    This is very straightforward and informative video. Josh is very well spoken and has a clear and articulate style. Can't understand the 16 thumbs down except that some people are disappointed in their selection of a video that didn't help them in their particular situation. I would guess they should be giving themselves a thumbs down and not this video. It's well done.

    My frost free freezer was icing up because somehow a bread bag tie had blocked the drain hole on the inside of the freezer. Removing the internal evaporator/fan shroud, defrosting the freezer quickly using a separate fan and removing the foreign material solved the problem for me. Thanks for the video even though this message is a decade late!

    Thanks for the video, it was very informative. For my model of Bosch freezer, the heating coil is spec'd at 192W and 115V which works out to about 70 Ohms.

      Nick Buroojy Hi Nick, We produced these videos primarily for a European audience using a 220 - 240 volt supply. As your supply to the fridge is 115 volts the resistance has to be considerably lower to produce the same power so the figure you gave is correct for your unit and will be similar for any unit designed to run on 110 - 120 volts. :-)

      hi I have a hotpoint Ff187l fridge freezer and the fridge was not working but the freezer was it is a frost free. when I opened the back panel of the freezer it was all iced up and the first time I did it I used a hair dryer to defrost it and it started working. The second time after 3 weeks the problem happened so when I opened it up in defrosted it with a hair dryer but this time the hole was blocked with ice and it is working fine and it the second day touch wood it is okay so can you tell me what it can be. Other thing is my cooker hood stop working and my wife does a lot of cooking. It started to play up when the cooker hood stopped.

      As shown in the video above, frost free appliances have there cold area behind a cover that will ice up but are then defrosted by the heater. There are two or three possible reasons for your problem.
      1: Check the defrost element on the radiator has continuity with a meter and replace if faulty.
      2: Check the door seal has no gaps allowing excess air into the machine.
      3: Ice comes from moisture in the air. A lot of cooking and poor ventilation will increase ice build up so improve ventilation.
      4: This particular fridge was not great at defrosting and there were modifications by the manufacturer fitting a larger heater and heat shield. May be worth checking with the manufacturer if this is needed.

    Bought a new defrost timer that works perfect but, the coils are "always" frozen up!?
    Also, both the freezer and fridg settings has to be on the warmest setting!?
    This is a whirlpool top freezer.
    What causes this?
    Awesome video. Thanks so much. GOD bless.

    Further to my post below. Just seen one of your other excellent videos stating that this problem is probably caused by a blocked drain hole, which is what I thought it was. Just cant figure this out as the hole is clear. Don't expect miracles from a distance, but if you can think of anything else I can check, I would be grateful.Many thanks.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      +Mike Lewis If the drain is clear the likely cause (especially when full) is if packaging from produce touches the wet wall as this will wick water onto the shelves and into the base. Make sure nothing is allowed to touch the back.

    Thanks, Josh, nice informative video!! Ice and water [freezer door] dispenser rendered inoperative, from frost build-up in door. Have to assume heater is open!

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      +genuineuni On some Samsung appliances the water cooler is often reservoir mounted behind the salad bins in the fridge. If there is a defrost problem with the fridge evaporator this can lead to the water freezing.
      Alternatively on some machines like LG's they can have a tank in the insulation of the door that has a heater to ensure it does not freeze. If the heater fails again this can lead to ice and may require a new door.

      +eSpares Thanks for the info. This is an OLD fridge (copper-tone). Actually, without notice, the manufacturer initially sent service people out to replace the compressor or a motor. Maybe they found signs of overheating; wanted to protect their reputation and avoid lawsuits. Other than that, it has been a very good fridge. Got tired of the light blowing in the small exterior door (fridge side), replaced it with LED. If I need parts, I'll visit eSpares. Thanks, again.

    Thank you i appreciate your feedback....all the standard compact refrigerator/ freezers that u can buy at walmart or any other dept store have temp control switches similar to standard home 2 door refrigerator freezer. Its just a switch controlled by temperature via a long probe. I just dont know the cut in cut out temp for the switch to know if the probe needs to be put in the fridge or freezer ....when mounting it in a home refrig freezer....

