Nguyen Van Son and Eppie Yip were among the 17 homeless people who lived on a footbridge in Sham Shui Po, Hong Kong’s poorest district. After packing up their shelters in mid-July, some of them have moved to a nearby park. But the homeless problem still persists in the neighbourhood.
Hong Kong property is the most expensive in the world. The monthly rent for low quality subdivided flats even smaller than a car park space can cost more than HK$4,000 or US$509, while public housing has a five and a half year long waiting list. Soaring rents, and inadequate public housing force the city’s poorest inhabitants to sleep rough.

A homeless person can easily earn anywhere between $100 and $500 per day tax free. As you can see a homeless person is quite well off compared to a homeless person in Hong Kong. I don’t mean to minimize their plight, but they’re less at risk for being caught in a high density housing fire, or suffering from harmful air quality/lack of ventilation. In all fairness they didn't really focus on the drug addict and alcoholic homeless... They just focused on those that had some problems in life and just don't have the money to get back on track...those sorts also exist in Europe etc.
Adversely, given that HK has v expensive housing, and many places in Europe doesn't, you're also likely to see more "well groomed" homeless in HK because they just can't afford to rent somewhere but are normal people. Whereas in Europe, those on the streets normally have serious issues going on with drug addiction, alcoholism or mental issues.

If you were financially educated, you would know the US dollar is losing its reserve status to the China RMB with the BRICS economic powers rising, causing resource-poor developed countries economies to collapse!
Also, Hong Kong is the Administration Region of China, it's a socialist city, food, medical care is always available for the locals, the Hong Kong Government takes care of the poor, the only problem the locals have is the UK hoarding Tories investments still in Hong Kong's real estate market making housing unaffordable which will change with China's iron fist in the western hedge fund money laundering hub Hong Kong!

I think the tough part about being them is more about living life aimlessly
It's not tough to find a spot to sleep, find some food to eat, or even afford some small luxuries like ice cream; physical survival is not the issue here
The mental anguish though, is a totally different story; imagine waking up everyday and not knowing what are you living for, not knowing why exactly do you even need to wake up
For most people, however small their goal is, there are at least things to accomplish everyday - wake up, go to work on time, do your job, earn your pay, so that you can pay your bills and afford all your stuffs; but for these people, it's just nothing
I can't even jmagine how depressing that must be

You make a really good point here. It is indescribably torturous to drift from day to day without a direction, without a goal. But I don't suppose that it is truly like this for all of them. Nguyen's words don't strike me as of one who is insecure and aimless, but of one who is truly content and has found peace and a reason for living with what little he has. Yip, on the other hand, seems to be more similar to what you have described. The comparison I'd make is towards those who have decent or high-paying jobs, who work and work towards what they believe to be their goals, but cannot imagine or absolutely refuse to consider how they'd live, when they have nothing. If their goals are so fragile that they collapse under certain circumstances, I don't believe that they'd be very fulfilling goals to begin with.
In contrast, the goals that drive these people under poverty to live are far greater than what many of those living in security can imagine, as they have withstood whatever trials they were faced with. It really makes us think, about what could be the admirable goals that drive these people forward, and what lessons we can learn just from observing their way of life, so that we ourselves may find the same fulfillment and satisfaction that they have.

You underestimate the power of laziness. Some people will exert more effort to avoid working than to just do the work. They could easily get a job at a fast food place and give themselves structure and get an apartment to share with a roommate, but they don't want to. The problem with freedom is that it gives people the freedom to make bad and unhealthy life choices. If you believe in freedom, you have to give people the freedom to be useless pieces of crap, but the best thing you can do for them is to not enable them so don't give them food or money so that they are forced out of their laziness comfort zone to be a street sweeper or janitor or something at least to contribute to society.

I think the real point is being missed here. The HK government is in the business of selling and speculating in land. That accounts for most of the government's (and the few property developer's) revenue. Even people who aren't on the streets are struggling to make ends meat, let alone buy a home. Meanwhile, the government consistently has budget surpluses of over $80billion usd every year, economists are calling it a structural surplus problem. It'd be quite trivial for the govt. to provide housing for all, once and for all, but they'll never do that, because it's in their interest to keep property prices as high as possible. How is it property prices are the highest in the world by far, but incomes are ridiculously low. Of course, they'd blame the lack of land in HK, but that is bollocks, as they could build bridges across the sea, smash mountain tops to fill in the oceans, with expedient efficiency for 'development' but solving social and environmental problems, never. Hell, there isn't even a grass pitch for kids to run around in the whole of HK. Oh and the higher ranks of officials in HK government have the biggest pay packets in the world. It's a blatant scam all round, but the idiotic sheep mentality of the people ensures the scam will continue to be more ridiculous with every passing day.

Good you brought this up... Unfortunately no one in Hong Kong wants a sales tax or to increase income tax ... so the government is reliant on land sales to fund what services it provides (which is relatively minimal for a city-state of it's wealth).

Lamma Bing, You are so knowledgeable. I admired your observation ! The 1997 agreement still made the British having the income from the limited land sale to support the economy in England. Solving the housing problem means the price of real estate would drop, the artificial beating up the cost of housing once no longer there, it means the income from Hong Kong is going down. Do you think England would allow this to happen ? Less money from Hong Kong for England ? Never, not until 2047 ! George Wu, ARCHITECT. A.I.A., NCARB 2018-9-16

I am only an architect, This is politics. It is beyond me ! My idea of using the shipping container to build low cost affordable housing is a very naïve one ! Just like years ago I designed (4) sky-bridges connecting (4) towers was a very naïve idea, after I found out that WTC7 collapse straight down like an controlled demolition ! Then , if 9/11 was an inside job, even there were (5 ) sky-bridges, still would not save any one ! George Wu, ARCHITECT, A,I,A,, NCARB 2018-9-16
