Do not be afraid to walk out of a store empty handed. Just means that you did not find that item which wowed you. Not all items are meant for everyone. Save your money for the next time.
In 2022 I decided to really get serious about taking care of myself - skin, clothing, etc. So, I did some research and figured out what style I was, what colour season, etc. I then went to my wardrobe and got rid of everything that I hated wearing, found uncomfortable, or was waiting to fit into. I then wrote down everything I had left. I filled in that list with essentials that were missing and items that would help me get my style (sort of a cross between kibbe and a capsule wardrobe). I then went out and bought skin care, makeup (who knew these things changed when you turned 50 lol) and the missing items on my list. Living intentionally has decreased my need to shop and increased my satisfaction with my lifestyle. I never think "I have nothing to wear" and I always feel good about how I present myself to the bigger world. Frankly, I feel pretty great!! Thank you for all the advice and thank you for your videos over the past year. They were a great help. I hope you had a joyous Christmas and will have a wonderful New Year!!!
Very thought-provoking video! I would add: read your environment. I used to have a bohemian wardrobe: mixed prints, strong colors, lots of volume, and I lived in heels. I felt like a creative butterfly, lol! Then I moved to where that kind of dressing put me in "clueless crazy lady" category. So, I evolved my style: less volume, less bohemian but a little more nomad, a lot more solids; I toned down the color, I embraced the 1-inch heels. I still look creative, but more in line with my surroundings. What looks good in one city will get you side-eye in another.
Lol 🤣🤣 at the clueless crazy lady 🤣 But I totally get what you’re saying! The same way that wearing things you look great in in a big city feel off in a small town ❤️
Great addition to what was mentioned in the video and smart advice. When environment changes, everything changes too. Weather, culture, surroundings, people, pace of life… I used to live in huge cities and small cities in different countries, and the way people dressed always was different.
In Real Estate sales, they say you should dress like you would make the perfect neighbor. You can still have individually- but it makes for a benchmark.
Love this! One thing you touched on that is SUPER important. The best quality A PERSON CAN AFFORD is key. I have found that even midrange priced items work for me when I take good care of them. If I spend what I consider “too much” for an item, I’ll hang it in my closet and save it. (For what, I don’t know.) It NEVER gets the wear I paid for!
"You are the star and your clothes are the backup dancer" - Excellent way to put it! When I'm trying on new clothes (I have the new habit of always photographing myself in them before cutting tags) one of the things I'm looking at is: Do I notice ME or do I notice the Clothes? I would add that knowing your body type is immensely helpful in trying to figure out what will look good on you/flatter you.
1. Learn what labels are quality 2. Thoughtfully shop thrift stores / consignment for those labels. 3. Keep a list of what you have or a photo grouping, and make a list of what you are missing.❤
Yes 1/3 of my closets are high quality vintage...blazers, coats, skirts,,blouses...beautiful,,beautiful things that give me great joy. They ate classics that jever go out pf style. I ix them with newer things. I have a faux lamb winter white short jacket I am wearing with many existing things and the combinations look fresh modern and in style but high end because most of the outfit IS high end with just that little Zara jacket to jolt it out of stuffyland.
So true about the friends....learned that the hard way. Learning to love myself, sounds cliché but is THE only lesson we could ever learn that will bring all of this together. Ex, when you love yourself, you move your body, you feed it as healthy as possible and you invest in a few good pieces that bring you joy. Took me 65 years to learn that! Great video, thank you.
not only when you model but also the pictures you pull from the internet of other women are sooo helpful and inspiring! You've really changed the way i dress and see style from watching you all this year. love your channel!
Omggggg THE black sweater!!! I don’t know what it is exactly, because you’re always lovely, but you look so simply, supremely beautiful in that sweater!
I am all about the capsule wardrobe as I have limited space, and I love clothes and dressing in a particular way for how I feel that day. This leads me to spend all day putting on this or that. So...my go to is a capsule that interchanges with the same or similar items. You can get dressed in 5 minutes...😊
Definitely develop a personal style. Look at books, shows, movies for inspiration. Stop chasing every last trend. Try things on. Make sure you can wear the new pieces with other pieces in your wardrobe. Wear things that fit you, your lifestyle and your budget.
Great video!! Happy New Year!! Style lesson’s I’ve learned at 60 years is 1) be comfy 2)dont follow Instagrammers telling you what to wear, 3) dress age appropriate 4) dont buy so much 5) enjoy your life, Happy NewYear🎉and Peace be with you
So much sound advice in this video. It really does take time to reinvent your wardrobe. It is so worth the time and effort to find just the right pieces. Then, when you are dressing for the day, everything is so simple to match up because your purchases have been well thought out.