      If originally attached to a evaporator on an ice box the 'new' thermostat is not likely to open until the capillary cools below freezing. This may cause everything to freeze unless you can directly attach it to the new evaporator.

    What Is a thermostat in a refrigerator or a frost-free commercial freezer

  • @streambeo8077
    @streambeo8077 4 роки тому

    Had the same problem with a Zanussi as in the Fridge not cooling but the problem was that the vent behind the evaporator in the freezer was iced up. You can find out if this is your problem by opening the fridge door and holding closed the door switch and see if you can feel any cold air coming from the vent under the fridge light (this will only happen if the compressor is running), if no air is flowing open the freezer door and if the cold air starts to flow from the vent then the vent at the bottom left of the fridge that goes to behind the evaporator in the freezer is blocked with ice. An easy fix is to remove the vent cover in the fridge and blow hot air with a hair dryer (at fast speed) directly into the vent for about 5mins. This should melt the ice at the end of the vent and allow the air to flow again.

    Great video and very informative. My Westinghouse fridge freezer is always too cold, being the fridge is often -7 and freezer -19. regardless of the digital control settings, where do I find the thermostat and/or is it a fault in the control boards

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      Geoff Bryce Hi Geoff, We don't really see Westinghouse appliances but speaking in general terms a lot of the fridge freezers do not have an evaporator in the fridge but use some cold air from the freezer ducted to the fridge. These use a 'letterbox' type shutter to control how much cold is allowed in. If this has stuck it would continue to allow the cold air in and freeze accordingly so look for this flap (usually at the top) and check if it is frozen or stuck. The flap may be controlled by a motor or a bi metal strip on a manual thermostat inside.

I have a side by side RS21DLMR and the two interior lights in the refrigerator side are not working so I changed the bulbs (+ tested them) then realized that the original bulbs were still working. I also checked the center connectors behind the blue plastic circular cover in the center console to make sure they clicked shut. However, the freezer light is working. The triangular sensor on the upper right which responds to the right door also looks ok. Please advise how I might fix this problem. Thank you for your help.

    Does frost-free refrigerator never stop running?
    I noticed mine always running without stopping. I thought the thermostat would cut-off if the refrigerator achieved its target temperature.
    But mine, if it is not cooling, it would be defrosting. My kill-a-watt meter tells me that the unit is running a total of 22 hours per day. So, only 2 hours of rest where it won't consume energy. Needless to say, it consumes high kWh/day too.
    Temperature is set to MIN and I seldom open the door too. It had the best energy efficient rating (used in my country). So, I don't know what is going on.

      This is what I don't understand, I have A indesit Total no frost fridge freezer and the fan seems to keep running around every half hour. The fan cuts off when I open the door. I'm thinking to take the fan out and change it with a energy efficient silent computer fan and see what happens 😂 however I'm thinking it might be the thermostat

    • @eSpares

      Hi Khairun, a frost-free appliance will not normally run continually, the compressor will run as long as required to maintain the correct temperature inside the fridge & freezer. It will automatically defrost during this time and depending on the model the fan will continue to run to supply cold air throughout the freezer & into the fridge that said if there is a problem with the system it may run much longer to maintain the right temperature inside, do you have any problems inside the fridge or freezer with food going off?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  4 роки тому +1

      Hi TOBES MUSIC, the fan inside is supplying airflow to both the freezer and the fridge and will need to run continually unless it has reached the correct temperature in both, this is normal and does not indicate a problem.

