it's built into the cover, unfortunately. Is this something a rookie can replace? They quoted me $650. I feel like I can do it myself
I'm fighting with this right now. Had 2 bolts round out on me and had to buy a welder to weld nuts on the rounded heads to get them out. It worked and it was my first time using a welder. lol. Now trying to get the damn passenger side valve cover off. I have a 2010 F150 V8. There's a wiring harness in the way at the rear and havening issues seeing where it's going. It was 33 degrees in the garage and I called it quits. Will continue in a couple days. At this point, I kinda wish I had just paid a shop to do it. I would have had my truck during the snowfall last weekend. But, I've learned a lot and I now have a welder! lol.
Are you going to upgrade the oil pump? I just saw another UA-cam vid that there is an aftermarket oil pump available for that engine that is supposed to address issues associated with oil circulation for that engine
I just did this, have it installed, now waiting on new phasers from Ford, and pulling off the cams to do timing right with new chains and all new timing gear