Happy Holidays! I have a lot of thoughts on this video (love it btw). I think you hit the nail on the head with the fact that we're confused about personal style, fashion, over- consumerism, low quality products, etc. This is really (IMO) where it begins. Human beings are very impressionable, we are so easily swayed by trends & what we erroneously think others expect of us. Once you know your personal style, this is often not the case. Figure out your personal style, your own budget, and what your values are around consumerism and this will get so much easier! 💙
I completely agree! I also think everyone is at a different place with their style journey. Most of us eventually get to the opinion that less is more at some point, which is great! ❤️
@@ANNAREID29 yup! It took me about 2 years to dig deep in finding my personal style and curating a wardrobe I love, it's a work in progress still, but I am just about there..
Thank you Anna for your knowledge, style, and teaching approach. So human and personable! I’ve been going through a transition the past couple of years (widowed at 56, body changes) and naturally style changes as I find my “new normal”. I am enjoying all your videos and your sense of humour is great! 😂❤
Merry Christmas! You are so like me and my evolution in fashion. I have also learned the same lessons. My problem now is that I am semi-retired and have two closets full of beautiful clothes that I wore everyday at the office. My lifestyle has changed and I don’t dress like that any longer, but am having a hard time letting go! Sounds ridiculous, but I spent quite a bit of time and money accumulating quality pieces that are now just taking up space. I keep thinking …..but what if I go back to work one day? Ain’t gonna happen….not in that way….so what the heck is my problem? Ugh! I’ve donated a lot already, but my style has changed as well. I have to retrain my brain and just say goodbye to my former life and buy/keep only what works NOW!
I hear you!! It’s definitely hard to let go of some of those! Maybe just move them to another part of the house not in your main closet, abs come back to them later? You might realized you lived just fine without. And then resale them so you feel like they will be loved by someone else ❤️
Boy have I been there! After I had that conversation with myself I ended up saving what I could and taking the rest to a consignment shop. I found that a good solution.
Hi. I don't know if your going to see this, but please consider donating your work wear to a female prison (they can use your clothes for job interviews & employment opportunities) or ask your local collage about taking donations for their employment classes. There are alot of young women who can't afford quality work wear for job interviews and could really use your clothes. Congratulations on your retirement. :-)
I decided at almost 69 (don't look it, 5'7", 130 lbs) to revamp my wardrobe by buying new things over a few months. I prefer the classic look, but can be funky too (my 20-something sons get embarrassed lol) and I 'just happened' to come across your videos. What a hoot, you're hilarious as well as having great ideas 😎. Can't wear heels though 😶. Blessings from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦🎉
I loveeee this video. Once I started wearing what I made me feel comfortable and what I thought looked good on me, my confidence in social situations and just overall increased. I was dressing for other people and thinking "what will they say if I wore this? or I wonder if _________ would like this....". That mindset caused me to waste alot of money and be super awkward in social situations. I longer care what other people think as it pertains to my clothing. I will NOT leave the house until I AM satisfied with my outfit.
I think developing personal style is critical to putting together a wardrobe that you love. Knowing your particular aesthetic can help you save a lot of money! Just because a particular fabrication/pattern/color looks good on someone else, doesn’t mean it will work for you! I get annoyed by influencers who constantly promote colors like black, when (unless you have the coloring or makeup to balance it) black can totally wash out and age us as we get older. Knowing your color palette can make all the difference!
Anna, I've been watching some makeup videos. They use a eyelid primer. You use your concealer. I've been doing that! Thanks for the idea. I'm currently using wetnwild megalast INCOGNITO all-day full-coverage concealer. My first concealer. And I like it. It was recommended by a makeup artist. I'm just starting to experiment with makeup. One good thing about it. Makeup doesn't take up as much room as clothes do. I'm kinda running out of room.💄
That is true! 🤣 So I tried primer and it didn't do it for me. I had my makeup done a whie back and she used concealer and it just made such a huge difference in my skin. So I think it's whatever works for the individual - but I'd def give the concealer on the eyelids a try! 😃❤️
Merry Christmas Anna! This is a really smart video to post as we enter 2023. I made some major changes to my life this year and I no longer work in corporate america. I do still work but now in a home improvement center. Both good jobs and I really like my current role, however... My wardrobe needs have totally changed and I now have to figure out what I need for work vs. the business casual looks I used to wear. For example, I realize that I need to purchase a good pair of work boots instead of my riding boots or other tall boots. I am now starting to make new lists and reassess my closet. I will need to do a closet clean out this spring too! Thanks!