    • @takagi2463
      @takagi2463 4 роки тому

      @@eSpares Appreciate your kind response. No local technicians here are interested to fix a refrigerator that 'cools too much' : ( . So I have to figure this out myself somehow.
      Nothing wrong with the food in freezer&fridge, though the freezer compartment does look like it 'over-freeze' everything to a stone despite the knob is at MIN. (But I don't have a thermometer, so the observation isn't really objective).
      With my constant observation, it seems like everything else works normally. It cools normally & defrosts normally. Freezer&Fridge's fan is working normally too.
      The compressor will shut off only when it is defrosting; and when it isn't defrosting, the compressor would constantly run as if this thing has no thermostat.
      Total run time for both defrost cycle & compressor is 22 hours per day (on the best day). On the worst day, the total run time is 24 hours per day. On average, the unit consumes 2.8kwh/day.
      Am I looking at a faulty thermostat? Thermistor?
      PCB?
      *SJ-PT599G (398 liters, 2 door refrigerator). This unit's design doesn't have a condenser fan.

      The freezer fan would be controlled by the sensors inside, if they think the freezer is cold enough the fan might not need to come on but check the climate rating as fridge freezers in garages can switch off because the ambient temperature is too cold.

    Josh, I have a situation you might want to think about. I have a Amana side by side refrigerator. After about 5 years of use, I cam home to find the freezer thawing and the frig side warming. I pulled cover off the evaporator coils and finished clearing the ice, I found something with this defrosting system that baffled me. IT was about the size of a golf ball with 4 or 5 wires into it. Not knowing what this device was and not knowing how to diagnose it, I just cut all the wires and when I turned the frig back on it began cooling. It has been over 6 years now and the freezer cools around zero and the frig side stays around fifty degrees. The element no longer working on the evap. coil and around the doors, this frig remains frost free. Comment appreciated.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      +Alvis Jenkins Manufacturers do not normally pay for an extra part that is not needed. Without a model we cannot identify the part but generally with frost free appliances there is Thermistors or cut outs near the heater/evaporator to identify when the ice has cleared during the defrost.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      Your model number is only recognised as a Hotpoint fridge freezer. If this is the model we are talking about it has a 'wet wall' on the back of the fridge that will have a little frost on it. To control the temperature the freezer is monitored and if warm turns the compressor on. About 20 to 30 percent of the freezer cooling goes to the fridge and this is usually enough if in a normal 'warm kitchen'. If the fridge is in a cooler area or if 'overfilled' this can cause the lowest point of the fridge to get to cold and freeze. There may be nothing that can be done other than loading to change this.

      Simon Huntingford Check the temperature inside as if the machine is continually freezing it should be well below -22. If this is the case then try replacing the sensor Stock Number: ES579571. If this does not resolve the problem it is likely to be a faulty main board which is no longer available.

    Hi I have a Hotpoint frost free and the door was accidentally left open on the freezer compartment over night and now there is a noise like the fan is hitting something and temperature below what it should be so I have removed and drained the back panel which was full of solid ice inside, the noise has now gone but the temperature is still low and Not blowing much air through the vents. Is there anything this could have blown by it over freezing? Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

      Hi Dawn, it is possible the compressor has been damaged due to having to cope with all the warm air going into the freezer section, it also may not be able to clear the ice behind the freezer panel so you will need to defrost it before doing anything else.

    Hi there, I have a samsung cool n cool American fridge freezer and the freezer side isn’t working. I had a guy come out to fix it today and he thought that the dust on the grill at the bottom on the back was causing it to overheat. He removed dust and it worked to the point of -4 but then 6 hours later it’s back to +11. He’s on holiday now now. Hi Joe, there was a problem on some Quadrio appliances as power cables passed through the top hinge of the door . These cables could short out due to wear from opening the door so disconnect and inspect these cable and check the plug fuse. If the plug fuse is OK and there is no lights or display it is likely the control board has failed.

Usually @ 4am or so. drives me insane, ha, Fridge is still very cold but I'm figuring it maybe too cold after watching your vid and it may not be melting the ice build up. Any help/advice much appreciated as I live in a remote area which makes it hard to get looked at. Cheers, regards Steve

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      COOMA Thanks for your comments, The alarm beeping is likely to be occurring when the machine is doing its defrost cycle and the inside temperature is rising to defrost the ice on the evaporator. So thinking about your problem we can say that the temperature sensor is reading correctly?. The defrost is likely to be occurring?,and the defrost heater is likely to be working?. I would empty the appliance and defrost completely for two days with the door open to ensure no ice is built up near the evaporator and retry you may find this alone cures the problem.

