- #CDHKInDepth: Hong Kong has maintained the world's least affordable #housing market for 11 straight years. Hundreds of thousands of residents in the city still live in tiny subdivided units. With a tight deadline set by 2049, how can Hong Kong address its housing crisis?

I honestly feel so lucky being able to live in a 1000 sf flat in hk. And it’s just me and my parents. This video reminded me to stay grateful for everything.
Yes you're lucky until we have common prosperity. Some of our comrades can stay in your home.
Same, I was fortunate to have never lived in tiny flats of high rise apartments in HK since a kid. Prefer villas than apartment blocks.
Yes, I am grateful for my 900 sq ft apartment for my hubby and I. GRATEFUL, it was purchased in 1997.
@@sct4040 grateful for British colony. Prices suck thanks to Handover.
Our nepal is best in living i only pay one flat 60 usd per month, and if you have good job than here you can buy everything in cheapest price
Trying to figure out how they survived lock-down during Covid. There just isn't anywhere to go. It had to feel depressing.
Hopefully, they could ar least escape to Open court yard or Rooftop.
One lady going around doing that work.. should be army of social workers in there . Bless her heart
Its insane to imagine people live like this. Especially because I'm Canadian. Living in the rural countryside your lucky if you even see your neighbors.
I’d love to move somewhere like that where I can rescue animals and they roam free.
Now we know why no one wants to have kids there anymore. One person can barely live in those spaces.
That's the plan,
This is really good news. I hope they can deal with this sooner ... No human should live in such condition.. A one room flat here is absolutely livable even though it is not big but I'm grateful.
Whenever i travel to HK before, i uaed to envy the people in there whenever i see the high rise buildings that looks like big condo units. But when i watched documentaries like this about HK people livinf in cage homes, i felt myself very lucky to be living in a 150 sqm single detached house that we own... i realized that not all people living in a 1st world countries are living well..
The HK govt could learn a lot from Singapore
Great documentary, Ms. Sze is an angel, there must be so much burnout with her job. Hong Kong needs to do something about ageism these people need to work and there is no reason that they should not be hired.
Second, the delays are benefiting the people who do not want more affordable housing. The slumlords who make all this money are the ones who do not want affordable housing, they should be sent to prison.
Putting them in prison won't help the people living in the building. I was thinking that too, it seems unconscionable to charge so much. I was thinking the government should build taller buildings for the transitional housing. 4 stories is kind of a waste of space when it could be 10 or 15 and help more people
Safe and clean housing is a human right
Yes, but not in the center of a major city. There are cheaper alternatives further out.
@Happycat Yes I have been there many times
Don't ever forget, this was a legacy left by the British.
It’s been 30 years already. Pointing fingers are old.
@@michellengo3352 guess those are not new either.
The British never left, look into its political and judiciary system, policy changes almost impossible. HK were made Tax Haven to launder for British, same as how Macau was built for by the Portuguese, the locals just dont understand, pathetic.
Britain have their own country to F-up
Hong Kong doesn't have a land shortage, it's just very poor land management. Over half of the available empty land is owed by the government or has been listed as a nature preserve. Which meant investors are stuck with a very limited amount of available development sites. So Investors have to pay ridiculous amounts of money to buy land, which meant if they wanted to quickly make profit and cover the loss from purchasing the land, they would need to raise the rent or price of individual flats to extreme prices.
Hong Kong is doing a good thing by getting rid of cage homes, as they're unsafe and unsanitary. But similar to the situation in South Korea with it's basement homes, the government should be able to provide even more public housing for the people.
hong kong has no shortage of land the government keeps land prices high thru artificial scarcity
You have watched the wrong videos. HK's housing legacy shares much with the UK, the US, and even Japan. All with excessive land price despite plentiful land. Construction along hillsides around HK leads to threaded development leading to excessive congestion and unable to get to work etc. Infrastructures like tunnels & bridges over come the problems of geography. Which is why expensive land reclamation is a seriously viable solution.