Your advise is always very thoughtful. I love the way you present ideas and your personality. I would also like to suggest the best way to build a kicking wardrobe is to buy quality basics at the rate you can. Cheap looks cheap. I buy the good trousers and coats first then add good quality fashion items. I never buy from Old Navy, or Zara, they exploit children in underdeveloped countries which I will not support I don't care what they show!
So I’m going outside my comfort zone this year ( maybe). I picked up so hot pink / fuchsia items. I’ve always worn dark colors but I fell in love with these bright colors. Zap! Gonna try it!
Only thing I have a problem with(maybe you can help me process this) is that is harder to get rid of quality items, and I'm afraid I will be even worse off a clothing hoarder than I already am!! Thank you for your fun and windsurfing personality, your tips, and I will try and use your sponsors more in the new year. Happy new year crim a fellow Floridian fashion lover!
Aw I get it!! ❤️ I always try to resale my high quality items if they've run their course (poshmark, the realreal etc) Makes me feel like they are going to someone else who will love them the way they deserve to be loved again 😃❤️
The lesson that spoke to me most was the "you haven't spent enough time trying things together" "I have nothing to wear". The scary area in my closet is the "dressed up for dinner out" and parties and this past season, really tried my patience!! I realized I don't even have any dress trousers that fit me! My daily life is casual outdoors with plenty of jeans, boots, amazing coats and jackets. I even get compliments on how "put together " I look. Then comes the winter evening out wardrobe and Im an insecure mess. Far too many statement tops with nothing to pair with and everything is uncomfortable or has some annoying quirk that constantly needs attention through the night. Statement top/ black bottom is becoming a curse and doesn't work anymore. random cool tops and black anything bottoms that I think might go together, usually don't. My new years resolution is spend some time, clean out my closet, and put together a winter evening out capsule wardrobe so at any given moment i can have great outfits ready to go and not be panicking about it!!
Very Merry Christmas. It takes time to find your best style. A really good full length mirror that shows the complete look including shoes helps. Quality counts! You are very entertaining as always.
Thank you for this very informative video. I missed your funny remarks! But I totally agree with you on everything you mentioned. I loved that you didn’t tell us to throw everything out. C’mon that is NOT where to start. FIRST Make a board or several - to figure out what you like and looks good. Then tackle the closet. Making a list is a great idea. LOVE your videos
Thank you for such great advice. I’m taking my time in buying quality classic clothes, but also thank you for stating that some good quality polyester clothes are still good to have. I love some of my pieces and I will keep them forever.
Great Advice! Especially about taking your time and quality items. I carefully and selectively shop clearance for quality pieces that I love and will use for years to come!
Love your videos Anna. I've been trying to get a clear sense of my own style for past year or so (wish I'd started sooner) but I'm realising that we're never actually done. We keep evolving!
What a great video. You made so many wonderful points and suggestions. I’ve been watching fashion videos for a while now but I really connected with your message in this one. Thanks. Happy Holidays! 🎉
I appreciate your advice! I would also like to advice that rounded jewelry, like the chain you wear, match with rounder lines on the shirt, while v neck would match better with pendants that follow this triangular V-neck line.
Good video! Now I know why I don't wear crew neck tops! I just got this cute sweater yesterday and when I tried it on I thought, 'I don't know if I'll keep this!'now I know why! I do prefer round neck or v neck tops!
You need time to figure out your style - SO true! AND: as now a new era in fashion is really beginning, actually I need to REthink my style within this new environment!
Who sells quality clothing anymore? I’d love some suggestions because all I see around me are fast fashion stores. I’m constantly repurchasing every season because the clothes don’t last. It’s so wasteful. I’d love a video on quality clothing retailers.
I suggest thrifting if you can and look for classic timeless pieces from brands that had quality decades ago and also natural fibers & good construction. I always look for Ann Taylor, Loft, Talbots, WHBM to name a few and Poshmark has been a good app too at times. It’s definitely harder these days because quality of garments is so poor now. Everything is China made or just sweatshops.
Love this Anna, good practical advice without snark. Merry Christmas. I would like to add, that women agonize over sizes. Don't! You may be a size 4 in one brand and a size 8 in another. Try stuff on and no stressin on the size.