    At (1:06) you say that: "this fan draws air into the appliance.."
    My undersanding was that all fridge-freezers were sealed from the atmosphere, or air, outside the unit.
    What you are saying here is the complete opposite.
    Please, can you confirm that the fan is drawing in air from outside the fridge, and if so, where does all the water go? (Assuming that most kitchens are quite humid)

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  6 років тому +2

      Thanks for your comments, You are quite right the cavity is sealed from the outside (apart from the drain hole). What Josh meant to say was 'the fan draws air through the evaporator and circulates it around the cavity'.
      Josh like all our presenters had no formal engineering training, he was trying to pass the information fed to him by our engineers in his own words. We hope this clarifies this point. The water that is drained passes onto a shallow tray above the compressor. Here the warmth from the compressor helps evaporate the small amount of water away.

    I have a hotpoint fridge freezer. I have frost that builds up on the walls of the lower half of my freezer. Anything on the top thaws out and it won't get cold enough to make ice..... Is this an easy fix?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  7 років тому +1

      Hi Danell, some Hotpoint models duct cold air from the freezer to cool the fridge. This ducting can be blocked by ice and as we explain in this video the freezer will also have a defrost circuit that may have failed. You may be lucky and by fully defrosting with the door open for 48 hours all the ice behind the panel will clear and may not come back for a long time if the defrost circuit is OK. However once defrosted it would be worth checking the defrost heater to confirm it has not failed before reusing as this would cause the ice to build up in just a few weeks.

      Hi Hossain, If you hear a click when first switched on then another after ten seconds and this repeats every minute it is likely a compressor fault. If you leave it on for a while and find the compressor getting hot it will confirm this is the problem.
      If this is the problem unfortunately you will need a refrigeration systems engineer to replace the compressor as this system will need purging and re-gassing after fitting.

      Generally 'no frost' appliances have the freezer evaporator (cooling radiator) behind a panel the fridge evaporator in the 'wet wall' on the fridge. This will build up a light frosting that should clear regularly during defrost but will then return. This is normal.

    Repair clinic cont test says 0-50 Ohms of resistance the component (heater) has continuity. You are saying readings outside 200-300?? Please clarify?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      +Nick Emens The resistance depends on the wattage of the element and its voltage that it is used on. Their videos are for the US and Canada markets using 120 volts so the resistance may be lower if used on a 110 volt supply. The rest of the world generally use 220 to 240 volts and the resistances are therefore higher. In either case a faulty element would have a much larger resistance or show open circuit.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      +snooksnufc Thanks for your comments, with two elements in series it will give 92 ohms resistance across your supply.

    • @AnahiltMG
      @AnahiltMG 8 років тому

      Yes eSpares, the resistance of a component does depend on the current and the voltage. However, for 110V electrical appliances the current will be different making the resistance (or the conductance) the same. It is called Ohms Law. In other words the resistance of a component in a US and Canada appliance will be roughly similar to that in appliance in the rest of the world. Nick Emens is right to question your 'facts'... 0-50 Ohms is right.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      Most frost free fridge heaters use a defrost heater (or heaters) with a total power between 100 and 150 watts. watts are calculated from voltage (110 volts) times current so for 150 watts you require a current of 1.36 amps.This would require a total resistance of 80.6 ohms.
      In areas outside the Americas the supply voltage is usually 240 volts so the same 150 watt heater would require 0.625 amps current.
      Therefore the heater would measure 384 ohms.
      The original question was followed up by the viewer when he explained there were two heaters in series giving a combined resistance of 92 ohms and therefore a total wattage of 131.5 on 110 volts.
      I hope this clarifies the readings.

