I used to be a militant atheist when I was younger, but now I don't really care how many gods you believe in, I mostly care if you are a good person or not. Most of humanity tries to teach the best lessons and knowledge it has, regardless of religion or non-religion. I have hope for humanity because frankly it's amazing we got this far!
I'm an atheist. When you are young you think it is a good thing trying to disprove god(s). I'm not sure if I've ever seen a successful conversion however. But religion can be incredibly useful and empowering to some people. In terms of in a community or just personally. My grandparents are in their 80s and they travel around Edinburgh once a week, in a van filled with rolls and warm soup to feed those who need it. And they've done stuff like that all their life. I honestly don't know if they would be doing that without religion, or not. I'm not going to try put an end to that. However institutional religion is just so bloody dangerous. The masses of willing followers and influence that comes with it can do terrible things. Honestly, if every single 'holy place of worship' in the world acted as if they were completely separate religions and there was a 100 max person entry. That would be perfect.
Sadly the god botherers are out there working hard to restrict people's rights, in an attempt to force everyone to believe in their delusions. Freedom FROM Religion is as important as Freedom OF Religion.

I think is good to not believe in what you just don't know, since that is easy, arrogant, and can leade to horrible mistakes. If you take what you ignore as a true, sometimes the consecuences are really bad. I never believed in a god, and I know there's good people who do it. But still too much bad people justify their violence and kills based in religion believes and totally convince of being wright. And that's faith, to be convinced of something that you really don't know. And to do It voluntarily, which is even scarier. It's also why he gives that little cheer at the end; he was super relieved he got through it this time.
I agree, people instinctively tend to prefer any answer to having none. So they convince themselves it's more reasonable to pick one answer with no evidence. That can create a problem in many cases, for when someone finds a different answer based on evidence, faith can make people reject that answer even though it is rationally better.

Sam's still recovering from his burns 😅. There's sarcasm, and then there's Tim. As someone raised Christian some of his stuff used to make me a bit uncomfortable too, ,but the more you listen, ,the more you realise he's just...right 🤷♀. If you haven't watched Storm, I highly recommend that.

Tim moved back to Australia 5-6 years ago. He still tours with his band, wrote, directed and starred in the award winning TV series Upright, and helped to get the Australian production of Groundhog Day (he did music and lyrics) on its feet. He's also been on loads of podcasts. Busy man.
Tim is logical and critical of things like "miracles" and such. That is what I love about him. He uses his brain and to be honest I think it's a thing people tend to forget to use in todays world.

I was lucky enough to see the musical "Jesus Christ SuperStar" some years ago in Melbourne, and Tim played the role of Judas. Best Judas I have seen, ever. He just nailed it. We were lucky to have seats only about 10 rows from the stage, so could watch it all in person, rather than having to watch it on one of the big screens the theatre had up for people further back and upstairs. I shall spend the rest of the evening listening to his songs. Perfect night.

I think yeah, these days there's a lot more social and societal pressure to respect people's opinions, but there's a huge difference between not respecting someone and disagreeing with them. I think that the shift towards offering other people a baseline level of respect is a good thing, so long as everyone is willing to engage in discussion about their disagreements in good faith.
@@RNDReacts honestly i think the biggest evidence against such ideas of faith or energy based healing is historical record. i assure you entire cities dying of plague during the middle ages prayed really really hard in really really big groups to be healed, but despite their devout efforts the average life span was still around 35. its not until the advent of modern medicine and basic hygienic practise that life expectancy increased to the 80+ years in most the developed world today. with each stage of advance in knowledge and application showing a greater increase of average life expectancy in every population in which it was introduced. that's why medicine is an evidence based science that has produced steadily growing results. on a more personal note to your wider comments. i dont care what god concept people have but every time i see a story of a child denied cancer treatment because one parent "didnt believe in it" i am forced to ask myself where exactly that line lays and where exactly our "morality" demands we fall upon it. from my perspective belief without evidence or reason is dangerous because it so easily morphs without restraint. compassion turns to ignorance, faith turns to extremism and conviction turns to moral absolutism. no one is capable of greater evil than a man utterly convinced he is right. Tim doesn't have anything against people being religious, so the song isn't necessarily about the power of prayer or disproving religion (although you'd be forgiven for getting that idea), it was more about Sam challenging Tim's world view, and Sams evidence being "god healed my mom." Tim spends the whole song giving a dozen different reasonable explanations for how it could've happened, and his point is that any of those are far more likely than a "all powerful magician" in his words healing your mom of a common, curable problem.

It’s why I don’t like combative language to be used for illnesses, like cancer, because it gives the impression of people having a larger amount of control over a situation than they actually have. It also lets people think they are able to help in situations they have little or no ability to affect in any way.
I read something and it really resonated with me. If God exists they cannot be all powerful, all knowing and all good. At best, they can be two out of the three. If they are all powerful and all knowing, they cannot be all good, because of all the bad stuff which would be in their power to prevent, yet isn’t. If they are all good and all powerful, they cannot be all knowing, or even know a small amount really. You get my meaning?

Sometimes highly intelligent, analytical people never experience or get to know God. I’m not intelligent, but I am very analytical & did not believe in god most of my life. In fact I use to mock people who did, by saying they were weak & needed a crutch/ fantasy to help them cope. Then things change. I had no concept of god, until I did. No one could have explained it well enough for me. I had to have the experiences I did, for me to have that understanding.

That's funny that y'all actually think there was an actual Sam and his mom. It is truly rare for comedians to tell a story that actually happened. I'm not suggesting that it never happens, but its rare. But I can pretty much guarantee that Tim is using the story of these made up characters, to make a point. Because we do know there are those who are like Sam out there, and they have stories just like that one.
not at an individual level i've seen things that make be believe that there could be an intelligent design of our existence... but from everything else i've experienced i don't believe in these organized religions. my perspective is that you ought to do your best to be a good person in eyes of your living and past loved ones, friends, and peers. it's far more complicated than that but it's a good starting point imo.

Saw him a little over a month ago at a small gig at the Gold Coast. He said he only wants to do smaller gigs these days. Fantastic show.

I saw him in concert a few days ago in Perth his (and my) home town - he is a very entertaining, funny, intelligent and talented person. Tim doesn't have anything against people being religious, so the song isn't necessarily about the power of prayer or disproving religion (although you'd be forgiven for getting that idea), it was more about Sam challenging Tim's world view, and Sams evidence being "god healed my mom." Tim spends the whole song giving a dozen different reasonable explanations for how it could've happened, and his point is that any of those are far more likely than a "all powerful magician" in his words healing your mom of a common, curable problem.

I read something and it really resonated with me. If God exists they cannot be all powerful, all knowing and all good. At best, they can be two out of the three. If they are all powerful and all knowing, they cannot be all good, because of all the bad stuff which would be in their power to prevent, yet isn’t. If they are all good and all powerful, they cannot be all knowing, or even know a small amount really. You get my meaning?

I’m not intelligent, but I am very analytical & did not believe in god most of my life. In fact I use to mock people who did, by saying they were weak & needed a crutch/ fantasy to help them cope. Then things change. I had no concept of god, until I did. No one could have explained it well enough for me. I had to have the experiences I did, for me to have that understanding.

not at an individual level i've seen things that make be believe that there could be an intelligent design of our existence... but from everything else i've experienced i don't believe in these organized religions. my perspective is that you ought to do your best to be a good person in eyes of your living and past loved ones, friends, and peers. it's far more complicated than that but it's a good starting point imo.