I had to buy a whole new summer wardrobe this year due to menopause & our burning hot summer..linen modal & bamboo but the pieces can all be mixed & matched & good quality...if it doesn't fit when i first try it on or I don't feel happy when I first see the clothes I walk away ❤❤❤❤
Merry Christmas Anna! A perfectly timed video as we're staring down 2023! I'm excited about the new year and making wise clothes shopping decisions. This was helpful! I find it best to NOT be impulsive, check the stores' return policy and don't cut the tags off right away just in case you change your mind. Happy New Year!!
Thanks! My style has been helped by the counterintuitive piece of advice that a v neck is better for large chests. I'm not trying to minimize nor maximize my chest, just trying to wear clothes that fit my body shape (between hour glass and upside down triangle).
Cute you taking the time out during the season to cover the lessons for pulling together looks for 2023. Thought you would be providing countdowns of your favorite looks for 2022. Love hearing young one in the background giving cheer for Christmas time. Thanks for sharing and blessings to you and all in the days to come. Hope you are enjoying the holidays and are looking forward to the coming of the new year.

Hi Anna I love love love your video. I was wondering where you bought the black pointy toe flat shoes I did not see it in your links. Thank you so much keep up the good work and keep us all looking nice. Peggy
Please please: where'd you get that beyond gorgeous big green sweater. I love green and have seen that before. I really would love to wear it ALL the time.
Do not be afraid to walk out of a store empty handed. Just means that you did not find that item which wowed you. Not all items are meant for everyone. Save your money for the next time.

I’m in my 50s. I wish we could be neighbours and discuss fashion, lol. No one I know cares about fashion or clothing or finds it interesting.

Thank you, Judy! Merry Christmas! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for this very informative video. I missed your funny remarks! But I totally agree with you on everything you mentioned. I loved that you didn’t tell us to throw everything out. C’mon that is NOT where to start. FIRST Make a board or several - to figure out
what you like and looks good. Then tackle the closet. Making a list is a great idea. LOVE your videos
Merry Christmas, Anna! Thank you for your amazing channel and all the content - so happy to have discovered you this year! ❤🎉
Merry Christmas to you too! 🎄 So happy you’re here! ❤️❤️
That is a great habit to be in! ❤️❤️❤️
Clothes are so personal, when you said emotional clutter the light bulb went off. Thankyou ❤😊
Merry Christmas to you all
Merry Christmas! ❤️🎄❤️
Love your videos Anna. I've been trying to get a clear sense of my own style for past year or so (wish I'd started sooner) but I'm realising that we're never actually done. We keep evolving!
That is such a true statement! Which is why I always think we should find some fun with fashion because it's always a process! 😃
Girl I love a button down. So true! I had no idea I loved them until I found the right one!
Your illustrations always crack me up. I love your videos and your sense of humour.
LOL Glad you like it! 🤣❤️
What a great video. You made so many wonderful points and suggestions. I’ve been watching fashion videos for a while now but I really connected with your message in this one. Thanks. Happy Holidays! 🎉
Glad you liked this, Barbara! Happy Holidays! ❤️
I appreciate your advice! I would also like to advice that rounded jewelry, like the chain you wear, match with rounder lines on the shirt, while v neck would match better with pendants that follow this triangular V-neck line.
I think it adds a lot wearing a belt when the slacks/jeans have belt loops and the waist area shows.
Great tips! Happy Holidays 🎄🎁🌲
Happy Holidays! 🎄❤️🎄
Who sells quality clothing anymore? I’d love some suggestions because all I see around me are fast fashion stores. I’m constantly repurchasing every season because the clothes don’t last. It’s so wasteful. I’d love a video on quality clothing retailers.
Depends on what you’re looking for! I would look at reviews a lot. Much of the time you can tell if something is made well or not just be the reviews
Banana Republic?
quality over quantity and only one opinion matters. pure platinum...not just gold. platinum, girl.
Lol glad you liked that! ❤️❤️❤️
VERY GOOD ADVISES ONE, THANK YOU AND HAVE A HAPPY NEW YEAR
So helpful! I just watched this twice!
Merry Christmas! Enjoy your family time together! XXOO ❤️
Merry Christmas, Pat! ❤️
You have a great personality!
I appreciate the down to earth thinking about style. Thank you. 😊
Happy Christmas for you and your family...thanks for a lovely and fun year...oh doggy too still smiling at the antic.
Merry Christmas, Grace! 🎄❤️🎄
Merry Christmas Anna !

It’s easy to wear all dark colors like grey and black, but if you’re a pedestrian you must have a pop of color or a flashlight or you’re dead.