    • @AnahiltMG
      @AnahiltMG 8 років тому

      More than one person said the resistance of their heater is around 50 Ohms. Even doubling it for 2 heaters in series is still less than 100 Ohms. Nick Emens is taking about the UK with 240 volts. I do not know why you are persisting with the 110v example. Anyway according to your calculations in the UK the 2 heaters in series would be 2 * 384 = 768 Ohms. You have applied a wrong interpretation of some facts that you have at hand - please rethink the 'information' you are providing.

    Nice clear overview. I have an RS21 but the fridge temperature is being reported lower on the display panel than it actually is. I have set it to 1 degree Celcius but thermometers are showing around 5 -6 degrees. I have had the modified evaporator cover with cooling fan mod (metal heat transfer clip) years ago. I replaced the yellow/black temp sensor and found some ice around the evaporator area as well as over the temp sensor (fan was clear). Is there meant to be some small amount of ice and given the heat pipe area (between the two side by side doors) can get quite hot when the compressor is running, would the PCB assy be the problem? Heater next to evaporator measured around 285 ohms iirc and fuse was short circuit so all looks fine there.

      eSpares Thanks for the reply and link. Model is RS21-DPSM. I was looking today and find both the freezer and fridge aren't getting low enough temperatures with freezer showing about -16 lowest but currently -13 degrees (set panel to -19) and fridge 5 to 6 degrees (panel set to 1 degree). The fridge is colder higher up also. The only thing I can say has changed recently is replacing the fridge defrost thermistor and did notice a little ice around the heater/evaporator behind the cover but not lots.Tried altering the reference value (1) for fridge to offset temp by 3 degrees to no avail. Will have to remove evap cover and check for ice and seal again. Noticed recently the cold water wasn't very cold too.
      I see there is a white-covered thermistor in the mod pack whereas the one I have (and replaced too) in the fridge is/was a black on and was fixed in its black clip/cover to the copper evaporator pipework. Is the white thermistor the latest one and what are the other parts? What is the defrost cycle usually and the reset codes? Starting to think there isn't enough gas if both fridge and freezer aren't cooled. Will take off evap cover assy again to check seals but thinking of changing the PCB DA41-00388J which I checked. Would the suffix make any difference as I have seen DA41-00388A for sale? Thanks again!

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      fallofdutee The white sensor was a modified type and moves to the input pipe above the evaporator as shown on the info on the kit I mentioned. the board suffix I think refers to the latest productions/modifications but confirm the PCB has all the relevant sockets for your plugs. If there is low gas the evaporators will stop frosting at 2/3 or 1/3 its length progressively.
      For details of the defrost cycle you would need to discuss with Samsung Technical (good luck as they may not talk to non account holders). :-)

      eSpares The thermistor placement was/is on the top left of copper I/P pipe. Read sites such as ukanfixit who iirc say the black is new and white old - but the old black one shows no signs of water ingress which I believe is the difference. Checked freezer today and is at neg 22C but fridge 0.3C @ top and 4 C @ bottom. Wonder if dropping fridge temp by 3C has dropped freezer also. Samsung are great to deal with aren't they.. not! ;-)

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому

      fallofdutee The kit I recommended was the last modification I came across and comes with the white sensor and from memory the old sensors in the machine were black but I cant be sure.The freezer will always take priority as its needs will control the rest of the appliance but this should still allow reasonable regulation in he fridge.

The fridge and freezer seems to lose efficiency at cooling/freezing and upon removing the internal back panel, the evaporator is clogged up with ice. Ice build up is the most common problem with this type of freezer due to a failure of the defrost heater so check the heater if ice is found under the cover.

Repeat this on each clip until the cover can be removed.

    Hi, I came across your vid, very informative :) I wonder if you could help? We have a hotpoint FF175M (think its the FF175MG? its graphite colour) the compressor fires up but sometimes its on for a few seconds, sometime for a while, it then cuts out with 3 loud clicks, also sometimes the light doesnt come on in the fridge, I then turn off at the wall and back on again after a minute and it works until the same symptom with the compressor? we came home and everything had defrosted at one time, Im wondering if its the motherboard PCB? or possibly the relay on the compressor?? its been running for over 5 years and just out of warranty, we are going to empty it and let it defrost for 48hrs and see what happens then, cheers Rob

      Hi Robert, the click is usually the TOC on the compressor going out due to excess heat, check the TOC first and if that's OK it may be the compressor.