Hong kong city is the size of a peanut. No way in hell can most citizens own land yet be full of businesses,a room yes.
It takes time to reverse 156 years of White Supremacist rule where Chinese people were treated as second class citizens. Then the Brits left behind a strong fifth column to continue the dirty work of the Anglo-American Empire. Things will improve it due time now that Hong Kong people finally have have a National Security Law to protect against foreign funded terrorists and quislings.
What about all of those "ghost cities"? No one is living in those massive cities.
@@annemariesmith5459 those are in Mainland China not in HK
I'm a claustrophobic person so every time I see those coffin houses imagining myself living there where a person can't even stretch his own legs, I feel chest tightness , breath shortness and heart palpitations.
Thank you Carrie Lam
It’s so sad and gross that one of the women mentioned that the toilet is literally next to the kitchen. I really hope something can be done to at least give these residents more hygienic places to live. Recently there are news reports in the US that pods are created for ppl to rent short term. Kinda like a coffin. Costing $800 a month. Sharing kitchen and bathroom with others in the same house.
I have 520 Sq ft, that I live in with my cat.
My heart breaks for those dear family's!
more than half of HK's land is undeveloped and is owned by the government, why don't they set aside some of it for those people?
We are very lucky to live in philippines because we have our own house and lot...
Isn't half of the island underwater?
Follow Singapore housing system.
I’m so grateful my father moved us to the US. As prideful as they are to be from
Hong Kong I think this city also has a lot of exploitation. My mother worked as a child and didn’t really go to school until she was a bit more grown. She had only elementary education and became a seamstress. If you are poor and can’t afford education there is no real ability to strive for a better life. Because I was born in the US I have two degrees. My siblings all have college degrees and jobs and stability now. I’m so grateful I’m not born and raised in Hong Kong
God forbid a fire starts in one of those apartments.
the problem is too much population for such a small island. If poor people who can't afford kids don't have kids then it's gonna be much better for the kids
Now i am being grateful and lucky living in Malaysia 🇲🇾 . Hope the government there being a fair like make more space, or give subsidies to help their citizen in need to applied home like Malaysia government does.
I wish I had a cage home. I live in a homeless shelter right now
it's a Govt backed problem, if they wanted to open up more land for housing they could, but won't, to keep the high cost of housing current in HK.
So sad to see people live in a such condition. Hope the government can solve this problem as promised.
Land scarce and yet so many low rise apartments in city centre. Crazy politicians are screwup. Singapore implemented a law for compulsory land acquisition for public use and valuation is based on market pricing. The law enables quick transformation to suit public interest.
Honestly the conditions of Hongkong's tiny houses are much worse than prisons in Finland
its even worse than prisons in hk. some people commit crime in order to have more living space
Greedy politicians not doing their job. Providing affordable housing is the job of the government.
Heck we need this in Canadian cities.
Caged housing exist since the british rule who did nothing to reform and regulate it. Using their lauded laissez faire market policy as excuse instead of establishing standard and addressing housing shortage to ensure basic quality of homes. Consequently, it nurture local developers to compete and drive housing industry based entirely on market speculation and max profit play. Yet, in reality they do not create real economic value. More importantly, a lesson for all developing countries' leaders to realise the vicious cycle of open market driven growth imperative impose by global institution only undermine local economic development. Many greedy developers and elitist regimes have developed strategic collusion mindset to exploit and drive speculative housing market growth underthe excuse of market forces which lead to mounting debt, liability and degradation.
One thing I notice in the video/news reports/interviews about the living situation in HK is each resident/individual/family has lots of clutter. Yes the living conditions/space is limited, yet have multiple of the same kitchen item doesn’t. I believe the depression within is causing this clutter in their space
How will the get out of the cage homes if they don't have something as cheap for the population who is so poor and suffering. By the deadline everyone will be priced out by that time anyway so horrible
Free Hong Kong, Free Tibet, Free Xinjiang, No more covid lock downs!
In Toronto, Canada the waiting list to get public housing if you are eligible is 16 yrs.
