One tip for you, not sure if it is a standard thing to do, but I always like to vacuum out any holes in exterior walls after drilling, and squirt in a bit of silicone before the plug goes in. Just ensures that if you get driving rain onto that wall, it doesn't run down to your holes, track through the gaps and give you a damp issue in the future! 👍
A tip for you. Invest in a pica pen (available in a number of different types) or Marxman chalk spray "paint" marker. They're perfect for marking holes without the need for a template.