      Hi James, it sounds as if something is going down to earth which is causing your electrics to trip, the easiest way to test this is with a meggar which can test for any insulation breakdown within your fridge freezer but don't rule out the trip was damaged during the power failure which will need a electrician to test.

    Mine fridge is making huge crack noises
    what can i do about this?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  9 років тому +1

      Hi PlaystationQUAD, the reason for these cracking noises is likely to be due to expansion and contraction of components and the lining inside the appliance due to the extreme cold and then warming in the back when it runs a defrost cycle.
      This can be quite normal as during defrost a heater has to melt any ice that has built up under the cover so there can be a significant temperature change.
      This can be made worse by excess ice that may be holding the expansion and then releasing in the same way as an earthquake is caused by sudden ground movement.
      This may be helped by ensuring the appliance is level and also defrosting by switching off and allowing to dry with the door open for a few days (if you are going on holiday for example).

      You have described what happens when a thermostat fails, often the thermostat will stick like this and a sharp tap on the knob when it is warming brings the unit back on. Replacing the thermostat as shown in the following video is likely to solve the problem:

    My Beko frost free fridge freezer model CS5713APS has following problem: I noticed it not cooling down enough as temperatures were close to 20° fridge and around 0 freezer and compressor was still running. I left it of for 3 days. After turned on again it cools down fridge to around 10° and freezer -10 but doesn't switch off itself but slowly starts to increasing temperature again back and I can see water drops at the back of fridge. Compressor still running but temperatures are increasing. If turned off for 10 minutes and then back on, compressor doesn't start but I hear clicking sound like every 2min. from compressor area. If I leave it again for a day it starts working normally but process is same again... Any guess what is faulty please?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  4 роки тому

      Hi Stefan, from the faults it would suggest the compressor is not pumping correctly causing the temperature rise and getting that hot it is taking out the TOC, the only way to verify this is for a refrigeration technician to attach a line tap onto the compressor and check it but sorry it's not good news as the compressor can be very expensive to replace.

    • @eSpares

      Generally no, the only time it may effect the operation is some fridge freezers can leave the light on dim to add a little warmth in the fridge to ensure the compressor runs regularly in a cold environment. If the appliance is in a normal kitchen this would not be a problem.

    Are frozen water droplets at the back of a fridge normal with a frost free fridge freezer?

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому +1

      Most fridges use a 'wet wall' where the cooling is done behind the liner at the back. This will accumulate frost and frozen water droplets. The fridge will then periodically defrost allowing the frost to melt and the water to drain from a gutter under the wet wall to the back and evaporate away.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому +1

      If fridge or freezers are laid on their side or back it is possible for oil in the bottom of the compressor to blow along the gas tubes and block where it enters the evaporator. If this occurs it cannot be repaired without specialist equipment. Allowing to stand for a few hours before switching on can stop this ocurring.

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому +1

      Without removing the ice you risk causing significant damage if you try to force the cover off. If you have a steam cleaner you may be able to melt the ice quickly and remove the cover. Your model had several modifications to prevent this problem re-occuring. It may be worth calling the manufacturer to see if they will carry out these modifications for you.

      Thank you......I have now managed to empty the top two drawers of the freezer (thrown away a lot of stuff) the bottom two drawers still feel frozen, I will gradually empty freezer and as you suggest on your video, leave the freezer off for 24/ 48 hours to defrost naturally. Hopefully that will cure the fault.thanks again for getting back to me............Brenda

    • @eSpares
      @eSpares  8 років тому

      If your machine does require a modification it is likely it will work for several months after fully defrosting but the ice may come back. For this reason I would still advise you contact the Manufacturers to discuss any modification required. If you choose not to do this I would check the defrost heater has not failed once the appliance is defrosted.