Same with Aus. In my area alone, the public housing list is over 100,000 families long. They won't even accept new names on the list, because you'll be dead before you get a home 😂
🙏🙏🙏
Being in the US, homelessness is a terrible thing. Yes, these cage homes are pretty bad. HOWEVER - they have their own guaranteed bed and shelter every night.
I think “pods” could be a real blessing to our homeless sleeping in atm vestibules. Air flow, natural light, and cleanliness are concerns.
We need this in Toronto and Vancouver
The modular housing design would be great for those two cities. Both have a large segment of homeless & this could also help a family stuck in a shelter or in their car get to a safe & affordable place to live. Both cities are criminally expensive.
Why?
I hope they have found resolution to the housing problem. It’s ridiculous that regular people can’t afford houses or on a waiting list for that long. I honestly would consider moving to another country if possible
Parabéns pelo canal "verdadeiro". Podia ter China Daily em português, que acham da ideia??? Muito obrigado!!! Parabéns!!!
Maybe its a stupid question but, why wouldnt those people move to another city and seek better living conditions? They dont have a house nor own a business, theres nothing that keeps them attatched to hong kong, unless they cant speak mandarin well.
More than 200.000 people living in deplorable conditions waiting for public housing, and those two ongoing projects plus the already finished one will only be able to house around 400 people?
Why doesnt the goverment intervene in the rental price of those cage homes?
In HK, the situation is different from the US (see my other post above). In order to land the good jobs in China, you probably need to have 'good social connection'. The big Chinese cities could have the same high cost of living as Hong Kong. People could face a big pay cut, if they move to the smaller cheaper Chinese cities. Housing price is expensive in most part of China. In addition, many in HK could only speak Cantonese fluently.
"By 2049 no more cage homes" like going to Lexington Philadelphia and tell the Tranq users "from tomorrow no more drugs". Just as effective.
Living in the US is extremely expensive. The homeless crisis is getting worse by the year.
I was born in HK and grew up in Macau. I moved to the US forty years ago. I first landed in San Francisco, California. Over the years, I have lived in SF, upstate NY, Dallas, Chicago and Indianapolis. I finally settled in Chicago. For over a year, I had a temporary job relocation to Indianapolis. In the US, there are still a lot of places with afforable housing. Many parts of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio and other states are still very afforable. I cannot understand why some Californian residents rather live in their cars or cramped homes, than moving to another state for a better life.
It is expensive in some places but not all. In the US at least you have the opportunity to move somewhere else and not near a big city. In Hong Kong they are very limited to what they can do so I don’t think the situation compares
They need to give tenant's house choice vouchers, so that funds can be applied to rent where they can find suitable housing instead of mouseholes.
Those cage homes are worse than jail
Connect the rural areas and develop affordable housing there. Don’t just sell the land to the unscrupulous developers.
Is this problem due to over population? The living condition us sad. I have only changed plane in HK airport. People at the airport seems rude and unfriendly.
1.4m hkd? That can’t even buy a parking space in HK
A wise country woman told me that so many people are in the city because they like it.
The hills aren't occupied , so they could build houses there
I wish they would de clutter and minimize stuff. It’s a big space, not sure of ceiling height.
No fire safety whatsoever!
I've been to Hongkong but I never knew this part of the story 🙁
This should be against the law this is inhumane.
Geeeez! I feel sorry for these people. China's a HUGE country. They can't build studios further away from the inner city and just add more train capacity to commute into the cities for work?
Hong Kong must never bid farewell to these homes they are good thing people need them as a place to live.
SOME OF THESE CAGE HOUSE 🤔 CAN BE TORE DOWN AN BE USE TO RE BUILD HOUSES
People deserve better living conditions than that!!
I think move to country side will be better
These social workers are heroes!
Need a better system than capitalism, hk has been following the wrong path where small number of people owning more private land and wealth... put a cap to capitalism...
In my opinion, it is an overpopulation problem in HK. Meanwhile China has thousands of ghost cities. Not sure why Beijing and HK haven't tried to move some of the people who would want to leave to the ghost cities.
Hong kong actually has a lot more land they just don't allow housing on. Just 7% of its land is residential. I think maybe Hong Kong is wealthier so people want to stay there
Why would people leave their hometown if they love it. Its just hard for anybody to leave their extended family, relatives and just move somewhere else
those ghost cities are ghost cities for a reason- people go where there is money
@@hotspringroll yeah exactly. I might be wrong but in China people put a higher percentage of their investments in real estate because they trust the People's bank or investment funds less, or real estate has higher returns. Also the local governments get tax revenue from land leases. Idk how Houko, the household registration system works for those cities, maybe it's easier to get for ghost cities? So a relatively high percentage ghost cities are vacant apartments, and there are less businesses and jobs but it's still economically sustainable bc people buy the apartments
Theres no work there and it was too expensive to transport food supplies and other goods and products out to these areas, it was a huge error on the part of the Chinese government, they were ment to be show places to attract wealthy people,
but no one was interested, there is no nice scenery no tourism, rich people can find much more scenic places to live.
if they are rich enough they can more easily move abroad and live in much less expensive places. with more easily availability of goods and services.
The huge cost and impracticality of bringing goods and out to these places so far from the coastal regions made it too expensive and unattractive to live there.
the transportation over such a distance made it undoable, the Chinese communist government is also very corrupt their entire infrastructure is inferior quality, the ghost cities are crumbling anyways. and still people need to work, with no tourism or job creation or services those people would be always on Government assistance.
They also might not always have consistent access to amenities like a hospital or dental or school for children, all these things would be a problem as so few people want to live so far from the city centres. for obvious reasons how many doctors would want to move so far into isolated places? they would have to have financial incentives.
teachers office workers, and all manner of industrial workers everything from plumbers to repair people, builders, police, sanitation workers, restaurant workers, stores, technicians etc.
you name it all those services we take for granted would not be consistently or ever available. so with the way the chinese communist government and system operates at this time, it is not a good idea or alternative for those poor souls though I did think about that the idea is a good idea. ☺
Living like this is inhumane!
衣食住行,住是基本生活的须有
It’s just inhumane to do this long term. Please change this soon. People will have died in these cages
The world is overpopulated they have to do something about it
If the person throw sm of her things, may be look bigger
How much capitalism in hongkong?
Just like dubai
hong kong ith an expenthive thity
sad
Blame the British
They really complaining about the population decline.
How dreadful.
I just could not figure out the world is so big and yet people want to be cramped in little cages in HK their whole lives. Why?
I don't think they want to be there, they have no choice.
一句講晒 < 悲 哀 > ! 頂 硬 上 拉 !
Every American who is a renter should be required to watch this. They might think twice about complaining and withholding rent.
Legacy of colonial government
This is so, so sad. I long the Cantonese people, and it’s terrible to see people living like being in a jail cell.
I need to stop complaining about my 1200 sq ft FLOOD home even though it’s falling apart. If anyone wants to help link in the comments
Were are you going to put all these people that live in here now if you tore down the cage apartment and built new apartment?
They will have to be homeless tell the apartments are built.
I'm not for having apartment like this but they are here now.
I don't think they're going to tear down the apartments until the residents have housing somewhere else...but I guess that's not guaranteed and that's a good point
Instead of protesting "free honkong" they should embrace China and let the country build them proper houses so they don't live like rats
And down the road they build super citys with no one lving in them
just dont live there
Why does the Chinese government not move some of this mass of useless humanity some place else. .????
住香港真系好陰弓仲慘過死
Pathetic treatment of ppl.. save 21 years to but a home?!!! Jesus
Been there many times and to be honest, HK isn't suitable for humans to live
Subdivided units should be banned.
nawh; America right now is more expensive lol even renting an apartment
They got sooooooo much land to make more buildings/homes, like everywhere else around the world it’s all about the governments greed for money
